New Guys Arriving • Jun 13, 2022 12:46 AM

I’ll believe it when I see it with Rice. He’s been more just able to physically dominate HS competition so far. He’s not a great shooter either. Poor man’s Wayne Selden right now IMO

it's summer, we can dream...

I watched a few highlight videos on the YouTubes earlier. I didn't see a great shooter, but his form didn't look broken at all.

I think the physical domination of defenders will continue once he gets used to the speed of the game.

I don't think it'll happen, but I'd like to see Berhalter play either Weah or Reyna up top in one of these lead up games. So much depth with Aaronsen, Musah, McKennie, Pulisic, Weah, Adams, Reyna, De la Torre...to then put someone up top at the 9 that is far less talented seems like a bummer to me.

Hard to argue...

New Guys Arriving • Jun 12, 2022 08:06 PM

@Jethro hmm, you got me studying up on MJ. I think I’ve undervalued him. He seems very humble and eager to up his game through hard work. Like that a lot. SOLIDLY built! McCullar maybe stole his starting spot by transferring in. Or maybe that makes Dick the sixth man or so.

USMNT • Jun 11, 2022 06:22 AM

Second half was way better than the frustrating first!

Grreeeaaat play by the midfielders — making 40 yard runs right up the gut.

Ferreira finally broke through. Let’s hope that makes him more comfortable scoring moving forward.

@approxinfinity said in USMNT:

Yeah the midfield is not nearly as settled as I expected at this point. Adams is not impressing me at all right now, and moving Aaronsen to the midfield again seems like a disruption to a rotation that should have been settling. I was hoping Acosta would be in that rotation.

I'm not opposed to Aaronsen taking a central role. He is doing so for club, it just seems to be the 11th hour.

Aaronsen. Hmmm. He’s an energy guy. Nonstop, which is great. I don’t get to see him play club, but he seems like the perfect pick up the team late sub.

I think the midfield is set: Adams/McKennie/Musah

Assuming we start in a 4-3-3...

Happy to see arreola acosta and de la torre starting. Morris, meh. I think antonee robinson is overrated. Zimmerman is serviceable. Has mckinney been hitting the roids? Looks thick.

I was thinking the same thing about Weston! He looked huge tonight. Maybe he’s bulking up to impress Pulisic’s sister :)

I’m fine with A Robinson. He seems like our best option. I didn’t think much of him a year ago, but he’s grown on me.

USMNT • Jun 11, 2022 06:04 AM

@approxinfinity said in USMNT:

I want to see as much de la Torre as possible. The kid I think has greatness in him. If we aren't building him into a rotation piece for this WC I think it will be a mistake in hindsight.

Totally agree. He seems so in control of his game.

USMNT • Jun 10, 2022 11:59 PM

More thoughts on the Uruguay game...

Seems like Berhalter's plan to press up high after turnovers, but not everybody was buying into it. Kinda half assed in a way, because they found ways out and we were stuck with only a few back to defend the counter -- with chaos at times in the box. unmarked guys, poor decisions.

Anyway, if that's the plan, fine. Just be more organized.

Standouts good or bad:

-- Joe Scally: wow. he's got some growing to do. His decision making was horrendous, with even worse execution. Hope with more playing time he can make those decisions confidently, with force behind em.

-- Forwards: meh, as usual.

-- Keeper: nicely played.

Adams: all over the place as usual. caught up field a few times.

Musah: Efffffff yes!!!!!!!!! Love his style of play. just to it more often

USMNT • Jun 10, 2022 11:53 PM

Thought i'd revisit this topic since we're in the midst of some USMNT games. what, four to go before the World Cup?

Watched the Uruguay game. tough match, but i was generally pleased with our play.

The general consensus seems to be we need to figure out who will play centrally with Zimmerman on defense.

And the usual issue: center forward

They honestly are all the same to me: Ferreira, Pepi, Sargent if you can qualify him as a striker.

Maybe this long lost Haji Wright will have an impact.

Fingers crossed tonight in Texas.

Team 1:

Harris
Rice
McCullar
Wilson
Clemence

The bench will be very deep for sure. Somebody (s) will not be pleased about playing time!

I think Self will run out countless lineups before he finds the right mix. That may take til Mid January.

IMO that Team 1 lineup is just asking for opponents to clog the lane.

Shannon and McCullar both transfer out. Awkward...

Two of their best players.. You don't see that at KU, Kentuckah, Puke, UNC etc

Makes me think the atmosphere down there isn't very pleasant. Those guys were the heart and soul of their team.

It’s Lubbock. How pleasant can it be?

Gradey Dick Call Your Shot • Jun 07, 2022 04:24 PM

Dang, with so many unknowns about this roster, this is a very tough call.

I’ll prognosticate he’s gotta have a big role on offense, with him presumably already our best 3 pt shooter. Green light special. But, he’s a freshman.

I’m going with 9 ppg, 2.7 rbg, 1.5 apg.

@BShark said in Reasons to believe in next year’s team:

I think Gradey is rather overrated. Would love to be wrong...

I’m guessing one area he’s not overrated is his shooting form. That looks pretty solid. It’s always tough for scrubs like me to judge an incoming player, having only seen him play a few times. He never stood out in those few games though.

But, somebody has to shoot and score next year. His light is gonna be Green to launch 3s.

He for sure doesn’t have a college ready body. That will hold him back on anything physical.

I’ll call my shot in the other thread...

One trait I really like about Zach so far: he plays with energy.

Start there and the technical skills will come along.

Roster’s set ... who starts? • Jun 03, 2022 04:18 PM

@BeddieKU23 said in Roster’s set ... who starts?:

I'll go..

Harris, Pettiford, McCullar, Wilson, Clemence to start the season.

This is where I think Self maybe leaning.

Personally I'd throw Gradey in the starting lineup for size, playmaking, perimeter shooting.

I think one of the duo of Dick/Rice can make their way in the starting lineup. I think Bill will be hard on those two to develop quickly.

Udeh, Adams, Yesufu to round out the rotation.

Couple thoughts:

Crazy that 2 All American freshman could come off the bench.

Crazy that a Top 50 player (Zuby) could be buried on the depth chart.

Pettiford is certainly an option to start. We really haven’t seen enough of him to know. But it does seem clear Self loves him.

I have an odd feeling in the back of my brain that MJ Rice will turn out to be Grimes — and not work out here. Hope I’m wrong.

Well that's three locks for the starting 5 for sure then: Harris / McCullar / Wilson

Famous Buckets Blunders • Jun 02, 2022 10:01 PM

Right: Remy! Knew he'd come thru in the end. patience required.

Sometimes wrong, sometimes right: Big Dave

Wrong: Mitch. I didn't think he'd contribute too much, but he came thru when called on, and was the heart and soul of the team for a decade.

Funny, I've been comparing McCullar to Garret on the 247 board since we offered.

Yea, he's been talking about how he's a bigger PG, right?

Roster’s set ... who starts? • Jun 02, 2022 09:49 PM

My starting 5 (without knowing too much about the freshmen).

Harris / McCullar / Dick / Wilson / Clemence

That leaves you with two strong defenders at the guard spot (Harris/McCullar). A shooter in Dick. Rebouding/scoring with Wilson and Clemence.

BUT, Self will want another ball handler in that group. So, guessing it's likely that Dick goes to the bench in favor of whichever small stands out.

Here’s your options...

SMALLS
Pettiford
Harris

Yesufu
Rice

MEDIUMS
McCullar
Dick

KJ Adams

BIGS
Udeh

Just saw this

June 1: Withdrawal deadline for NCAA Returners
Prospects have until the end of the day on Wednesday, June 1 to withdraw their names from the NBA Draft player pool. Any player who has not yet signed with a professional agent may do this and return to their original school or, potentially, the transfer portal. After this day, players who are not selected in the NBA Draft on June 23 will have to seek other professional options.

Wasn't a slight to Self. Actually it was a slight to Tech's coaches for being what they are.

Wasn’t thinking it was a slight. Just thought it was maybe an interesting perspective on how people perceive Self.

He's certainly among the best defensive minded coaches in the game. I also think he's equally as good on the other end which I why I didn't want to label him one or the other while I think Beard/Adams are clearly better coaching one side then the other. Self is the total package even if I'm slightly biased

Agreed on all counts!

Agree McCullar from what we've seen of him in the last 3 years isn't an ideal 3 in Self's lineup. Again I don't know how much of his offensive game was held back by two defensive minded coaches he played under (Beard, Adams) but it crosses my mind they didn't develop him this past year as much as you would have thought. I recall seeing he was injured some last year as well? Anyways I think he comes here and has a big role but I do agree I don't want him being the focal point of the offense or playing the 3 primarily. That's unless he has a leap in him we cannot project right now.

If Jalen does leave I have no idea who the offense will focus around. He'd easily be a preseason POY pick & 1st team Big-12 guy. Harris will be the highest scoring returning player & we know the offense isn't flowing through him for 10-15 shots a game. If Jalen does leave then I think Self needs to get a lot more real about roster moves. Your 12th and 13th guys aren't helping you win this upcoming year but you can go get guys in the portal that can.

Interesting you classify Beard and Adams as defensive minded coaches ... but not Self?

Today's quiz:

Who would you rather have on next year's roster...

Wilson or McCullar?

easy answer, but had to ask

I would obviously rather have Jalen back. By the end of the season he was playing so damn well. He was the real reason we could play so fast. Him and CB getting 18-20 rebounds a game and starting the break is what won them the Natty.

I think McCullar is going to be really good here. But I don't want him as my starting 3. I'm good with him playing the 4 where he is a bit of a mismatch and it allows us to switch everything. I just don't love him as my 3, which has traditionally been the go-to scorer in the Bill Self system. All of the good Bill Self teams have had a very efficient player in that role.

Rush, B-Mac, Henry (he was even if people are sour on him), Releford, Svi/Vick (were sort of interchangeable on that team), and then Och.

McCullar has just not shown he can shoot it .400 from deep or finish at the rim over .500. Nor is he the guy you are calling lob plays for which is also a Bill Self staple.

I just don't see how he fits at the 3.

Loved watching Jalen grab a rebound and just push it up the court. If there was one thing to remember about him, that was it. His specialty.

Reasons to believe in next year’s team • May 20, 2022 04:31 PM

Not only that, but the lineup above is a TERRIBLE shooting lineup. Just awful. Nothing really nice to say about it. McCullar has had enough attempts (idc whatever his catch and shoot was) to show he is at best a barely over .300 3pt shooter. Harris is a low volume guy. Bobby missed all 3 of his attempts last season, and I can't recall one hitting the rim. Jalen is adequate, but without taking a step forward he isn't a "good" shooter. Clemence is the best of them, and he'll spend half of his time in the post. It just isn't good.

Shooting? Who said shooting? :)

Well said, KCM.

This team as it currently is (I’m assuming it won’t have Wilson) will have no choice but to depend on freshmen for some scoring. Not a good recipe, but hopefully Rice can at least drive and score.

And Self, it would seem, will have no choice but to let Yesu loose.

It won’t be a pretty team to watch, that’s for sure,

Ok, let’s look at a potential starting lineup then...

Harris — defender, not a great scorer

McCullar — defender, picks up slop on offense. Not great from 3

Dick — Assuming he doesn’t play D well. gotta be a scorer, but a frosh.

Wilson — volume scorer? rebounder. Defense suspect at times

Zach — TBD. He’s gotta rebound and score

That lineup has decent 6-6ish size at the 2-4 spots. Zach has size.

Scoring, shooting a concern.
