I sure liked Dok's up and under move during the first half. Clearly, Dok is working on his inside game. On defense, what's it going to take for Dok to stop trying to block every shot? Coach Flop says "Dok, you're 7 feet tall; just go straight up and make them score over you, then turn for the rebound. That's all you have to do. When you go up and swing your wrist to try to block every shot, you're never in position to rebound the miss." Coach Self predicted that Dok will shoot 65% from the line. I think he may be right.
Coach Self calls Grimes "Q"; so will I.
Why are we just now putting Dotson in?
All starters in double figures, but Vick. We need to get Vick going.
Listening to Halsey instead of the announcers
And we worried Grimes couldn't hit the 3.
Dok with only 2 rbs. 3 blocks though
So far keeping Ward in check with 4 pts, all at the line.
Vick is off tonight. 1/4 But the passes to him have been off too.
Where's Joel's swimsuit model girlfriend?
17 fouls against us vs. 8 against State. Bullshit calls.
Dedric with 5 pts. but 10 rbs.
Not a prediction, but just a little info from the Mich St exi with N Mich:
Starters:
44 Nick Ward, JR, 6'9" F, 24 pts., 8/12 and 9 RBS.
5 Cassius Winston, JR, 6'1" G, 13 pts., 6/8 and 7 assists
1 Joshua Langford, JR, 6'5" G, 12 pts., 2/8
20 Matt McQuaid, SR, 6'5" G, 8 pts., 3/6 and 2/4 on 3s
25 Kenny Goins, SR, 6'7" F, 0 pts. and 8 RBS.
Bench:
30 Marcus Bingham, FR, 6'11" F, 12 pts. in 9 min
23 Xavier Tillman, SO, 6'8" F. 7 pts.
Coach Fred Hoiberg's son, Jack is a RS Fr.
A lot of experience on the Spartans. The freshman Bingham will likely be called into action to deal with our front line. Let's get it on.
@KirkIsMyHinrich Joel's swimsuit model girlfriend must have been courtside
Has anyone found any video of the Mich St exhibitions? I'd love to watch a little tape on them.
I like that the Ichabods are making it tough for Dok. Dok needs to start playing like he's a junior and the biggest dude on the court.
In pregame, Coach Self said he's starting Charlie Moore and Marcus Garrett at the guard spots. He said he planned to do that even before the Emporia State Game.
Five days until Mich St. What does everyone want to see happen during this exhibition game? I hope Coach Ballard has the Icabods double team the bigs again. I'm sure that was a focus of practice this week. I want to see Dok, Mitch and even Dedric swing the ball back to the perimeter for open 3s.
I'd rather see Quentin Grimes get some time at PG than Marcus Garrett. I'm not sure Garrett handles the ball well enough to be effective at point.
What's a defender to do with Hunt? Try to tackle him high and he runs through the tackle; tackle him low and he hurdles the tackler. Go Chiefs.
Our Chris Harris is in on all the big defensive plays.
Chiefs are finding ways to score. But, only have Hunt's 31 yds. rushing. Mahomes 172 yds. passing and 2 TDs is going to have to carry them.
@JayhawksandChill The word from teammates during summer pickup games was that Charlie Moore was deadly from 3. I wonder if we'll see Coach Self play Dotson at point with Grimes and Moore on the floor. Charlie would take on the role that Svi had of spot up 3 pt. shooter.
Is it to much to hope for KU and KC to win on the same weekend? Denver has got to know their season is on the line today. Tomahawk Chop Time.
So, we're tied for 8th in the Big 12. Maybe we have a chance to beat KState. I'm really happy with the team's win, but why wasn't Bender's throw out the back of the end zone intentional grounding? Is there an exception to the intentional grounding rule for intentional safeties? I really wish we had just punted the ball away. Also, how frustrated was everyone else that Bowen stayed with the 3 man rush on TCU's last drive? But for the butt fumble, we lose that game.
I'm anxious to read TexasHawk10's comments about the game if he can find this thread
I sure don't agree with the safety and the short kickoff. We were lucky that TCU wasn't able to kick a field goal to win it. Why didn't we just punt with 7 seconds left? Punt it away from their returner and rely on the punt squad to tackle the guy. It seemed desperate to take the safety and then hope a second runs off on the kickoff. At least kick it away and not short kick it. Coach Beaty said in post-game they didn't intend to kick to the front line returners. Coach Patterson said the returners were told not to catch the ball, but to just fall on it. Wow, that was close. Rock Chalk
Really nice win. I'm so happy and thankful for the players and the fans in the stands. Hats off to those still able to support our football program.
Yes, it's a tough way to begin the season; the year Kentucky pounded us, the announcers at every game we played thereafter referenced the beat down. But, a win is also a grand way to start the season. I'm glad we are part of the Classic. I hope Dok shows up for the Mich St game.
It's really an honor to participate in this event every year. I wonder what other programs like North Carolina and Villanova think about the same four teams participating every year. Since the kickoff event is so successful, why not just have the previous year's final four play? I'm glad KU is included, so maybe it should be left alone. But, other programs must despise being left out.
@BeddieKU23 Regarding Dedric's 31 pts. Dedric said Coach Self called it the ugliest 31 points he's ever seen scored. Later, in Coach Self's interview, Self didn't admit to the comment and attributed it to Dedric himself. But, Coach Self agreed with the comment and said Dedric was often off balance and out of position. My guess is Coach is telling Dedric he should be doing more and playing better.
I thought it was pretty interesting in the second half that Coach Doty and the Hornets almost caught us napping when they attempted a backdoor lob pass. It was open, but the pass hit the rim. Pretty amusing that Emporia State tried to use our favorite play against us. I really like Coach Doty and I'll try to follow the Hornets a bit this year.
Craig Doty's a well-spoken coach. I'm interested to see how his team does this year.
Strangely, I'm no longer worried about the point guard play. Dotson and Moore have been great. But, what's up with the front court? Except for Dedric, the front court didn't show up.
KU 30 Emporia St 29 in the 2nd half. Yikes is right
I'm really liking Dotson's play. Dotson to Dedric on the fast break for a layup should be a regular thing this year.
@KirkIsMyHinrich Dok's frustrated, but I bet they work on the post double team this week.
Emporia State's keeping it interesting. Their post double team is working and will give us something to improve on the next two weeks.
Only 16 first half points in the paint. ????
KU was 6/16 from 3, 38%
@approxinfinity Garrett's 1/2 from 3, but shoots the ball sideways, instead of shoulders square to the rim. Weird.
Unfortunately, Garrett's jump shot is still ugly.
Finally, the season is here. The quest for number 15 and a National Championship begins. Dotson gets the start at point.
@mayjay AO isn't that far back; I watched him play in the 70's when I sat in the cheap outfield seats back when I was at KU. $5 for a seat then. That was a fun time for Royals fans. George Brett, et al.
@Kcmatt7 I watched Grimes compete in the FIBA tournament and was impressed with his size. The roster says 6'5", 210. He has broad shoulders and isn't afraid to defend bigger guys in the paint. He played bigger than a shooting guard in the FIBA tourney last summer.
Like you JBaller, I'm ready to see our guys play and so I may just focus on basketball. My first hope is that our players approach the Hornets like it's a game, not a scrimmage. With Mich St less than 2 weeks away, I know we won't show much of our offense, but I want to see effort from every player. Who remembers how Wayne Simien approached his first exhibition game? That's what I hope to see tonight.
Anne De Paula is dating Joel. Oh to be an NBA superstar with superstar charisma. Joel's got game.
@BShark Yes, I was disappointed to hear Coach Self complaining about the lack of effort Grimes puts in and his comments about Dedric being low key, but sneaky with his scoring. I always admired Frank and Josh's motors: It showed me they cared about winning.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Dedric that Coach Self has been talking about: "unguardable" and "best passer." Dok may practice his free throw shooting during the exhibitions and Grimes, Dotson and Moore may acclimate to the flow of Coach Self's offense. I can't wait for the season to begin. Finally.
Who may remind me of the players involved in Tom Izzo's isolation play when MSU beat us in the tourney? I still have a mental image of MSt's 4 offensive players isolating 4 of our defenders away from the basket, leaving the game to be decided by two guards going one-on-one. Great play called by Izzo; one of the best I can remember. Can anyone explain why our other 4 defenders let themselves be isolated and became spectators for the decisive play of the game? One KU defender in the paint helping our guard would have solved the problem. How do the rest of you remember this play?
It's just been a long wait for Dedric, KJ, Grimes and the rest to get on the court. I was underwhelmed by the Late Night scrimmage. Looking ahead two weeks to Nov 6, Michigan St probably starts:
Nick Ward, F 6'9", 245 lbs. 12.4 pts.
Xavier Tillman, F/C 6'8", 245 lbs.
Cassius Ward, PG 6'1", 12.6 pts., 49.7%-3 pt shooting
Matt McQuaid, G, 6'5"
Josh Langford, G 6'5"
Winston's 3 point shooting and Nick Ward's inside play seem to be the strengths. Oh boy, do I love beating Coach Izzo. How you going to stop Dok & Dedric Michigan State?
