Pretty fun to watch the video of the scrimmage in PR. Lots of talented new talent!
@approxinfinity I like it, you could have two divisions, and call one the Great Lakes, and the other Great Plains. That would keep many of the traditional leagues together while adding new regular opponents to the mix occasionally.
@BShark Nice short shows most plays video here. When I first saw a picture of the gym they were playing in I thought it looked a lot like AFH on the inside.
Recorded the match and glad I saw the final while perusing the web while watching. Deleted the game before I read about the near winner for Portugal in stoppage time. Portugal played with way more passion and energy than the US I thought.
@kjayhawks I've never really had to listen to KU radio until just recent when I discovered I could listen to games on my phone. I enjoy Hanni a lot, but really have no one to compare him to.
@rockchalkjayhawk I'm sure he is. I like Bill Walton too. I think he adds a lot to a telecast.
@dylans That's an awesome story!
Conference of champions on its last legs.
Why don't we just go back to a legit big 10, a legit big 8, a legit PAC 10, the ACC what it was, the SW Conference which was very good, etc, etc.?
Awesome! Did Roy not want that to happen?
@rockchalkjayhawk Don't remember that dunk but I remember when they went up to Notre Dame.
Brannen Greenes dunk against KState "dick move"!!!
I loved the Baylor dunk but this one against Kentucky is my recent favorite.
Keith Langford every time he dunked was one of my favorites!
I was looking to see if there's any great Danny Manning dunks on youtube and I found this amazing sequence in his rookie year.
@dylans Did he stare you down?
My prediction:
Missouri State - W. 52-12
Illinois - Meeting a decent Defense. W. 24-17
@ Nevada They were really bad last year, but on the road for first time makes it a bit tougher. W 34-21
BYU - Welcome to the 12 Cougars. Enigmatic team last year beating Baylor and Stanford but losing to Liberty. I think we lose this L 28-27
@ UT - We've welcomed the new teams but still have the old teams? Odd. After the way they steamrolled us last year, I think this is another ugly loss. L 42-21
UCF - Not a real impressive resume last year. We must call them Central Florida because they want to be called UCF and get annoyed when called Central Florida, a real big reason to already dislike these dweebs from the swamp. W 52-14.
@OSU Don't feel good about this one except for the @ factor. We lose closely in a shootout L 42-39
OU - I'd love to send them out of the league with a loss and we just might be pumped enough to pull it off. W. KU21- OU 17.
@ISU - Let down week and the Clones make sure we don't get too big headed. L 35-21
TTU - W. Home game, sure, lets beat them again. W. 38-24
KSU - L. Ouch. Not talented enough yet, but it will be closer. L. 31-23
@ Cincy - I don't know why, but Fickell left, they'll not be as good so I think we can pull this one off. W. 21-17
7-5. I'd take it. Leipold probably would like better than that and he's skilled enough to pull it off.
This Panama Mexico match is awesome! Watching the spanish telecast which is way better even if I can't understand the announcers!
I've twice had boys ask for makeup work the last week of the semester because they were failing and needed this grade for their scholarships. One had signed with LSU football, the other Memphis. I looked at them with a look like please don't pick me up and throw me across the room, and said no. I don't know what ever happened to the kid going to LSU, but the Memphis kid had to go to JUCO, made it to Memphis and graduate and years later sent me a note thanking me for loving him enough to be tough with him. He's now a successful educator.
One of my students made me a celebrity....kind of. In Baton Rouge there's a business called the Hip Hop Ice Cream Shop. One of my students started it and polled people on facebook about snowball (snowcones) flavors. I said "Duh, coffee", because I had a rep (still do!) of drinking a lot of coffee, so she said she'd name a snowcone after me. I'm on the menu. If you look it up, my flavor is just above "Thug Passion". I can't wait to get back there some day and buy one!
@FarmerJayhawk Wow, that website, something else to waste precious summer hours on perusing!
@mayjay For what it's worth that web site has a very good reputation for being unbiased and statistically accurate.
@mayjay Notice I avoided the approximately conundrum and just wrote 26%.
10 of the 20 drunkest cities in the USA are in the state of Wisconsin. Strangely a lot of Badger staters brag about it. Green Bay leads the list where 26% of adults get drunk regularly. 50% of auto deaths in that city are from drunk drivers. This is why Huggins not only shouldn't get his job back but he needs help.

@FarmerJayhawk A little confused by your post. What are you doubting?
Big news around these parts. News broke yesterday of major problems with their baseball coach as well. He's a total A hole (LOL, I can't bring myself to use profane language!), has lost about half his team to transfers. Not any hazing type things. Just an explosive ego maniac who doesn't like to work hard relying on his assistant coaches and then reaming them out when things don't work out right. Players learn the signs and then he doesn't but argues with the guys when they 'miss a sign'. The AD is under the gun too as he hired the guy, but actually let basically two boosters find the guy. The previous AD lasted 9 days after it was discovered that he was named in a lawsuit with sexual harrassment of cheerleaders. They were expected to show up at fund raising soiree's and some of the big donors would fondle them and grab their behind, you know like our former president used to do.
Hard to believe that a premier academic institution could be undergoing all of this. The Badgers just flipped a three star from NU today who is also the 2nd ranked HWT wrestler in the country and he plans to wrestle after football is over. I'm guessing Leipold is watching the news from Evanston closely hoping to bag some smart kids who can play.
@jayballer67 Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
I don't know why any sane rational 69 year old man would choose to fight this. You've got all the money you'll ever need, but now you're going to try to get your job back which means recruiting 16 year olds, trying to keep 20 year olds, who you worked your tail off to get to come to WVU, from transferring to KU and other schools, have to try to win a conference with Bill Self in it, bad refs, games in Lubbock Texas at 8:30 at night and arriving back home at 3 AM and having to get up to prepare the team for a game 2 days later, etc. etc.
@nuleafjhawk Did sex have to be invented? Comes pretty naturally!! OK, this thread is now officially derailed.
@jayballer67 Mangino is family?
Mangino's first coaching job was while he was working for the Pennsylvania turnpike in Western PA. He coached at a small NAIA school Geneva College. My sister and her husband have both worked there since 1990, although I'm not sure they were ever accosted by Mark Mangino. Their town BTW is the home of Joe Namath and the Miller brothers of college hoops infamy. Right across the Beaver river is New Brighton, home of the Franconas of baseball fame. Pistol Pete and Mike Ditka played HS ball for Press Maravich right across the ohio River from both of those towns. Very productive area!
@jayballer67 Not sure if you understood me, but I've been under the impression Mangino was unfairly removed. After reading Texas Hawk, I've changed my mind. Pretty tough to defend him I think.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Interesting about Mangino. My impression up to this point was he was just a victim of modern day political correctness that can't handle a macho coach being physical with a player or two, but who truly loves that player at the same time. There was a HS coach in Madison who was highly successful, put numerous players in the NFL and slapped a guy on the helmet during a game which many fans and parents saw and forced the guy out. That's the type of thing that I though Mangino was bing forced out by.
Met Danny a couple of times while on campus. Closed the double van door on Scooter Barry's hand like on my 2nd day on campus. I had not clue who he was, but when someone said "I hope that's not your shooting hand". As I was sitting right next to him, I looked at him and guessed he was on the golf team! So I asked him and he told me who he was. Name still didn't mean anything to me until he told me who his dad was. Nice conversation on our way back to campus. He was not injured in any way!
Darnell Valentine was practicing shooting in Robinson during the offseason and I was looking for a game. He asked me if I could rebound for him while he shot. He had his best season shooting in the NBA after that encounter so I think I must have really helped him!
That was fun to watch. Never seen a ref wiped out in the first minute of a match before! Nil nil until the 88th minute, then 4 goals in the last 45 minutes. Amazing. I hate PKs to solve a match. It's so artificial. NHL model of removing skaters from the ice before they go to PK's might help. Even though it would have bit us last night, golden goal would eliminate the need for going to PK's on some occasions.

I love this country!!! Not because it’s perfect, but because we have the power to influence it and fix the imperfections. If you’re just complaining while not actually trying to impact the situation in a hands on way, you’re part of the problem you’ve identified. But that’s well within your constitutionally protected rights in this country! So have at it.
I'll cut you some slack because I know you don't know me and just assume us woke folks are doing nothing. Not going to list my feeble attempts at trying to make things better, but I could.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I'm not sure if I'd have favored Chris Christie but he's been making some noise, has some pull with centrists I'd guess. Tim Scott is an interesting name too.
Amazing how this day has changed in my mind. I used to debate whether July 4th or Christmas was my favorite holiday. The parades, fireworks, picnics, frequently we were at a lake house my parents have owned in Wisconsin, well it was just a great day. Church was always fun for the Sunday prior as it was a lot of God bless America type themes and I just basically had a week of fun and frivolity.
We have an amazing country. I still believe that but issues of justice have deeply troubled me in the past decade. My work in the inner city has also shaped me, but just learning more about the flawed framers of this democracy have me more and more wanting to just ignore this day.
When Barack Obama won I heard of an old friend weeping with joy. He had been nearly beaten to death in a Mississippi jail for being on a mission to register blacks to vote and continues today in his 90's to beat the drum for reconciliation.
But the next president taking advantage of still prevailing racial attitudes that were not agreeable with many of us seemed to inspire a revival of blatant displays of bigotry that had become largely hidden. Confederate flags in rural Wisconsin became common. An in your face my way or the highway approach to politics was taking over and we're here in 2023 as divided as we have been for a long time.
I put no flag up on my house this year. Just not feeling it. I'm a conservative but haven't voted for a republican since 2012 except for a few local races, wasting presidential votes on 3rd party candidates. I'm a voiceless conservative, finding some solace in people like Adam Kinziger, David French and others. I can't support the far right that are somehow giving Trump the lead for the Repub nomination, but finding little in common with people on the left either.
I hope I'm not irking many here, glad we have this forum to discuss other things as well. Enjoy your holiday!
When's the US play next? I've got nothing but time to kill in this recovery!
Mexico-Qatar is pretty compelling right now.
@Bosthawk Sounds amazing!
@bskeet Thanks for the information. My doc mentioned a pet scan if the PSA isn't basically zero. Glad it helped you. My gleason score was also 4+3. Very thankful for all of the medical advances that have benefitted us.
@bskeet Wow, thanks. I'm fortunate to have caught it before it'd spread. There's a small chance as they biopsy the now removed gland, but the doctor indicating not noticing anything unusual looking is certainly good news. I'm not sure what state 4 means as my tumor was given a term called a gleason score. Gleason 6 is the least severe, slowest growing, and when my PSA jumped slightly the Gleason score moved up to a 7 and the doc recommended removal.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Best KU game you've been to.:
@wissox good news! Glad it went well. I've been recouping and laying low for 3 weeks. Post op apt tmrw.
Hope you’re doing ok.
Wow, great stuff to read here. I am actually recovering from prostate cancer surgery this morning coming out of my fog or should I say PHOG I’m gonna be fine the doctor says.
@FarmerJayhawk Me too?
@BeddieKU23 How did you become a KU fan? I assume you don't live in Kansas?
@Gorilla72 Wow, I've heard of Stallworth and Robisch, but not the other guys. As a kid growing up in the 70's I knew nothing about KU basketball. I think my earliest NCAA basketball memory was Notre Dame ending UCLA's 88 game win streak. What were the crowds like back then? Did KU fans realize they had something special in AFH and as a blueblood status?
@BeddieKU23 said in Best KU game you've been to.:
Well since I've only been able to see one game live that's all I got. In that game though David McCormack had 28 points.
I'd have guessed you've been to many games as one of our most knowledgable fans!
@Jhawk69 I can just imagine the feeling at the end of that game.
@focojayhawk I never sat behind the bench except once, but by getting there about 2 hours early I could always sit the first row or two behind the basket on the KU bench end of the stadium. The court was right there. It kind of chagrins me (although it doesn't impact me) to see the students relegated to the ends of the courts these days. Not just KU of course doing this, but Illinois, Michigan and Duke are three I can think of that treat their students right and let many students sit on the sides instead of the ends.
@nuleafjhawk The part that wasn't true?
@Jhawk69 Was that the Buddy Hield game?
@RockkChalkk I don't remember the specific game, but it sounds like a memorable one!
Time to talk about something that might be interesting.
While the large majority of my games watching KU was in the mid 80's, I've been to a few others. I really don't remember any specific games from my time on campus. I don't remember any buzzer beater wins, or upset wins. I really don't have any great classics that I've seen. But I'm sure many of you do.
So I have to just give a any game I was at in AFH from 85-88 third place.
My second would have to be the NC game in 2012. A loss obviously, but a game of that magnitude was special to be at. Maybe Selfs best coaching job was that season. We actually made Cal nervous. 2008 had to be in the back of his mind as we cut their lead down to 5 in the last two minutes.
Miami game a season ago was my best game. Was a combo of important game, memorable comeback, totally dominating 2nd half, hearing Illinois fan scream "F...You Bill Self" from the 3rd row below the ceiling , to watching the team hoist the trophy.
What are yours? More than one is acceptible.
