Odds On Diallo • Aug 23, 2015 10:01 PM

I don't quite understand how or why Self and KU would waste anytime on a player that is even remotely doubtful. KU doesn't simply blindly accept these students. Either there is something wrong with the qualifying process and department or this is a D1 NCAA ruse to disrupt the KU program. Remember, we do face the NCAA's beloved UK early in the season and we are in fact some what favored with our experience.

Also, if we have a program clearing house at KU, which I'm pretty sure we do, then we also have our own NCAA officer that we run these issues through at the time of signing or even prior to signing. There's got to be a way for Self to work with the KU clearinghouse officials and the NCAA officer to determine whether these kids are eligible. In other words, this is bullsh*t at it's finest and the NCAA loves playing this hide and go seek game, I'M SICK OF IT. Unless the kid has a horrible record or a bad transcript, qualify him. Self's hands are tied and he has to play the game. My guess is, Self signs these kids based on prelim information and the NCAA simply uses KU as an example to other programs.

I will say it again, again, and again...UK can't possibly be qualifying their recruits. How in the hell does KU get so many questionable recruits that are unqualified and UK steam rolls the clearinghouse with recruit after recruit? Remember, UK does have a connection with the NCAA too. I'M SICK OF IT. They have all but ruined the game of basketball.

Damn it...Why doesn't someone do an independent investigation of the freakin' NCAA and find how crooked their so called officers are that work these investigations. I guarantee you Calipari has someone working the system to get his kids qualified. No way in hell he has a near perfect qualifying recruiting process. The only recruit that failed to qualify at UK was Kanter. His qualifying issue was so blatant and if you talked to UK fans to this day, they will tell you that he was qualified. Even Calipari had him on the bench and defied the NCAA ruling. I tell you that is the worst recruiting program in the NCAA.

Cliff • Jun 26, 2015 09:15 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Cliff didn't hurt KU. Cliff hurt Cliff. KU did the smart thing by not playing Cliff. KU actually benefited by not playing Cliff. You're looking at the situation the wrong way. You're looking at from a purely KU program and fan situation. This is all Cliff, not KU. I really don't know if Cliff would've made that much difference against WSU or any other team. KU lost as a team, not as individuals. KU could've beat WSU without Cliff. KU didn't show up and doubt Cliff would've made much difference.

Cliff • Jun 26, 2015 09:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Why is it a "bad day for KU?..." KU had NOTHING to do with Cliff's demise. If he translates not playing all those games as KU's fault, then he's a fool and his parents aren't teaching him much. These kids want the responsibility of an adult, but they have no idea what they're doing. If there's a problem, they want to whine and blame a coach, program or a school.

What was Self and KU supposed to do? Play him, knowing there were illegal issues pending and then get penalized for playing Cliff? STUPID! Cliff needs to grow up, take responsibility, shut his mouth, and address the individual who caused this...NOT KU. Now, he needs to man up and go to work. It's time to put his big boy pants on in a man's league. He's a boy playing with men, mentally. He's reminding me a bit of Demarcus Head Case Cousins. Even Cousins is growing up and settling into the league. This proves these boys are still way behind in so many ways.

Man up Cliff, you're going to play with the big boys now.

Florida Gulf Coast combo guard to WUG • Jun 22, 2015 01:19 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I thought it would be interesting to give Codi Miller-McIntyre a chance. He seems like a great kid. But Manning may know something about him that wouldn't work in Self's system. He's a senior this year and would've been a great veteran option out of the ACC.

Self and Co will be fine with Dooley's guard or we wouldn't have him.

@HighEliteMajor
I was thinking of Codi Miller-McIntyre.

NBA v. NHL & CBB • Jun 15, 2015 04:43 AM

LBJ- "WHY DID I GET THEM to TRADE THAT KID FROM KU?" I bet LBJ beats his head against the locker each night they lose. I guarantee you things would be different with Wigs. KLove has been a total flop.

I would love to see Wigs against Curry. Dang, what a match that would've been. I'm not too impressed with Thompson at this point. Wigs is a far better option over both Thompson and Barnes. LBJ's ego got the best of him this year and traded his way right out of a WC. I'd say Golden State just about won the WC tonight. Wigs still has the better of the deal either way, he won.

It was early in Self's coaching career. However, when a kid gets stabbed, it makes you ask questions. It seems JR knew exactly what happened and had a hard time dealing with the facts. It seems he was an innocent kid that got in the way of a knife fight. Then, he was mistreated. Why am I typing this? It's moot. He was expelled and kicked off the team by a major university, and an experienced head coach. I'm sure Self thought long and hard before making that unfortunate decision.

Did Vick get the kiss of bench? • Jun 12, 2015 03:42 AM

I seriously doubt Self went through the trouble getting Vick only to let him sit the bench. I know Self's psycho tendencies, but I don't see Vick sitting the bench. I don't think he's going to get much at first. I actually see KU being significantly deeper than many of us were discussing prior to Vick and Diallo.

We now have true back-ups for each position:

Mason-Graham

Selden-Svi-Vick (I think Self is going to keep Vick for the long term)

Svi-Green-Vick (Green's recovery seems to be better than expected)

Ellis-Traylor-Bragg (I think Ellis will play some 3 in certain games, maybe? maybe not!)

Diallo-Lucas-Mick

Coleby- ineligible for transferring

Embiid, Alexander, Diallo>Karviar Shepherd • Jun 12, 2015 03:36 AM

@drgnslayr Love really let that whole Wiggins thing down for the Cavs. Love is not thriving in the Cavs system like many ie. LBJ wanted. Wiggins actually became the best of that deal.

Embiid, Alexander, Diallo>Karviar Shepherd • Jun 12, 2015 03:34 AM

I'll never understand the Shepherd hype. I vaguely remember him giving KU a sniff. He then stayed in Texas, which is fine and understandable. But as someone posted, he didn't live up to his hype. Yes, he had flashes, but he never really gained consistency. So, I was never really comparatively impressed with him. He seemed to have skills, good attitude, and overall good player, but he's a should've, would've and a could've. We'll never know...will we?

RICO GATHERS ARRESTED AT WALMART. • Jun 12, 2015 03:26 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I was thinking Giddens too. He turned out to be a thug. I also remember his altercation that resulted in him getting stabbed in the leg. Self then cut ties. He then went to New Mexico St.

Dwight Coleby To Kansas • Jun 01, 2015 02:33 AM

Hurd is quoted saying that Vick is a Jayhawk regardless of the reclassification. He's all KU either this year or next. So, either way Vick is coming to KU come hell or high water. The only thing is do we need Vick a bit more than Chukwu? Either way, Chukwu has to sit. So he won't make an immediate impact. Vick would be an immediate impact player sooner than later under the current situation at the 2 and 3.

It would be nice to land Chukwu. If Vick waits next year, we sign Chukwu. If Vick commits 2016, we could have Coleby, Vick, and maybe Chukwu next year. We lose Ellis and Traylor next year which will make room for Vick next year too.

Could Self be re-evaluating his strategy by allowing Vick to commit in 2016 and giving the paper to Chukwu? We would have two bigs sitting the bench, but making progress on the scout team. Chukwu and Coleby would slide nicely into Traylor and Ellis' spot next year.

I'd really like to see Svi in the 2 with Selden for future depth with Vick. Green would be back for the second half of the season, but not full speed. Self may have a lot of confidence in Svi and Green to handle the 3 this year.

Self will be loaded with Green, Svi, and Vick. Selden may be gone next year too. This would mean that either Svi or Vick would fit nicely into the 2. All three could play the 2 or the 3.

One thing is for sure, we will be shallow at the 2 with Selden and Graham supporting Frank at the point. Graham will have to support Frank and Selden. I'd like to see Svi slide into the 2 backing Selden. It all depends on Vick. If he stays in 2016, then Chukwu will sign, but we won't have Vick who will be sorely needed. So, do we take Vick and pass on Chukwu now? Or, allow Graham and Svi to step up to the challenge, and get Chukwu? These are all good problems for Self. Remember, Diallo might be gone after this year too. Coleby would be a replacement for Diallo. We would likely have Bragg for Ellis. Chukwu would be a great strength inside after being part of the scout team and Diallo gone.

So, you strategists can mull this over for a while until we hear from Vick. I find it odd that Vick is taking so long. I thought he would make a decision middle to the end of this past week. If Vick commits in 2016, we get Chukwu. We go with who we currently have, adding Bragg and Diallo, which are two strong additions. I just think we could be very shallow at the 2 and 3.

Here's a wild idea, what if Self works Ellis and/or Bragg at the 3?
BTW- Mickelson will be gone next year too.

Bulls searching for new coach • May 29, 2015 12:41 AM

I can't believe there's an entire thread devoted to Fred "the Mayor" Hoiberg on a KU website. I don't hate the guy, but do you really think any ISU fan would have a thread dedicated to Bill Self? I seriously doubt it.

It shows the basketball desperation and withdraws many are experiencing in Jayhawk Nation.

My wasted opinion on Hoiberg is/was that he's not healthy enough to endure the NBA schedule. His condition will not allow him to coach at the NBA pace. This was discussed back when he arrived at Ames and the consensus was he will likely remain at ISU for the remainder of his career. Anything is possible, but don't think his health allows him to coach an NBA team. He left and if he was interested, he would've never left the NBA in the first place.

I will never get this time back.

Off-Season Pop Quiz • May 24, 2015 02:04 AM
  1. Chukwu, definitely a HCBS must have for his system to work perfectly.
  2. Shrooms in OKC
  3. Band of Brothers, Tombstone, Shawshank, Greenmile, Dirty Dozen, Patton, Caddyshack, Top Gun, Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide, Remember the Titans...I can't stop...Big Jake...
  4. at least 1

Fun!

@ajvan You mean the Squid should take something out of Self's big man book. Self's bigs are way more productive and prepared for the league than Calipari. The only two bigs that standout for Calipari are Cousins and AD. However, they promoted Calipari, not the other way around. Very few of Calipari's big men really reached their ceiling. If Self had Calipari's big men, Self would coached the hell out of them. Self gets way more from his bigs than Calipari.
The real sad commentary is Calipari lands these bigs and they pretty much leave they way the arrived in Lexington. I'm not saying Calipari can't or didn't coach them, but big for big, I'll take Bill Self every time. He'll give you more big for the buck.

I like the idea of landing both Chukwu and Bolden. Why not?

(

Bolden still reminds me a bit of Landen Lucas in high school.

A great get and wouldn't necessarily be needed this year, but huge next year in light of our big man situation.

Bleacher Report says... • May 17, 2015 11:59 PM

Solid recruiting class and knew he would commit fairly quickly.

Welcome to Lawrence Mr Vick. Welcome to bball history.

@HighEliteMajor I think you're right. It's late and these recruits tend to make decisions faster at this point. If Vick commits, he will do so immediately or even during his visit to KU. However, now that UK has offered, it may cause him to pause. I don't think UK has the recruiting Mojo as in the last few years. Regardless, if we get Vick it will be during or immediately after his KU visit.

If Vick takes his time, it will be interesting to see what Eubanks will do. I think if Vick delays, Eubanks will commit during or after his visit. If neither commits, I have no idea where they will go at that point. I do believe we'll get one fairly quickly. If the staff is spending some extraordinary time with Vick, it may be telling who Self and Co want. However, if we miss on Vick, my guess is Self and Co will have an all out press on Eubanks.

I personally am leaning toward Eubanks. I like his game and think his ceiling may be a bit higher. I like his size too. He reminds me a bit of BMac.

WUG • May 12, 2015 03:54 AM

I think the WUG will benefit Bragg big time. It should get his feet wet and introduce him into Self's system. I think it will benefit and possibly give Graham some extra incentive and confidence. This may be what Graham needs to fine tune his game. The sole benefactor will likely be Graham. The others will too, but not as much as Graham. I wish Greene was able to play. He could really use this trip. Our bigs should get some good reps too.

@Crimsonorblue22 Nothing against Cliff, but I think it's best KU, Self, and Cliff part ways altogether. I just don't think we need any stink created from his unfortunate drama to follow KU around everywhere. We need to let him go and give that stink some time to fade away.

Tevin Mack • May 12, 2015 03:29 AM

@JayHawkFanToo It's easy to bring it in a tourney as a flash in the pan, but to bring it every single game on a big time stage like the B12 is a different story. I agree, he does remind me a bit of Turner Gill and KU football. I think Shaka will get a rude awakening in the B12. I see him lasting 2-3 years and UT fans will be calling for his resignation. I think he had a great ride at VCU, but again, it's not the B12.
I love Turner Gill and he's a great guy, just wasn't D1 head football coaching material. I think the comparison, though different sports is fairly interesting to say the least.

Tevin Mack • May 12, 2015 03:25 AM

I thought this kid would follow Shaka to UT. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Self lands him, not Shaka'd, just pleasantly surprised.

Tevin Mack • May 12, 2015 03:24 AM

@wrwlumpy So are all the Big Red bball fans. They can't wait to see him play. They have high hopes for him.

@REHawk I couldn't agree more. Diallo is a great learner and understands the game. If he buys completely into Self's system, he's going to be nasty. I also agree that he's going to provide KU with a much needed motor. He can set the pace of a game. If he plays up to his potential and excels, there will be some great games.

Which Guard? • May 12, 2015 02:42 AM

I'm not sure about the qualifying thing at Baylor. I must admit, haven't been following these two much. I should.
Eubanks reminds me of a more polished LeBryan Nash with way more bball sense. He seems like he has a high bball IQ.

(

Love his court awareness, instincts, ball fakes, and pump fakes. He seems methodical and looks for the right shots. He runs the court and sets his teammates like a pg. Either one is a good get, but the Eubanks Baylor glich may not be a good sign. I think overall, Vick would fit best and give us a great option that can play 1-3,4. I do think Eubanks is the better post fit.

Eubanks reminds me a little of Lance Stephenson.

I think the Mack kid follows SHaka to UT.

I wish nothing but the best for Billy Clyde. He's had a really bad case of life happening. I hope he finds a true recovery from all that life has dealt him. He's truly one of the greats that experienced some really bad misfortune and it started when he left TAM. I think it was UK giving him the boot that started his downward slide. It's a very sad case for a really great coach.

@JayHawkFanToo Let's hope Bill Self and the guys change my language soon. This will correct all your sentence concerns. Quote or no quotes, we all want a NC...Let's not get caught up in semantics. We can all agree on wanting a NC.

@JhawkAlum Good point, let's not become a little brother while we enjoy under achieving when compared to Dook, UK, or any other program. You do hear yourself settling for Dook and UK winning NC while we enjoy watching?

I'll keep my expectations high and compare KU to only the achievements of KU, not other programs. But I refuse to become lil' bro to any other program.

@JayHawkFanToo I never said KU under achieved. I'm excited about the conference champions, Sweet 16s, Elite 8s, and F4, and even a championship game. If you want to compare KU to the other failing teams that missed, then it simply means KU is always a bridesmaid and never a bride kinda idea.

Don't lower the standard and settle for what your post is so eloquently trying to convey. You're right for the most part, but if you keep settling, then we'll always be on a post like this relishing all the under achievements.

Let's keep our expectations high, enjoy the under achievements you clearly seem to enjoy, but let's focus on a NC from time to time too.

I'm sure all KU alum/alumna/fans...whomever want a NC. Let's not settle for mediocrity. We are KU and we are bball history.

I know you're a big fan...I couldn't resist.

@dylans Sorry about your dog.

@dylans Don't drink Red Bull. The clarification of being a Jr "in college" is very different than in high school. Didn't think you were saying AA in college either. Dude...I'm one of the most calm people you'll ever know. A computer screen doesn't do typing any justice.

I'm not sure about your rant on JoJo either. Bottom line, we don't have Ballock and at this point, he's playing his recruiting fairly well as a young recruit. I see him as a Reed type of player at best. Let's just hope KU can land him in the front yard.

@drgnslayr I totally hear you. Yeah, look at the slug of a player Niang. Look at ISU. They have a few B12 tourney championships to show for Niang's time at ISU.

I'm tired of the talk. We've under achieved and haven't delivered a NC. I will die if we bring home a NC in 20 years...really? Billy Donovan brought two consecutive NC titles to Florida, BACK TO FREAKIN' BACK. It can be done. How many times has Coach K won a NC in 5 years? Do you feel my pain and point? Bill Self has had the talent, but he's gotten caught with his pants down too with losing players to the draft. We can go back and pinpoint about 2-3 NCs KU should've won. But something always happened. We got our azz kicked by some team with some uberly talented sick player/s. What's nuts, KU has had uber talent and sick players too. But we just weren't uberly talented enough to bring home 1-2 NCs. What's even more sick, we've gotten beaten by teams without uber talent...LOL...This when we've had uber talent...It's freakin' crazy. Maybe this is the year. Let's see...we won in 1988, 2008...we are due in 2018? Maybe if we stay true to history, Self might catch lightening in a bottle for another 10 yr NC. I guess every 10 yrs and seeing most of them is better than none at all.

@drgnslayr I think you might have a fair point with IQs. I also like the potential for Ballock to be a Stockton type player. Remember, BStar was a Stockton type player too. He was on the bench in 2008 with the NC win. Also, what did we do when he was actually playing? That glue didn't quite work when we needed it to work on the court.

@drgnslayr Everyone said that about BStar too, "glue guy." I think that term is overrated and overused. It's a polite way to say, he was a player we thought would be an impact player, but something happened. He played against equal or better talent. BStar never impressed me much, except he was great for Self's system. He was never the player I think many thought he would be either. But he was a Kansas product that many saw the same way. Also, Teahan was a Kansas product that was great for the system "glue guy," but just didn't quite turn out quite the way many wanted.

@dylans I hope you're right. I really hope he becomes a stud. I hope he's the next Kansas sensation. It's a bit of an unfair comparison, but let's look at Perry Ellis' resume. They are two different types of players, but let's forget about their positions and simply track progress.

This kid is already being touted all the bball adjectives we like to assign to a bball phenom. We all did the same thing with Connor Frankamp. Frankamp came out with a bit more hype than this kid. I remember Fraschilla sung CF's praises and everyone thought he would be the next KU phenom, but we all know where CF is right now and his development or ability is yet to be seen at WSU. He showed flashes of what could've been, but then when the going got tough, he bailed from KU...fine...no harm no foul.

Now, let's look at this kid compared to Ellis. He's no Perry Ellis. But Ellis dominated the state of Kansas in bball. Ellis is now a 4 yr player, which is good. Now, people are using his injury as an excuse that he was on Buddy Hield's heels for B12 POY. Really? Ellis was chasing Buddy Hield out of OU for B12 POY? Now, this is Ellis at the B12 level. He's done well, and will hopefully have his best year as a senior.

Now, you're already giving this kid a pass as a sophomore in high school. I suppose when he enters college and is adjusting to D1 play, you'll be the first to defend his play? We all want these players to stay 4 yrs, and rightfully so. But, my point is, unless they come in from day one and dominate right out of high school and continue in college, they are going to struggle. Ellis has made a pretty run, but he's a different player with a different skill set. I frankly don't think the Kansas bball talent pool do justice to these elite players. This is why we complain and bemoan the coastal kids, that go to the Dooks, UNCs, MSUs, St Johns, etc. We've had a pretty good recruiting year with Bragg and Diallo. Now, let's see if the team's experience, talent, and recruiting can bring a NC against some elite players. Remember, we may have a top team, but other teams have equal or greater as well.

Now, bring Ballock into the picture. You're saying he can hang with some of these top recruits. He can play every bit as good, when he leaves high school? Ok...when he leaves high school? High school and D1 college are two very very different levels of play. So, I hope you're right. I hope he makes the adjustment from high school to D1. I hope he's with KU. I hope he is the stud that you say he can, could, and will become. KU will need him if they plan to win another NC in the next 2-3 years. We've been saying this now for the last 2-3 years. It's time these studs step up to their hype and play at A big level. This is how you win NCs. I hate Dook, but ask Coach K how you win a NC in the NCAA? ELITE PLAYERS: Jones, Winslow, Okafor, and great supporting experienced returning group of guys...and I hate Dook BTW. But love 'em or hate 'em...they won a NC.

So sick of the pre-mature hype. This happens every so often. Until ISU can gain at least three years of consistent play, they are still who they have always been...pretty much a flash in the B12 pan. Miles Simon is the only one that gets it. He knows who rules the B12. But until ISU, Texas, Baylor, whomever, can win with some consistency, people need to shut the hell up and stop creating unnecessary drama. It's getting old, tired, and frankly a waste of my typing, time, and breath. Dang it...did it again...a waste...I don't know what it is about Hoiberg and ISU...they come on strong every year. They make a great conference run and about the time they seem to have a chance, they choke away their conference chances. Then, they make a strong showing in the tournament and settle for a 4 game conference championship. Then they go to the NCAA and really stumble. Hoiberg can never win a B12 conference title outright. His players are good, but not consistently B12 good, that strings a few conference championships together, sad.

I just watched tape of Ballock. I'm mixed at this point. I'm a little skeptical and hope to be totally wrong about this kid, but right now I'm leaning toward him being a CF 2.0 with a bit more size and a bit more athleticism.

The claim is he played well at the Jayhawk Invitational. I think the Stephen Curry endorsement and personal invite is really impressive. Curry is no slouch when it comes to talent. Curry has that mid-major sick sense, that could be revealing about a recruit. I'm going to error on the side of caution and keep my ears and eyes open with Ballock. I want to learn more about his development.

Most of you already have him signed. Maybe he's looking hard at CF's experience at KU? I'm afraid this is going to bite KU on the backside. We got Reed, BStar, Ellis, Teahan and CF (all Kansas products). I'm not too sure about Ballock. His tape doesn't woo me too much. I think he's skilled, talented, and athletic. BUT...let's see how he fairs against some stiff D1 competition. Right now, I'd say he's a big mid-major prospect and the type that could make KU and Self regret not recruiting him more intentionally. He's a freakin' Farokmanesh nightmare, Curry sensation, mid-major delight that with time could become a D1 One-Man destroyer. Or, simply, a mid-major player that thrives on the mid-major stage. I just thought if he continues at this level, and plays against some of the best D1 players, I'm just not sure how he'll fair at KU.

Also, if he's all KU...blah, blah, blah...why doesn't he commit already? I guess he's going to do exactly what Ingram did with his recruiting in Carolina. Which, I don't half way blame him. I guess it's ok. But, this kid is no Brandon Ingram. If he doesn't commit, Self needs to move on if he can find better talent. This kid is ranked in the 20s? If KU gets him, great, if not, oh well, there's a lot of other talent to pick from in the pool.

Tarik Black • May 05, 2015 01:15 AM

He is awesome and a great guy. I'm really pleased that he played at KU.

KU going World Wide • May 03, 2015 12:45 AM

I've noticed that too. It's a bit of a compliment to Self. I never thought much about it because I thought it was a recruiting coincidence. But, now that you mention it, it does seem interesting that Self recruits these recruits. Most of them are atypical American recruits. They are all untainted by the crooked machine of America. Unfortunately, many of these American reared recruits that Self has missed over the last few years are all bitten by some kind of negative recruiting bug.

These overseas kids are all fairly untainted and not taken in by the hype. They are great kids and do what is right. They all seem to follow sound advice and direction. So, I think it's great that Self is basically 100% on these "overseas" recruits back to Kaun. I can't think of anyone as far back as Kaun. You're right Self needs to keep tappin' and even develop every pipeline he can to overseas recruits. I'm not saying he's the only coach, but he seems to have a great coaching personality or work ethic. These kids overseas are not afraid to WORK and EARN playing time.

All time fav Withey pic ever.

Is KU on Jeff's list? Just wondering if he'll cut us at some point. I hear he will only sign with a B12 team in the NBA. Or is it an NBA team in the B12...I have no idea.

I prefer to call him the Cheickinator.

When you play in the Phog, you may be Cheicked.

If you find yourself on the wrong end of his dunk, you just got Cheickinated.

He's Shabby Cheick from Mali.
