Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:57 PM

@brooksmd Yep, Cheick didn't enter until 8 minute mark. But considering we were winning 24-4 it was hard to sub.

I don't know what Hield is doing, but Wayne has got to be in the running for POY in the league.

Anyone else getting the game on CBS website, or in Kansas on TV?

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:11 PM

Why is CBS showing two crappy teams like this nationally anyways?

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:10 PM

I bet Rick Barnes is wondering how he ended up in this gawd awful league.

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:08 PM

@wissoxfan83 I remember this last year. CBS sports isn't smart enough to realize that it's still showing UT-Aub on their main page.

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:07 PM

No game being shown on CBS sports as far as I can see. This ends quickly it looks like.

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 09:00 PM

Watching SEC basketball reminds me of how bad this league is. Today they have a league preview in our Baton Rouge paper. Texas AM is picked 2nd. I know they're ranked, but barely. Not much there. Of course all they care for is football.

Chatting KU Baylor hoops here • Jan 02, 2016 08:54 PM

@wissoxfan83 I might be stuck watching end of Auburn Tennessee here before CBS will switch to KU game. Bruce Pearl against his old team.

This feels like opening day.

Todays game • Jan 02, 2016 04:05 PM

@jayballer54 We're usually one of the best for FG % defense, but without a large defensive presence inside the paint, we suffer a bit on that stat.

Some facts for you to mull over & absorb • Jan 02, 2016 04:03 PM

@jayballer54 When we make the tourney this year we will tie UNC for the longest streak of going to the dance, and then break the record next year!

It's 2016 • Jan 02, 2016 04:01 PM

@Lulufulu Now if we could figure out how to make it happen at the mid term elections too, then we'd be sitting pretty!

It's 2016 • Jan 02, 2016 02:36 PM

@JRyman I think you're onto something!

It's 2016 • Jan 02, 2016 05:02 AM

@jaybate-1.0 If you think about it, UConn's championships were cyclical too. They didn't repeat anything, but '99, '04, '11, '14 means they reloaded, and took senior laden teams to the ring. I think we've got something like that going on as well.

@drgnslayr It's freeing up some time, because last year I HAD to watch, and this year it hasn't been a priority.

@drgnslayr Well I felt a little funny typing what I did because it's not like I hope we don't win the league each year! And you're right about the day we don't win it, it will feel very strange, but being a Badger fan this year is giving me some experience in feeling bad about a team I love!

WHAT DOES CONFERENCE PLAY MEAN TO YOU? • Jan 01, 2016 11:49 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 That picture of AFH is a work of art that deserves to hang in the Louvre.

I"ve never been overwhelmed by our streak. I've always wanted national titles more and have a sort of ho hum attitude towards winning the league.

Then I read this: "3 times KU has kept the streak alive starting the season with 5 new starters". Wow! Pick my jaw up off the floor type of wow.

This article is well written, extolling the virtues of KU basketball.

WHAT DOES CONFERENCE PLAY MEAN TO YOU? • Jan 01, 2016 05:18 PM

Conference play is a sort of 2nd season. Lots of ball has been played, but a lot of it relatively meaningless.

Even the MSU loss, looks better and better as time goes on, yet at the time some here were ready to climb the Campanille and commit Jayhawk Hari Kari.

But these games, each one threaten the end of the streak, take on significance.

We have the target on our back.

ESPN makes sure our Big Monday appearances are on the road, although it's split evenly this year. Upsets of the elite programs make good ratings.

I thoroughly enjoy conference play. Bring it on!

It's 2016 • Jan 01, 2016 03:53 PM

Since I don't have an X's and O's reason for why KU will win it all this year, there's this.

1940 Election year, lost championship game.

1952 Election year, won Championship

1988 Election year, won championship

2008 Election year, won championship

2012 Election year, lost championship

2016 Election year.......

Throw in 2004, also an election year in which we lost an elite 8 game we should have won, well, I know I'm on to something with this election year stuff.

But I also believe that if Cheick and Bragg stay around, as does Wayne, we are really primed for a spectacular 2016-17 season. So I'll take that too!

I've sometimes wondered if a very successful season at KU means we lose a bunch of older players because they graduate means we must reload. Self's highly demanding system and preference for older players means we must go 3-4 years, ie, an election cycle, before we are in position to win another title.

So here's to our next national title. With the prospects for November election wise, a championship will be the highlight of the year!

little update on Bolden • Jan 01, 2016 03:46 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 @FarSideHawk

Indeed, I thought it was he (or she?), but didn't want to guess. He hasn't posted in more than a month.

Can you explain PER?

little update on Bolden • Dec 31, 2015 11:30 PM

Thanks @jayballer54. You've become on of our go to guy on recruiting it seems. We're missing the input of someone else, and I'm sorry, but the name escapes me, who used to give us a lot of recruiting information, really on top of it.

If you were KU MBB coach... • Dec 31, 2015 11:25 PM

@pa_grape Is PA Pennsylvania? I have lots of family in the Pittsburgh area.

If you were KU MBB coach... • Dec 31, 2015 06:57 PM

@Hawk8086 True, obviously, I guess I meant that if you look at three championships that he won there, besides Isiah, there's no household names on any of those teams. He did have NBA players no doubt. I don't know if anyone has ever won a NCAA championship without NBA talent.

If you were KU MBB coach... • Dec 31, 2015 06:16 PM

@brooksmd And one of us will show up and talk about White Sox games too! It's ok, I talk to myself a lot!

@curmudgeonjhwk Geography teacher, so it made sense, plus it happened in New Orleans!

If you were KU MBB coach... • Dec 31, 2015 05:48 PM

@nuleafjhawk @drgnslayr I had a funny experience a few years ago. I was new to South Louisiana and the Bulls were coming to town, so I asked my students if they new if it was easy to get tickets to Hornets games. One of them said his uncle is one of their coaches. I asked rather incredulously who it was, and he said Keith Smart. I was amazed that this inner city kid was Keith Smarts nephew. I asked him if he ever talked to his uncle about the shot in 1987 and the kid had no clue! He didn't know his uncle had made one of the NCAA's most famous shots!

If you were KU MBB coach... • Dec 31, 2015 04:25 PM

@pa_grape Good first post!

If I were the coach....

I would hire KUBucketeers to be my staff. In fact I'd have them monitor KUBuckets during the game to get insights.

I wouldn't be driving a Honda with 170,000 miles on it.

I'd schedule Missouri

I'd thank Bruce Weber for taking the job at Kstate

I'd offer to help coach the football team

I'd recruit 6'11" Nick Rakocevic from Illinois. He's a baller. Saw him in person last week.

I'd upgrade to High Def, and maybe get a bigger TV than my 32" screen.

I'd free the three to the tune of about 30 a game with the understanding of the effective 3 pt. % stat.

I'd shoot hoops at midnight on the AFHS floor by myself, or a few close friends.

I'd say screw Adidas' hideous NCAA tournament unis they break out every year.

I'd move all of the student seating to the sections closest to the floor. Surround the court with students instead of the donors who are paying my salary. This would create an unbeatable home court advantage.

I'd recruit Eastern Europe more.

I'd recruit no more than 1 OAD and focus on the 10-30 ranked kids who are more likely to stick around Lawrence.

I'd ask Bobby Knight how he won three rings with only 1 player who's made it big.

I'd ask Izzo how to get to the final weekend consistently as he has.

I'd hire Nick and Kirk as soon as they retire.

I'd sneak into the rules of basketball wing of AFH and adopt NCAA baseball rules for players which makes players three year players at least if they decide to play college ball.

I wouldn't be answering this question!!

Interesting you bring this up tonight. My view has been pretty trusting in the coach, he must know what he is doing, that sort of thing. But sure, I've wondered why Cliff last year, and Cheick especially this year aren't playing more.

Which brings up an article I saw at CBS sports. The guy ranks the college players in terms of draftability. There are way more players he rates than will get drafted. 15o in all. No Frank Mason. No Devonte Graham. No Carlton Bragg. But a whole slew of guys who might fit your heading, the most talented, but not the best players. Now most of them I don't know, and don't give a hoot about, but.....

FRANK MASON IS NOT ONE OF THE TOP 150 PLAYERS IN THE COUNTRY? Are you kidding me? Svi's name is on the list, and there's not one person in all of college basketball who would say Svi is a better player than Frank. There's role players from LSU who I've seen in person on the list who I wouldn't give a dime to see play over Frank.

Here's the link to the rankings of players if you're interested. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25432001/nba-draft-big-board-ben-simmons-at-top-skal-labissiere-no-6 ↗

BAYLOR BEARS - SATURDAY 3 P.M. CBS • Dec 30, 2015 11:40 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 ? Jones AT&T stadium?

2016 Resolutions • Dec 30, 2015 11:38 PM

I resolve to persuade my senior in HS daughter to attend KU where she's already been accepted. She is ruling it out on the basis that she knows no one there and she likes some other schools better. So I ask, how many times will you have a chance to be on ESPN/CBS at those other DIII schools? NEVER! Where else can you have a basketball team be #1 and a football team be #128?
What other school has a chant that is as haunting, and memorable and beautiful and inspirational as the Rock Chalk chant? My goodness, I'm getting more and more steeled in my resolve to see her attend the Harvard by the Kaw by the moment.

Oh and I resolve to be less fanatical about KU hoops, but like all other resolutions, it'll be broken by January 2nd when we play that idiotically coached highlighter uniformed underachieving team from Wacko.

BAYLOR BEARS - SATURDAY 3 P.M. CBS • Dec 30, 2015 11:22 PM

@wrwlumpy Your fourth picture, the one with the white dome in the middle has a fence that says "Home of the Red Raiders". Are you sure that's Baylor?

BAYLOR BEARS - SATURDAY 3 P.M. CBS • Dec 30, 2015 11:16 PM

My daughter was accepted to Baylor and I was really hoping (actually for this reason only) that she would choose Baylor so I could go and visit her when we played at Baylor.

Great work as usual Lumpy!
