@approxinfinity Systemic alienation of white Americans?

Wow.

If you don’t think a lot of working class and poor whites have felt alienated, read Chris Arnade’s book Dignity or JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. Or if you have working class family, talk to them too. Whether or not you think it’s warranted a lot of working class and poor whites feel ignored by both parties. They feel Republicans only appeal to rich folks and Democrats only appeal to urban minorities. It’s one of the reasons why deaths of despair among whites skyrocketed pre-covid.

To me, Kamala is the Marco Rubio of the Democratic Party. She’ll say and do anything to get power, and not too concerned with the constraints of our system. See one of the D debates on how she just throws out there that she’ll make policy via executive order and her ideas are more important than the Constitution (if they weren’t she’d say she’d follow it, not burn it down). I’d be more sympathetic if she wasn’t so obvious about it. Hard to square her support for all these in Vogue racial justice items if she hadn’t spent a large part of her career locking up minorities and abusing their civil rights ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The Big 12 released their conference schedule this morning. Games will begin on Sept. 26 and conclude on Dec. 5. I did not see any non-conference games on any schedules yet. @FarmerJayhawk any word on what KU is looking to do to fill their +1 game? Are they trying to swap home dates with Coastal Carolina or are they looking at a different opponent?

I believe SIU is still the plan, just the date is in flux. It doesn’t make sense, to me at least, to play week 0 and not again until 9/26.

Want power -> ??? -> have power. She flip flopped a few times while running for President on Medicare for All. And that’s hardly unique among politicians for sure, she’s just one of the more brazen about it. Basically the Democratic Marco Rubio.

The BIG said if they leave for a year it’s permanent. I’m not sure how that would all work but they’re not happy. I think it makes a ton of sense to play 10+1 with everyone’s +1 being Nubs, but we’ll see. I think there’s actually a chance we could beat them. Bill's Evolution - The Athletic • Aug 11, 2020 05:14 PM

@drgnslayr said in Bill's Evolution - The Athletic:

Can't read the article.... so I'm going to dream what it could be and what I hope it is.

I hope it is about Bill seeing the game through new eyes. The opportunity on offense is the ability to attack from 5 positions all over the floor instead of limiting by position. "Positionless basketball!" I've heard Bill talk about it before. This is college basketball. You won't meet a team without defensive weakness from any of the 5 positions on the court. Take what the defense gives.

Does size matter? Not when there are liabilities in size. Not when you trade size for slowness, loss of handles, loss of shooting from the perimeter, loss of passing skills, loss of playmaking. Marcus Garrett may have been the most transitional player Kansas has ever had. He can guard 1 - 4 well. He's a skinny kid, not that tall. And the game has shifted. The rules favor him. The rules have turned against big guys bullying their way to the rim. Bill must see this. He must imagine what a team full of guys with Marcus' capabilities on defense could do especially with more offensive skills than Marcus.

It would be nice to end the days when we have a big guy on the perimeter catching the ball while having no capability to dribble in or shoot the ball from that distance... allowing his man to sag, allowing defenses to know what will happen next. Don't get me wrong... I'd take another Doke. He wasn't the norm in the post with his high efficiency of finishing.

Here's a section that makes that point, "Pyper views Self as one of the top five offensive tacticians in the sport, and he has been studying his playbook back to the high-low days when his father, also a high school coach, adopted many of Self’s three-out, two-in motion concepts. In recent years, Pyper’s interest has revolved around Self building his 4-game and continuing to add wrinkles that highlight the strengths of his players.
The conversation eventually delved into the 2020-21 season. KU’s main concern is how to replace Udoka Azubuike, who fit perfectly in Self’s schemes on both ends of the floor. While Self embraced smaller lineups and made 4-game his primary offense the last few years, the principles have mostly remained the same. Creating angles and scoring opportunities for a post player is still a major focus, and featuring a center who can feast on those opportunities is important.
“I think it’s the No. 1 thing,” Pyper says. “They put so much pressure on the defense with that post pin and that post-corner throw; it just opens up everything else by default even if they don’t get a post touch. It’s going to collapse and force the weakside help to take two extra steps in and that opens up everything at the Division I level. Everything.”"

@jayhawks2010 said in Bill's Evolution - The Athletic:

For sure basketball has moved away from a true post game. If your 4 and 5 can space the floor and shoot, defense becomes super difficult. Also it’s funny when I watch nba, post ups can be arm barred and pushed but if they barely slap a hand on a drive it’s a foul. So definitely rules are going against post up play. Lastly I think post up play has fallen off due to the lack of good hook shots from many young post players. If you can’t use either hand on a hook shot, back to the basket post ups are worthless. Doke’s dominance down low really showed last year but early in his career his post up game was so raw and not developed. We partly lost to Villanova In the final four bc he couldn’t punish them offensively inside to make them pay for going small, and we got killed bc he wasn’t as good at rotating out on shooters during that game. Hence wide open threes. This years doke would have made it hard on that Villanova team.

Doke was basically on one leg in that game too. Just a rotten matchup for us.

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Differentiating fact from opinion on COVID-19:

@FarmerJayhawk did you watch his video? He explained why he did it, I understand what you mean, but I also was trying to get why he did it that way. It had to do w/population being so small in the no mask counties and he was doing it per 100,000. 1/3 pop. 90 counties were unmasked, 2/3 pop masks, 15 counties. I wrote that down because I was confused. He also started graph about a week after mandate cause nothing shows up then.

Yeah, whatever he said it was a really bad way to do it. You’re purposefully altering the scale so the effect size looks a lot bigger than it actually is. You’re already controlling for population by normalizing rates to per 100k. It’s quite misleading to put the same time series on different scales and sell them as equivalent. With two variables and two groups you should only use two axes. Full stop.

Landed OT Christien Hawks from lovely Norton, Kansas! I really like the kid. 4 sport athlete, hard worker, and from the good old MCL. Great pickup.

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Differentiating fact from opinion on COVID-19:

@FarmerJayhawk explain, I was watching this when he explained it

Sure. In cases where you have two variables (in this case, date and cases/100k) you should only use 1 y-axis to ensure the scales are the same. You'll notice that by using 2 different scales for the y-axis, the actual numbers are really distorted, making it look visually like masks had a much bigger effect than they actually did vs. non-mask counties. Here's what it looks like using a common scale for the y-axis: !Screen Shot 2020-08-07 at 1.37.14 PM.png ↗

The difference is striking! And to be clear, I support wearing a mask because the science is pretty clear it does help slow the spread, but using misleading documents they're hurting their case. It's also not really possible given these data to make a causal claim about masks being the driver of the decrease in cases because there are almost certainly other variables that explain the decrease, and it would take careful analysis and a bunch more data to tease out. To make the claim just using these data we'd have to run time forward with a mask mandate, then go back in time, don't implement the mandate, and assuming masks were the only thing that changed, look at the difference between the two periods (basically run a giant RCT).

Big 12 said mid to late September so I'm guessing they're looking at either September 19 or 26 to start, depending on how many bye weeks they want teams to have. That would mean that KU's first two games are probably going to be changed since KU is supposed to play Baylor on Sept. 12.

I also still wouldn't be shocked if it ends up being a conference only schedule in the end for both the B12 and ACC because I just can't see FCS football happening this year with the amount of testing they'll have to do and those programs already operating in the red.

Part of the $300k going to SIU was for them to implement Big 12 testing protocols. The other possible wrench is once the game is rescheduled, KU will have to quit camp for a week to "give back" the time they practiced in preparation for week zero since we're likely not playing then.

Yes, it’s possible. But that game probably won’t happen on week zero now. It wouldn’t make sense to go a month between games if the league schedule gets pushed to late September.

Big 12 going to a 9+1 model. So SIU plus regular league schedule.

Interesting news today, that Sen. Cruz talked Trump out of endorsing ↗ Marshall.

So what's everyone's call on the primary? I think Marshall squeaks it out like 42-38-10-5. Kobach really underperforms in the first district due to who he is as a person, and Marshall has every endorsement you could possibly want from there. Only chance I think Kobach has is really doing well in the 2nd and 4th, and Bob Hamilton & Lindstrom taking a bunch of votes from Marshall in the KC burbs, similar to the 2018 gubernatorial primary with Barnett and Selzer playing spoiler.

If Kobach wins, I think Babs rolls in the general. She'll have a tremendous money advantage and Kobach has a real ceiling. I think 15-20% of Republicans would vote for her over Kobach. Marshall is your typical Generic Republican, so he wouldn't have near that kind of crossover vote. He's generally well-liked in GOP circles and has the establishment support. He's also a pretty good fundraiser, so the money disadvantage he has now could be made up. But he doesn't have to spend as much as Bollier to actually win. She has virtually no name ID in the state and will struggle to define herself absent massive spending. All the GOP really has to do is not have Roger's support crater with Trump voters and he'll win.

That's my spiel for today.
