NC State with 10 FTAs to our zero. Lucky they can't make them.
No FTAs yet. We simply are allergic to drawing contact and getting to the line...
@BeddieKU23 So, just posing the question - why wouldn't it take even much more time to gel at UK, with both portal additions and a new coach???
Stunning that Coit - almost a portal afterthought - starts, get 26 minutes and 14 points. Our two marquee portal pickups - 2-9 combined for 5 points; toss in 3 TOs, 6 fouls and zero assists...
This is matching the infamous YMCA game...
Apart from the weak-ass TOs, they are constantly attacking the rim. We are allergic to doing so...
We have to be the softest team in D-1...
16 - 5 in FTA. That's the biggest difference right now...
Their spacing is so much better than ours...
14 TOs and 6 made buckets....
Tigers gave up 93 points to Cal last game...
The one thing we have been doing well all season, even in the Creighton loss, it taking care of the ball - until now...
@DanR But that wasn't one...
@kjayhawks other than lazily around the perimeter...
@patoh3 We haven't been able to do that much the first 8 games...
Continuing pattern - not drawing any fouls and getting to the FT line...
@patoh3 They didn't go back up strong - esp. KJ. Leaned back and just threw one up...
Everyone must be watching the Hero World Golf Challenge... ;)
@Texas-Hawk-10 So, BYU tied for the conference title and didn't get into the title game because of a complicated tiebreaker. Clemson was in its conference title game. Regardless, if quality of losses is more important than actually beating anyone of consequence (?), then how do you justify Alabama, with losses to Vandy and OU (a spank down by the latter).
No consistency in applying a "standard"...
What escapes me is why Penn State is definitely in and SMU may be left out. They have the same overall record. Both played in the conference championship and lost relatively close games. Only other loss for both was a close game to a ranked team (both SMU losses by 3 points). Questions about SMU's strength of schedule, but who has Penn State actually beaten. Penn State's only good win was 21-7 over a 9-3 Illinois team. Only other wins against teams with winning records are 7-5 Bowling Green and 7-5 Minnesota. Just two against a P-5 school. SMU has wins over a 9-3 team, two with 8-4 records, and two with 7-5 records. All P-5 wins. And, don't get me started on Indiana. They benefited from not qualifying for the conference championship. Patsy non-conference and conference schedule. Didn't play Oregon, PSU, Illinois or Iowa. Only win over a team with a winning record was 7-5 Michigan...

They sagged off on the pick and roll and dared our guards to shoot tough floaters/contested layups over length.
They basically took Hunt out of the game with this too.
Bill will get that fixed. This is also where Rylan and Storr will learn these are their games to shine. They are basically giving you a free driving lane right at the big man, and if they just go up strong itβs and easy bucket/foul.
This was a game you pencil in as a loss to start the season. Not concerned at all yet
The issue with our guys is "just going up strong" to get a bucket or at least draw a foul. For reasons that escape me, our guys seem to be unwilling or incapable of doing that - a recurrent theme and not just this year. Juan had a dozen drives toward the rim - ZERO FT attempts. He always leans away from contact. Given the length of Kalkenbrenner, not suprising that he was the 3-12 on 2pt attempts. More frustrating is that KJ does the same. Go back and watch his drives - he does not drive into the body of the defender to draw contact. Also leans away from contact and throws up the ball. 2-6 on 2pt attempts and also ZERO FT attempts.
Eight FT attempts on 70 shot attempts - hard to comprehend. And, that is not simply bad officiating or getting jobbed on the road... We had half the FTAs as Furman at home, about half as many as UNC at home, significantly fewer than UNCW at home...
It's one thing to lose to a good team on the road, but they basically dominated. 10pts combined from Hunt and KJ. Like that Juan has been looking to score more, but 21 shot attempts!?
Their top 3 scorers have outscored our entire team...
Respectable 40% from 3. But, 14-42 from 2 is not....

Well the refs just gave a us a huge kick in the nutts.--- If you can't steal a teams Momentum one way by golly we will another way screw those idiots
So, I'm not defending the calls or lack thereof, but there is a season long pattern. We have one FT attempt this game. We are not consistently not getting to the FT line - home, neutral courts, or now on the road.
3 fouls on KJ in 3 minutes...
So, regardless of how this game ends, there probably needs to be a reality check on the season to date. KU's marquee wins are looking a bit less glossy...UNC is just 4-4 and just got whipped on their home court by a 2 loss Alabama team. We held on to edge UNC at home. Duke and MSU each have two losses. Auburn is rolling Duke early.
The first half of this game? Mayo is the only one who is playing like he belongs on the court. Creighton dominating on the boards. Shooting 50%+ Storr??? 1-4; 2 pts and 1 RB. KJ and Hunter much the same.
SEC steamrolled ACC - 9-1 in those matchups last night...

League getting embarrassed so far tonight.
Alas, it's not just tonight. Sadly, the B12 has WAY under-performed rankings and expectations through this week. Tonight, it's not just a ranked (shouldn't have been) Cincinnati team losing to 5-4 Villanova. Or BYU down big to Providence at half. Or ASU down to San Diego (NOT San Diego State).
Arizona has 4 losses; Houston 3. KU is the only undefeated team. The B12 has a loosing record against ranked teams. I'm not a fan of the SEC, but it is 11-6 against AP ranked teams.
The B12 has been the strongest conference top to bottom the past several years - that isn't the case this year...

I thought Hunter would have come out with much more energy after getting bounced last game. Not so much; I'm disappointed with his play
And, more disappointing is AJ. Getting the start, but only 2 pts and no RBs...

But the difference from a year ago is that we don't have to rely on him scoring...
Mixed bag. We're fortunate they missed a lot of wide open 3s - just don't understand why we struggle to guard the arc against a team that relies on taking a lot of 3 pt shots. Perhaps they are fortunate that we couldn't any shots from the arc - 0-6. Another recurring issue - not getting to the FT line, esp. at home. Do love KJ energy on both ends.
Reaching the end of Feast Week, the SEC has clearly established itself at the strongest conference at this point. B12 at best 2nd, maybe 3rd behind the B10. B12 has a losing record against ranked teams. SEC is 11-5. 7 undefeated teams. Have won almost of the matchups with B12. Hawks will stay #1 after beating Duke, but Auburn has been the most dominant team thus far, with an even more impressive slate of wins - UNC, Iowa St., Houston and Memphis.

BIG 12 looking strong early. League teams only have two losses and both losses are to ranked teams. Of course Baylor got whooped, but then beat Arkansas. Got quite a few wins against ranked teams already.
B12 has a gaudy record with only the 2 losses, but only 4 teams have played a decent foe - virtually no Power 5 opponents. Basically, the B12 is 3-2 against ranked teams - wins against UNC, Arkansas and TA&M - losses to Gonzaga and Auburn...
So, the B12 is NOT looking so strong a week or so later. 5 undefeated teams, but only the Hawks have played a P5 team. 11 non-conferences losses, only a couple of bad ones, but only KU, Baylor and UCF have wins against a P5 opponent.
They have 12 more points from the FT line - at home. This a recurring issue and is going to be a big problem against better competition. Also not being able to extend leads and put away games. 20 pt lead down to 12...
Another double-double for Hunt...
11 Hawks have scored and we're not yet in garbage time. Since when has that happened???
Our two biggest portal gets have a been a big disappointment so far. Griffen and Storr combined have 8 pts on 3-9 shooting and 1 RB and 1 assist...
They have an 8 pt advantage at the FT line...
5-20 from 3...
Can't have our primary ballhandler shooting 33% from the stripe...
@DanR said in UNCW Game Thread:
Griffen doesn't look like a good rebounder either. Sigh.
Has exactly ZERO boards this game...
Remarkable 18-23 on 2pt attempts...
15-20 on 2pt shot attempts...
So, that was a classic example of KJ not getting position for a defensive rebound...
Big early rebound advantage has disappeared...
Well, we have balanced scoring - 9 players have scored, none with more than 6 pts...
We're fortunate they are shooting FTs as poorly as we do...
