I'll be interested to see how the transfers (or non-transfers) for USMNT players pan out. I was hoping Pulisic would end up moving so he could be on the field more consistently. The moves by the goalies to get playing time...even at a lower level...hopefully will pay dividends in November

Poor Pulisic. He just doesn't fit Tuchel's at times non sensical tactical formation. Not sure who does, really. Mostly seems like he doesn't like true offensive wingers. he's got a guy or two just running around up front. Weird, because you'd think "mr all i do is run around Timo Werner" would fit right into that mayhem, but he doesn't. why?

Well, what do i know. Chelsea was Top 3 last season. So, maybe he knows what he's doing. Just seems like a bunch of pissed off players on the team.

His wingers appear to be wingbacks mostly. I'd be frustrated if i played on that team (as Pulisic should be).

This aint generic

I’m a big soccer fan, but I am definitely growing slightly disillusioned with all the whining, diving and bullying the refs.

It’s worse than the NBA sometimes — watching every single player put up his hands in disbelief every time there’s a whistle. Who, me?

I wish they’d put an end to it. Talk back to the ref? Card.

Surround the ref, booted from the game.

Ha, good story @nwhawkfan .

I was lucky enough to see Pele play in the NASL for the Cosmos in the early 80s? Not that i remember, but i'm sure it was exciting!

Agreed Liverpool looked off today. First half at least for sure. I didn't really look to see if they have bunch of new players that need time to adjust.

Chelsea sure needs time to get its new players comfortable. And i'm sure they have coming and going in the next few weeks.

Back to Liverpool/Fulham...was fun to see Antonee Robinson mark superhuman Mo Salah! what a challenge. Looked like he generally kept him in check the first half. made some bad marking decisions in the second though. maybe he was winded.

Watched some of Chelsea-Everton yesterday.

Chelsea has a slew of new players I don’t know much about yet. This one defender with a name I’ll never be able to pronounce is huge (heavier than most)! I assume he must have some speed as well to pair next to Thiago Silva. He’s getting slower by the game.

Pulisic came on as a late sub. Made a few runs.

Anyway, I hope others find this a good place to chat about whatever the new soccer season brings us. Enjoy!

I've got a great name for that conference.

@Kcmatt7 Ha. not like that name will be in use in a few years! :)

As a Big 12 (nee Big 8) grad who lives in Pac-12 (nee Pac-8) country, it's interesting to watch fans in each conference badmouth the other.

I'm hearing exactly the same rhetoric from both sides..."How dare we lower ourselves by taking in schools from THAT conference. They don't compare to the teams in OUR league." The truth is that both conferences are "walking wounded" after they lost their sugar daddy schools.

Personally I'd like to see more cooperation and less backbiting. Let's face it, there's a reason that the Big 10 and SEC didn't come calling for the others: The dollar bill. And the Notre Dame situation makes it even more unlikely that any of the have-nots will join the two majors. The sooner the larger left-behind schools figure this out and start making the best of the situation, the better.

It's open season for attacking each other at the moment. Biggest mouth the winner, they think.

Hard to blame any of em, as they are fighting for survival.

Not sure it matters that much in the end. the BIG and SEC are the top dawgs from here on out. The rest will nibble at the bits.

Conference realignment • Jul 28, 2022 09:48 PM

Apologies if there's a thread already...couldn't find one!

Anyways, the Big 12 better get its sh*t together quickly if they want to survive. Rumors now that the BIG wants the rest of the top tier Pac 12 schools.

Rumor mill:
For the past week or so, the Big Ten commissioner, Kevin Warren, has been steadfast that the conference is not looking to further expand after already poaching both USC and UCLA from the Pac-12 earlier this summer. However, there is a new report out there from CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd that shows that the Big Ten could be after another group of Pac-12 teams in the future.

“According to my reporting, the Big Ten is now targeting Cal, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington in a further expansion that would bring the league to 20 teams at least,” Dodd said. “There is another report out there that the Big Ten is also looking at Florida State and Miami, and at that point would be a monopoly of college athletics at the top of the food chain.”

That would be painful to watch, and painful for the Big 12.

Makes me wonder... since college basketball is so competitive... what are the new areas to cheat in and give your school an advantage? There has to be that line again.

Anyone like to comment on that?

It’s still all about “boosters”. That’s the gray area. How you define booster in the days of NIL is baffling to me.

Boosters still cannot recruit nor funnel money to recruits.

But, they are setting up shell companies to do just that. How do you defend that if you’re the NCAA?

KUAD is making a big push to RCJH, a newish c3 that exists solely for NIL. Have some spare cash laying around and want it to go to the welfare of our SA’s, it’s a great choice and the one preferred by KUAD*

*unofficially

I understand that, but I don’t understand that.

If I’m a guy who went to KU, donate money to KU in many ways, then give money to this RCJH fund, aren’t I a “booster”?

Boosters can give to current players for NIL. The way they’re getting around is saying hey these are the types of opportunities we offer players like you wink wink

Texas Tech is a good example of how this works in practice. Donors have pledged to provide all football players a $20k annual stipend. They’ll absolutely use that on the recruiting trail and say hey kid, come here and it’s $20k in your pocket as long as you’re at Tech. So they aren’t providing inducements per se, but that’s a big part of their recruiting pitch.

My brain hurts trying to figure out this NIL stuff, Farmer!
But coaches and universities can't discuss NIL stuff during recruiting, right?

But if I did react to the Self/Townsend recruiting news...

I’d say it doesn’t appear to be a good sign they’ve been benched.

KU has been fighting this every step of the way (as far as we know). Self-imposing a penalty (no pun intended) can be read no other way than admitting guilt of some sort.

Honestly, speculation is just useless during this invisible IARP “process”.

It completely sucks. An embarrassment for the NCAA and years of torment for all the schools still waiting for a ruling.

I truly can’t believe they haven’t aborted this entire thing, or at the very least realized they need to hire more people to handle the workload. How hard can that be???

Christian Braun… future… Spur? • Jul 19, 2022 04:32 PM

Garrett, a defensive-minded guard, has impressed the Heat with his effort and athleticism. Miami signed him to a two-way contract after last year’s summer league, then waived the 23-year-old in January.

The Nuggets have signed first-round draft picks Christian Braun and Peyton Watson to their rookie contracts, the team announced in a press release. Denver also officially signed undrafted Villanova guard Collin Gillespie to a two-way contract.

Braun, 6″7″, was drafted No. 21 overall last month. He helped Kansas win the NCAA championship this past season, averaging 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per game. He also shot 49.5% from the floor and 39% from downtown during those outings. Assuming the usual 120% of the rookie scale, his deal will be for four years and $13.77MM.

Quinn Sullivan really seemed impressive. It's my first time seeing any of these guys really.

Very fun to watch. Happy to see that. Very much hope that translates to the big boy team.

NBA draft, Jayhawk style • Jul 02, 2022 10:21 PM

The Cavaliers have officially signed 2022 draft picks Ochai Agbaji and Isaiah Mobley, the team announced today in a press release.

The 14th overall pick in last week’s draft, Agbaji received the rookie scale contract that is standard for first-round picks. Assuming he signed for the full 120% of the rookie scale, which is the norm, he’ll earn approximately $3.9MM in year one and $18.7MM across four years.

The 22-year-old Agbaji won an NCAA championship with Kansas as a senior in 2021/22 and enjoyed his best college season, averaging 18.8 PPG and 5.1 RPG with a shooting line of .475/.407/.743 in 39 games (35.1 MPG).

Wow. shocker. Saw an early mock draft for next year, and surprise, surprise! Gradey Dick mentioned as the last pick in Round 1.
Here we are debating his chances to start, when he's a projected NBA pick!
Wadda we know...

  1. G Gradey Dick
    Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 195 pounds | Kansas: Freshman

Dick is way more bouncy and athletic than what meets the eye. On top of that, he can shoot out of the gym. He averaged 17.9 points per game on one of the best high school basketball teams in the country, Sunrise Christian Academy. He knows he'll have to work for that starting slot, but can slide in and help fill the void of Ochai Agbaji (No. 14 this year) and Christian Braun (No. 21) next season.

Christian Braun… future… Spur? • Jun 22, 2022 11:44 PM

I've been thinking for awhile now that Braun would be a perfect fit for the Warriors.

Just saw this story on the Warriors thinking:

"The Athletic's Zach Harper reported in his latest Q&A column, that Golden State is open to moving the pick in order to free up guaranteed money. If they end up keeping the pick, the Warriors are rumored to be interested in Michigan's Caleb Houstan, Kansas' Christian Braun and Ohio State's E.J. Liddell.

"The defending champs are apparently open to moving their 28th pick in the draft, and that could be tied to some guaranteed money causing them an even greater luxury-tax bill, although there isn’t a huge difference between a minimum deal and what the 28th pick would command," Harper writes. "If they do decide to keep it, the Warriors are thought to be interested in Houstan or Christian Braun. E.J. Liddell would be the dream scenario, but it’s hard to imagine him falling to No. 28."

Sure, Friday’s NBA finals Game 4 held more interest for the average American sports fan than a Nations League stroll in a Texan sweatbox against the world’s 170th-ranked team. But did the Grenada game need to kick off on a Friday night at 10pm ET and be broadcast in English on the cavernous ESPN+ subscription streaming service, where viewers may have been distracted by alternative delights such as the La Crosse Loggers versus the Bismarck Larks in the Northwoods baseball league?

Tuesday’s clash in San Salvador, on FS1, Univision and TUDN, also kicked off at 10pm ET as the USMNT continued its war on people who have to get up early the next morning. The game even clashed with a rescheduled home MLS match for one of the continent’s most popular clubs, as Seattle hosted Vancouver. This on the day that MLS announced a lucrative and comprehensive deal with Apple TV; compare and contrast.

Way more entertaining. You nailed it, they truly say it like it is.
