@tundrahok Awhile ago I mentioned any win is a good win for this team. That's where I am at. I don't expect anything out of the NCAAT. Extending the league streak would be a pleasant shock.

Are there more players redshirting that we can try?
Put in the bearded waterboy I think his name is Mank Frason.
BREAKING NEWS: KU HAS SIGNED A MID SEASON TRANSFER NAMED MRANK FASON. ELIGIBLE TO PLAY IMMEDIATELY
Are there more players redshirting that we can try?
This Texas team got 98 hung on them by UGA.

There should be a rule that Vick bounces the ball no more than 3 times. Shoot spot up jumpers and cut to the basket only.
PG tho
This team just doesn't know what it is doing on offense.

what the hell are we doing?
Probably not rebounding, according to my twitter feed.

What is this lineup?!
Is it already throwing poo at the wall time?

Where is Vick?
Standard every other week benching of your only SR.
As for roster construction Grimes and Moore were expected to be able to shoot.
I'm not sure if I can blame Self at least from a coaching perspective. This team just can't shoot.
KirkIsMyHinrich said:
KU still can't run a half-court offense. And also we suck in transition. These are problems.
Seems bad.
I really don't see this KU team winning on the road.

Dedric is leaving, and it wouldn't surprise me to see KJ leave too as a grad transfer. Dedric isn't going to improve his draft position much. Even if he gets significantly better next season, the 2020 draft is MUCH stronger than the 2019 draft, which is about as good as the year Anthony Bennett went #1. I don't really think Dedric is a NBA level player but he is the kind of guy that can make millions overseas. Silvio will be back if he's cleared this year. The $60k payment was never made and the NCAA and KU have agreed that it's not relevant to his case.
Doke is the hardest one to read. He was great when healthy, but hasn't stayed as such. His injuries have been kind of flukey and he's really young (doesn't turn 20 until September). As of today I think he leaves but if KU doesn't land anyone significant in the spring I can see Doke and the staff making arrangements for him to come back for another season.
Thank you for the info. Good stuff.

Missouri choked away a 14 point lead with 2:03 left yesterday against LSU.
Death, taxes...
@justanotherfan great point. I really wish Garrett could shoot. The big issue is that the other options are much worse atm. Self is between a rock and a hard place.

Mitch (wtf dude?)
I've had some bad takes (it's a forum and we are having fun) but I remember people thinking Mitch would be in the rotation. And that was assuming KU would be at full strength.
@DoubleDD No doubt in my biased KU mind. KU wins with the roster we expected to start the year.
KirkIsMyHinrich said:
About what I expected missing two bigs and playing on the road with youth. It'll be okay.
SOS PLZ GIVE US SILVIO NCAA
That was basically the game. Cal didn't even have to coach. At this point I doubt it happens but having Silvio would be great. Otherwise this is a first weekend exit team.
I think UK slams KU today. Too many horses. KU not playing well.

Did I read where one of the Blue Valley schools Coach was coaching in that game?? Anyone else see that ?
Correct.

KU is going to run the race with Todd but I think the chances of getting him are slim. Plan A is to get at least 2/5 of Dedric/Doke/Silvio/Hurt/Precious.
If plan A hits, KU should be pretty good next year. If I could pick I'd take Silvio and Hurt.
Todd is reaaaaally good.
FarmerJayhawk said:
FWIW, KU feels better about its chances with Precious than most realize.
If he ended up in Lawrence that would be a game changer. I think he'd be really exciting as a 4 under Self.
I'm not saying to kick Mitch off the team or anything, he has value. He's just not as good as other options and Self has tightened his rotation.

@BShark any reason why Mitch didn't play at all?
Not good at basketball.
If Mitch can't hit a 3 there really is very little time for him in the 4-1. What can Mitch do that Garrett or Big Dave can't do better?
Not much. He should have redshirted.
Mitch has played 2 minutes in all of conference play.

@justanotherfan I think I'll wait until after the KSU game to make my prediction. If we go 4-0 or 3-1 during this next stretch, I think Bill might have something working.

Well I can remember some posters here making the argument that one of Self’s biggest (perceived) failings is he “plays favorites” to win every game in place of giving the (percieved) more “talented” freshmen valuable minutes to learn thru growing pains and mistakes, which then comes to supposedly hurt the team come March.
I don’t have stats here to put this in real context, but it sure feels like Grimes has been given more than ample playing time. Don’t think this is Selfs fault this time.
Is it me, Or does Grimes just not look that althetic?.. (I never looked at his high school hilites for any context)
To me he looks more or less average athletically at best, a tad slow, and sluggish more than explosive. Selden ( oft compared to Grimes) as we remember struggled his first year, but to me he always showed athleticism. The potential seemed there.
He needs to lose some weight.
It's crazy, so frequently when KU finally gets a top 10 recruit they get hurt, don't live up to expectations etc... Selby, Diallo, Alexander, Selden...

Just feels so similar to Newman's struggles last year. We expected the world of Malik and he really disappointed for most of the season but then the light came on and look what he did for that team by season's end, indispensable. Not in the Final 4 without his heroics.
Fast forward a year and we expected the world from Grimes. Maybe Grimes and Self need a day to just clear the air and figure some things out. His play has been below expectations but we've seen time and time again how players figure it out at some point under the right motivation. I still think Self has some work to do to find what triggers Q the most. That's when he'll get the most out of him.
Agbaji has it now. Play the kid with the confidence. Interchange depending on game matchup and in-game performance. How many coaches have two kids they can push against each other like that.
This is my feelings. It isn't like Bill thinks Q can't do it. Or else he wouldn't keep rolling him out there.
Bill is just searching for the right buttons to push. Two more months to figure it out.
Honestly what might be best for him is basically sitting him an entire game or two and telling him to just let him get some confidence from practice for a week or two. Put him on the practice squad and tell him to just make plays, don't think. Make him go up against Garrett on both sides. If he can defend Garrett drives and he can score on Garrett, that's when you know you can play him again.
CJ just posted an article on the Athletic about this.
Link? I don't see it.
Gag me
Bill mentioned that Dotson helped create some of these looks for Garrett. Dotson penetrates a bit which forces a bit of help and gets Garrett the space he needs.
Self's use of Garrett hearkens back to JJ a bit and in some ways, Garrett is kind of like a mini-JJ.
Dedric commented after the game that ISU's bigs were fouling him all game, lol.

@truehawk93 That was a really old post you replied to. This thread is from early December. I bumped it back up to call out my own bad take.
A poster on the phog at the game said at the end of the game Grimes was so frustrated he finally snapped. Got into it with teammates and a member of the coaching staff near the end of the game. They were at the game of course, since this didn't show up on TV.

Where’s Q gonna go juco ?!? 😂 The kid’s hardly ready for NCAA let alone the NBA. I hope that delusion has left his skull, but you never know.
Bill doesn't even trust to put him out in key situations now and is totally correct.
Q didn't enter in the 2nd half until very late. He promptly got lost on D and Self pulled him back out. Self can't afford to play Q big minutes.

Yep.
I think he'd be better next year, but retaining Dotson is much more important. I think Dotson is the key to next year's back court being really good. Sprinkle in some more improvement from Garrett and Ochai.
