Gradey Dick led all KU players at the FT line hitting 3/5. As a team, KU FT shooting was 8/20. How in the hell does a team of D1 athletes shoot less than 50%? Doesn't McCarthy have an indoor basketball court for unlimited practice? There's no excuse for such poor FT shooting. It seems like our coaching staff just tolerates it.
Hey, Cuffe at least hit the backboard!
Barely hit the backboard. I'll give him a pass due to nerves.
Poor guy. U could see he was nervous.
Iām hoping to see more of Cuffe early in the season. We donāt know much about his skills. Seemed quick enough on the floor.

@stoptheflop Zach is a good player but a horrendous fit for what Bill wants. Could see multiple times Bill was FURIOUS with him. Going to be very interesting...
Which makes you wonder why Bill even recruited him, right?
Why not use him for what he is, instead of trying to jam him into a mold heās not???
@Kcmatt7 Oddly Zach was the ONLY big who posted up and scored last night. And there was evidence last season he could post up and score as well. So, he seems like the perfect modern big to me. Assuming he proves he can shoot of course, which he hasnāt yet in a game. He even proved heās mobile. He took it to the rack from the foul line and scored!
I say Zach will prove very valuable over time.
As for us morphing into the Golden State Warriorsā¦canāt do that without 4.5 shooters on the floor. We aināt got the ponies for that. Best we can hope is that Self makes these guys dribble drive like Dotson did. I think the odds of us turning into a good driving team are higher than us turning into a good shooting team, outside of Gradey of course.
Just keep those bigs rotating ā¦
Whoooaaa doggie!
Gradeyās got a smoooottth stroke! Wow.
It was our first game, and an exhibition, so not sure how much we can read into things.
I do have the same concern Iāve had since the summerā¦3 pt shooting. Gonna need some more. Once teams scout Grady and shove him off the line as best they can, somebody will have to step up.
That paired with zero post game could be a basic basketball problem against big boy teams.
Waaaayy better second half.
How do you think our young bigs did? First glance not sure I can tell much about their games yet. Udeh had some dunks! For some reason I had it in my head that Zuby would be the better of the two.
Cuffe played!!! How bout that? I was excited to see him and the new bigs.
Iām afraid Self is asking things of Joe that he simply isnāt comfortable with ā get downhill to the hoop.
Two bigs. Man, hitting the way back machine if so.
Signing off so i can watch after work tonight without spoilers! (danged 5 p.m. starts for us west coasters)
Wait, did i see above that Udeh is staring with KJ? Or was that silliness?
wow!

Sure, so Self/T took suspensions while Louisville gets off free. What a complete joke. If this isn't the end to KU's penalties, I'll have no words.
The mystery continues!
I dunno if this matters when it comes to penalties, but Louisville was accused of only one Level 1 charge, where KU has five against them, right? maybe that was the difference?
@mayjay said in Self & Townsend Suspended 4 games (First 4):
@rockchalkjayhawk I think it isn't lying so much as cover. Two things could simultaneously be true and if he is authorized to speak only about one, it is not lying to do so.
I hear ya @mayjay
I know. I mentioned in my post that he was likely unable to discuss. I get it. Liar probably too strong a word. my anger and disappointment about all this earlier today got the best of me i'm sure. But still seems like a clown show at times with all this veiled secrecy. can't stand it.
@Jethro said in Self & Townsend Suspended 4 games (First 4):
I have a couple thoughts on this:
I appreciate the visit from the cave troll on this thread today. If your take is "Bill is a liar" then all I can say is we live rent free inside your head. National champs, baby!
The pure delight of watching heads explode on Rump Rafters is simply priceless. Oh, it just crushed them.
If you're calling me the cave troll @Jethro , OK. Not making up anything here, Bill seems to be running loose with the truth in some of his previous statements about recruiting, etc. Not comfortable with that at all. Don't like it. Nor do i like how secretive this entire process has been.
So, happily KU already lives rent free in my head. Proud to be a grad, but embarrassed about all this mess and how we're handling it.
Well, this absolutely sucks and is great at the same time.
Finally making progress with the NCAA? Great.
Penalty! Sucks.
More to come? Very possibly.
Why more to come? Reading between the lines (now nearly confirmed as lies) from Self regarding lack of Late Night visitors. The last quote from this story on Late Night is very much a concern:
But there were no undecided five-star big name players like in the past. And Kansas coach Bill Self said after the event that that was by design.
āThe reason why we didnāt have (official visitors) here is because weāve just basically got our guys committed,ā Self said Friday. āWe made a conscious effort this year to bring in the ones that we really wanted early and not wait for this because thereās no guarantee theyāll last.ā
I think thatās something weāll probably do moving forward,ā he said. āEven though Late Nightās great, Late Night may be a better deal for young kids than it is for veterans. If we move the date back like this, weāll have unofficials in and no officials.ā
Hmmm. Hate to be suspicious again, but sounds like the recruiting penalties will continue for awhile.
And Iām unsure how to feel about Selfās words. I want to be pissed at him for what appears to be blatant lying, but Iām sure he couldnāt speak of any penalties at that point. Uncomfortable.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in Late Night:
OK, i admit i'm a bit suspicious by nature, but this has me really wondering if there's something going on behind the scenes.

Paul Pogba was just ruled out of the WC for France. Can't come back from knee surgery in time. One of the veterans of the Belgium team, Lukaku, is also questionable after injuring his hamstring.
You've got to figure that the compressed schedules caused by moving the tournament to late fall are mostly to blame for the rash of injuries. Teams have to play twice a week (plus Champions & Europa League matches) just to fit all the games in. Even younger stars like Pogba are having trouble staying healthy. At least MLS-based players have a slight advantage in that area, since their regular season only had to be shifted by a few weeks.
yup, the entire Qatar WC is a joke. $$$$$$$$ rules the world. bribery and $. a winter World Cup? just ridiculous.

I watched that Pulisic point-blank miss off the rebound. Ouch.
This is turning into a real mess for the USMNT. Other than Reyna (who's still on the comeback trail and only played as a sub this weekend), I don't know how many quality healthy bodies we'll even have for the World Cup. The ones we do have are proving to be mostly ineffective in league play...when they get minutes, that is.
McKennie's got a bad quad. De La Torre is out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury. Turner? Groin. Our other goalie, Steffen, is still recovering from a knee knock. Then there's Weah, Robinson and Musah.
This isn't a national team, it's a MASH unit.
Not sure how healthy he is, but at least Adams got minutes in that Leeds "upset" at Liverpool. (I almost hesitate to call it an upset, since the Reds seem to be making a habit out of losing to last-place teams this season.)
Wish it weren't so, but it's not looking good for the USA's "golden generation." At the very least, all this attrition is killing our depth as we get closer and closer to November 21st.
Man, Iāve been reading about the health of our players, or lack of.
Just getting worse and worse for our World Cup hopes. Crap.

@jayballer67 said in Big news for the big 12 - -has to be good:
Well the Big 12 just became more stabilized - -Not Big 10 or SEC Stable but makes us for sure the third best stability for future reference.
The big 12 and ESPN & FOX came to agreement on new media rights/deal.
The new deal calls for a 2.28 Billion over 6 year contract , which in turn they said figures out to be 380 Million a year and averages to right about 32 Million pe School. While now the Big 12 is finishing out it's final years of 220 Million Average
Now while this isn't like we had with Oklahoma & Texas the report said was when you add in the NCAA playin off & NCAA revenue - -it will avgerage out to right at 50 Million per School despite losing Oklahoma & Texas. - -where it was 42 Million per School. - -Not bad at all.
What this does isSecures the future of the Big 12 , don't end up blowin up. It future probably adds also that if like more chances then not that if the Big 10 does in fact in up taking Oregon & Washington to the BIG - that pretty much destroys the PAC 12 like has been talked about , and in turn you gonna see other PAC Schools bailing - -most common for the Big 12 adding Arizona - -Arizona State - - Colorado - - & Utah - -most likely these 4 but for sure you would see Arizona & Arizona state making the Big 12 the 3rd mega Conference. - -I for one feel good about this. - -Although with the BIG adding those two Schools makes it even a less chance KU goes BIG. - I really didn't think we were going there anyway just they don't think we bring enough to the Conference. - -So we make the best of the situation and survive - -were gonna be all right
It's too bad we couldn't swoop in, and take Oregon, Washington, and the two Arizonas.
The writer that @jayballer67 mentions, Wilner, reports that nothing appears imminent with Oregon and Washington for now. Also has said before them to the Big 12 seems unlikely. But who knows. Mayhem!
Sounds about right.
Grady, too?
OK, i have to say i'm not a huge college football guy. Don't watch much. So, don't mock me too much for just figuring this out...
Tank for Brock Bowers!
This guy looks like the next Travis Kelce!
Holy shit turds. Chelsea got boat raced today by Brighton.
They looked like absolute slugs. Defense? Ha!
Pulisic, until i stopped watching mid second half, was no help whatsoever.
In fact he missed what should have been a semi easy goal early on. his defensive effort was lethargic, like the rest of em.
Silva continues to look like he's lost 10 steps of quickness. He made multiple mistakes today, then miraculously headed away his mistakes on the goal line.
Haven't seen much of Christian lately, but he's not helping himself with performances like today's.

I'd go for another DE/DT for stretch run. I think we are well placed on DBs and LBs. Clark is out for next two games.

And/or healthy offensive lines! :)
@drgnslayr said in The 4-Out Rotation:
I understand what you are saying... but there is no better contribution at PG than being part of a national championship.
We all like to see guys capable of scoring... it just isn't always the best contribution they can make, especially at PG.
I know I'm down for another championship year where Juan only scores a little but we double up our titles.
None of our other 4 players should feel like they can go on cruise control because Juan is now a threat. They all should feel like his points are totally bonus points.
Juan definitely needs to think team offense first, before he gets his points... though... when there is a clear out on the side he likes to drive and he's facing someone he feels he can take... he should take it! When he gets that wide open trey shot he needs to put it up for a heat check. If he's hot... keep shooting it. If he feels it, keep shooting it.
We don't want to pressure him for points. That would be a disaster. He has to keep his focus first on team.
Sure, all well said @drgnslayr
I'm down with Dajuan. He fits in well with the team. We may be scoring deprived early on this year, so we'll need some production from somewhere, incuding DH.
So, no bashing yet. Onward and upward.
Ugh. We need all our stars to be healthy, and quickly!
The semi positive is that i think we have at least three goalies who are semi interchangeable. Not too worried if Turner goes down. But hope he doesn't.
Adams would be a bummer to replace. Need him.
Reyna: who knows. As others have said in the Chiefs thread, he's a wildcard to me.
@benshawks08 said in The 4-Out Rotation:
@drgnslayr Some people might STILL argue it was a mistake to give Dajuan minutes even though we won the whole thing. Those people will be back this year claiming MJ should be getting more minutes over Dajuan. He doesn't make the obviously outstanding plays so he will always be underappreciated.
We as KU fans are pretty much used to PGs or lead guards that can offer more than what Dajuan offers. Better shooting, scoring, fancy passes, better size, strength, etc. So, it is what it is. I was one of those guys lined up last year to give more minutes to other guys for sure. I'll likely be the same guy this year :(
If we have the ponies around him that can provide things he cannot while he's on the floor, great. If not, maybe fewer minutes for Dajuan, and more or some minutes at least to guys with a more well rounded game.
Wow, heard that on the radio while driving home a few minutes ago.
I can honestly say I donāt know squat about this guy. No clue if heās big, small, fast or bruising.
One reaction I heard was from a Raiders fan. And you know they hate their Chiefsā¦He thought it was a brilliant signing for KC. Heās a Raiders fan, so of course he didnāt have the vocabulary skills to say ābrilliantā, but I interpreted his grunts as unhappy the Chiefs signed him.
We needed help at other spots Iād say.
I wouldn't mind a healthy CB.
BTW, just gotta say this about the Frank Clark suspension...
Every time i read it i'm still surprised that dude had an uzi in his car sticking out from an open bag.
C'mon, man! :)
Well, Robert Quinn isn't coming to KC. Bummer.
Quinn to Eagles
The Bears will pick up a fourth-round pick for Quinn, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. This mid-round choice will change sides because of the Bearsā willingness to pick up much of Quinnās $12.8MM salary. Chicago will be on the hook for most of Quinnās remaining money (less than $9MM), Garafolo adds (on Twitter).

I get that is your opinion and the same opinion of many on here. I don't deny that I'm in the minority here. But did the man who matters most, HCBS, state that he is a Day 1 starter somewhere?
Yes, he kind of said he'd be in the starting 5.
Self said Wednesday that the three players who attended media day with him ā Harris, McCullar and Wilson ā were all slated to start, āunless something happens,ā and added that freshman guard Gradey Dick was likely headed toward being named a starter, as well.
Pulisic amazingly got a start today in UCL!

UNC had a traditional big (Bacot) and made it to the Finals. Flo Thamba was a traditional big on the Baylor team that won it 2 years ago. Doke in 19-20 was on the best team in America. Virginia's big Diakite on their title squad was more of the mobile type.
At least recently, its proven to be effective to have that traditional big in the lane.
Well, sure kinda sorta maybe on Flo? Dude averaged a career best 6 pts a game his last year. So not really counting him as a go to guy to get a basket down low.
So we got Bascot and KUās offerings. The cupboard isnāt exactly bursting at the seams is my point.
Iām by no means arguing against the idea of a big who can get a bucket, just saying they donāt exist as much in todayā game any more.

ouch. tough life being an EPL coach!
Interesting tidbit from the story...Leeds may be weaker this season than the ended last year. Lost some guys to transfer, and didn't spend to bring better guys in. Sucks.
It is a similar story at Leeds, where Marsch lost midfielder Kalvin Phillips (to Manchester City) and forward Raphinha (Barcelona) for fees totalling almost £100m, while club-record signing Daniel James also left on loan to Fulham. The Elland Road recruitment team replaced them with a variety of players with little or no Premier League experience, such as Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams and Rasmus Kristensen. Having avoided relegation only on the final day of last season, Leeds arguably went into this season with a weaker squad after allowing three key players to leave in the summer, so it is no surprise that Marsch's team would be struggling and now in the bottom three.
I watched a few minutes of the Leeds game. Noticed that Adams wasnāt in the lineup to start.
Bummer they lost. Really rooting for them this season with their American contingent.
Actually maybe my new āgo toā team to watch in this year.
Before the season my impression of Aaronsen was that heās pretty much a spaz. Just runs around like a mad man and gets involved all over the field. But, didnāt think he had much skill.
After watching a few Leeds games so far, my impression is slightly changed. Still puts in massive effort with his mobility. But Iāve seen a few instances of skill and vision that are inspiring.
This is an interesting conversation. Kind of an old school conversation in a way though, right?
The model in basketball lately has been mobile bigs who can handle and shoot, not necessarily post up and dominate inside like Shaq back in the day.
Looking at the last half decade or so of national champions, Kansas last year was really the only team with a traditional big with size with Big Dave. you have to go way back to 2015 Duke to find a traditional big over 6-9. Villanova? Virginia?
So, I dunno if this is even a conversation.
I see Pacheco is getting the start!
A bit of a surprise to me that they send him out vs one of the toughest D lines in the league.
Hope it pays off.

Close.
Just catching up to real time nowā¦

No blitz when dude is running around in his end zone and a lame, useless zone that allows them to get a first down? Why?
Donāt get that at all.
Iāll double up on a thought I had in another threadā¦
We have 25 fouls to give. Letās use em. Be aggressive. Put some shoulders into their bigs. Bump, battle and bruise.
In foul trouble? Next guy up. Tired? Next guy up.
Will Self do that? Maybe early on, but certainly not by mid conference year.
IMO: Zach and KJ will play a lot.
I canāt really offer an opinion on the new guys yet. I sure hope one of em can contribute ā rebound and have a presence inside.
