The 12th man off the bench on the U18 team got 9.8 minutes per game. Self did a great job of getting all 12 guys minutes of playing time.

Svi had another great game against Cleveland going 12/20, 31 pts in 33 minutes. The game went into double OT, but the OT's are just 2 minutes. But, there must be a general consensus that Svi's defense is suspect. Cleveland kept posting Svi up with forwards. Also, Svi wasn't much of a factor in crunch time; most of the offense was turned over to Josh Hart. Still, Svi has made a huge impact in the summer league. Malik and Preston also played. Preston made a crazy double pump three pointer to keep Cleveland close during OT. I have to say that the summer league games have been fun to watch. The Lakers play again Tuesday night at 9 PM against Portland.

@jaybate-1.0 It's Sunday morning and I'm supposed to be getting ready for Mass. But, JB's post reminded me how much I focus on the coaches and how little attention I pay to the work of the athletic director.
I have great respect for Bob Fredrick and absolutely no respect for Lou Perkins. Perkins has such a stink surrounding him that I wish we could erase the taint he has left on our beloved university.

Vick Coming Back • Jul 07, 2018 01:59 PM

I'm already looking forward to the Grimes to Vick backdoor dunk. It's going to be a great season. I can't wait.

I've been watching a bit of the summer league games. Perry Ellis played Friday night for Milwaukee. Great to see him. I hope to see Josh and Frank tonight, but you never know who's going to play.

Jeff Long = New AD • Jul 06, 2018 11:58 AM

Like AD Zenger/HFBCWeiss, I assume Jeff Long comes to Kansas with a football coach in his pocket and ready to assume the job in the next 5 months. Long's hire is a package deal, right? I'm looking forward to a new direction for KU football.

Vick Coming Back • Jul 02, 2018 10:25 PM

@justanotherfan Isn't Dok a guaranteed starter? Coach Self sure seems to like Dok as a starter. Dok was starting as a very raw freshman until he got hurt.

Who do you want at QB? • Jul 02, 2018 10:21 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 TexHawk: Do you remember the UCLA game at Memorial Stadium when KU used a spread offensive line? I don't remember the year, but probably the late 90's. I do remember the absolute slaughter that resulted from whatever blocking scheme we tried that day. It was horrific. The UCLA linemen poured through our oline unblocked all day. Perhaps Terry Allen was our coach then. As poorly as our team has played the last several years, that game stands in my mind as the all-time low. Anyone else remember that game? Hey, thanks to everyone for talking football here.

Vick Coming Back • Jun 30, 2018 06:46 PM

@jayballer73 I'll come around a little bit when fall practice starts and we start getting some new information. I just feel sorry for our football players who put their hearts and souls into practices and games and get very little in return. Seeing less than 10,000 fans in Memorial Stadium is heartbreaking. I'm glad you still support the football team. I'll try to be a better fan and find something to be positive about.

Vick Coming Back • Jun 30, 2018 01:47 PM

@Woodrow Coach Self knows his players better than any of us and I trust he took all of Vick's traits into account when he invited him back to the team. I like Vick and like that he will continue to be the third or fourth scoring option when he's on the court, even with our much younger personnel. Dedric, Grimes, Dok and PG will be the offensive focus, with Vick positioning himself for the open 3 or a pass at the rim. Brilliant, just brilliant. Coach likely has a plan for Vick to work on the skills that the NBA found deficient. Vick will be the icing flower on the birthday cake that everyone keeps eyeing.

Vick Coming Back • Jun 30, 2018 12:36 PM

Who else votes to skip the football season and just start our D1 basketball season in August? For the first time ever, I'm thinking basketball in the summer, not KU football. I've got our starters as Dok, Dedric, Vick, Grimes and a PG to be determined by fall practice. If KJ or someone else beats Vick for the start at the 3 fine, but until then Vick's my guy. Vick's big game experience is going to be important early in the season, i,e, Michigan State. Another season of leaving the opponents open-mouthed on defense when Vick slips along the baseline for another backdoor jam. Grimes showed during the FIBA tournament that he looks to pass to his teammates, so I expect to see Grimes getting many assists to Vick. By the way, Coach Self successfully juggled playing time for the U18 team that was loaded with talent. I did think he took advantage of the situation and played Grimes, Robinson-Earl and Hurt together a lot. RCJHB 2018-19

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 10:37 PM

I'm frustrated with the prospect of another season of constant requests for eligibility updates from Coach Self and the tendency on his part to remain optimistic for his player, like we saw with Diallo, Alexander and Preston. How many times last season was he asked about Billy Preston's availability and Coach Self responded that he expected Billy to be cleared to play any day. I see the same situation arising with Silvio, except Silvio is a proven player who will be sorely missed if he doesn't play. I'll always wonder if Billy was going to contribute double digit points (that's what I penciled in preseason) or was just going to be a 6'10'' disappointment. I hate that I'll never know. I don't get frustrated with absences due to injuries, like Joel's back; those are an understandable part of sports. It's the uncertainty surrounding the prospectively ineligible player that drives me batty.

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 06:06 PM

The competition for overall basketball wins is a three-way race with Kentucky at 2263, KU at 2248 and NC at 2232. Both UK and NC finished last season at 26-11, so KU's 31-8 gained five games on both schools. Just 16 more wins than Kentucky over some period of time and KU will be in its rightful position atop all universities for most basketball wins.

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 12:00 PM

Silvio's great. I like the kid. But, I hate the distraction of his possible ineligibility and the prospect of sanctions against KU for playing him. For the 2018-2019 season, KU can't claim ignorance about the allegations against Silvio's guardian. I like competing with Kentucky and North Carolina for most wins. I'd hate to see an entire season's wins taken away from KU. I look forward to the season without eligibility issues, so we may just enjoy college basketball.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 17, 2018 12:50 AM

I hate the ref cam. It needs to go the way of the helmet cam

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 17, 2018 12:45 AM

I like the way team USA takes it to the rim on offense.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 17, 2018 12:02 AM

Jballs, you are the man

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 16, 2018 12:36 PM

Youtube will broadcast the USA v. Canada game at 7:15 Central Saturday. Even without Massey, I look for team USA to breeze by Canada. The officiating should be more even since the Central/South American bias will be absent. I really like that Coach Self plays Grimes, Hurt and Earl together. These three already play like teammates; they look to pass to each other to help each other score. I hope both Hurt and Earl commit to KU. It's been fun watching them at such a young age.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 15, 2018 11:56 PM

Grimes's game high 26 points leads Team USA to the finals against Canada. Yes, it's a little early to call the Canada v. Puerto Rico game, but I'm calling it. Anyone going to watch Canada v. Puerto Rico?

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 14, 2018 11:09 AM

USA v Ecuador at 5PM Central Thursday.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 13, 2018 11:59 AM

I've enjoyed watching the FIBA U18 games. The one thing that I've noticed about Grimes is his size; on the defensive switches he's strong enough that he plays solid defense in the paint against bigger players. Whereas Garrett is slender, Grimes is stronger and is physical on defense. On offense, I like that Grimes looks for multiple ways to score like Malik Newman. I'm looking forward to the game with Canada.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 12, 2018 01:47 PM

The Puerto Rico game actually starts at 5pm Central. All these games are available to watch anytime on the FIBU website on youtube.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 12, 2018 11:21 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Despite the lack of competition from Panama, I still enjoyed watching the athleticism of the USA players. USA plays Puerto Rico today at 6. This game will show us if our young guys have the discipline to play as a team or if it will continue to be me first players. I still prefer to watch basketball to the MLB.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 12, 2018 12:54 AM

@BShark Bill's USA team has some tough opposition coming up, so I think it's great the guys get to play loose tonight. This gives the coaches time to work on some sets.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 11, 2018 11:05 AM

@jayballer73 Team USA plays Panama at 7:15 Central Monday.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 10, 2018 03:56 PM

@BShark Thanks. I think I've found the tournament's broadcast on youtube by searching FIBA. I'm watching the beginning of the Chile v. Ecuador game, so I hope the USA game will work as well at 5 Central.

FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes • Jun 10, 2018 01:14 PM

The usab.com website shows our guys play the Dominican Republic Sunday at 5pm Central, then we play Panama at 7:15pm Central on Monday. It doesn't indicate that the games will be broadcast anywhere. The game isn't shown on ESPN 3. FIBA on you tube looks promising, but I don't see Sunday's game.

If anyone locates the games, please post viewing instructions. I'm ready to fly to Buffalo, Uber to Canada with my Iphone and put the game on Facebook. Boy do I miss KU basketball this time of year.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? • Apr 23, 2018 12:52 PM

I have to say that I've really enjoyed watching a few of the NBA playoff games. I just watch our guys and just like when they were in Jayhawk uniforms, I cringe every time they miss a FT or make a turnover. It was fun watching Oubre and Markeiff finish yesterday's win. Does anyone else hold their breath when Joel has the ball at the top of the key? He can really look awkward at times. But, he's a savant on defense. I don't know how he gets up and down the court with that huge Morris-like chip on his shoulder. RCJH

Embiid • Apr 20, 2018 01:55 AM

Joel was a beast in Game 3: Team high 23 pts. in 30 minutes. He is intense. Finally, the Sixers are competitive.

FBI • Apr 11, 2018 12:07 PM

I hate that we may be forced to place our hopes of retaining the 14th consecutive Big 12 Conference Championship and Final Four appearance on the Cam Newton NCAA precedent. It's a sad, sad day for KU Basketball. Would someone please name De Sousa's guardian, so I have someone besides Adidas to despise?

Game Day Chat room • Mar 31, 2018 11:10 PM

The curse of the dome: Michigan 2/13 and Loyola 0/3 on 3 ptrs. I sure hope our guys shoot better from 3.

Game Day Chat room • Mar 31, 2018 11:06 PM

Only two Michigan starters have scored. Tight, tight, tight on the big stage. Go Ramblers

Game Day Chat room • Mar 31, 2018 09:46 PM

I'll be rooting for Loyola to Ramble on. What a great story the Loyola players will have to tell whether they win or lose.

Final Four bound!!! • Mar 28, 2018 11:51 AM

How does Villanova stop Dok on offense? If Dok doesn't put himself on the bench, Dok is KU's most likely difference maker. Both Spellman and Paschall at 6'9'' give up heighth, but also close to 40 lbs. to the big guy.

Given the masterful defensive strategy employed by Coach Self to slow down Bagley, I can't wait to see how coach utilizes Dok's size advantage at our offensive end. Duke did a great job of defending the entry passes to the post, but Villy's front line doesn't have the same athleticism we saw with Duke. Saturday just can't get here soon enough for me. RCJH

Newman, not Graham has become the leader of this team. The win over Duke goes first to Newman, then to Svi and then to Silvio. Newman scored all our points in OT. But, without Svi's 3 to tie the game in regulation, without his 10 rbs and particularly without his smothering defense on Bagley, KU doesn't survive and move on. Silvio was a beast during this game; he fought for the ball and neutralized some of the Duke size advantage. WOW. What a win.

I hope Dok is getting evaluated for a possible concussion. He said after the game, that after he fell in the first half; he didn't feel right; and he wasn't himself. I remember the play: it looked like Dok got poked in the eye. Dok said he fell and hit his head. I'll have to go back and watch it again. I hope the staff paid attention to his post-game interview. It's just like a young guy not to mention a possible head injury to anyone.

Final Four bound!!! • Mar 26, 2018 01:33 AM

@cragarhawk Excellent observation: Malik Newman is Mr. March

I'm really proud of Svi battling with Bagley in the paint. Svi's playing tough. Badass

KU Elite 8 game chat • Mar 25, 2018 12:54 PM

I'm glad the games are in the afternoon. It's going to take an epic effort by all our guys. Our experience will prevail against the 4 starting freshmen that Duke puts up against us.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:27 PM

Boy, I thought the end of the Seton Hall game was torture with no one guarding Carrington. Against Clemson, our last field goal was at the 4:44 mark. Come on guys, almost 5 minutes without a field goal to finish a tournament game. We were hanging on by one manicured fingernail against the furiously clawing Tigers. Yeah, yeah survive and move on, but let's continue to be as aggressive on offense as we were to get the lead. Malik can lead the offense when Devonte sits. Play with confidence-you've earned it.

KU vs Duke • Mar 24, 2018 12:12 PM

The Duke/Syracuse game was awful to watch. Torture really. I've become accustomed to faster play, so watching zone defense by both teams was much worse than paint drying. The last time I saw zone by both teams was in middle school.

Vick is going to be the key player Sunday. He must be aggressive and confident, looking first for his own shot from the lane, then passing to Dok and Vick when the defense collapses on him. We'll need better 3 point shooting to win this one.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 01:25 AM

If survive and move on is our intent, then that's what we're doing. Good grief. How long since we made a basket.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:35 AM

@StLJhawk And I like Newman's smile. Confident and having fun.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:31 AM

Good grief: it's the theatre crowd at the game. Please get up and cheer.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:19 AM

Dok doesn't have to win the game on defense, just be a big presense. He doesn't have to win it on offense; just let the dunks come if they are there; otherwise pass out to a guard.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:13 AM

Dok's elbow might get him to the bench early in the 2nd half.

GAMEDAY is here Chat • Mar 24, 2018 12:12 AM

Great start by Newman, now we need him to get aggressive again. He went quiet at the 15 min mark.
