I'm a literalist, so I'm looking at the other site for references about us here. Didn't see anything in the article you linked. Isn't there a general, (i.e. not just us here) feeling that Self isn't doing things right by this team? If you could provide other places where you've seen us mentioned I'd appreciate that too!
The Dodgers had an agreement that blacked out almost half of LA citizens from watching the Dodgers! We're not the only ones who suffer under such idiocy. Vin Scully's wife wouldn't be able to watch his own broadcasts in their home.
It doesn't personally impact me as I'm out of state and have no family in KS. But it still makes my blood boil that they would use what matters most to KU fans as a negotiation chip.
What? We've been to bowl games?
@Crimsonorblue22 Yep, I-55 was closed down in Jackson, MS. Cost us about an hour, which added to the normal length of 14 hours, made for a long day.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yep, saw lots of flooding but not on the road thankfully. Just got home so we missed the game. Was going to watch on ESPN3 as I didn't know the score, but it forwarded to the end for some reason, so I just saw we must have played much better in the 2nd half.
@nuleafjhawk Quick, send an email to coach!
@BeddieKU23 I always got them mixed up!
@JayHawkFanToo Gooden was playing quite a bit at the beginning of the season appearing to still have a viable game. Oubre made the most of 32 minutes of playing time the other night and had decent numbers. He's still just a kid so I think the future is brighter for him.
@VailHawk I looked at their schedule and they haven't much to show for all that size. If you just needed tall players to win a basketball game they'd be ranked in the top 25! So we should be able to operate inside and out because they're not doing too much with all that size.
Well, we were supposed to drive back to Louisiana from Chicago today, but sleet, freezing rain, wind, and storms stretching all the way back to LA means we have an extra day.
IHAVENOTHINGTODO
So here goes.
If basketball were an outdoor sport, and they played in any weather, those guys would be really cold today. It might make for some great TV viewing though.
I saw three terrific DI prospects playing Saturday at the Proviso West tournament. I had no idea walking into the gym that there were DI prospects playing that morning and afternoon, but it was evident the minute they walked on the floor. Particularly stunning was a kid from top ranked Morgan Park named Charlie Moore. He scored 27. He's only 5'11", but ranked 88th in the country and going to Memphis.
Nick Rakocevic is a 6'11" center (duh) from St. Joseph. He nearly had a triple double against the wonderfully named Mighty Men of Dunbar, an inner city school from the south side. 16 points, 15 boards and 8 blocks, and zero fouls. I really wouldn't mind seeing him in a Jayhawk uniform. He's only a junior. St. Joseph's HS is coached by Gene Pingatore, a 79 year old! He's most
famous for Hoop Dreams and was also Isiah Thomas' coach.
The third player I saw was a nice player who is being recruited heavily by Iowa from Larkin HS. He was really good too.
The tournament program has a list of the all tourney teams from each year. I noticed 1977 had Mark Aguirre, Isaiah Thomas, and Glen Rivers. And Mark Aguirre was teammates with Eddie Johnson who played a long time in the league, Eddie didn't make the all tournament team.
If we got paid by the word to post here (we should) I'd type more inane stuff than I already am.
Marcus Morris threw his towel at Suns coach Jeff Hornacek whom I watched play as a Cyclone in the mid 1980's. Marcus is having a rough year and appears on his way out in Phoenix. By the way Hornacek's dad is a basketball official whom I've seen officiate at the aforementioned Proviso West tournament.
I mentioned somewhere else that I bumped into a Jayhawk outfit at the tournament Saturday, caught his eye, he gave me a Rock Chalk, then introduced himself has Sherron's HS coach. He wishes Sherron had kept his weight down while at KU, thinks we didn't get him at his best. He was a very nice man and I enjoyed talking hoops with him.
I was thinking that the Jayhawk Missouri rivalry has got to be the only sports rivalry that crosses the boundary between sports and real life. I mean Bears fans invade Packer territory every summer, but to spend money and enjoy the beautiful outdoors there, and not ransack Oshkosh or Palwaukee.
And I still think that rivalry needs to be renewed. It appears that it was the only thing Misery kept its basketball team relevant for. But it would be a circle the date type of game every year that I would enjoy. I certainly think it'd be more entertaining than playing our next opponent.
I wonder if I could write more than @jaybate-1.0 ? Even on a snowy wintry day at my inlaws with nothing to do? Naw, not going to think about it.
If I could analyze hoops like @HighEliteMajor, @ralster, @BeddieKU23 (is that the year he graduated KU?) @drgnslayr and many others, I would try to determine if this team has enough else going on to survive a NCAA tournament game where our 3's don't drop.
If I was a drinker, I'd ask @brooksmd for advice on what to have on a wintry day with nothing to do.
As a career teacher, I don't know how I'd handle it if I had a job where the boss made me work those two weeks surrounding the holidays.
I'm going to make the family leave early tomorrow morning so we can be home in time for the KU game at 8. That means we leave at 6AM. The Badgers play at 6PM against Purdue, which I'll just have to miss because i'm not leaving at 4AM, I wouldn't even do that for a KU game!
I wonder if Cindy got Bill a new watch for Christmas?
Do KU players get Bill Christmas presents and vice versa?
I got to watch the SDSU game with my KU roommate which was a lot of fun. Usually it's just me watching and my family giving me weird looks.
That same roomie will be in AFH tomorrow night for the first time since we graduated together in 1988.
If memorial stadium hosted a relevant football team that made lots of TV appearances, it would be famous for it's beautiful setting with the hill and the campanile at the top.
LSU hosts Oklahoma the same day KU plays Kentucky. I'm really hoping I can see Okie in person and also be home to watch the KU game. The time hasn't been posted for our game yet.
My former KU players in the pros index:
Good Wiggins, Darrell, Kirk (considering his age, he is a valuable member of the Bulls), Paul, and Nick, BRush
OK. Mario, had 1 great game with Memphis. BMAC, TROB, Marcus, Kelly, (I think he'll be a pretty good pro someday)
Uh, not OK. Cole, Tarik, Kieff, Cliff, Drew, Sasha, Joel
It just seems like KU is not a great producer of NBA players who are extremely good NBA players.
If we could just get together and talk about all this stuff would we end up disliking each other, or just really thinking this was the coolest group of guys and gals anywhere?
Happy Jayhawking and see you tomorrow night from Louisiana!
We saw the recent trotters in person a couple of years ago and was disappointed. Ten minutes of what amounted to street ball quality basketball and then another 'skit' for lack of a better word. It really had me wishing for the days of Meadowlark, Curly, Wilt, and Lynette!
Interesting post HEM, but I still can't get past the concept that coach Self is smarter than any of us when it comes to coaching college basketball. I really hear what you're saying, but I've always been trusting, (maybe too trusting?) in authority figures, and give them the leeway that they're doing the right thing. Bill Self has reasons for playing his guys, and it's not apparent to us. I sure wish he'd tell us.
As an aside, I had an interesting conversation today with Sherron Collins' HS coach. I saw him at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, which is the Chicago areas premiere HS tournament. He told me that we didn't get Sherron at his best because of the weight that he put on at KU. He also believes that Diallo will be starting by the end of the year. He was there wearing a KU shirt and sweatsuit, that's how I ID'd him as a Jayhawks fan, and he appears to really follow the team.
@DinarHawk Hopefully their season ends like Napiers and Boatrights!
When we talk about our three point shooters, we don't often talk about Frank Mason. The dude is nearly 50% from 3. Graham is 40% which is above average, except on our team which also tells you something. Mason is 7th in the nation in assist to turnovers and Graham is 8th! That tells you alot.
Keegan had a nice little article about them.
And a trip down memory lane about that last shot in the Davidson game in 2008 with this interesting factoid. Self wasn't sure Curry was going to succeed in the NBA!
http://www2.kusports.com/news/2015/dec/23/self-happy-curry-didnt-take-last-shot/?mens_basketball ↗
7'6" That's big! Add 300 pounds to that frame and, wow, what size! He's shooting 67% which almost seems low when you're that big.
@jayballer54 Thanks, Merry Christmas to you too.
Ok, so others expertly provide their X's and O's type of wrap ups on the game. I'm not qualified like they are so I just have to throw in my humble (silent H) little infantile thoughts on what happened last night.
The play of the game. SDSU is making us sweat. We have been outscored 16-4 in the 2nd half. We can't make a shot, we've turned it over about 5 times. They're highlight reel dunking on us. The laid back southern California crowd is actually into it, and then this from the play by play:
13:23 Wayne Selden Jr. makes a 27-foot three-pointer. DAGGER. Wayne saddled with 2 new rules fouls in the first half provides the spark to get us back on track. We never really sweat after that shot.
Cheick's two turnaround jumpers had "potential" written all over them.
Our defense seemed especially stout last night.
We are 4-0 in western time zones this year.
Perry can carry our Verry good team like he did in the first half.
The missed bunny monster seemed to strike our team during stretches last night that had me thinking back to last year.
Svi, welcome back to KU for your junior year of college.
IF common sense prevails we should have a very nice team next year as well.
Got to watch the game with my KU roomie and his family who are all KU fans. Usually it's just me and my virtual friends here. Sorry, lady and fellas, but it's really better watching with friends!!
I'm not smart enough to figure out if we are good enough to make good teams look bad, or if we are just better than bad teams. I think SDSU is just an average team and we are so good that we make average look bad.
Devonte Graham is going to leave KU as one of my favorite Jayhawks ever. I just really like the way he plays.
A shooting slump for this team is shooting 42% on 3's. That number represents how good we've got it this year.
@KUSTEVE I think there's a correlation between those two games and the way those two seasons ended. This year is feeling a bit better than those two seasons.
So I guess that's what I want for Christmas, a better feeling than the last two seasons!
@BeddieKU23 Thanks for the info, I saw he played 32 minutes tonight.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yep, same #'s everywhere, but I thought I checked once and we didn't get it.
Cliff aint playing a lick unfortunately for Portland. Of course he'd still be here had he not been screwed over by the adults in his life.
@REHawk I hate those draft predictors. I know you wrote "for what it's worth"
Svi, NBA next year? Yeah, right.
Cheick, when so far he can't find minutes ahead of fellow freshman Bragg? Yeah, right.
I'm glad at least we will get Bragg back. Hopefully these other kids will not read these things and run for the money.
I suppose Kelley Oubre's millions are giving him something to think about while he's riding the pines in Washington.
What a stupid world this is.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I'm pretty sure I don't have CBSSports network on my DirectTV. I'm out of town, so I'll have to check next week!
Looks like I missed a lot of hoops yesterday.
Some people get to live in San Diego, and then there's the rest of us, although @VailHawk's got it pretty good too.
Been driving all day, I missed a bunch of 3's maybe????
@globaljaybird Thanks for that factoid. Fascinating.
Gasp! Horror! You're saying the refs protected MJ? Sacrilege! @approxinfinity How do I block drgnslayr?
@brooksmd Had just started my first teaching job that week. Must have been distracted!
I hear they play some really good basketball in that city too.
Was Saberhagen's no-no against someone other than the White Sox? I don't recall them being no hit by KC and Brett.
I saw someone, Barkley (?) who said the 1995-1996 Bulls would kick the Warriors all the way across San Francisco Bay! Of course, as someone who thinks everything was better when we were younger I'd have to agree.
Awesome pictures!
I saw a few Royals hats at the Dome last night for the womens soccer match.
I'm not the most sophisticated of basketball minds, but what I see is their superior athleticism allows them to push quickly past the opposing defense to create wide open looks because the defense isn't in position yet.
Their set pieces however seem to show the brilliance of this team. They're simply one of the best teams I've ever seen play basketball.
Interesting stuff!
I've always been an admirer of Naismith as a person who acted on his Christian Faith. He once sent out a letter that the sport was becoming too physical and un Christ like and urged the game to be cleaned up. I think his plea worked, but it apparently didn't apply to Syracuse, Louisville, Georgetown, and, ahem, my beloved Big1G!
Basketball basketball basketball
@nuleafjhawk Could you teach that word saving skill to, well, you know who? :)
@nuleafjhawk That's why they pay you the big bucks with spot on analysis like that.
I dislike some teams that are good for obvious reasons, but I've always admired ISU. Fred had them play so well, obviously against us especially, but always seemed to do it in a classy manner.
Their fans on the other hand........
@globaljaybird We need some payback motivation with SDState for their beatdown of our wimpy Hawks of several years ago.
I noticed a jump in Jeff's numbers very recently. He had been DNP Coaches Decision most games of the season. I was thinking he might not play anywhere if he's not finding minutes for the 10-13 Jazz.
I've also noticed Markieff is being touted as trade material. It's benefited one of my old badger Favs, John Leuer, but Kieff has strung together some DNP's also. Hornacek likes the way the Jazz are playing without him starting, so suddenly an up and coming pro looks pretty vulnerable to decline.
@wrwlumpy It's called Moraine Lake, and it's in Banff NP.
@jaybate-1.0 We lucked out and were there for the week of summer last summer.
The geographer teacher in me needs to point out the pic of the mountains with the lake in the foreground is up north in the Canadian Rockies!
Count me as one who has often wished to be born and raised in Montana. Spent a fabulous week in the Yellowstone area this summer, actually staying in Montana. Hated to leave.
Speaking of grizzlies I'm sure the grizzly my sons encountered on a trail was scarier than the basketball team coming to AFH!
How tall is the young man? He had a brother playing here at Southern University I think.
@RockChalkinTexas Totally inexperienced team. Koenig and Hayes are proving they thrive better with a supporting cast and are not carrying the load by themselves. Basically they have Hayes, Koenig and Happ who are legitimate starters and that's it. All of the Bo streaks are going to end this season I'm afraid, no dance, no 4th or better in the Big1G, etc. It's tough to complain too much, but makes me wonder what the future will be like.
@HawkInMizery I don't have much to contribute here so I just try to make people laugh a little bit sometimes!
@ralster I had already deleted my recording of the game and so I couldn't remember at what point it happened.
I wish we'd stop TINKLEing around with this team.
Maybe I'll get a new watch at my retirement party which will come sooner than later if these dang fans don't leave me alone.
Shoot, I can't keep up with the gang at KUbuckets on my google watch. I don't have a clue what halftime adjustments to make now.
If Payton posterizes Cheick again I'm gonna posteriorize Cheick.
Christmas is coming, maybe Cindy will upgrade my wristpiece.
I don't play Tyler tonight, Cindy's gonna make me sleep on the couch.
If we miss another bunny I'm gonna break more than a watch.
I'm getting schooled by a coach from Montana.
We lose this game, boot camp next year will have casualty's.
I wish was one of those halfs that people couldn't watch because of our idiot AD.
And a few minutes after he broke his watch?
Basketball is really easy when I let guys shoot threes.
Basketball is really fun when I let guys push the tempo.
Basketball is really better when some of these stiffs are sitting on the bench.
Basketball is a blast when I get to put Evan and Tyler in, whew, no couch tonight.
Got to remind the guys to play like this in both halfs next week.
Might have to get Brannen more than one shot next game.
This year we will tie UNC's streak of 27 tournaments in a row and next year we will have the longest NCAA tournament streak of all time. I think that's more impressive than 11 Big12's in a row.
@drgnslayr That was my first instinct, Arizona?
