I was thinking we better cancel the season now

KU tanking on the recruiting trail! • Feb 02, 2017 12:28 AM

@Statmachine

He's actually available for most of the season. He only sits 9 games.

You forgot Coleby as well

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 08:33 PM

I think we are definitely still the choice for Young. I'm confident because we absolutely know PG is a position of need, not a luxury. I'm usually pessimistic about recruits especially if the battle is against the hometown school but nothing has changed to the point where we should be overreacting. Until Matt Scott or Jerry Meyer relay some information saying otherwise we should be hopeful he's going to end up here

Excellent point!

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 08:07 PM

@Kcmatt7

We have a stud PG signed.. he's just a 2019 recruit. And we have stud 2018 PG Dotson coming in for a visit this weekend. We'll see if Mason's possible POY season has any effect on PG recruits, it surely can't hurt.

I expect that if Young doesn't come to KU that KU will continue to press Duval for whatever that is worth. The situation doesn't get any better for a recruit this year. Mason is gone, Graham is also likely gone. What else can we possibly sell a recruit who wants to play immediately..

Pace of the game… that will decide who wins tonight. That will decide which team shoots a high %, TO rate, etc.

I hope you are right!

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 07:39 PM

@Kcmatt7

Well when you spin it that way maybe so.

But I do disagree, K offered and all the momentum is that he'll end up at Duke. Duke needs him and that's really tough to beat in that situation.

Duke is likely to be a completely different team next year. No Allen, No Tatum, Kennard likely goes pro, Jeter has been rumored to be a transfer candidate. Bolden could be gone as well with how unhappy he is with his role. Giles also likely a OAD. Jones & Jefferson are Seniors. Duval can play with 2 very good freshman Carter & Trent and run the show with Jackson. Duke is very likely to be in Kentucky mode next year playing with a bunch of freshman and seldom used reserves.

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 07:22 PM

@drgnslayr

Baylor's starting 5 is made up 4th year players.

Lecomte is a player we might be able to speed up, he was horrible against West Virginia's pressure and this will be his first time in Allen. He's averaged over 3 turnovers in his last 4 games. That could be the key to stopping them.

I just hope our guys play free with passion and energy tonight. This seems like a can't miss game for KU to play its best.

We have to make perimeter shots and limit them from doing the same. Lecomte is their only legit consistent shooter from 3. Freeman is 5-21 in the last 5 games. Omot who is a 6'9 SF is a spot up shooter and has played a lot more lately and made 3 big one's in their comeback win over Ole Miss. I hope the crowd has an influence on their shooting.

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 07:10 PM

With how invested KU is in for Trae Young Duval wouldn't be a take even in the unimaginable situation where he wanted to commit today. Sounds weird but its true, the staff wants Young and Duval is the unlikely backup plan.

What's likely to happen is Young announces his commitment date and announces sometime in February. If its not KU, then KU will continue to recruit Duval and the fan-base will be freaking out yet again.

Meanwhile Duval continues to take visits. Remember he's essentially visiting KU and Baylor by going on his official to KU. Baylor being on his list gives him a chance to scout them as well tonight.
From what I understand from the Duke insiders Duval will be visiting Duke for his official soon, maybe even for the UNC game next Thursday. With how much Duke needs an immediate upgrade at PG its likely he's already made up his mind and is just enjoying his free visits while he can before the spring hits. If Coach K wants him, he's going there

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 06:58 PM

@StLJhawk

that prediction would help Mason's POY hopes. Another big time performance in a big game... He's down to 4 home games left, I hope he makes them count

Bill RE: Next Season • Feb 01, 2017 06:03 PM

@BShark

I imagine this will be the last we hear of him in that case

Bill RE: Next Season • Feb 01, 2017 06:02 PM

@BShark

Certainly, Walker's size alone would be a plus. Investing in a red-shirt these days is risky. Jerry Meyer just CB's him to St Johns yesterday btw

Bill RE: Next Season • Feb 01, 2017 05:58 PM

@BShark

Matt went a little overboard on use of freak athlete with Badocchi. Andrew Wiggins is a freak athlete, Badocchi is not.

Honestly we can do better than both but if I was choosing, Walker and red-shirt

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 05:42 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

So far can't find who's doing the game but with it being this big a game have to imagine its Fran and his new sidekick

In response to a twitter post asking why he wasn't in ISU, he said his wife threatened to kill him if he didn't come home

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 05:35 PM

@Kcmatt7

Iowa St has 2 Big's that are sitting this year. Ray Kasongo that has bounced schools from Juco to Tennesse to ISU. Can't be excited about a big that averaged 1 pt at Tenn but I'm sure he'll be improved as most transfers Iowa St take seem to be.

The other Cameron Lard was supposed to be apart of their rotation this year but had academic issues. They are sitting him so he still has 4 years of eligibility. He was a borderline Top 150 player with some skill. ISU will be a very active team for Juco or immediate transfer bigs.

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 05:30 PM

@ralster

probably because he's doing tonight's game

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 05:28 PM

@Fightsongwriter

If we play M2M, JJ on Motley is our only choice. I think we are going to have to play some heavy zone action here or shadow a wing off Wainright for the quick double when Motley gets the ball.

Honestly Motley is a huge mismatch for even Jackson. Jackson is a + defender but its different when your facing a 6'10 offensive machine. This is a matchup we need Jackson on the floor and not in foul trouble. Matching 2 guys that average 3 fouls a game a piece would seem to favor whoever can gain the advantage first. That's why if Jackson can leverage his quickness and draw fouls on Motley it will change the complexion of the game.

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 02:41 PM

@Kcmatt7

The biggest issue for Prohm this year is not having 1 post player. Losing that Malou guy to grades crushed their front-court. But I do agree in year 2 we are already seeing a major difference between Fred & Prohm.

Prohm will lose his entire starting 5 and his top returning scorer will be Nick Babb. Wigginton the incoming SG is a stud but the cupboard is bare at ISU. They are in full rebuild mode

@BShark

You don't believe that him being a Hawk fan will pull him here?

And we know Self isn't going to concede for an elite wing. We'll see lots of time

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 01:59 PM

@joeloveshawks

I'll take those odds as well! :sunglasses:

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 01:43 PM

@joeloveshawks

That is right, the average margin in the last 4 years in Allen is 16 points.

I don't think we can rely on that statistic going into tonight. Baylor is so much better then the previous 4 teams that have come into Allen.

I still expect us to win but the significance of this game is off the charts for both teams and that's what will make it a close game

@BShark

Seems like a lot of perimeter talent we are after right now.

I would still take Barrett over any of these wings. RJ is an elite talent.

Leech is really good but will have to step up his level of competition this summer. I can't imagine we would let him elsewhere if he wanted in.

Brown seems like the type that will end up in the top 20 and have his choice of any program. He has ties to South Carolina and being from a small town and 2o minutes to campus Frank Martin will do his best to keep him home. I like his ability and he might still get bigger which could make him a perfect stretch 4 type.

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 12:28 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

It's critical KU wins tonight. KU has the most road games remaining in all of the league. 3 of them as you noted are well known places KU loses.

Winning against West Virginia at home is the other critical game because West Virginia's schedule the rest of the way is extremely favorable to them.

The next 6 games or 17 days will decide the conference for KU.

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 11:39 AM

@RockChalkinTexas

I imagine Frank will be on Lecomte as we will need to use Graham's size to cover Freeman. If we mix up defenses again it will be a mute point.

of course Vick is playing. That was a straight up TMZ report

Stud Sophomore Christian Brown who has a KU offer had this to say in a recent interview.

Who are some guys on the NBA level or college level that you always looked up to?

Josh Jackson. The people at Kansas told me I play just like him. I look up to him.

KU is recruiting him, all the heavy hitters will be on him especially being from South Carolina.
The 19 class really has some serious talent. And that's forgetting RJ Barrett the best player in the class who idolizes Andrew Wiggins..

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 11:03 AM

Biggest game of the year by far tonight.

Scott Drew jokes, jabs whatever else aside this is the best team KU will face all year before the tournament (and possibly all year). Put away all your perceptions of Baylor, they are in fact as good a team as KU or better. When was the last time that was ever possible...Never.

So how does KU win tonight?

Baylor plays that Zone but they have actually played more M2M then I've ever seen.

Baylor plays at one of the slowest paces in all of College Basketball and rebounds the ball extremely well.

That means KU will have to win the slow game. If KU could force a lot of turnovers as WVU did that would really help change the dynamic of the game. If KU doesn't force turnovers its going to be a long night.

My biggest question for tonight is who guards Jonathan Motley?

The answer is nobody if your wondering. We don't have anyone who can match up with him. We will see a lot of double teams which means rotations will have to be strong. Coleby will have to be used for his fouls, but the problem is Motley makes his FT's. The only real weakness for Motley is that he is foul prone. The key for KU would be to get him into foul trouble in the first half.

Their other big, Jo-Lual Acuil Jr is the best shot-blocker in the Big-12 and maybe the country. At just under 3 blocks a game he is the biggest reason Baylor has been a stingy defensive team all season.

Having said all that I truly hope that the gym is rocking tonight to help this team get the W.

KU will need to make perimeter shots, make shots in general, limit turnovers and try and rebound at an even pace tonight. The margin for error is slim with a team like Baylor who doesn't push the pace and is able to win games with its defense. This is a true test for KU's offense and 4 guard set.

Let's get this W!!!

@Fightsongwriter

I do believe Self is waiting until seasons end. He did the same thing with Greene. It gives both parties clarity and the chance to reflect on the situation. It would be a shock if he was back next year.

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 10:39 AM

Watched the WVU-ISU game. So it is true, ISU only cares about basketball when KU comes to town. I thought it was a terrible crowd that fed into their defeat. Not that the team is any good because they clearly couldn't stop a cold. Just wanted to dig at what is supposed to be such an intimidating home court advantage. That's a game Iowa St should have held serve at home.

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 10:37 AM

@truehawk93

Ayton was a big miss and I do feel strongly that Nike influence pushed him to Arizona but its over now. Arizona is a top program and the kid in the end choose the top school close to home. While it was a shock and maddening at the time, what can we do? Self did all he could and I'm sure there is more to this recruitment then will ever be brought to light.

The comparison to Tarc is not a good one. What about current freshman Lauri Markannen or Aaron Gordon, guys that are of similar ability to Ayton. Ayton will be in the NBA regardless of whether he goes to College or not, the same can be said for the above two players. Markannen is far away the best freshman big in College Basketball. Tarc while a higher ranked player coming out of High School had similar career stats as Landen Lucas. I'm glad we missed on Tarc, he didn't pan out as advertised.

BAYLOR BEARS -WEDNESDAY - 8 P.M. - ESPN2 • Jan 31, 2017 07:12 PM

@jayballer54

Kenpom has Baylor as the 5th best defensive team in the nation. FYI West Virginia for all its vaunted press is only ranked #11 and Kentucky is #12. KU at #30.

Offensively KU has been holding steady at #5 in the nation while Baylor is #20. Something will give in this game and hopefully its Baylor defense. KU has to play as smart offensively as they have all year. Baylor has 3 guys with crazy wingspans starting.

@BShark

Very true about Sherfield he's been talked about longer. Jacobs really got onto the radar once KU snagged him. Hopefully Jacobs will run with a good AAU team this summer.

Comparing the 2, Sherfield is the better shooter at this stage. Jacobs is far an above the better athlete and is so quick that I have to think he'll end up being the better 2 way player (if I was making a judgement of current ability). Plus you just never know how kids will react to getting the right offer like Jacobs got and took without question. With Sherfield he's going to be a typical kid that soaks in being recruited by top programs as we've seen KU isn't the only top one after him now.

Trae Young • Jan 31, 2017 06:57 PM

@BShark

Good for him, honestly that is a kid that could have easily ended up in jail for a long time. I remember his back story being really tough, grew up in a really poor/low income area in Florida. Was surrounded by a lot of bad stuff.

@BShark

Its hard to project that far ahead but the athletic ability of Jacobs is hard to deny and being a Chicago kid there has to be a sense that maybe they are just higher on Markese. Sherfield is very good and has localish ties but there is no denying Jacobs might just be a better player when its all said and done. We may still land Sherfield anyway based on need and roster availability.

I wish all the 19 kids were in the 18 class because it just seems like a can't miss load up of prospects for KU.

It is unusual for us to lock in a player 2 + years from coming to campus, at least its a good one!

Trae Young • Jan 31, 2017 06:51 PM

@BShark

Chris Walker, a kid that just had a terrible upbringing and made bad decisions all along the way. I wonder where he is now, kid had a lot of potential that got wasted.. I thought that was some crazy insight he shared

Trae Young • Jan 31, 2017 06:48 PM

@BShark

Yes he does a thankless job really.

A side note, I expected the craziness to come especially as his decision appears to be coming soon. It's funny how much peoples opinion's change in an instance with zero credible information to back it up. I do hope he makes the visit this weekend as was talked about.. If he doesn't well he really will be throwing fans for a loop.

Trae Young • Jan 31, 2017 06:44 PM

@BShark

Knowing that Matt Scott will basically let 247 know when something is going down because of his relationship with the family I'm confident until something changes. We may have our opinions of Matt but in this case there is no person closer to the situation for KU..

@BShark

We will like this kid while he's on campus
