We see incoming freshman inflate rankings all the time. No doubt it's benefited KU in the past. Voting this early tends to be a crapshoot at times
Out of the Top 10 Duke has to be the most overrated don't they? They only have 10 scholarship players. One of their prized freshman has an injury. No one returned that averaged 10ppg. Good grief voters.
Baylor at 8 is high considering all they lost. Good recruiting class + a good transfer to keep them competitive. If they are a Top 10 team then Drew has just built a winning culture all of a sudden.
Hard to make an early judgement on so many of these teams with the roster turnover that's occurring
Duke & Kentucky fans crying "why can't our 28 five-stars get us ranked higher".
Gonzaga #1 (55 first place votes), UCLA #2 (8 first place votes), KU, Nova, Texas, Michigan, Purdue, Baylor, Duke, Kentucky round out the Top 10.
No other Big-12 teams made the Top 25. Michigan St- is ranked #26 (KU's first matchup)
Discuss..
Hopefully Dave can play about 25-27 minutes a game and more in big games. Keeping out of foul trouble was an issue for him later in the season. I definitely see this as one of the bigger things to watch because of how much of a drop off there's likely to be to the next guy. Maybe Cam surprises us making the jump to D-1.

I don't expect he does. Recruiting 5 star types now is a complete crap shoot
He's tied to some people that were involved with other kids that committed to college and then skipped for the G League. Huge part of why NC State backed off.
Agree I saw this as well somewhere else. It was a gamble taking his commitment but I think for recruiting purposes it was beneficial to have a 5 star type player as the headliner at least until he really decides what he's doing. Sounds as if him working on his body (getting more lean) & working on some parts of his game (jump shot) has him looking like a potential g-league/prof option after the upcoming year. If all else fails then he goes to KU I guess for a year.
Now I saw some of his first and 3rd games that showed him playing better then I saw against Virginia Gold. Saw that he averaged 21.3 ppg during that tourney that had lots of talent there. He's definitely a physically imposing player at this level. KU would benefit getting him for sure. He's in that mold of Henry/Oubre/Wiggins/Selden esque wings that come here and produce as freshman. We'll see what happens.

I did not see anything to get excited about.
I heard lately he had been on an ascendancy. I'll dm you some stuff.
Virginia Gold looked loaded and Prolific looked a lot less talented as a team but MJ did not back up any part of his ranking against them

Seen crazier but this seems like a check the boxes visit
I didn't mention the Hunter Mickelson, Sam Cunliffe, Dwight Coleby, Mario Little's of the world. Transfers are hit and miss as you noted. I think Remy and Yesufu were great additions from the portal and will prove to be the exceptions. Remy with 4 years proven in the Pac-12, torched KU once. Yesufu was so fun to watch in the NCAA tournament and torched USC, a team that made us look like a bunch of 8th graders. He's got some Moxy to him that I'm excited to see how it all fits here.
Agree on Dedric. He was statistically really good but for me underwhelmed in many areas I thought he'd excel at here. That was a weird squad. The injury to Doke & the drama with Vick ruined a lot of it.
The experience edge this team has will lead to better results. 4 starters, 2 rotation guys + 4 transfers. 10 deep before a freshman. Last years squad didn't have any of that. Guys were put in situations they weren't used to. Some guys played that shouldn't have but necessity ruled. While there's some chemistry to build with this squad, the talent is there, the experience is there to be a much improved team, which should lead to a team that can possibly cut down the nets.
We had the Lawsons too, one worked out well. Tarik Black, Kevin Young other successes.
I think the best 5 is Remy, Yesufu, Agbaji, Wilson, Dave. I think we'll see Harris, Remy, Agbaji, Wilson, Dave though. CB depending on how Self see's it all fitting.
It will be interesting to see how Remy meshes his style with Self. I think that's something to monitor. Same with Yesufu, those two guys can go make a play that isn't scripted. I really hope those two have the freedom to create because last year we saw the worst offense in the Self era out there. Harris is in year 3 in the program and we'll see what leap he's made in his game. Pettiford is waiting in the wings. The backcourt positions should be in good hands. If anything Self has options which in the past several years he hasn't really had. I'm glad they hit recruiting hard on that front.

@BShark Yeah, Arkansas is bigtime digging deep. What is that, two top 20 recruits and counting?
Yep, 5 in the Top 100 overall
I agree we'll add a transfer or two to get more experience on the team. I expect to see up to 7 spots available. 4 definite leaving, McCormack, Ochai have another year but I don't expect that happens. Wilson is the wildcard. Hopefully KU can make a good deal for him to stick around. He would likely be the leader of that team.
I really can't wait to see what Yesufu & Coleman-Lands bring to the table. If they are consistent upgrades over Thompson & Enaruna/Grant-Foster its a win. I have no idea what we are getting in Cam Martin but I hope his stretch shooting ability translates and he can at least defend at an average level.

Damn that sucks but Udeh is a nice conso prize I suppose
Got the player we need, though Walsh would have been an elite swap for Jalen assuming Jalen leaves as expected.
Agree Udeh is a bigger need and likely a guy the staff can depend to develop here for a while.
I hear you regarding Braun, he was easy to like as a freshman. I think last yr he played out of position and didn't have the pieces around him to mask his weaknesses. He showed flashes but rarely was consistent. It's year 3 so hopefully he's taken a step forward. His shooting was what disappointed me the most. I think that went hand in hand with playing a ton more minutes. He wasn't the most highly recruited/sought after player in High School so there's the question whether he was ready to produce at the level we expect as a sophomore. We will find out if KU development pays off like it usually does in yr 3 and 4

I'm optimistic and guarded about this team. The preseason polls will likely have them in the top 5. I can see 8 starter level players on this team. I think 2 others Lightfoot/Cam Martin will have roles and we'll need someone to be the backup 5 on a regular basis. Different guys bring something different to the table. I believe at least 1 freshman will find some minutes (Pettiford, Adams, Clemence). Its potentially a very deep team capable of absorbing someone slumping, an injury etc that always happens. I see the potential for this to be a much improved team no doubt. They have options at PG now, there's quality depth at Guard/Wing & enough core players back to expect better results this year.
What I'm waiting to see is who takes this team over and is the leader. Who is the guy everyone looks to? Who's going to be the go-to player on offense. Will we have 3-4 legitimate weapons everytime down the court? Will this team defend well enough? So many questions.
As optimistic about this team as I am I look back at last year and I wonder what the ceiling of those that came back (Dave, Braun, Jalen, Ochai, Jaun) will be with another year. I've been of the opinion that none of these guys would start on a number of KU's best teams in the Self era. Maybe you could make the case for someone overall but these guys haven't shown to be as good overall as many of KU's best in the past. It's not a knock, its just my opinion. College Basketball looks really good this year and I expect to see better teams and more depth. I really hope some guys took that next step, hopefully all of them did. Hopefully Remy Martin is the answer in the backcourt and the pieces all fit together. I think the potential and the ceiling is higher with this squad then last years. Hopefully a jam packed Allen Fieldhouse makes a difference.
Bobi Klintman getting CB's to Maryland. Guess Self passed him along to Mark
The IARP timeline was posted yesterday. Riveting transparency into the case.
Good 3-4 yr guy. I'm thinking like Dave just from what I see. Not a bouncy athlete but a heck of mountain inside
Fiercely contested dolla dolla bill battle
Roll tide
What's so wrong about this? A High Profile Head Coach dancing with a girl that's not his wife that's half his age? Oh the horror. And yes I'm kidding
My exacta thoughts.
Certainly would be an ideal replacement for Jalen Wilson.
Jordan Walsh on KU
Kansas: "I talk to Kurtis Townsend. Kansas has always been my dream school and I want to visit to get a feel for their culture. Bill Self is obviously a legendary coach. There is a lot of history there and I want to be around that to see what it feels like."
Now a Composite 5 star. ESPN recently made him the 7th best prospect. Will Visit KU this month.
Has visited Texas (I believe they are the favorite for him), Arizona St, Memphis with Arkansas still in it. KU could be his final visit.. Let's see where this one goes. Would make KU the #2 class in the country with Walsh aboard.
Cuffe is a definite red-shirt candidate especially with the knee surgery setting him back even further. He missed his entire Jr year due to Covid-19 and reclassified down a year to Join KU this year. He's just going to need the year to acclimate, get healthy and develop.
I don't think you see another shirt. Adams & Clemence are in play for backup minutes to some extent. Pettiford looks like he's in the mix for some minutes and with the lighter then usual non-conference schedule you want him to get some in-game experience.
One thing I'll be interested to see if Rothstein is correct, he mentioned team speed is improved from last season. I'd hope so with this roster
Certainly sounds like Pettiford will have a role as a freshman.
John Rothstein also went to a KU practice a few days ago. Tweeting about the palpable hype regarding Harris. Also mentioned this team could be 10 deep (we know that's unlikely with how Self operates). Mentioned Martin possibly being able to play off the ball. Mentioned the shooting abilities of Martin and Coleman-Lands. But your right Self talking about Harris certainly is helping drive it.
Would be intriguing to see Harris/Martin on the court at the same time. I absolutely prefer two guards to playing the Braun/Agbaji combo again a majority of minutes.
Udeh would make sense. High 4 star with upside. Certainly not a OAD from all the video I've seen.

Oh
Yeah came here to drop Slater's bomb.. That's going to be interesting to follow. After his gif regarding Traore its Bona/Udeh I'm guessing
I inquired about him since my buddy coaches at Brewster. A lot of interest for him and he's entertaining just about all of it. There is mutual interest from what he can read about what Matas is saying
There seems to be a lot less actual coverage of KU these days as well. No insiders giving scoop about players. There was some twitter hype about Harris being a "standout from the offseason". Unless that means he can shoot the ball and will now score I see no reason to get overly excited about that.
Self seems to like the group he's assembled but doesn't know how its all going to fit together.
Remy Martin has been hurt so that's slowed him down. Need to keep him healthy to be a Top 5 team

They gave a timeline for a timeline. Only the NCAA.. I certainly get the sense whenever they do release whatever its going to be a huge distraction to the team.
Agree and probably even a bigger one to recruits
Yeah recruiting has been impacted for several years now. This 22 class has been much better then others but even if they sign all 3 there's nothing guaranteed with what's looming. Expect the worst, be happy if its not as bad as we think it could be.

Traore taking an official to KU this weekend. Courtesy visit for being the first offer? prolly
Yeah I agree but we've seen crazier happen after a season.
Clemence and Cam are definitely the type of stretch bigs we haven't seen much of in the Self Era.
Losing Lightfoot & Martin for sure. Dave will have the option to come back but I wouldn't call it likely if he has a big season. Wilson is a 50/50 call at this time too.
Clemence & Adams are left. Zuby is committed.
3 definitely, 4 or 5 possibly if things "worked out". Could be crowded or attractive for a high level transfer/available HS big. Have to think experienced Vet given how young the 3 will still be.

staying healthy particularly its big men.
This is a key, Dave will need to stay healthy. This team has a lot of guard depth, post depth is um, interesting. Sounds like Cam is going to end up the back-up 5.
Keeping Remy & Dave healthy is the biggest worry I have. Post depth behind Dave is not good. Cam is unproven at this level & you have freshman and Mitch after that. Hopefully Cam can be serviceable enough.
Hopefully the guard play is the biggest difference this year. There are no shortage of options
Hard to tell. It's a talented roster with more depth so the potential is there. On paper its a good looking team but as always the biggest issue this team faces every year is staying healthy particularly its big men.
Getting Remy Martin via transfer & getting Agbaji & Wilson back certainly raised the ceiling significantly.
Martin is a very good College Player and might be the best returning scoring guard in the country. Agbaji averaged 14 a game, probably his ceiling but with Dave you have 3 legitimate go-to options. You could say KU has 4 if you add in a more consistent Jalen Wilson to the equation. The wildcard I'm so interested in seeing is how good Yesufu is, the transfer from Drake. He was dynamic in the NCAA tournament and really could be that 5th guy that makes KU very difficult to guard night in and night out
4 star forward Justin McBride down to 4 including KU
Oh for sure I put the odds of him coming here 0% before the visit and 0% leaving. Would love to be wrong
