Dok and DeSousa, 16 points 9 RBs. Great start to this game.
I'm happy to be in the Sweet 16, but the last 3 minutes of the Seton Hall game just about killed me. KU just can't seem to help itself at times when the opponent is on the ropes. Missed FTs, TOs, and allowing the opponent to shoot unguarded 3s was a very tortuous finish. When Mitch overthrew a pass to Devonte following the inbounds pass and hit nothing but bench, it appeared our guys were overwhelmed by the situation. I was pretty sure we had it, but wow did we let the Pirates stay in the game.
WVirg's press doesn't have 1/10th the energy they use when they play us. There's no reason to even press the way they are playing.
But, Dok's two offensive fouls for misusing his elbow were costly and could have cost us the game. I hope our staff is reminding Dok he was able to score over Delgado and he didn't need to use the elbow to get off his shot.
I thought our guards' entry passes to Dok were spectacular and really showed how our offense runs.
This is exactly why the NCAA Tournament is so captivating if my team is still playing: I will watch parts of Clemson/Auburn to gauge the competition; KState/UMBC to cheer a home state team and follow this year's Cinderella; WVirg/Marshall to cheer for the Big 12 and follow the Marshall story line and TXAM/NC to root against Ole Roy. Hey, I'm still having fun and enjoying the tournament after the first weekend. RCJH
Dok doesn't need to use that elbow. He just needs to go up and shoot.
Garrett showing he's not ready to play. Can't hit FTs and can't handle defensive pressure. Self was very slow to sit him down.
is there anyone at Intrust Arena who saw Dok warm up? I'm curious if he's still limping.
I think KU played UMBC some 20 years back. This is what makes the tournament fun and terribly sad. Finally, the first number one seed to lose threat is over and I won't have to worry as much every year when we are a number one seed. RCJH
Do you see any KState fans at the game? Good grief, the entire section behind the KState bench is empty. Creighton has a lot of fans.
@Crimsonorblue22 I know it looks like Marshall is being rude, but the lack of any reaction from the Bearcat players suggests to me that he just said "Good game" or something similar. If Marshall had said something inappropriate the players would have looked back at him, right? The lack of reaction by the players is most telling to me.
OSU's defense is great right now. They are all over Devonte.
I'm not a believer in predictions, but I am concerned about our level of play against OSU, especially after the half-hearted effort in the second half of the Texas game. I hope it's important to Devonte and Svi to keep their streak of no sweeps by any Big 12 team during their KU careers. But Vick and Newman may very well take the game off. My hope is for offensive and defensive intensity to build momentum for the upcoming tournaments.
Will our bigs ever think to box out first, then look for the RB?
I really think Dok had more RBs than 3. He's been pretty active tonight.
We must be seeing a trend? Only one FT in our first half.
Texas Tech seems to be experiencing a hangover from Saturday's loss: WV 27 TT 9 with 8 min left in the first half.
I'm still celebrating Devonte's and Svi's great victory over Texas Tech. Devonte was the man on Saturday. Saturday's victory is why Devonte came back for his senior season and never looked at pro ball. Coach Self's emotional interaction with DeVonte when he came off the court is one of my all time favorite KU moments. RCJH
@BShark Thanks for the image; it's my new desktop image. RCJH
Devonte carried us to the championship today. What a great Jayhawk.
It's a given that KU will get more fouls called this game after the 35 FTs we got against WVA.
The first four minutes of the second half will tell us a lot. OU is still very much in this. No coasting.
@JayHawkFanToo You missed or ignored my point: If KU lost a close road game and the opponent shot 33 more free throws, KU fans, myself included, would be irate over the officiating. Huggins ejection was very understandable, even predictable given the free throw disparity.
KU was awarded 35 FTs and WVA just 2. I don't blame Huggy for being pissed. If the stats were reversed, tell me you wouldn't be complaining. That's as large a disparity as I can remember. I'm not a fan of WV's style of play, but 35 to 2?
Hawks might want to consider guarding the corner 3. Jeez.
Welcome back everyone. Thanks for the in-game commentary. I didn't even check the site until after the game. RCJH
I'm hoping the guards feed the post today and get Doke to the line. This is a great opportunity for Doke to gain some FT shooting confidence. RCJH
@truehawk93 Regarding Svi guarding Wade, I thought Svi's defense against A&M was his best defensive game ever. I finally saw him getting after it on defense. I hope that continues.
Can anyone tell me why Doke and the rest always jump out of the gym on the pump fake? Good grief they look foolish.
If I wasn't watching the game and heard Young only had 8 points at the half, I would guess KU was well ahead. It appears the OU cast is better than some thought.
The guys are really battling at the 7 min mark. Well at least Doke hasn't missed any free throws in the 3 min he's played.
I'm watching IState at Texas on ESPNU and I'm feeling mad/sad for Mo Bamba and the rest of the Longhorns for the complete lack of support on their home court. Texas fans have an incredible opportunity to watch a very special player, but unless they're dressed like empty seats, they are choosing to do something else tonight. Maybe, there was a giant snow storm in Austin this evening.
I was thinking Marcus Garrett would also get 6-8 minutes of defense on Young. That would give Graham some relief and put a really active defensive player on a really active offensive player.
Oh how I wish BIFM had one more year of eligibility, heck one game to show Young how the Jayhawks get it done on defense.
@Crimsonorblue22 When I watch Doke ready himself to shoot a free throw , he spins the ball in his hand just as he starts his shooting motion. He spins it diagonally. I watched Jackson backspin the ball all last year. I assume spinning the ball is a nervous habit and not something a D1 coach would ever teach a player is part of a successful free throw motion. Doke, maybe you need to hear it from me, on every free throw the ball needs to be at rest in your dominant hand at the start of your free throw motion; the only spin comes from your wrist as your release the ball. The more static the ball is in your shooting hand as you release it, the more accurately it will be propelled toward the rim. Free throw accuracy is about technique, confidence and level of fatigue. Very straightforward and easily taught.
I complained last year that Coach Weber was out on the court during play last year and sometimes interfered with the opponent's players. I noticed he is staying within the coaching box this year. It appears the league took care of the problem.
@jaybate-1.0 Isn't it most likely that WV players expended all their emotion in the first half and then with a 13 point lead they believed they had already won the game? I've seen KU players do the same thing. Once a team loses that edge, it's very difficult to regain it. WV's offense was absent most of the second half.
Amazing win. Amazing. My sound health can't take much more of this. What a season.
@mayjay Thanks for the correction. That fan's body check still pisses me off.
Not Carter, Number 21, Wesley Harris punched a TT fan wearing a white ball cap in the back of the fan's head after the fan bumped past Harris while running toward the crowd on the court. The punch knocks the hat off and you can see from the fan's reaction he's confused by the punch. Of course the fan shouldn't be on the court, but an opposing player still can't punch the fan in the back of the head just because the player got bumped when the fan was jumping as he ran toward the crowd already on the court. The TT fan's conduct is way different than the KState fan who intentionally body checked Wayne Selden in Manhattan.
Malik was great against Iowa State. I hope that continues. Svi failed to switch men defensively time and time again allowing his man wide open shots. But without Svi's offense, it's another home loss. In eleven minutes, Lightfoot missed his only attempt on a 3 and had exactly one rebound. Outrebounded at home by 10. Good grief.
The Mavericks look tired on defense this half. I think they will finish the game just shooting 3s.
@Crimsonorblue22 I missed Wainright's TD. I really can't watch much of Beaty's folly. Kansas Football: The futility is infuriating.
I'm curious about the attendance today. All I could see on television was the bowl and student section, which I estimated to be about 2,000. I don't pay any attention to the announced attendance. I paid for a ticket for my daughter, but she's at home today.
@Lulufulu I'm concerned about Lightfoot's lack of rebounds. In 25 min., he only had one rebound. He's so active that it surprises me he isn't rebounding better.
A touchdown underdog at Memorial Stadium to winless Baylor is another slap in the face of Coach Beaty, AD Zenger and all KU football supporters. I'll be watching the outcome of this game with great interest. A loss here must result in a coaching change, right? If we stay with Coach Beaty, what is going to get so much better next year that we might win 2 games?
@JayHawkFanToo Many thanks for the box score.
If anyone has located a box score of the game, could you post it here or post the link? I'm a box score guy.
I'm curious who everyone thinks will be the starters and the best matchups for Sunday's exhibition with Mizzou. I really don't know anything about the Missouri team, other than they are young and that 6'10", freshman Michael Porter is expected to be a talent. Can Doke, Preston and Lightfoot slow him down? Our guards should dominate the game, right?
I'll be listening on radio just like games we played in the 80's and I'll be missing Max and Bob the whole time. Should we start a pool on how many minutes Doke plays before he fouls out?
Don't we all know it by now: Beaty isn't the guy to bring back our winning football program. I give credit to Coach Meacham for his work improving our offense in the games before IState. But, every other aspect of our program has gotten worse, much worse. Both line coaches must go right now. I like Beaty as a person. He and his staff made progress in the recruiting area. But on the field, which is the only thing that matters, our Jayhawks are a joke. Beaty's comment about needing some tough players is telling: our lines are not tough enough to compete. I suspect the reason our players aren't tough enough is because our coaches aren't tough enough. We need new line coaches today and a new head coach by summer.
