MJ Rice out with an undisclosed injury. @Kcmatt7
@rockchalkjayhawk said in Pitt State Gorillas Game Thread:
Wait, did i see above that Udeh is staring with KJ? Or was that silliness?
wow!
We don't know yet for sure. Game notes say KJ and Zach. I've heard KJ/Udeh and Gradey/Udeh as well. Chaos!
Personally I think we need to overreact and get WILD as much as possible over this exhibition @FarmerJayhawk
MJ Rice not going through warm-ups per Swain.
@FarmerJayhawk Can't trust Bill I'm afraid. KJ starting either way though, not sure how it makes me feel.
@stoptheflop Somewhere around there maybe 6'6'' Draymond/Vital type role.
@stoptheflop Nothing official yet to be clear. Hearings :trade_mark:
I would think if Udeh doesn't start it will be Zach. Sounds like KJ has made big strides, something to monitor.
@KirkIsMyHinrich Yeah lol. I tweeted about this and Dajuan liked my tweet. I've made it.

2 hours away. We might be starting 2 bigs!
Oh don't be mysterious, who?
Believe the starting line-up will be Dajuan, Kevin, Jalen, KJ, Udeh.

Louisville just skated free lol.
Minnesota was tied at the half with ST Olaf. Managed to win by 16.
@Kcmatt7 said in Self & Townsend Suspended 4 games (First 4):
@BShark This probably true. But damn is this just super frustrating. The length of time it has taken. The embarrassment. The fact that the most incriminating piece of evidence was a phone call about a player we didn't even get. That somehow Duke, UNC and UK were able to essentially avoid this also makes it that much worse.
I just want it to be resolved. Let's get it over with. Delaying penalties did get us a Natty. So I'm not saying that wasn't the right strategy. And recruiting is 100% back on track which makes me think postseason bans are completely off the table (which the IARP basically said they would be, because they didn't want to penalize students who had nothing to do with it). So if it is a postseason ban for Bill or whatever it may be, let's get it done and over with.
Yeah I'm with you on all of this. It's incredibly stupid.
@Kcmatt7 said in Self & Townsend Suspended 4 games (First 4):
I wonder if Dooley gets to be a bench coach for this? This is all super weird if the IARP didn't suggest this.
About 0% this is happening without some stuff being worked out.
@P-H-C It sounds weird but ESPN+ does not give you ESPN or ESPN2. You'd have to find a service with those on it.
@BeddieKU23 said in Insane Scrimmage/Exhibition Results:
Not unexpected with Louisville. Rebuild
Still, some Fort Hays shit for them.
Woof. Anyone else feel free to post any odd results you see here.
Hearings: would expect KJ to start at this spot against Pitt St. Will update if something changes.
@Crimsonorblue22 Could have used another pass rusher for sure. Chiefs still have assets to make a move with too..
@Crimsonorblue22 Hardman is about to be overpaid. Two of his touchdowns could have been scored by any of our skill position guys he just happened to be the one they drew the play up for. Toney is a better route runner when engaged but that's a big key with him.
@drgnslayr said in The 4-Out Rotation:
I think Harris will produce more points this year... but whatever happens, happens. His responsibility isn't to score, but to run the show.
I remember when we pushed Sherron for more offense... and how that went... and he was a more skilled scorer who had some body for his drives.
I hope Harris spends more time working out offense with other players... earning himself some assists.
I think he just needs to get to around 9ppg if this team is going to get close to their ceiling.
@FarmerJayhawk said in Bulletin Board Material:
Let’s be honest. Big 12 COY is the “Ope you came closer than we thought to Billy Eugene Self” award
I have long said they should rename the award to something along these lines.
@Kcmatt7 Yeah the Chiefs had something like 13 draft picks, you almost have to move some of them.
@Kcmatt7 said in Chiefs signings:
@BShark YACtion. Hope they bring back Juju.
Replaces Mecole easily IMO. He has all the tools to be the best WR on the roster but that depends on keeping him engaged plus staying healthy. Don't think he will end up with the best stats but he has special ability making cuts and does not go down easy.
@Kcmatt7 said in The 4-Out Rotation:
I don't expect people to want MJ over DaJuan. But if Bobby starts playing really well or something you'll definitely hear it.
Harris DOES need to be better this year though. He has to shoot and score more, and be a go-to guy in some clutch situation.
Supposedly the staff thinks he is on track for this. I need to see it in games.
@benshawks08 Honestly yes but it never works that way.
LOVE the Toney trade don't @ me.
@Kcmatt7 I think he deserves coach of the year if he wins the league. Conference at a minimum but possibly nationally as well.

Bill Self has been winning the league with lesser teams since Greg Waddell was in diapies.
I saw this and laughed. Some of the stuff here has to be inside jokes or something. There was a KSU guy in bturn's mentions saying KU won't finish top 5 or some crap and it would be a long year. Very unbiased take I'm sure.
The amusing thing about all this is you could definitely make an argument for KU being generally overrated (top 5 is a bit high imo) and that there are three potentially better rosters in the league (TCU, Baylor, Texas) but I still wouldn't want to bet against Bill Self.

Just a weird final 5
Was this updated?
I saw it updated on Twitter but wondering if its false since I can't find it easily.
I haven't seen anything official yet. Don't think we are in it after taking Elmarko regardless.
@Jethro One of the bigs you listed will for sure not play. Early on maybe Bill tries to feel things out but it won't be 4 guys by January. The other one out of that group that won't play is a tough call.
Cam hurt, will be out a few weeks.
@BeddieKU23 Agree with this. Bill's comment about Juan, McCullar and JWill being championship level players was telling. We were all assuming it would be the case but it will be quite shocking if any of them are under 33 minutes a game I feel. There is also a reason that these 3 have been on all the social media stuff. They are the face of the team, and Jalen will definitely have a large shot load.
I eagerly await the Dajuan/KJ line-up where neither team scores for 4 minutes.
@Kcmatt7 TOP ROPE take, I'm here for it.

Great point bshark
After last years run it has completely changed how I enjoy the team
It was nice for Self to get another one. I don't believe we were the best team last year but you never know what will happen in the tournament and it really goes to show how well Self does with experienced teams. Certainly we had some talent, two guys were drafted but no one would mistake that for even one of the top 5 rosters under Self at KU.
Heck Kentucky ran both of the title game participants out of the building but fell to St Peters in the first round. If Kentucky stays healthy they are the best team in the country this year. Still wouldn't bet on them to win the tournament against the field though.
Updates here from Self's media availability today from Michael Swain.
"We're going to have to win by learning how to make [opponents] play worse"
Scrimmage
"I thought we played better than I thought we did live action ... We defended at least average. ... We got the ball to where it needs to go."
"It's hard to say you play poorly when you got the ball where it needed to go."
Self said the title team had great intangibles. The team was tough and paid attention to the scouting report. Said this year's team isn't there yet. Noted it takes time.
Self said Jalen Wilson, Kevin McCullar and Dajuan Harris are championship players.
On the young centers: "Those young kids are young. They weren't recruited to be [at David McCormack's level] this young."
Self said KU misses McCormack and Lightfoot. Noted the young big men have talent but aren't seasoned.
"We need to score before the defense gets set."
Self said he wants this team to shoot more 3s than last season.
Self said he sees some similarities between a young Wayne Selden and MJ Rice. Noted MJ will be much better in February than he is now, Will need to play to his athletic ability.
"Our big guys are 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D." Said nobody has emerged.
On Zach Clemence: "He's got to be a post presence even though he's a perimeter post man"
Self said Bobby Pettiford has only been healthy recently. Noted he's looked good when he's played. Self said in a perfect world Pettiford will take the backup role behind Harris. If he can't, it'll go to McCullar.
On Yesufu: "He has to go score."
@kuballin10 I will also add on McCullar that he looked a lot better before his ankle injuries. Health is a legit concern for him but if he can stay healthy I see a break out season happening for him.
We want Zach to separate from the pack I feel, but it's an uphill battle because he's not what you would call a Bill Self big.
Somewhere around 24-7 in the regular season is my guess. Top 3 in the conference, 2nd weekend of the tournament hopefully.
Fran and Bill are friends he doesn't actually hate KU lol
@Crimsonorblue22 said in The 5 spot:
@BShark because we have to depend it that or because nobody can do it? I assume it's the first.
Both but mostly the first. I do think Bill will adapt though.
Mahoooooooomes
@Kcmatt7 said in The 5 spot:
“
“At the end of the day, you’ve still got to be able to throw the ball (inside),” Self said. “Our last two baskets of the season last year were throw the ball to a guy (David McCormack) and have him make a four-footer. And right now we don’t consistently do that at all.”
I am in unbearable pain.
Posted some stuff about the 5 spot in the scrimmage thread.
@RockChalkinTexas said in KU's Secret Scrimmage:
Any updates?
We "sucked" but also it was pretty much dead even with another ranked team.
Some other notes...
Cam started instead of Gradey. Motivational tactic for Gradey, Cam was not good at all.
MJ is behind Joe on the depth chart.
Bobby was able to play which is good because his health has been a concern.
Spacing is a concern.
Used a small ball line-up with Kevin at the 4 and Jalen at the 5. Juan, Bob and Joe were the guards, this was effective.
Big situation is not great and the biggest area of concern next to three point shooting. As of now sounds like Zach/KJ are the top 2 guys with Zuby third.
“He’s unbelievably athletic,” Self told The Almanac this offseason. “Style-wise, we can use him similar to how Golden State uses Draymond.”
KJ ^
