"saw him get absolutely owned". Well, the TV announcers saw it and commented on it. Bell got (& earned) high praise. Charles Barkley at halftime thought the best plan for Frank Mason was to "involve his teammates more". Dont know what was said in the locker room, but I see 2nd half Frank and DG "feeding" Lucas, who of course was good at sealing off his man...but once he received the pass, the adventuresome journey down the tortured path of statistical no-return began. My lasting image of Lucas, as a senior, no less, is of sealing his man off perfectly, and going up for a 2ft airball off the backboard. For a 6'10 big who spent 100% of his time near the rim (due to zero face-up range), that's hard to do. But it tells the story of what Lucas was (as @HighEliteMajor perfectly alluded to), which segues precisely into what's been missing from KU's post presence for a few years now. Self tried his best with the hand he got dealt by fate (recruiting and injury to Doke, and fall thru floor by Bragg). And I cannot fault players like Frank Mason or Sherron, even if they have an off day in the Tourney--point being that they proved their greatness. I'd only wish they got the big prize for their own sake, then our sake second...

I'd like to compare our results in these preseason tuneups in other years as an indicator of success. We've had a few years with some relatively close matches in these games. One year against Washburn comes to mind. We didn't beat them by too much. But I've never connected the dots between exhibition results and season results.

Once upon a time these exhibitions were against better competition in the form of the Australian travelling All-Stars, or the RussianKGB All Stars. Those teams sometimes won these games actually and provided a much more realistic look at what our team was capable of.

While I don't think this was true last night, sometimes teams experiment in this games with lineups and different sets. Ethan Happ, a preseason AA from UW didn't attempt a shot in one of these games the other day. As the Badgers go to guy this year, he will be shooting plenty this season! Gard was trying to work newer players in to give them experience. I like to think that there was some of that happening last night.

New Kansas Poll About Rivalries • Nov 08, 2017 01:30 AM

Play Missouri every year. We would look forward to that game every year. It would probably be the biggest game on the schedule, the most anticipated. Of course if Missouri goes back to sucking then it might not be a great revival of the rivalry.

@BShark

Actually, to be defending champs, I would trade places. I don't want all of their mess, but sure. There's no pressure on them for a few years since they've now won TWO titles since we won our last.

@KUSTEVE The first appearance of the Duke whistle was that game. 26-14 foul count.

Is this current KU team special? • Nov 06, 2017 03:40 PM

@BShark I hated that Arizona game. Besides the 03 loss, it's my most painful KU loss. Other than a loss at Missouri, no shameful thing back then, we just steamrolled teams that year. Hard to quantify if they were the best KU team, 85-86 comes to mind too, but they were such a force it's hard to believe they didn't win.

Like 03 that game ended with us making a furious comeback and having a game tying 3 miss at the buzzer. Interesting that 08 would be the exact same memory except Mario of course made it.

I was in the car going on a spring break trip. Fortunately (or unfortunately I guess) the game was on some national radio, so I heard the whole ugly mess and was just muttering and grumbling the whole time!

Espn gets it wrong! • Nov 06, 2017 12:26 PM

During the last two seasons ESPN has ignored the fact that the White Sox won the world series in 2005. Last year it was a graphic showing Chicago champions since 1980 or something like that. Bears, Blackhawks and bulls logos were shown, but no Sox. This year it was showing that the Yankees are the only team to win the world series with 2 or less post season losses since 1998. The Sox only lost one game in the post season of 2005. Now calling us the Wildcats. Unbelievable.

Hmm.... You lost me bro. I didn't even notice this post until today.

Is this current KU team special? • Nov 05, 2017 03:04 AM

'03 wasn't special in my view because they should have won. They missed so many dang FT's. They were way better than Syracuse.

Bring back the 3rd place game! • Nov 04, 2017 01:15 PM

In our now former home of Louisiana they went to a modified best two of three playoff in the baseball tournament. There were two or three rounds out of the five playoff rounds that were 2 of 3.

Bring back the 3rd place game! • Nov 03, 2017 09:56 PM

@dylans Double elimination is good too. I think people could get behind something like that. But you'd probably have to limit the number of teams invited in that case. This means there's fewer low major/mid major types making the dance which means there's fewer Bradleys and Bucknells in our past.

College football is ruining their method of producing the truest champion in all of sports. Before the playoff they had a BCS committee pick two teams to play. Most years there was a little argument, but I don't recall any great miscarriage of justice in the two teams playing. There was usually little doubt as to who the true champion was. Now four teams have the chance which waters it down slightly. I really hope they don't go beyond four teams, although they probably will. Then we'll have whining from some 2 loss team as to why they deserved to be in the playoff. Kind of like a 14 loss team crying on a Sunday in March.

Bring back the 3rd place game! • Nov 03, 2017 04:32 PM

You all raise good points for and against. I just remember our 3rd place game that I referenced being a great 2OT game. Lots of energy in the building. I remember at the pep rally for the basketball team the following Monday that the coach reminded us only two teams finished the season with a win in the whole state of Illinois. At the time there were about 400 teams in class A in Illinois, so it was kind of a big deal to finish so highly and there was quite the incentive for teams to compete well.

Bring back the 3rd place game! • Nov 03, 2017 03:44 AM

Until 1981 the NCAA tournament played two games on the final Monday, a 3rd place game before the title tilt. It was a nice reward for the teams that made it that far to get to play another. I'd favor it.
NCAA, are you listening? You could televise it, and make more money. I'd watch. Would've been funny to see 38-1 Kentucky take the court a couple of years ago. They probably would have taken it out on whomever Duke beat that year.

I know it will never happen.

I enjoyed the benefit of losing fans going home and unloading their tickets at below market value by being able to see KU in the Superdome 5 years ago. A third place game probably means more fans stick around and that lower ticket price doesn't happen.

Teams that win 3rd place games get to finish a great season on a positive note. My freshman year of HS our great hoops team in Illinois lost in the semis and won the 3rd place game later that afternoon. It was a blast!

Bring it back NCAA!

I can kind of see the anti-wiggins statement. Embiid was a joy, Wiggins was kind of a bore. Maybe it's no fault of his own, different personalities and all, but Wiggins kind of protected the merchandise. Joel got himself hurt because he wasn't protecting the merchandise. I can't criticize either though as they were teenagers carrying the weight of Jayhawk nation on their considerable shoulders. I was so immature as a college freshman I would've wilted under that kind of pressure.

ASTROS WIN >>>ASTROS WIN • Nov 02, 2017 09:21 PM

@KUSTEVE Deal, but give us a couple of years when our own rebuilding project comes to bear fruit. We've got the top ranked farm system in the MLB right now. And the Sox will have significant amounts of money to spend on FA's next year as well. They'll become a very good team.

Badgers beat Missouri • Nov 02, 2017 04:10 AM

@jaybate-1.0 Writers are foolishly picking Badgers for 7th or 8th. They've finished no worse than 4th since Bo Ryan arrived in 2001. Most of those years it seems they've foolishly picked the Badgers for 7th or 8th.

Badgers beat Missouri • Nov 02, 2017 02:27 AM

I just found out the other day the Badgers and Tigers played a closed door scrimmage. This wasn't one of those exhibition deals. Instead it was just a scrimmage, but scores were kept and UW won 74-66.

I know it's not specifically a KU story, but it does have some connections to us.

UW is doing one of those charity exhibitions tonight against UNI. Full house in the Kohl Center where tickets were free but undoubtedly not generating the passion of the KU-Missouri game.

Hmmmm wondering • Oct 31, 2017 05:31 PM

Anything to beef up the schedule would be agreeable on my part. Wisconsin plays Marquette every year. That's a pretty good non-conference and very competitive series. ND, do they play Indiana or Purdue every year? Pretty sure they play Purdue each season. I forget. Those would be great instate rivalry. But our schedule, like so many teams goes to the path of least resistance.

I bring it up every year, but go look at KU"s schedule in the '80's. in 86 we beat Louisville TWICE. They were the national champs. They played Kentucky that season. They played Duke TWICE (once in the final four). They played NCState, a powerful team those years TWICE in NC (once in the sweet 16) They also played Arkansas and Washington and Memphis. All non conf games which prepared that team for greatness. The only thing they weren't prepared for were the refs in Dallas who fouled out our whole starting lineup basically while letting Duke do whatever they wanted on their way to a 4 point win.

There's been chatter about the ball not being right for this world series. Harder to grip because it's kind of slippery, just the way Gaylord Perry liked it.

An immodest proposal • Oct 31, 2017 02:24 AM

@jaybate-1-0 good stuff professor. You certainly do know my post was kind of in jest. I don't like to tinker with baseball rules, although unifying the DH, or better yet, getting rid of it in both leagues would make my heart glad. This newish commish makes me nervous because he has talked about crappy rules like banning defensive shifts and other bad ideas.

For 25 runs, 10 innings, and 14 pitchers used, I thought the game length was fine. If not for some bonehead plays, it would have ended it sooner. Humongous strike zone probably sped things up a bit.

I'm not ok with 5:17 to play 10 innings. It ended at 12:40 my time. It was in the 8th inning at 11:30 when I finally gave it up. Most famous game ever, game 6 of 1975 world series. That's the Carlton Fisk waving it fair game, was 12 innings long. Lasted 4 hours. Even by 1975 standards that was a long game. But it took them almost an hour and a half less to play 2 MORE innings.

In 1975 102 batters came to the plate, last night, 98 batted, only four different. Last night 29 batters either walked or struck out. In 1975 23 either walked or struck out. That's significant because those are time consuming at bats. 1975 12 pitchers used. Last night a horrendous 14 pitchers were used.

And a big difference, we all went to bed (I was in 5th grade, mom and dad let me stay up, although I never would have stayed up til 1:40 like it was in NJ where I was a kid) at a late, but not ridiculous hour.

First Game • Oct 30, 2017 01:13 AM

My annual rant. I don't live anywhere near Kansas and I can watch all of these games on ESPN3. How dumb is that? And we can't even blame our most hated sports network either. It's our own AD. It makes my blood boil to be honest knowing how difficult it is for KU fans to watch their teams games.

This game tonight is everything you should love about baseball.

dave armstrong voice WOW!

Wrong. A game requiring over 4 hours to complete isn't what we should love about baseball. The Dodgers used 9, that's the number after 8 for goodness sakes, 9 pitchers. The stupid manager takes his starter out after 4 innings! He'd given up one measly run. Then it's a long parade of pitching changes. I know it was an extra innings affair, but still, 9 innings took like 3:30 to play. Too freaking long.

@mayjay Greatest game two in history. I get irked when people make such proclamations! Have they been studying all the game two's in history? I don't remember many game twos except for my game two in 2005. That was a fantastic game with a grand slam, a blown save and a walk off homer by a guy Scott Podsednik who hadn't homered all year! Of course it was my Sox on the way to breaking their long drought.

I should say it was an entertaining game, I agree, but the Dodgers should be up 2 nil right now.

I'm Ready For Antlers Again! • Oct 24, 2017 04:32 PM

@drgnslayr It's interesting to see the copy cats out there. The NCAA by logic has to let other teams do a an exhibition fund raiser also. Not sure if we copied someone else, I don't think so, but a trend has started and maybe it will continue.

I will say this about the matchup. It was easily the most exciting preseason/practice/exhibition I've ever seen. If you could measure such a thing, it would probably rank as the greatest game ever in that category.

Yes, greatest and Jayhawks are once again being spoken of in the same breath.

Who you got in the World Series? • Oct 23, 2017 02:23 AM

I generally cheer against California teams. They've got great weather, great scenery, so they don't really need to have great teams, right? But I do kind of like this Dodger team. Could be that they beat the Cubs for me. They've got Redbeard and the amazing Kershaw. Puig seems to have rejuvenated his career. He's an amazing talent but I can do without the showboating which is his middle name.

The Astros of course have never won the thing so they're due. The city's had a difficult year with Harvey and they're a blast to watch. Altuve is probably the funnest player to watch in all of MLB these days. He just hits and hits and hits. Got amazing pop for a 5'5" guy. Be interesting to know how many other short guys hit for power like that?

The Astros are young and figure to be around for a while but the Dodgers are aging and probably don't have many chances left to win a trophy.

So I'm going with the Dodgers, although I think the Astros can win the thing.

Another rant against Fox and MLB • Oct 21, 2017 05:22 PM

So tonight KU and TCU play an all important football game on Fox. Not FSI their cable sports outlet, but on their premier national channel.

Meanwhile at the same time there's a minor sporting event relegated to FS1. It's only game 7 of the ALCS between Houston and NY.

Here's my gripe. Current commissioner Rob Mannfred and past commissioner Butt Selig put up with this crap. They should be telling FOX to show this game. They should be in Fox's ear wondering why they're afraid to show baseball games. The major network that televises their sport would rather show a game between TCU and awful KU than an epic game 7. I know football trounces MLB in ratings, but I also believe that baseball, and by baseball, I mean Selig and Manfred are to blame by just sticking their tail between their legs and kissing foxes butt.

My elderly parents still like to watch these games and tonight my mom will be calling me asking what channel the game is on because she can't find it. Heck, they might not even have it on their direct tv package. I'm expecting this phone call because I get it every year.

Last week it was the length of games, this week it's Fox and MLB's self defeating actions. Sigh....
