It's been a long week but I realized around Tuesday I needed this break in the action. I barely slept going into Sunday and barely slept Sunday night for work on Monday. That's how much of an emotional roller coaster the game and win was. 2012 was a long time ago (at least it felt that way) so I had forgot what this joy of making the big stage felt like. I'm enjoying all of it and absolutely can keep soaking it in until Saturday Night. If the game goes as planned I expect to be running on adrenaline until who knows when, I might just have to take a few personal days next week to take it all in.

@BeddieKU23

I’d like to know:

  1. Can Silvio play out along the perimeter with their 5 (who likes threes), or do we need Mitch?

  2. Will Graham be effective against Brunson on both sides of the ball?

  3. Do we surrender athleticism to anyone else besides Bridges?

  1. I would still prefer to put a guard on Spellman- with Svi but if its going to be a big I think we just roll the dice and adjust if needed to during the game. Spellman is a big dude, he's not a bean pole like Bagley but Spellman for the most part has made his biggest impact in their offense shooting the 3. He can put the ball on the floor if defenders bail out to contest a shot as he'll use a pump fake and has decent handles for a guy his size.

This is a tough matchup. I believe Self will go with Doke and Silvio/or Mitch on him and hope shots don't fall or we have enough secondary help to limit his opportunities. If we take the last two games as any indication of how KU handles a pick and pop 4/5 man Skara/Donnal & Carter were left on an Island multiple times from what I remember. Spellman however is a better shooter then both of them so the %'s make it difficult to leave him open. If we respect his shot too much Nova has some advantages trying to take our guys 1 on 1 downhill without help.

I think Self is going to gameplan on offense to get him in foul trouble though. This could be an interesting development. We are worried that Doke will again foul himself out of stretches of this game but getting Spellman on the bench could absolutely change the game in KU's favor. If they have to use Crosby-Roundtree for stretches he's giving up 70 pounds to Doke and if they switch Paschall onto him Doke again has a favorable matchup. That would put CR on Svi which then creates a potentially big advantage.

  1. Tough question. I would say Graham can only be stopped by himself on offense. It's been rather impressive seeing the transformation he's made over the course of the season as a point guard and leader. Brunson is a solid defender but Graham has a quickness edge against him that I hope he's able to use. Brunson is averaging 3 fouls a game in his last 3 so maybe Devonte is able to bait him into some cheap fouls. Devonte really hasn't played great on offense this entire tournament. He carried us against Penn but that was more about the first half. Since then he's been a sidekick to the Newman show which isn't a bad thing. It's kind of created this dynamic where Devonte doesn't have to do it all on his own.

Defensively I think Brunson has an advantage. There isn't a guard that can stop his old man back you down game. This is where I'm worried about fouls. Brunson has these "bait you" moves that he's crafted. He can rise up over you and make a difficult mid-range or 8 footer. I just hope Devonte or whoever gets his assignment makes the shots difficult without fouling. We can live with Brunson having a big game as two of his bigger games on the year scoring wise Villanova lost. He's a big time player who I have a ton of respect for.

  1. DiVincenzo is the other x factor athlete. In the Texas Tech game he had a few dunks, one off the bounce and a put back slam off a missed three that were big time plays. He's deceptively bouncy, not like a Vick that has that gliding athletic ability and can rise up really high. DiVincenzo I thought made the plays that kept momentum alive for them in a game that was downright hard to watch offensively. Vick can match him but I'd imagine its either Malik or Devonte that gets him when he's in the game.

Nice post. I think coaching has helped push Newman where he is as well. This is everything clicking at the right time for KU. I Imagine the coaches have spent a lot of time to get guys into the roles they are now. Malik was being touted big time by Self in the offseason and that certainly felt like an aberration for a while but now we've seen the benefits of sticking with it and continuing to fight for the best out of Newman and the team.

Arizona looked like a YMCA club down there this year. It's just unbelievable how different the setting is for them. Atlantis is awesome and I'm shocked they haven't put the money in for something new given how big this tournament is for them down there. I was down there months before it was happening a few years back and I saw a ton of advertising around for it. I fail to see the long term benefit of keeping it where it is when they can build something bigger that can draw in a bigger audience.

I worry about who will be the team leaders as well. I also think this could be good for us in a way. You have a lot of new pieces that can form their own identity and figure it out on their own. We've been fortunate enough to pass the baton on so to speak to guys waiting in the wings but I don't think that option exists unless Doke returns. He's got some fight to him. We'll see I expect Dedric to be a vocal piece next season

How should Jay attack the find a way boys? • Mar 29, 2018 01:58 PM

@BigBad

It could happen, Bridges is their best defender from what I've seen all year long. His wingspan and size makes it difficult. Villanova switches 1-4, which is what KU does so there could be times he's covering him even if its not his primary assignment

I think Bridges is more likely to guard Newman because of the hot streak he's on. That feels like the matchup Nova wants to limit the most you would think. I don't know though, Malik is playing at a level that is hard to stop no matter who's defending him. And KU certainly does a great job putting him in catch and shoot & driving situations that have made the game easier for him. At this point I think the only man that can stop Newman is himself.

@BeddieKU23 So I get that it's an allstar game but Quickley and Quinerly were very meh to me. Dotson and Garland clearly better.

Cam Reddish is way more Wiggins than he is JJ with the overall talent of neither, if you catch my driiiift.

I was pleasantly surprised with McCormack. Even compared to earlier this season it looks like he has done work on his body. He should get along real well with Hudy. I would expect him to be a 4 year player as well.

Langford looked fantastic last night. At this point I expect Newman and Vick to go pro, so hopefully the team ends up with Langford. He is a next level type player.

Both Q's will be fine. For Kentucky's Q that one is going to have to understand he's not a OAD..

Nova's Q will turn into a really solid guard for them. Zero chance that Wright doesn't make him a pain in the A by his Jr year.

Not a fan of Reddish but it will help him that he can be a sidekick to Barrett & Zion. Still not seeing what has Tre Jones so high but the hype between Duke and his brother has him there.

McCormack definitely looks like he's earned his stripes. If a kid can on his own change his body and become better I can't imagine what 4 years under Self and Hudy will do further for him. He picked the best school for his future.

Nassir Little is a stud. I don't know what Roy will do with a talent like that but they stole one. White is Berry 2.0 in so many ways its scary. Roy's next 4 year Burger Boy.

I've become a big fan of Romeo's game since KU's interest picked up in him. This kid scored 3000 points in High School. I was having a hard time trying to figure out who he compares to, the best I could come up with was a combination of Jayson Tatum & Kelly Oubre. The game just comes so easy for him but a coach like Self could absolutely push him for more. He'd excel in that wing role here where he can score from the perimeter, get to the hoop, be our next lob man and be great on the defensive boards. Carbon copy fit here.

McDonald's All American Week Events • Mar 29, 2018 01:18 PM

Thoughts from the game:

Dotson is the quickest guard in the class. Absolute blur. Will have to learn to harness that at times but in a transition situation good luck stopping him.

Grimes played well. Showed off the deep ball with an excellent stroke. I can easily see him being our best 3 point shooter on the team. Great size and all around skill that we've come to expect from him.

McCormack is a space eater. Not many teams have those and he plays hard. Someone we could have all 4 years. Excited.

Romeo looked very good as well. The size, athleticism and shooting ability all on display. TV heads spent a lot of time talking up him for Indiana and Vandy per usual. We'll see.

@betterfireE

Anything specific your looking for? I'm from the Northeast and have watched a ton of Villanova this year.

On the surface both of these teams are carbon copies of each other. They play 8 guys if they need too. However only 6 guys play a majority of minutes. They will use red-shirt freshman forward Crosby-Roundtree and freshman guard Gillespie outside of their 6th man (DiVincenzo) who is the best in the country IMO.

Villanova statistically has one of the best offenses in the past 15 years, they shoot a high % from the FT line as a team (78%), their defense is good enough although I disagree that its anything like the team from two years ago. I would simply put it as their defense was no better then KU's during the regular season but they've turned it up a notch in the tournament. The various statistical sites out there will tell you Nova's defense is significantly been better overall. They actually attempt more 3 pointers then we do thanks to starting 5 guys that all shoot the 3 within their offense.

The only major difference between the Nova team that lost in the 2nd round last year and the team we play Saturday is having their C Spellman eligible (he sat last season with academic issues) and a team that developed together over the past year returning a majority of their lineup. They rebound by committee, against Texas Tech all 7 guys who played double figure minutes had 4 rebounds or more. Fundamentally sound, they share the ball well just like KU so the similarities between both teams is easy to spot.

It's unique that their best low post player is actually their PG and POY finalists Brunson. He's methodical, crafty and can get his shot backing down anyone, even bigs. Not a great athlete but must be respected because he's perfected his craft. A very good 3 point shooter when left alone.

The biggest matchup issue for KU is Bridges IMO. Two years ago this kid made an impact on the Nova/KU Elite 8 game off the bench playing great defense and getting rebounds/offensive put-backs against us. He's now a bonafide 1st round pick in the upcoming draft as he's shown the ability to punish teams inside/out and also can be their go-to playmaker. He's a tough cover for us as the assignment likely goes to Vick who's given up size to Bridges. He's also an excellent defender who's going to make life difficult for someone. I hope we are able to be aggressive against him and possibly get him into foul trouble.

For me the key to beating Villanova will be pace and making shots. I look at two games this year, losses to Butler and Creighton as examples of teams that had excellent offenses that could exploit them in an up and down type of game.

KU's offense is better then both of those teams and we can run and score a lot of points when we have to. Now in a Final 4 setting with so much on the line and playing in a Dome I don't know if the flow will allow for a high 70's/low 80's type game but if KU is hitting shots early I would think its a good sign that we can push the pace into forcing them to make shots.

I hope KU's defense is able to force Nova into another bad shooting night as Texas Tech did last weekend. Villanova was very fortunate to win that game and a big part of that was getting 40% of their points at the FT line. Reading what Nova fans have said they are hoping their poor shooting game is out of the way. Maybe its a sign though that can be exploited again. I wonder if Self reached out to Huggins and Beard for some tips after Villanova beat both of those teams in the past week.

If there is anything else you want to know about Villanova let me know.

Booth is nursing that hand injury and has seen his shooting %'s go way down since it. Whoever guards him has the advantage.

Bridges is big time. This isn't guarding Grayson Allen if Newman or Vick draws the assignment. Bridges gave us fits 2 years ago and all he's done is turn himself into a 1st round pick.

Divincenzo is the matchup I'm most worried about. He was the one guy in the Tech game that had that "it" factor. Big fan of how he plays and can really hurt you in a lot of ways.

Brunson vs Graham is as good as it gets. 2 POY players going Head to Head. It's bound to bring out the best in both. They play completely different styles playing the same position.

Little has some serious bounce to him.

I think Barrett will show out in the game, kid plays hard and is so active. Nightmare to guard.

I haven't really been a big fan of Reddish but you see the prototypical size and potential that has him ranked so high.

If Big Dave is heavy footed Naz Reid makes him look like Superman. I agree though Dave will be someone Hudy can really help improve on certain aspects of his ability. I love that he already has this mentality to work and play hard and has changed his body up on his own.

Agree on Romeo and the other guards. Grimes has kind of blended in other settings like this. Will be interesting to see how he does in the games as he has this, Jordan and Nike Summit all coming up.

I think Barrett is the best of the Duke wing Cerberus and that it's not particularly close.

Much like Garrett was a guard pressed in the Self mint I feel like McCormack is a big that will please Self. The kind of player that plays more than portions of our fan base thinks he should. However there is just so much depth next year down low. Doke leaving would change everything though.

I don't think Grimes or Romeo are alphas. It's okay though because Dotson is extremely alpha. I think Dotson gets massive minutes next year. I'm not as sure on Grimes. I feel like he is a somewhat unique player and has a lot of good things that he does but I can see him getting in Self's dog house.

No question in my mind Barrett is better. If he had a perimeter shot that was consistent he would have ran away with the #1 spot. Looks bigger too.

I'm not worried about Grimes at all but you never know what to expect with Freshman until they get comfortable playing for Self. Can't wait to see him and Dotson build that Chemistry together this summer.

Agree on Dave. I think they recruited the right big for this class. Good already, can get even better over time. I think we'll see the staff mention over the years how much they like him as a person. Great mindset already to work with.

Garland surprised me a little so far and has looked a bit bigger to me then I remember.

Not going to take much from a practice setting where the play means nothing and there is zero incentive to play hard. It is however nice to see our Trio + possibly Romeo all in one setting. 18 class certainly looks a bit down compared to some others but I'm extremely pleased with what we got signed

Dotson is a true PG.

He might not have the measurable's of a typical OAD PG but he definitely has the chance to be really good here. I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time he's beaten Quinerly H2H and Jahvon is really good himself. I hope he stays around at least two seasons. It is unique for him though that there's no Mason or Graham in the wings so the opportunity to play big minutes as a freshman is there for him to be noticed by the NBA. I'm excited to see his defense here, he's every bit a ballhawk as Garrett was coming in. His ability to get to the rim and finish will also remind us of someone..

Final Four bound!!! • Mar 28, 2018 01:10 PM

We definitely need Doke to be disciplined out there on Saturday. He's been rather out of control this tournament with fouls.

If I was Jay Wright I would almost assume Doke is going to take himself out of the game without them having to do anything differently against him. If Doke somehow can stay in the game for long stretches without fouling then that's where Wright probably has to adjust. Doke I believe has only scored on 2-3 ISO plays this tournament between fouls and his knee. Spellman and Paschall are big dudes that can hold their own. They might not be able to stop Doke (but who can when he's on his game) so Nova will have to adjust to that if he's able to get inside position for easy baskets. I would imagine they will try and double him quickly on post entries or try and steal the ball when he backs his man down and goes for that right shoulder bunny. A very underrated aspect of Doke in the past month has been his passing and his awareness looking for cutters (most likely Vick or Garrett) when he receives the ball. That has been a positive addition to his game that really wasn't there earlier in the season. In High School I'm not even sure he knew how to pass the ball so he's made gigantic strides in that area.

One way KU can potentially use Doke's size advantage and keep Nova's defense from collapsing is having Svi or Newman always on the side Doke may post up on. That way Nova is unlikely to drop the guard down to double because you can't leave Svi or Newman open. This could give Doke room to operate 1 on 1 or if that guard collapses that leaves one of our deadly outside shooters open.

@BeddieKU23 On the other hand, Mitchell Robinson left WKY after attending only 2 weeks of summer school and was also granted a (grudging) release, but was not allowed to play anywhere immediately. (Apparently)

His situation is different because he went there even after his mentor asst coach was fired, and the head coach is obviously more central to players' choices. But, the NCAA has not been real sympathetic to multiple transfers in the past. Incidentally, @Kcmatt7 provided excellent analysis of this issue last August in the "2018 Recruiting" thread.

I think he sits out, gets yet another year of school for free, graduates, and transfers again!

We have definitely seen the NCAA make bizarre rulings in the past so nothing would surprise me.

I would say Mitchell Robinson wasn't the best comparison because he was a freshman with different circumstances.

The summer school detail makes this one different with him trying to leave WKU . Given that Braxton Beverley did the same thing (left Ohio St after Matta was fired but was enrolled in Summer School, transferred to NC St and applied for a waiver which he ultimately won after a few tries) I'm surprised Robinson didn't pursue this further. It makes me think other things were involved there with Robinson who certainly didn't seem to have a circle of people in his corner with his best intentions.

Martin however most likely transferred into Colorado St last year thinking he gets to play for Eustachy in 2018-19. He fulfills his requirement of sitting a year and at season's end his coach is fired for some detrimental conduct to his players etc.. Martin likely was apart of that so between the conduct and the coach being fired he might have a rather straight forward case here. They can also argue the 5 year window to play 4 would be violated if he was unable to play this season as he would have sat 2 years. A 6th year is usually only granted in medical waiver cases.

I'm assuming OU took him with the assumption he plays this year, they just might have to go through the red tape to get him..

@mayjay

I actually think he'll be eligible. He already transferred into Colorado St and sat a year without playing for them.

Then Colorado St fired their coach Larry Eustachy who we all know has a checkered past.

CSU intends to terminate the coach’s contract based on Eustachy violating the zero tolerance policy he previously received regarding his abusive behavior toward players and staff, according to the source, who has direct knowledge of the school’s current investigation.

Colorado St did fire Eustachy and Martin was given a full release.

I'm sure he'll have to apply for a waiver in this case but I can't see a kid being forced to sit 2 years for nothing. That's not fair either. In this case the nature of his coach being fired probably gives him a good chance to go somewhere else and play immediately

More Big-12 movement..

Brandon Averette leaving Oklahoma St.

Kris Martin transfers to Oklahoma from Colorado St. Sat out last season after transferring from Oral Roberts where as a Soph he made 73 3's. Will be interesting to see if he's eligible this season after already sitting out

Grimes shot 38% this year from 3. Surprisingly he wasn't a good FT shooter this year.. Whacky

Dotson can shoot it, just needs KU coaches to help him get up shots. I'd say Dotson compares to Duval in that their strengths are getting in the lane and making a play or finding an open man. Dotson however does have range on his shot. I expect he'll improve over time.

As @BigBad said Garrett will likely start next season. They have a lot of refinement to do on that shot especially from the FT line. That I can imagine will be his biggest off-season goal.

The Transfers- they can all make a 3 and you hope the year off gave them time to refine some things.

If Vick leaves we need Langford badly. Size, athletic, really good shooter and can get his own shot.
