@HighEliteMajor Tyon is our second best recruit by a large margin.

Ryan knew this would happen. Sucks tho.

Multi-year 5* dream recruit. Thank goodness for that connection because the rest of the class is reaaaal lean.

Transfers • Dec 05, 2019 06:35 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 He didn't even make it out of boot camp, wasn't in team photos etc. I think the timing will let him play all of next year but we will see.

@FarmerJayhawk Not gonna argue that, Trask is better.

I'm not sure if KU is in a position to tell Franks no to hope to get Fortin. Fortin probably has better options.

@BShark he practiced w/us, he can't play in the fall, right? Like CF.

No he should be good to play right away next year. Frankamp played his FR year so it's a different situation.

@BeddieKU23 Best part about this is it signifies that he is pretty locked in to KU.

If they can go get a higher-end transfer QB, I think you'll see a big jump next season.

Lot of smoke for Feleipe Franks to KU.

Oh man. Pls no. Million dollar airport, $10 light tower. I guess I’d take him if we whiff on Fortin and other targets but... woof

Seen him play a fair bit since he was at a high profile school and I catch a lot of CFB games. Honestly, I'd take him in a second. He's a guy that wins you some games on his athletic ability alone. Defenses are a lot less tough in the B12.

We can't be too picky right now. Plug him in for one year while hopefully picking up someone else.

Is Fortin eligible right away?

Transfers • Dec 05, 2019 05:59 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Plan is to enroll this spring and count this current year as a RS year. Weird situation.

Issac McBride to Vanderbilt.

@Woodrow Yeah I get the whole thing about it taking awhile for preseason ranking impact to wear off but this is ridiculous.

Apparently Langford will not return this season so that hurts them a lot. Still though, it's amazing how Izzo controls the narrative. They will end up a lower seed and suddenly play more to their talent level in March and everyone will gush over Izzo when the reality is he underachieves in the regular season...

Michigan looked like a team that wasn’t ranked last week. Must have used all there 3 point shots Last week in the Bahamas.

Hell, their 2 point shots as well. Just 12-39 from 2...wow. Their defense continues to be elite though.

I wonder if Michigan State after getting killed by Duke finally falls in the Kenpom/Torvik etc rankings.

Nice to basically wrap up the division.

@Crimsonorblue22 I call bullshit. Also typical slime K to make it all about him.

Honestly not sure I buy it but these two paint a kinder picture than Kenpom.

@BShark Because Self and company got lucky with 2 kids that were after thoughts in recruiting. Mason's class was typical Self, Wiggins and Selden neither could or still can shoot. Devonte was another lucky one. Josh Jackson, Grimes, Preston, DeSousa....Its all the same. Look Ive said it before. We will finish top 5 maybe a 1 seed and we will lose to a team that can withstand our D and actually shoot.

Selden shot 39% from three as a JR.

In the last two classes, these guys are all considered "shooters": Braun, Wilson, McBride, Thompson, Jossell.

Muscadin has a nice touch as well for a big, and has been hitting some threes.

Obviously McBride didn't work out and he quit on the team. Time will tell on the rest but Bill has been going after shooters.

JRE and Hurt can both shoot, those were Self first choices and he missed on them.

Does the current team have an issue shooting the three? Absolutely but there is nothing to do about it now. I do not expect this team to win a national title.

Offense Coming Around.... • Nov 30, 2019 09:45 PM

@BigBad literally made the final four with a heavy three point shooting team. Self adapts to his personnel. This team will feed Doke and drive the ball.

Baylor is good

4-3 Iowa State you hate to see it.

2020 Recruiting • Nov 29, 2019 10:26 PM

@BeddieKU23 I guess he is okay with being deep bench. He is ranked in the 70s and starting right away isn't for everyone.

Silvio De Diallo • Nov 29, 2019 05:04 PM

@dylans when it is wiiide open and a player like Simien I am okay with it. That is a painful memory.

Marc G Appreciation Thread • Nov 29, 2019 04:44 PM

@AsadZ He is turning it over slightly more (the Duke game did no favors to anyone) but his turnover % is actually lower because his handling/usage are up a lot.

I think Garrett, Doke and Dotson are all in the conversation as they have all improved a lot. Which is good because Agbaji hasn't really improved at all, Dave looks better at times but is erratic and Moss looks like the same player he was at Iowa.

Offense Coming Around.... • Nov 29, 2019 04:38 PM

The interesting part is that it was deliberate by Self and a departure from how we defended against BYU. He dared Dayton to make threes and they obliged. We will never know now how the game would have went if Bill would have played them the same way. I'm guessing Toppin would have went off, but maybe the end result would have been similar (or better).

Silvio De Diallo • Nov 29, 2019 03:37 PM

If we had Kawhi or Lamarcus on the roster I'd be okay with some two point jumpers. Clearly, we do not.

KK picked Arkansas. Just a very puzzling decision given the roster

Honestly... and I know that this doesn't really happen much in basketball but he should have opened it back up. Neither KU or Arky made sense if he wants to play next year.

Marc G Appreciation Thread • Nov 29, 2019 03:03 PM

@BeddieKU23 Dotson has increased his ppg by 7.5 while increasing efficiency.

Early Season Musings • Nov 28, 2019 11:25 PM

So we are now 7 games in including a tight game against a really good team that felt like an NCAAT game.

I'd say players are in these groups

Ride or die: Dotson, Ochai, Garrett, Udoka

Bill will play these guys as much as possible in big games. Udoka is limited by his conditioning, even if it is much improved. Foul trouble is the only way we see the others out for much time in big games.

Possibly Ride or Die: Moss

This is something to monitor going forward. He is getting healthier to the point where he seems fully healthy now. He averaged 33 minutes a game in the two real games in Maui (sorry Chaminade).

Firmly in the rotation: Enaruna, McCormack.

Dave is a starter in name only and I am not sure how much longer it will last. That said I still expect him to be the main back-up 5 based on what we have seen so far. He is a step down from Doke but much better than Silvio so far, especially on offense.

Enaruna flashes at times but can disappear for periods. It says a lot that he has had a big defensive impact statistically while not having a great idea of what he is doing. If it fully clicks for him at KU on that end he will be a terror.

Foul trouble/blow out minutes/deeper bench: Braun, Silvio.

Braun just isn't ready defensively and has been pretty bad on offense albeit in very limited opportunities. He has to get stronger and more confident and he will be fine going forward. His role this year is that of a reserve though and I don't see that changing barring injury. I would guess no more than 6 minutes in a big game when someone needs a breather.

Silvio is a weirder case that I already went more in depth on in the other thread I made. I don't think his role is set in stone like many others are.

Other Big-12 action • Nov 28, 2019 08:07 PM

Juwan Howard is an elite defensive coach.

Self has proven that he is a great game coach so I rarely question his decisions or his ability to make in-game adjustments but as a player knowing you will be yanked the moment you make a mistake doesn't help.

It's really only Silvio now. Agbaji and others get to play through mistakes.

The big reason why is he just has no idea where he is supposed to be offensively or defensively. That's a big no no with Self.

jhawk7782 said:

I also think Triston should get more minutes. He can play at least three positions and is frankly better than those who play ahead of him. I'm a huge Garrett fan but his inability to play without so many fouls and lack of offense is becoming a liability.

Tristan is 6th in minutes played which I feel is about right. He has some good tools and the length to defend but drifts at times and his shooting is an adventure. It might go in, or it might not even hit the rim. Overall I do like him and defensively he is clearly in our top 3 impactful guys (with Doke and Garrett).

So who does he get minutes over is the question.

There is a good reason Moss played 36 minutes yesterday. Despite him only taking one shot he was crucial to the win. He was engaged completely on the defensive end (very proud of his effort), moved the ball and most importantly forced Dayton to respect him from the 3 line. I like getting Moss starter type minutes going forward as we depart from the 3-2.

Garrett is our third best player right now and it's not particularly close. He just keeps improving every year. He has his limitations but if he stays healthy he should be very respectable at that end. He was really coming along last year before the ankle injury took away his greatest strength - driving. We've seen it now multiple times in the clutch where Garrett makes a great play to get to the basket.

Whatever we think of Ochai, he played all 45 minutes yesterday so it's clear what Self thinks. To me he is the biggest concern at this point and we really have to hope he improves because he will play.

Silvio De Diallo • Nov 28, 2019 06:16 PM

@jhawk7782 the big issue is yesterday outside of the first 2-3 minutes we were only playing one big. That means 46 total big minutes. I think we can all agree Udoka is far and away our best big offensively. So it comes down to Dave or Silvio for back-up minutes which had to be sparing because that is a game where Self was riding the best guys.

Theory - Self wants to have Dave next year much more than Silvio. Does not want to provoke a transfer. With Doke likely gone, he needs Dave in the middle. Without Dave, we don't have that big presence in the middle.

@Marco What say you, though, about his compatibility on the floor at the same time with Doke?

Doke is a SR, so he is 100% gone.

Silvio De Diallo • Nov 28, 2019 01:22 PM

@Hawk8086 Dave makes mistakes that are acceptable to Bill, that's the big difference. Old habits die hard.

Either second big is a pretty big step down offensively from Doke that's for sure.
