Just Beat Duke, OK! • Sep 24, 2022 04:59 PM

Back to KU football!!

Rock Chalk! a lead at the half. I’m not going to pretend to be spoiled with a 3-0 start to the year…I’ll take a lead at the half! Let’s go!

@RockChalkinTexas That international team is awful. They're missing so many big names it really taints what we're doing to them. I follow golf fairly closely and couldn't tell you who half of those guys are. Jon Rahm? No. Rory? No. Cameron Smith? No? Matthew Fitzpatrick? No. Victor Hovland? No. That's the 5 top ranked International players in the world and none are playing. Meanwhile only one of our guys in the top 10 isn't playing.

@wissox didn’t catch the reason for your reply…but FYI, the President’s Cup (if you’re talking about that), is non European based players, thus the reason for missing guys like Rahm, etc.

USMNT • Sep 24, 2022 05:07 AM

And that field!!! Wow. Hoping to find a story that explains the really bad pitch.

Oh, I have to say that these friendlies seem so unorganized. VAR, no VAR? Who knows. Even the broadcaster ESPN didn’t know the answer. It was used once, but not again on blatant, cardable fouls. Weird.

USMNT • Sep 24, 2022 04:57 AM

Well, didn’t realize they were playing today, so just finished watching!

Entirely forgettable in every way. Uninspired. Lackluster.

The first half was really lazy and bad. Sooo many giveaways. Slight improvement in the second half.

Agree with @focojayhawk . How can you even critique individual offensive players when they hardly touched the ball?

Japan just outsmarted and outplayed the US in every way. Berhalter gets an F for tactics today.

If I recall, Dest didn’t get back in time and his man scored?

Anyway, not a good looking team at all today. No Pulisic and Weah. Pulisic likely would not have helped much given we couldn’t really get the ball forward, but Weah may have helped with some runs to open up some space.

The mystical Reyna touched the ball a few times. Got a cross in. Another time he dribbled from one side of the field to the other, refusing to pass to anybody. Lost that possession I believe. He looks slow and disinterested.

On Japan’s second goal, our defenders simply refused to defend. Three or four guys were to all sides of the oncoming goal scorer, none stepped up and ever got close to him. Just don’t understand that at all. Zero effort to stop him.

Anyway, that was disappointing, but not a big deal in the big picture I guess.

It's interesting how dismissive Berhalter is of Tim Ream. I know he hasn't been awesome for the USMNT in the past, but he's a captain and starter on a Premier League team and yet can't even make the roster? Even with CCV and Richards out!

I like the idea of Weah at the 9. Sargent has played well recently so we'll see if his form holds. The issue seems to be getting the best players on the field and with such great wingers and such a vacuum up front, it'll be interesting to see what Berhalter does. Sadly I think it ends up with Ferreira at the 9. Hard pass.

I think Berhalter's big plan for the back line is simple: have some recovery speed.

Guys like Brooks and Ream don't fit that mold.

Smart plan or not, that appears to be the main prerequisite. speed (ish).

Berhalter likes to hold a high line with defenders. That means they need to be able to play catch up and get back quickly.

Ream seems decent enough. more plodding and strong than speedy though.

@rockchalkjayhawk his handling is exceptional when at top form, speed is good, aerials good, passing good. Only knock is that he can be sticky, but thats a product of youth. The hype is warranted because we need a healthy Reyna to make any real noise this WC

i'm all for it! His pop was one of my all-time faves.

OK, i admit it's just an unusual, weird feeling. 2-0 and leading at the half in game 3!

I haven’t seen him play enough to have an idea.

Wish Weah could play the 9. I think hes one of our best 11 but not our best top left or right. Pulisic and Reyna. And Aarsonsen has been playing centrally for club. We will see there.

Has Weah played wing back?

I betcha Weah could play wing back! hmmm...

Reyna i see started for Dortmund against Man City. Only watched first half. uneventful. I don't see the brilliance of Reyna yet. I hope we do, but in all his starts for the national team, he's not done too much to prove otherwise. I have seen him make a handful of plays, but with all the glory placed upon him, i'm still waiting for more.

He's young though.

@approxinfinity said in USMNT:

Im not impressed by our defense in general. I think besides the 9 problem, we might not point at one person on the D and say this guys a problem… but we should point at the whole group and say this is a problem. Dest is a solid offensive player but not a solid defender. Yedlin is too old, Scally is too young, Cannon is ok, and I dont think i know who Vines is. Zimmerman and Long are the prefered CBs i think, Richards and Long will compete… its been too long and i cant remember my impression of Carter Vickers. Im afraid good teams are going to eat this defense alive.

Well said @approxinfinity !

I think our defense was at one point our strength. Still could be. Without Miles Robinson, it's worse for sure. I liked that central pairing with Zim.

IMO you don't need brilliant defenders on the outside backline. Most of those kind of players across the globe seem offense oriented now. If Dest and Yedlin or whoever can stay in front of their guy, hustle back, don't do stupid stuff, they should be fine.

Agree on CCV. he's been out of the loop until recently.

@AsadZ said in Week 2 (already?) - Chiefs vs. Chargers:

@rockchalkjayhawk Not so well in this game, Kelce and Hardman did most catching.

Unlike previous years, the good thing about this new group is that every week somebody else would step up. Thus opposing teams have to plan for all targets and not just Hill and Kelce.

That Chargers secondary is tough. seemed like nobody could get open regularly. Certainly hope that's not the norm! Scantling and JuJu are quality, proven WRs. I expect them to shine at some point.

Missing Weah for sure. Think he’ll be a super sub or starter?

But, our 9 will not be settled before the World Cup. Is Dempsey still a available???

I just hope he chooses a 9 who can run around and press on D. Any scoring on top of that would be gravy.

What a thread!

Way back when I was at KU in the 80s…

I have two main food memories:

— Late night Pyramid Pizza delivery to the dorm.

— Yellow Sub. Dang were those subs good. Crunchy on the outside. I want one now!

As far as bars, my group of friends mostly hung out at The Hawk. The best ever was fill up your Hawk glass nights for a buck or whatever. Man, I’m remembering stumbling home across campus from The Hawk. No clue how we made it up and down the hill without major injury!

Occasional treks to Johnny’s for a burger and brew.

Cogburns / The Bottleneck was a great place to see live music.

For KU games, Me and my buddy would grab last row seats behind the basket so we could lean against the rail, stand. Didn’t have to camp out back then. Great view of the action underneath the hoop. And a great spot to watch Ron Kellogg hit ā€œ3sā€ before they were 3s from the corner.

Memories!

USMNT • Sep 15, 2022 09:13 PM

I take tremendous issue with Joe Scally being on the final roster, if he makes it.

He's been tremendously awful for the USMNT. I haven't seen his play for club, but man has he been bad for the US.

Vickers i'm hoping is just a temporary replacement for Robinson's roster spot.

Forward: like it matters! ha.

USMNT • Sep 14, 2022 11:50 PM

Looks like we have a tune up roster named for the USMNT.

Never seen a kicker do that before, on pristine turf.

Seen it in college, and it's probably happened plenty of times in high school. Not in the NFL though.

Ironically I did the same thing to my ankle before a season opener once (but on the soccer field). In my defense, it was a muddy mess. Planted my left foot, slipped in the mud and my ankle nearly did a 360! Missed the entire season. Ouch.

Hope Butker is OK.

I read a story about Liverpool yesterday.
Basically called out some of the older guys for absolutely slacking on offense and defense.
Alexander Arnold was hammered for his lack of give a shit on defense, or getting back to play and defend after his runs up the wing.
I didn't watch the game, so i can't say.

Finally got around to watching Chelsea/West Ham.
Chelsea is kind of a mess. Every offensive player just seems lost, stifled, restricted, tied down, boxed in, not sure what to do or where to go on the pitch.
It's like they have a team of wingers but only the wingers who aren't playing whatever Tuchel defines as wing aren't allowed to venture to the wing. so weird.
Pulisic did nothing of note, nor did anybody else in the first 70 minutes.

Ochai's Summer League debut • Sep 03, 2022 04:59 PM

Totally forgot that Cleveland did the exact same thing with Wiggins! Traded him before he even got a practice in!

Ochai's Summer League debut • Sep 01, 2022 11:06 PM

Wow. Cleveland.

No clear path to a lot of minutes in Utah, but i'm no NBA player expert. Seemed like he had a shot at minutes in Cleveland, maybe even as a starter.

But any place has to be better than Cleveland, right? At least he can have a few wives now in Utah.

AC Milan agree loan deal for Sergino Dest (Di Marzio)

Sergino Dest has been linked with a host of top European clubs this summer but has now found a new club, for this season at least.
Di Marzio has reported that a full agreement has been reached between Barcelona and AC Milan for the signing of the USMNT right-back. He will move on loan for the duration of this season and the Italian champions are likely to have the option to purchase him permanently at the conclusion of the loan

Chiefs signings • Aug 31, 2022 04:31 PM

Early rumors were the Chiefs were trying to trade Ronald Jones.
I’m guessing they are still trying, and that’s why he made the 53 man.
I still like Jones. He could easily be a starter if he runs hard.

Some of the positions they chose to overpopulate were odd for sure.

Chiefs signings • Aug 30, 2022 09:52 PM

Well, today's the day for some big roster moves.
The Chiefs are down to a 53 man roster, like the rest of the league.
A bit of a surprise that they parted ways with DL Danny Shelton and Stallworth. I thought Shelton was a lock.
The OL moves were a tiny surprise...releasing Austin Reiter and keeping Prince.
No surprise signings yet, but stay tuned!

The London club has decided to keep the 23-year-old despite interest from Manchester United, Newcastle United, and some other clubs in Spain and Italy.

Well, i'm guessing that the one game i saw Leeds play with all that speed and energy was an outlier...they looked like nothing of the sort today in a loss vs BHA. Still enjoyed watching the US guys.

For those of you wondering, as i was, how this was aggravated assault...

Assault in Kansas is any intentional act or threat of action that reasonably causes a person to feel afraid of impending bodily harm. Threatening to beat someone, when said in a menacing or angry manner, is an assault if the victim believes or could reasonably believe that he is about to be struck or injured.

Aggravated Assault Defined
A felony in Kansas, aggravated assault is an assault that is committed:

with a deadly weapon
while disguised in a manner designed to conceal identity, or
with intent to commit any felony.
Aggravated assault in Kansas is a severity level 7 felony. Aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, in uniform or properly identified and engaged in the performance of his duties, is a severity level 6 felony.

I haven't really watched Leeds lately, so i can only assume they play that way all the time.

Two pretty entertaining EPL games over the weekend.

The Leeds/Chelsea game featured three Americans (at one point). Pulisic, Adams and Aaronsen. I think Leeds may be my new go to team to watch. That means I can finally break out that Leeds cap I bought in England 20 years ago! They are all over the place, as you can imagine with the later two US guys. They shut out Chelsea!

And somehow Newcastle scored three on Man City for a tie.

Chiefs signings • Aug 21, 2022 08:38 PM

I think the Chiefs are stacked with mediocre-ish RB talent. Nothing really wrong with any of them, but they don’t seem to be on that next level. But, is that OK given our offensive approach at times? I think it is.

Per Ronald Jones…I like him too. he is skilled, but he seems to have a rep for putting the ball on the turf.

Ever since Alex Ferguson retired as manager they've been on a long decline, and with Liverpool up next there's no relief in sight. How the mighty have fallen.
