Jalen doesn't seem to be highly ranked on draft boards. I saw one consensus board that had him #93.
So, seems like if he wants to make more than NIL money, he'd have to go overseas.
If he can gain consistency on his jump shot, and control his handle a bit more, maybe the NBA will come calling next year.
I'd love to see him come back and be Mr. Everything at KU.

KJ reminds me of Pierre Russell when he played at KU (yes, I’m that old). I don’t see KJ at the 5, but as a strong rebounding and inside scoring 4. But Self hasn’t gone that way in the past, has he?

Darnell Jackson??

This is kind of shocking. At one point, what, there was thought of at least three with a foot in the portal door???

Up to 4.

Winning cures all I guess. Though 2 were a case of people thought Bill would boot them. Very interesting.

This probably means the attrition will be through the draft.

JCL, Cam Martin, Mitch, and Remy were all listed as super seniors, so they are all gone. Big Dave and Och are also gone.

We know that MJ Rice, Gradey Dick, Zuby Ejifor, and Ernest Udeh are all coming. Ejifor and Udeh replace Dave and Mitch. Rice replaces JCL's roster spot. Dick replaces Remy's roster spot.

So there are two roster spots open at a minimum, but I'm guessing KU fills three because Braun is probably gone, too.

If we assume that means Wilson is back, our rotation next year is:

Starters: Harris, Dick, Rice, Wilson, Transfer A

Reserves: Ejifor, Udeh, Clemence, Pettiford, Yesufu, Adams, Transfer B.

I don't know where Kyle Cuffe fits into all of this. Honestly, he is the guy that I can't really figure out. He's a very bouncy athlete, but with him redshirting last year, its hard to gauge how the coaching staff feels about him. He can play. But how does he find minutes with Harris, Pettiford, Rice, Dick, Yesufu all playing guard/wing minutes. That's five guys splitting up 120 minutes already, and we know Self loves both Harris and Pettiford, so 50 of those minutes are already gone.

KU could get by without any transfers, honestly, if Wilson returns. Even without Wilson, they probably don't have to fill that other slot with a big time guy. But they probably do look for another guy either way.

Cam Martin was a red shirt, so at the moment he's not gone.

@FarmerJayhawk I've got good news about Mosley. Wonder if we have room for Mosley and McCullar or we are dead set on a small guard? Think we whiff on Hunter to the Ville.

Of all the names mentioned so far, Mosley seems like the best fit for our needs (imo).
I can't say i love the look of his jumper from 3, but if it goes in, OK!

Next Year's Team Thread • May 02, 2022 04:22 PM

So the NBA draft withdrawal date is June 1.
Are there any more portal deadlines before we can complete the roster?

I cant believe an elite defender wont end up a good defender. The two skills go hand in hand. If you are playing good d youre putting yourself in position to get the rebound. Not worried and excited hes coming back.

The guy jumps out of the gym. I’m not worried about him being a good rebounder even slightly. It’s honestly a strange critique for him. I get the offense or his tweener size takes.

But rebounding? Seems like a non-issue for a small sample size

Yeah, I don’t quite understand the bad rebounder label. He seemed to be in the mix a lot when on the floor. I recall a few times he lost the handle when pulling down a rebound, but maybe more nerves than motor skill.

More KJ!

From ChiefsWire on USAToday.com:

"The Chiefs had a big presence at the HBCU combine, the HBCU Legacy Bowl and made it a point to really dive into these prospects this year. They were able to see Williams at both the Senior Bowl and 2022 NFL Scouting Combine as well."

Ah. that explains it. thx!

Chiefs Draft • Apr 30, 2022 05:16 PM

And I have to say the first few days of the draft have been perfect for KC. Great picks.
The Greek dude and Skyy Moore just fell perfectly for them.
There will be some debate over the CB selection, whether his teammate Gordon should have gone first.

Chiefs Draft • Apr 29, 2022 04:44 AM

And how bout that, Karlaftis falls to us as predicted by many mock drafts.

I think the Chiefs for two very solid players who can help instantly, but maybe not superstars.

Chiefs Draft • Apr 29, 2022 04:42 AM

@mayjay @Gorilla72 yup, after reading up a bit, sounds like the CB is highly skilled, smart, but a little undersized. I haven’t seen any C Grades yet. Most were As and Bs. Good comps to other undersized guys who have succeeded in the NFL. Everybody seems to think he’s an instant starter.

Chiefs Draft • Apr 29, 2022 02:04 AM

Ha. Go figure. They did trade up!
I dunno much about the CB they got, but we need CBs, so good.
Experts wondering what's happening to the Florida State lineman.

Good for him, but bummer for us.

Was cruising the mock drafts to see where CB is expected to go, and found this gem comparison for any old schoolers:

46 Kansas – HT: 6-6 – WT: 205 – WING: NA – Jr – Braun is a complete player and a crafty scorer who could find a role at the NBA level. Comparison: CRAIG EHLO

Just because Mj Rice is next level strong already doesn't mean he cant shoot. He can shoot. As Self described him when he commited he is a Pure Scorer. He was at Oak Hill putting up numbers on a sorry Oak Hill teamthen transfer to Prolific Prep. Gradey is a Pure Shooter who can go to the NBA right now and be a above 40% shooter but have to work on Ball Handling more to be the complete package

Not a shot at MJ and his skill, but looking at the bigger picture for team needs. 3 pt shooting stands out as a need to me, that’s all.

@BShark said in 2022 Transfer Portal Thread:

@Kcmatt7 My guess right now is Harris, Transfer, Rice, JWill, Zach/Transfer

Maybe Dick ends up starting over Rice.

Drat, losing Och and CB would really crush our outside shooting ability.

This looks like a great lineup for 1983, but maybe not for the modern outside shooting game. That transfer better be rock solid from 3, and an efficient scorer.

That is if what I’m reading about Rice is accurate...his game is more bully ball slash and powerful than outside threat at this point.

Guessing 3-4 early departures. Impact of transfers will depend on who leaves. Think we do need that scoring guard type regardless.

So that means we prolly need to find 4 guys from the portal, or 5-star unsigned guys :)

Needs for next year: shooting

Not sure any of KU’s rumored portal departures fit that role. So I’d guess Self takes on two guardish shooters at least.

One to start, one off the bench.

Maui 2023 • Apr 13, 2022 04:22 PM

@BeddieKU23 said in Next Year's Team Thread:

I really do hope one of Wilson/Braun returns because that guarantees KU would have a featured player back. Both come back and the ceiling for next year is a lot higher then if only one returns.

Before the tourney started I thought we'd see both back. Now we have no idea what would motivate them to come back.

For Braun he's a Kansas kid, a lifetime KU fan and as we've found out his bond with Dejuan Harris goes a lot further then the basketball court. What does Braun want his legacy to be? It's already sky high. Another year could send it to the rafters like Ochai or he leaves on a high like Mario Chalmers did. His NIL game was just starting to ramp up as the season was ending (merchandise/apparel) so that's another thing that may incentivize him to come back if his draft grade isn't to where he has a guarantee.

For Wilson he's got parts of his game that could use developing. The chance to take on that "alpha" role and be a featured scorer could be the kind of opportunity he needs to change NBA minds.

I'm thinking like you do. Could be wrong, though. I think the starters next year will be Juan/CB/Rice/Wilson/Zach with Nigel Pack coming off the bench. I've learned from Embiid that you can't tell what they will do.

This could be a tough group to start in the “modern” game. I think for sure you need at least one better 3 pt shooter in that mix. Not sure who that is just yet...
