@drgnslayr

Funny thing is I don't appreciate cheese all that much!

As for the game, it reflected the Badgers season. A team with 5 or 6 almost equal parts was on display. Others picked up the slack and we nearly defeated Kentucky with Frank scoring 8 points.

As for the fouls, I didn't like the first half especially. We lost Jackson almost immediately to one iffy call, and the same with our 6th man Hayes. Koenig picked up the slack though for Jackson, you can see why Self recruited him.

I was especially fuming over a strip that Brust had later in the game. The ref who called it was screened from the action and although from his view may have thought Brust fouled him, he didn't. The thing is with fouls, even though there were some bad calls, is that UW shot more FTs than Kentucky, the three Jackson shot were kind of a gift I thought, and, every time Bo really rode the refs they seemed to respond with some makeup calls.

Even though Jackson has made some career buzzer beaters, I sure would have liked to see him try to find someone in that last minute. He's usually not that reliable of a scorer.

Oh, and why didn't Gasser guard Harrison more closely on the tying three? Oh well!

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 06, 2014 10:52 PM

Interesting discussion. HEM's question reflects the national perception of KU basketball.

What makes the NCAA tournament so fascinating is that it so often does not render the best team in the country as its' champion. When UConn won in 11 they were 9-9 in their league, they were not the best team in the country. They only had to defeat Butler to win the NC. Do you think Butler was the 2nd best team in the country? I don't.

In an NBA style playoff, KU wins national championships probably in 1997, 2002, 2003 and maybe several others.

But the tournament is set up for favorable matchups, and by favorable, I mean favorable to teams that will draw the best ratings. UConn doesn't leave the state of NY this year to get to Dallas. Kentucky, with their ballyhooed 8th seeded team gets to play up the road in St. Louis, and then in Indianapolis. Maybe without a lot of home cooking neither of those teams even makes it out of the regional rounds. Now KU has received some favorable draws too threw the years to be sure, so it's not a major reason.

So to answer the question, Red and Blue pills combined make purple so I will take purple, a little of both!

@globaljaybird

It was really interesting to watch the players reaction to winning the other day. The one senior Ben Brust of course had his last chance to play in the final four. He's been a four year contributer to the team. But all he talked about was how happy he was for Bo Ryan. He wouldn't have been at all blamed had he talked about how happy he was for himself, but he didn't. These kids really love their coach and it shows in a lot of ways.

Basic Bucky Badger • Apr 05, 2014 01:36 PM

@drgnslayr @brooksmd @Crimsonorblue22 @Jaybate and all my friends who have been supporting my tryst with the Badgers.

Full disclaimer: I have watched college hoops since the mid 70's. I never played basketball in any sort of an organized way, except I attended this small Bible college in Dubuque and was on the team, and actually scored two points! Nonetheless I really don't know anything about basketball in a technical coaching analytical way. When you talk about someone playing the four or the two, I really have never learned what exactly those numbers mean. So take this for what it's worth. I'm not coach @HighEliteMajor or @icthehawkfan316 or @ralster. I'm just a fan who generally watches the ball and not the schemes.

If you want to watch the game, it's on TBS, NOT CBS, but they are managing to show some college all star game on CBS today. If you want to watch the game without the fawning over Kentucky watch it on TRUtv for the Wisconsin slanted coverage. Wayne Larivee is a great play by play man who used to do the Bears but broke my heart and went to the Packers. (my sporting life is complicated!)

It's WIsconsin, not WEsconsin as Scott Drew keeps saying on ESPNU right now. Scott still has the deer in the headlights look he had when Bucky thrashed him last week.

When you buy clothes at Kohl's you are helping build the Kohl Center where the Badgers play and you are supporting America's wealthiest Senator, Herb Kohl, the owner of the chain.

Now for the team.

They will speed it up more than people realize. It's been admittedly painful the last few seasons watching them grind it out. But, it's well publicized that they aren't turning it over, leading the nation in that category.

Their interior D has been a weakness, relatively, this year. But, they appear to me to be willing to give up some inside points to defend the three ball.

The footwork of their forwards has always been something to watch. It must be a coaching point of Bo Ryan. From Mike Wilkinson to Jarred Bergren to the present with Frank Kaminsky they draw the ire of opposing fans who think they travel. This skill creates a lot of easy little layins.

Because of this footwork they get fouled a lot. They shoot more FTS than the other team attempts, and they're pretty good shooting FTs, although they're slumping a bit in the tourney. Gasser led the Big1G in FT shooting, Brust was near the top, Frank was very good as was PG Jackson. Sam Decker and Nigel Hayes are relatively weak FT shooters.

The players:
Frank Kaminsky has evolved from a 6'2" guard as a junior in HS in the Chicago suburbs into a 7' small forward. He blocks shots, makes 40% of his threes and as you saw against Arizona, has carried the team at times.

Sam Decker. Only a sophomore he is an athletic forward who will likely be drafted when he comes out. He's kind of a slasher, 3 ball slump this year, shut down Aaron Gordon of AZ.

They play a three guard lineup who are all undersized.
Traevon Jackson, you may remember his dad Jimmy a star at Ohio State 2 decades ago. Although he doesn't score a lot normally, if a buzzer beating set is being played he will be the one to take the shot. He has made 5 in the last two seasons. Has a little bit of Nadir in him sometimes, leaves you shaking your head.

Ben Brust. Amazing player. Never met a three he didn't like. Set off a 'controversy' last year on the fouling when up by three against Michigan. He made a half court shot to tie them and the Badgers beat Michigan (as they almost always do). At 6'1" he has averaged nearly 5 rebounds a game the last two seasons! Has a nose for the ball. Not sure that will happen with Kentucky today and their length, especially now that Stein is playing.

Josh Gasser (pronounced gahser). Terrific defender and decision maker. Very heady player. Back door cuts, superb three shooting, he led the league, and all league defensive player. First freshman since Magic Johnson in the Big 10 to have a triple double.

Nigel Hayes. 6th man of the year in the Big1G. He has developed the footwork already. Has a very nice mid range jumper. Then the next time will drive to the hoop and finish and get fouled, but then will miss the FT!

There's a couple of other developing weapons. One was recruited by KU, Bronson Koenig who will fill Brust's role next year. The Badgers will lose no one this year except for the growing possibility of Frank leaving. Koenig is a nice three shooter, (aren't they all?) but hasn't become reliable enough to garner major minutes. Duje Dukan is the son of a Bulls executive from the glory days so he grew up hanging around the locker room with the superstars. He makes some plays as well.

They don't really go much deeper than 8 players, a relative weakness of the team.

I tried to find an update on this stat, but a year ago I remember hearing that they don't give up leads in the last five minutes. It was something like once in 50 some games with a lead in the last five had his team then gone on and lost. Generally, they close games well with their excellent ball control and FT shooting.

A weakness that nearly cost them against Arizona. This team for years has struggled to inbound the ball (especially under their own basket). They have developed a strategy of tossing the inbounds pass all the way to the back court and one of the guards chases it down.

The coach. The accolades are numerous. He won four titles in the 90's at UW Platteville. Has kept the Badgers in the top four of the Big1G all thirteen years on campus which is modestly impressive, but no other team can say that currently. He has the best winning percentage for any coach in the league with at least 10 years. Nice guy, people like to make fun of his looks, just like we did with Frank Martin, but the more I read about him, the more I think he is just a good guy.

Watch if Bo feels the calls aren't going his way. In both the Arizona game and the Oregon game the first half calls were one sided and Bo got T-d up. And as often happens, the team was fired up and came back.

Which brings up the 2nd half. UW has been very good in the 2nd half lately. They trailed American, Oregon and Arizona in the first half by 8 or more points. Both American and Oregon were outscored by 20 or more in the 2nd half and Arizona by 4.

I have hope for today, but not overconfidence. Kentucky struggled to beat Michigan. The Badgers lost to Michigan at home during the one slump they've had, but a few weeks later showed they were over their slump by thrashing Michigan at their place, we had a 25 point lead before letting them back into it before closing with a nice run. If that tells us anything I'm not sure but the Badgers will most certainly not get run out of the cavernous dome today by Kentucky. And most of America will rejoice because most of America is really tired of what Kentucky is doing to college basketball.

It remains tied with the White Sox winning the World Series as the best day in my sporting life. I chose to go to KU just at the right time, not even knowing KU had a rich basketball history. Three years after enrolling I had watched us get robbed out of the chance to play for the championship in 1986 and two years later a championship.

I have lived off that memory through many KU disappointments. When we have lost in the tourney every year since except once, I remind myself I was fortunate to be a senior at KU when we won it all.

I won't discuss the game much. It was a fabulous game. I still talk to random fans not affiliated with KU and they remember the 50-50 halftime score. They ask what happened to Danny. I tell them he was an NBA all star, probably destined for the HOF until his knees prevented it.

I really don't know where the term Danny and the Miracles came from. It wasn't, to my recollection used of the team at that point. I do remember at Late Night that year that a group of players including Danny sang "Kansas City Here I Come" rather prophetically.

Walking on campus at 1 or 2 AM if you were clueless of what had happened you would have thought there was another 60's riot protesting Vietnam or something. The place was a mess! I saw someone on top of a statue (which building I don't remember) over close to the Union. It was pure unbridled passion for KU basketball.

Billy Tubbs interviewed later said he knew that OU was the better team. He was a jerk in victory and a jerk in defeat and he's the reason I still lump OU in with misery. (By the way a miseryable player was arrested TWICE yesterday).

I was in the line for championship T-Shirts, which I still have by the way, but they've shrunk so I don't wear them, when I struck up a conversation with a KU fan from Oklahoma. He'd driven up from Norman where he lived. He told me he'd bought a bunch of "OU National Champions" t's for a buck or two and gave them to his friends there who were OU fans! Being a sports fan is fun, isn't it?

So what do you remember? We've go to hold ourselves together til next year now when our eternal optimism will have us anticipating title #11 and championship #4.

Dragon my requested preview of the Badgers is forthcoming. For now here's why everyone should cheer for Bucky on Saturday:

  1. My four children were born in Wisconsin

  2. The floors for most Final Fours is made in a little plant just down the road from our old house and a good friend purchases the wood that goes into those floors.

  3. Scandal free

  4. UW Whitewater won D-3 championships in football and basketball this year. It's a breeding ground for champs!

  5. I still love the Jayhawks more! I graduated from KU and don't spend hours on UWbuckets.com. I'm just an adulterer in the basketball sense who enjoys having a second basketball option!

I know as I was watching the Badgers Saturday that a lot of people were complaining about the inability to watch the game because it was on cable. I don't understand the decisionmaking.

I follow hockey some and was screaming last summer at the TV when I realized I wouldn't be able to see the Blackhawks on one of the Stanley Cup games because it was on some other cable channel. It makes no sense.

I am excited to get to hear Wayne Larivee call the game Saturday however. I don't want to hear about Kentucky ad nauseum, and now I won't have to!

SMU NIT Larry Brown. • Apr 02, 2014 02:48 PM

@ParisHawk

I never heard that. Why did he have a whistle around his neck?

Of course I'm reading a lot of the final four right now with my Badger interest and I'm learning that the nation really is disgusted by Kentucky. These are the fans who live outside of their realm of influence and just see them as a bunch of kids with no intention of attending classes beyond what's required and running to the league the first chance they get.

I am hopeful that the college coaches and AD's will rise up and force some changes for the benefit of their game. Because what they are doing is no good for the game. We really learned the hard way this year.

Imagine all of this OAD crap didn't exist. Can you imagine our team in two years? Wigs, Selden, Joel, Perry, Lucas, Mickelson, Cliff, Connor, Mason and a few others with two plus years of coach Self's training in the Jayhawk way? That's what is being taken from us. The glory years of college hoops from the mid 70's into the '90s when upperclassmen laden teams became household names, the games written down into sports lore. Lousville-Houston, Ralph Sampson and Virginia banging against UNC and Michael, Sam, James. GTown (I hated them like I hate Kentucky now) with their menacing college version of the Pistons Bad Boys. Magic-Larry never would have happened in 2013. Even Michigan's Fab 5, despite the cheating, were something to behold, so much talent on one team, but they couldn't win because they were going against more talented experienced teams.

I know, I'm showing my age, just as @MoonwalkMafia showed his age. The old days were always better right? What will the old guys say about this era regarding college basketball? I'm not sure they'll get all nostalgic will they?

Of course if sane college hoops takes precedence this year, then a very experienced Florida, or Wisconsin, or even UConn will win it, following a win last year by an experienced team in Louisville, who PTL, returned this year. So maybe Kentucky is the anomaly and experienced teams (who lack OAD's) will continue to win this thing.

SMU NIT Larry Brown. • Apr 02, 2014 02:22 PM

My favorite Larry Brown moments:

  1. Winning it all.

  2. Telling his players to play under control against OU and Danny telling the guys at the tip that they were going to run with OU. 50-50, 20 minutes of exhilerating basketball!

  3. A game against who knows in AFH. From my seat behind the north goal, I watch the ref make a disagreeable call. The ball rolls to Larry who picks it up and rolls it to the ref but 'misses' the target and the ball rolls all the way to the south goal. Still can't believe the ref didn't T him up!

  4. When he posed for a picture during the pregame shootaround. I wish I could figure out how to get the snapshot of it onto here.

  5. Motioning to the crowd to knock off the airball chant after some poor ISU lad missed badly and we were merciless. We were probably winning by 20 or 30 by that point in the game.

  6. Getting T-d up during the FF run in 86. The clock didn't run for 15 seconds or so, and there was some confusion. We were losing to MSU (I think) by quite a few points with just a couple of minutes left. Somehow the T helped us and we shocked Scott Skiles, Jud Heathcote and the Spartans.

@bskeet

Those photos demonstrate just how physical the sport is. It'd be interesting to know if some of those resulted in fouls. For example, the pic of him in the Stanford game shows Wigs surrounded by 4 Cardinals and every one of them has their hands and arms entangled with his.

Interesting and disturbing read Dragon. My hope is that the NBA will impose some sort of rule that allows HS kids to opt into the draft, but if they don't they have to commit to a college for 2-3 years at least.

As for your son, I have two boys and when they were young I dreamed of them growing into good baseball players. I love baseball more than college hoops if that's possible. However, life has changed for youth sports. It's all about specialization. I see kindergartners coming to the park with bat bags for goodness sakes. I see their coach acting as if they're Tony Larussa. My sons tried playing and both hated it. The coaches, the players who were made to think they were special, everything. And I didn't care they didn't like it either.

I am disgusted with much about sports these days. When I see kids at the park on a school night playing baseball at 8:30 or 9:00 and they're 2nd or 3rd graders it looks like somethings wrong. To be 'good enough' to play for the high school team, you've got to play on all sort of out of season teams. This isn't just baseball, but soccer, basketball, etc.

I hope some order comes back into our beloved college game. I know the old days of a Danny Manning playing four years of college ball are long gone, but it's sad in a way.

I guess I can't blame him for playing the system like he did. Without the one year rule, I'm sure he'd be a pro right now hitting the wall. But I have such disdain for this OAD business. It feels like our program is being used by someone who really didn't care that much if his presence didn't lead to a championship, or even a much better year than we had. I'm sorry, but I just can't get too many warm fuzzy feelings over this kid.

Is it possible that the poor ending could have a negative effect on recruiting? Kentucky obviously wasn't hurt by last years flameout. But we're not Kentucky. Silly Stats Scrutinizing Self • Mar 31, 2014 05:07 PM

Another way to think about this is how many champions has each coach lost to? Roy lost to 7 national champions. In addition he lost to 1 national runners up I think this is an important stat. Self has lost to 1 champion and 3 runners up.

Keep in mind he is only one year removed from high school, and certainly I might have said something questionable at that time.

By the way, Wisconsin hasn't given up a fastbreak point in two and a half games. Wisconsin isn't athletic to hear commenters all over the country. Interestingly, amazingly UW hasn't given up a fastbreak point since the first half of the Oregon (round of 32) game. They're really two pretty similar teams with Florida having an edge in the guard play slightly and UW having an edge in the front line play slightly. You're amazing JB! I was just joking on your post the other day, but.. I appreciate it. Go Badgers! Beat Arizona!

Tournament Success Is The Only Success • Mar 29, 2014 06:59 PM

@KUSTEVE

Got to defend my Badgers a little bit! Bo Ryan has coached UW 13 years and made 6 sweet 16's including three of the last four. He made an elite 8 in 2005 and played UNC incredibly tough in that game. You have bought the perception of the Badgers, and for the life of me I don't know where this comes from, that UW is an early out in the tourney. Bo's lost two first round tourney games and only one would be considered an upset, so in that regard, he's even up on Self!

@HEM

I am in agreement with you. I don't go on Facebook and brag about KU winning the Big 12 every year, although it's better than not winning it. We play in a league without an elite challenger, although challenges have come from many different teams through the years. But I do whoop it up for the Alma Mater when we make a final four or win it. It still rankles me that a team like UConn has as many titles as KU and they barely played college ball until the 70's. Heck if the Badgers win this thing, stop laughing, it could happen, they will be one championship behind KU as the Badgers took home the 1941 title!

But KU is close to putting their name up there with the all time best in terms of championships. A back to back run and suddenly we're past Duke, and just looking up at Kentucky and UCLA, and Indiana I think. This can be done. I'm already excited about seeing a more experienced KU team on the floor next year and looking forward to what that will bring.

Were you actually around when KU lost the 57 triple OT game? If so, wow! If not why that game? To me it's just a game in the 'ancient' annuls of the sport that doesn't come close to resembling the modern game and March Madness.

Extreme downer #1 for me was in 97. Best KU team I've seen. 03 is next, 2nd best KU team I've seen. Then tying for the bronze medal is all of the disappointments, Duke in '86, which was my first year on campus, we'd beat Louisville twice that season and then were robbed by the officiating crew. Other disappointments were UTEP, Rhode Island, UNI, Bucknell, Bradley and lastly VCU. Been a lot of them. But two championships is the envy of about 99% of the other NCAA teams out there so in that perspective, it's not all bad!

Missed shot, offensive rebound, crazy wild shot, offensive rebound, crazy wild pass to turnover to immediate turnover to another crazy wild shot (all of these are misses by the way) to offensive rebound to crazy wild shot and defensive rebound,

Zero poise in a pressure packed situation. I was screaming to coach to use a TO to calm everyone down. Mostly it was a lack of experience that led to this. How many times on @JesseNewell's live blog did we write 'wow, that was a dumb pass'? Must have set a live blog record!

Playing with a bunch of freshmen is a crapshoot. Look at Calipari! NC one year with freshmen, NIT OAD the next, to 8th seed (maybe one of the worst seedings of seeding history) and still dancing.

@MoonwalkMafia

Wow, really? A lot of major media outlets are going to be eating crow if what you say is true.

I don't tweet, or twit or whatever, I assume that's a tweet from Joel?

How desperate are we for a PG exactly? • Mar 27, 2014 02:02 PM

Here's how desperate we are for a point guard.

National rank for turnovers 257.

National rank for turnover margin 299.

I don't know how these compare to past years, but I'm sure it wasn't even close to these sad numbers.

I could keep looking for these stats, but you have to scroll through so many pages to find our name, you get the idea.

NBC reporting this. I'm deflated, bummed, saddened, you get the idea.

Boo

I was going to write something witty and funny but now I'm just deflated. I really don't care that much that Wiggins is gone, but I was looking forward to seeing Joel in the Crimson and Blue for another season. It's been a long time since I enjoyed watching a KU player as much as him, and that's saying a lot!

I sincerely hope that 20 years from now we're talking about his prospects for the Hall of Fame. I wouldn't be surprised.

@HighEliteMajor

Since you have the best reputation (based on stars per post) on these boards how can you say with great confidence that Embiid is gone?

Selden: Pop, Hop and Trey • Mar 27, 2014 12:49 AM

@Lulufulu85

Selden has a beautiful jump shot I've always thought. It reminded me of BMacs. I absolutely believe he can become that reliable outside scorer/slasher that BMac was.

As far as HS teams playing 20 games. I don't how many places that's true. Here in Louisiana some teams play ridiculous schedules with up to 50 games! Wisconsin only had 20 allowed though.

@icthawkfan316

Since we compared Mason to Collins a lot this year here's the freshmen stats.

Sherron 22 min. 9.3 pts 3.5 ast. 40% on threes 76% FTs

Mason 16 min. 5.5 pts 2.0 ast. 33% on threes 66% FTs

I forgot to mention as some of you have that we have Mickelson. Now, he'll be a junior, one year of playing experience, but more than a year of learning the self system. He's going to be an elder on this team and if he has the skills to go with it, which we hope he does, may pay big dividends on this team.

Who? • Mar 26, 2014 06:04 PM

Good question Ryman.

Should Florida win, and it's a distinct possibility I probably don't need to add, Billy Donovan would have three titles since 06 which would equal KU's total since 1952. I would take Billy Donovan. I'm not anti-Bill Self at all. I think he's amazing and will win again some day. As everyone is pointing out, this has not been a typical Bill Self team.

Should we get back to our staples of experienced players, tough D, serviceable offense we will get back to final fours and winning championships again.

Is It For Us Or For Them? • Mar 25, 2014 08:26 PM

@drgnslayr

I've been careful here not to say it's no big deal because I've got another team in the tourney. I feel guilty a little for being so much into two teams, but it is just sports after all. I think we match up well with Baylor and while not knowing too much about Arizona, I do believe we can take them down as well. A defeat of Arizona was part of our 2000 final four run, of course that means nothing now, but it's a good omen, if such things are possible.

For two decades I'd say to my wife after KU lost to end the season short of a title that it was OK, because they can't take the 1988 title from me, from the memories of being on campus that season, of celebrating wildly on campus til two or three in the morning.

I still have that great memory. 08 of course was great, winning a game with one of history's great shots in our favor. No one has won more than one since that year. We're ok, more titles will come.
