This is a great tactical breakdown if you’re into the fine points:
Reading up on Jesse’s style…
Without oversimplifying, Marsch’s tactics are built around a fast vertical attack, with players in close proximity to set-up a ferocious counter-press if they lose the ball. They won’t go man-for-man, but the intensity off the ball and attacking intent of Bielsa’s side in possession will remain.”
“Marsch plays that press, counter-press, work rate, attacking football. He won’t dig in and try to nick a point because he’s not capable of it. It’s not what he does. “Unless he has a total change from what he does, I don’t think he’ll focus on defence. I think he’ll find a way to have a more effective press.
Marsch favours a 4-2-2-2 formation, otherwise known as the ‘box’ midfield, designed to move the ball forwards, in a straight line, as fast as possible.
It’s a subtle change in the press, moving away from man-marking to something which actually stops the opposition at source, which Marsch will use to prevent goals against his team.
I’m with ya so far.
Well, looks like it's happening:
Jesse Marsch has yet to sign any contract with the USMNT, so the move is not a done deal. But he is reportedly on the verge of joining the Stars and Stripes in place of Anthony Hudson after Nations League matches in June.
Trade! KC moves up to 55 and picks a WR from SMU.
Had a big year in college.
@Jethro said in Arterio Morris is a Jayhawk:
I've had a day to digest this, as I fully expected this to happen. And what I came up with is we don't have the facts. We think we do, but we don't. I'm going to wait until I hear from Bill. The kid hasn't even had a day in court. I don't think Bill has lost his mind. So, let's hear him out. Maybe there's more to the story we don't know.
Yup, you're right. who knows what really happened. We've had that kinda start to a domestic violence conversation before at KU with the stair dragging "incident" that turned out to be BS (as far as i can remember!).
I don't wanna think about it any more, so i'll shut up now.
Hope he fits in, does the right thing on and off the court.
Possibly two freshmen starting?
PG Dajuan Harris
SG Arterio Morris or Elmarko
SF Nick Timberlake
F Marcus Adams
C Udeh
Sixth men: Morris or Elmarko / KJ (just don't want him and Udeh in at the same time. maybe i'm wrong)
This move reeks of desperation unless Bill knows something we don't.
I guess the girl could have made it all up, but there was a lot of stuff to make up.
Oh well. hope it all works out.
don't get your hopes up. doesn't sound like we're at the front of the line?
I dunno much about the sheep lover DE, but he’s a KC product. it seemed like the draft didn’t fall KC’s way.

Ties to a former assistant coach now at Cal.
Yup, it's smoke screen season for NFL GMs. all sorts of crazy rumors out there.
Even one that the Chiefs move up for a running back. that would be odd.

@Kcmatt7 said in Thoughts on Arterio Morris:
I said it before, but unless KU was seriously interested in Morris they wouldn't have ever had him on campus. You don't let that PR nightmare on campus unless you basically want and need him.
I expect him to announce he's a Jayhawk on Friday.
Ugh, where’s the dislike button.
This makes us look desperate. Not a good place to be.

I got a new one for you: Juan/ El Marko / Timberlake / Adams / KJ.

I was just down in SoCal visiting my mom, drove by his high school around the corner! I'm rooting for him to have some freshman success for sure.

Not thrilled about Primo. He gets a layup on one of his highlights where the whole team is on the other end of the court, they steal the ball, throw it down court to Primo for the easy layup. Never made it back on defense. I'd rather have El Marko, Chris, McDowell, really anyone than Primo. I'll bet he wouldn't get 5 minutes a game in conference.
Bad take. Chris is...not good. There are even concerns in his camp that he isn't KU material now.
So this is interesting. How can we get to the point where Chris Johnson was offered a scholarship and is on the roster? Surely Self and Co. have scouted him and see potential, right?
Looks like we're making progress in the front office. Reports saying we've hired a sporting director. Next up, a coach! Calling Jesse Marsch, calling Jesse Marsch...
I say that mockingly because the new guy was looking at hiring him! ha.
Southampton director of football operations Matt Crocker is set to be tabbed as the next sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation, sources told ESPN.
Top of the thread edited for clarity ... as i was half asleep when i started it. zzz.

The wing spot is a bit of a mystery with our freshmen, plus the Timberlake addition.
He could start, but with what I’m reading he would ideally be a sixth man?
Were not including Timberlake in this remember? - he is transfer portal
Sure, no prob. Include Timberlake.
I just didn't want another transfer speculation thread, that's all. Was hoping to discuss our current starters, and see how that changes over the next month as we add players to the team.
No worries, these threads evolve. I get it!
@DCHawker said in Off-season starting lineup ever changing thread:
If that is what we end up with post portal, then it is going to be a long season. Even with Self coaching, I don't think that is close to a 20 win team. As you note, no outside shooting. Even worse, that's 3 small guards and a 4 that doesn't rebound. Udeh's not great either. Rolling the dice going all in on Ingram and Dickinson. Whiffed on the first and may on the second, as well. Going to have to find some size and athleticism from someone who doesn't stay in the draft.
Yup, that lineup is brutal for shooting. To think I was worried about shooting last season! This is worse.

Let’s keep this a non transfer/portal thread if you don’t mind. We got enough of that talk elsewhere, right? :)
Current roster guys…
With sooo many moving parts, I thought it would be entertaining to predict potential starting lineups — with ONLY guys on the current roster. No cheating and inserting Hunter until if and when he signs on the dotted line! :)
Mine:
PG: Dajuan Harris
SG/CG: Elmarko Jackson
SG/CG: Chris Johnson or whichever freshman stands out
Wing-ish: KJ Adams
Center: Ernest Udeh
Analysis: there is basically zero 3 pt shooting skill in this mix of players. That’s an issue. From what I’m reading about Elmarko, he’s going to have a big learning curve playing without being ball dominant. There are some downhill players in the mix though. That’s good. And I don’t love that mix of KJ and Udeh. I’d prefer a four out rotation.
Waddya not like about Memphis? Ja and his entourage?
I don’t follow the league enough to know.
Watched a little. Like you I was totally looking forward to watching Cade Cowell. He was invisible. Weird. Thought he’d be the focal point.
Was out of town and didn’t get to watch. How did we do? Play all youngsters?
Hmmm, the Chiefs do need a little bit of everything.
Not sure their O line is settled. Do they somehow move up to grab a true LT?
I'd grab a more dynamic RB somewhere in the draft. Pacheco starts, but CEH seems to be in the dog house with his plodding, straight ahead style. Sometimes works.
WR is still an issue. And Kelce is near the end of his career (33 years old). If he goes down (god forbid) we got problems.
Nothing wrong with Gabbert as a backup. Good signing.
Glad they already have their QBs set before training camp.
LA Times story from a while back on Adams Jr.
Braun stirring up some sh*t tonight. Awesome to see. He’s a spark plug for that team.
I can see him getting some snaps at WR of course, but he's nothing special.
I watched him as a 49er quite a bit, when he caught a pass.
No breakaway speed, not fast, not truly explosive after the catch.
Maybe he's improved since his 49er days? hope so.
Just meh so far.
Guessing he’ll mostly be a help on special teams. Return guy.

I didn't want to! He sounds like a good kid and I wish him the best but it did not work out here.
You’re a class act, Sharky!

I saw that Adams has to go under the knife with a hamstring injury. Poor Leeds. The three Americans may be looking for new jobs soon enough. Ugh.

@rockchalkjayhawk I should have clarified. I didn't "visit" said hooker... just happened to be the first thing we saw entering the city. Lol. I was 14 years old. So it's been a minute
The first (And only) time I went to DC was in the mid 80s. I just remember a lot of it being a pit, with homeless everywhere. I had never seen it that bad before — and I grew up near NYC. So, I’m not surprised at all at your hooker spotting!
@cragarhawk well what kinda deal did ya get? Did you get a discount by mentioning the KUBuckets coupon? 🤔
If Gradey stayed one more at KU, he would be (IMO) an instant NBA success.
He's got a lot to work on. I hope his shot is enough to keep him rostered for now.
There's still time to change your mind, Gradey!
Bummer for us, hopefully good for him.
Dang, shooting is gonna be rough next year (so far)!
Sigh. true.
I am bummed about the Rice departure. The rest, no prob.
I’m guessing he thought he was an instant star, but in reality when on the floor it looked like he needed a few years to realize that potential.
Soft, coddled weenies!!! You must be like butter, cuz you’re on a roll! So funny! :)
And I like De La Torre. I’m not sure he’s the regular starter, but a good back up at the very least. But he’s had flashes of both good and bad.
I haven’t read much on the Berhalter scandal since the dumbass Reyna stuff filled the air with a nasty stench. I’ll never look at that kid the same again, sadly.
Per Pepi and any other forward we play…Maybe that guy we are chasing with ties to England will help. Still all about the same otherwise to me.
Ha, I just realized the other day that the men are playing Nations league games!
Pretty ugly first half vs El Salvador. Their formation baffled us for awhile. Second half was much better.
Couple thoughts:
— Pulisic simply sucks at corner kicks. Can’t even hit a head. Constantly kicks it clear of any players. BTW he was awful tonight in the run of play.
— I didn’t know squat about this Zendejas guy. He’s capped now. Looks skilled and entertaining. Shocked he’s 25! Thought he’d be younger.
— Miles Robinson looked great.
— I’ve been wondering for awhile who our best player is. Sounds crazy, but I think Antonee Robinson consistently plays his position the best. Who would you argue for? Adams? McKennie?
— I still don’t know what to make of limited Reyna viewing. What position does he play? Hard to tell on the field. At one point he was collecting balls from the back line, the next he was on the wing. He’s awkwardly gangly and slow for a wing. Is he a mid?
Anyway, happy to watch the lads play again. And What’s his name finally scored!!! Ha.
Pretty sweet dunk over the McDonalds dude!
I think they have a long ways to go on the D line, inside especially.
