Amen. I completely agree. Cal is not the enemy and many coaches are still coaching that probably shouldn't be,. Many have been given many chances at many schools, but moving from one place to another and leaving a school on probation leaves a bitter taste each time it happens. I'll just read the articles from now on and not the comments.
Chaney was never a saint and Cal has never been an innocent school boy.
@JayHawkFanToo Yes I remember that incident. I was referring to what he said before he lost the high ground. Threatening to "Kill" Cal that cost him a one game suspension. In todays world people have said he would have been suspended for an entire year. I forgot all about the goon. All I know is that he coached an inner city group that played suffocating defense. His legacy is similar to Bobby Knight. Knight and Chaney were a lot alike. Both were old school A$$ holes. Like @Bucknell above, The coach of UVA is one of the most refreshing coaches in the land and he is the one I would pick to replace Self 10 years from now. Players of Knight and Chaney, except for the ones they choked, defended and loved both of them.
Mike Woodson was a Hoosier that played for the KC Kings. A reporter asked him how Knight got the best out of his players. His answer was, "If you were timed in a 40 yard dash the first one would be OK, but the second time Knight would yell at you and cuss you as you ran. the second time was always much faster." I also gave him a pass because Roy like him so much.
That was an excellent article but I could have lived without all the racial attacks of the comments included at the bottom of the article.
@wissoxfan83 Sorry, don't know what happened to the video and I could not find it again. but here is an article that has the written transcripts. I replaced it with the written story.
Another great KU athletics highlight from yesterday.

Still, no one but Coach knows who will start.

In 1993, KU's first division 1 opponent was John Chaney and the Temple Owls. Roy and John had become good friends, even though KU had won the last two battles by a lot. Temple came to Lawrence a day early and Roy had taken John out for BBQ. During the pre-game, John praised the Jayhawks and the BBQ, and then went on to chalk up one of the rare wins in Allen Field house. Temple under Chaney played a Zone Press which is what he was known for and it took him to the NCAA tournament 17 times.
He later gained the respect of all KU fans when he took on John Calipari for swearing at the Refs and threatening them after a Temple - UMass game, telling them they would never work as Refs ever again.

Giant Opie!
In other news, UK beats UCLA worse than they beat KU. Michigan State loses to Texas Southern.

Mickelson looked good in the early practice for the fans last year before he had to sit out. Coach also said he will be careful when announcing his starters early. Greene sat because he missed weight training. I know it was Lafayette, but there was a much better flow than we've seen before. Great passing all around and one more pass had all the shooters wide open in great rhythm. Beat the Owls!
I became a Jayhawk fan in 1966 when Ted Owens and Bob Vanatta of of Mizzou came to our high school to recruit our star player. I was a junior on that team and realized that he was a player way beyond the mere mortals of the rest of us. My Senior year I listened to the Hawks on radio and sometimes they would be on TV sponsored by Phillips 66 with "Hot Rod" Huntley as the announcer. TV games were only on Saturdays and the rest were with Max on the radio. 1966 was the year that KU should had defeated Texas Western when JoJo hit the big shot but it was waved off because the ref said he had stepped out of bounds. "My Avatar show his heel clearly off the line" but I became hooked after that year. I later taught at KU during the summers and watched WIlt play against the KC Kings many times. Steve Woodbury and JoJo White have been my favorites for the last 49 years.
Susquehanna is a division III squad. This game is all about the extended practice during finals. It might be one of the most telling games of the year in regards to who will play going into Conference. Who will get the minutes will be interesting. More plays have been added, more individual work has taken place. If coach yells, he cares, if he is not yelling at you, you won't be getting the minutes.. It is that time of year.
Kentucky has put a bulls eye on us and we, as always, will get everyone's best shot.
Only one more blackout after this - Kent State. Those who don't have Direct TV, like I do, can watch the game on ESPN 3 on the computer. For some reason ESPN does not like competition.
Who starts at the wing and who starts at Center?
Many on the East Coast feel this is a trap game for the Leopards since their next game is with the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

I get the feeling that this is what we'll be seeing. How will he do with free throws at the end of the game, will he still be the best rebounder on the team? Usually it is a senior Guard that plays a whole game. I agree that if anyone can do it, it will be the Bulldog.
Only at KU Buckets can we appreciate the James Joyce and Dostoevsky of Basketball. The Offense is the right one when it is run properly, Self is a Genius and a disciplinarian. Half of us on this site Moan when Greene is taken out of a game, it is not because of a missed shot, it will always be because of Defense. If Svi is taken out, it is because he hasn't learned something yet. If a player doesn't play, it is probably because of what goes on or doesn't go on in practice. I believe in Bill and he is not a God, but he is the coach who plays the toughest schedule and has the highest winning percentage in Basketball. Thanks again, both of you.
I think I agree with you, I think.
The Kentucky debacle lingers in the eyes of the voters. We will probably be 12-1 before conference and will not be in the top 5. Where would we be ranked without playing Kentucky. Our players did not get down, we as fans did. Vitale talked about the shock that was sent throughout basketball when KU lost. Another thought, since UK is staying with a Lineup in the last 5 minutes, who has been hit the hardest, UK with the loss of Poythress or KU with the loss of Graham?
The Bleacher Report Picked KU as a loser in this week's poll.
After losing to Kentucky in the Champions Classic a few weeks ago, Kansas dropped six spots to No. 11, receiving 981 votes.
Since then, the Jayhawks are 7-0 with wins over Florida, Georgetown, Michigan State, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Utahβeach of which is currently rated in the Top 100 on KenPom.com.
This week, while Duke and Virginia played nobody and Texas (vs. Texas State) and Wisconsin (at Milwaukee, vs. Nicholls State) effectively played nobody, Kansas really challenged itself with a road game against Georgetown and a "semi-home" game against Utah, winning them both.
Rather than steadily climbing back into the Top 5 during that incredible run, the Jayhawks are at No. 10 for a second straight week and only received 121 more votes than they did after getting absolutely embarrassed by Kentucky.
The Jayhawks are simply the unfortunate victim of top teams refusing to suffer bad losses. Until someone slips up, it seems they've reached a bit of a glass ceiling.

I knew that. I took a non-flash photo of the Nighthawk at the Art institute of Chicago. Not the Night Owl.
Oh, I get it. Frank MASON! Yeah, I see.

NBA rookie of the month.
Free throws against Syracuse - National Championship
@jaybate-1.0 And Toto too.
@HighEliteMajor Not having Devonte will not make us better. Really, the only combination that made me feel comfortable was when he and Frank were handling the ball and pressuring the perimeter on defense. The inconsistency has been at the wing where no one has stepped up for more than one game. The bigs and the wing will get better as the season goes on, but without Devonte, we just got worse at the guard position.
We are going to miss Devonte's ball handling and driving abilities. I like all of the qualities of Greene and his height, but unless we find him a spot up three and he is hitting them, his ball handling skills hurt us as well as his defense. Mason will have to play 36 minutes a game. He'll have to be taken out a minute before a TV timeout to get any kind of a breather. He might be out for a month or the rest of the season. Google "Turf Toe."
Glad we got Jamari back. The DVR viewing will be the first half then fast forwarding to watching Jamari and Greene shoot free throws.
The things we talk about while we wait for a tough game to start beside Holly, Erin and Butts.
Jamari is back quite contrite and ready to prove his worth. Brannen wants to prove he should always start and promises not to foul out. Svi wants his minutes. Frank and Wayne want to guard Delon. Cliff and Perry continue facing big guys and learning what it will take to beat Texas. We've won the last two big games by attacking, getting fouled and then hitting free throws to win. Not what we usually expect from KU, but this team keeps on winning against tough foes and I hope we play Kentucky again with our new mind set.
As opposed to Erin Andrews and the sideline fluff.!erinandrewseatsasandwich1.jpg β
I saw on tv tonight that Brannen will make his first start as a Jayhawks.
Holly is one of us. Player's like her, Coach likes her and she can stand in the huddle and!8309212.jpg β tell the color guys what Self said without using his actual swear words
At least this thread is not stuck at the top any more.
The John Brown Conference. OOPS, we lose all of the Southern teams.
The Kaw River Valley Conference. The Adidas Conference.
This is a really good team we play tomorrow. This 7 footer will cause more problems than Josh Smith. Frank can handle Delon.
After Georgetown, can anyone predict who will start at the wing? Will it be Brannen, Kelly or Svi. Lucas is getting better and better and better each game, but will probably will keep losing minutes to Cliff. I'm so glad he red shirted. Poor Hunter, the Princeton burned his ass the second he came in the game. He will play this year, but for now, it seems like that will only come when two of the Three Little Bigs foul out.
