Creighton is a very solid team and I am surprise UMKC stayed that close.
That is true; however, as unlikable as they are, particularly Marshall, they are still pretty good coaches.
Perhaps with Lucas, Coleby and Bragg coming back they thought that, much like Diallo and Alexander, he would not get much playing time.
No. I explained before that once upon the time at the KC Star basketball forum that used to be very popular, my handle was JayHawkFan. Threads got at times heated and the administrator would ban every poster in the thread only to have everybody return with a slightly different handle; it really got to be an ongoing joke. My original handle became JayHawkFan1, JayHawkFanOne, JayHawkFan2, JayHawkFanTwo and finally JayHawkFanToo. When that forum shut down many of us moved to the LJW forum and kept our handles and then it moved with me once more to this forum...and that is all there is to it.
Having said that, I also tend to root for all other Kansas teams next and then conference teams, unless they are playing KU...and yes, I hate MU, UK and Duke. I am indeed a diehard KU fan.
I agree. Doke form is atrocious from the position of his arms and hands to the way he propels the ball. I am surprised the coaching staff did not work with him in the summer and pre-season.
...but...wasn't all the talk that the Big 12 was getting hurt because it did not have a Championship game? Apparently having one does not seem to help much either.
Lightfoot is good at drawing fouls and has been to the line often enough in limited playing time but he has wasted lots of additional opportunities by missing the front end of a 1 and 1. He is the one player that needs to stay after practice and take 500 FTs until he gets it right. If he can improve his FT shooting, he could be a significant contributor.
Yes, but they have Huggy, a superior coach, and that fat check he gets every time he beats KU as an incentive...
The FT is heavily skewed by a few players...
Lightfoot and Young, 0-10
Doke, 9-23
Coleby, 2-6
Svi, 1-4...really? I am not sure which number is more surprising, only 4 attempts or only 1 made...he should be at the line a lot more and shooting 3 times his current average of .250.
FWIW, Jeff Sagarin has WVU as the #1. Huggy is a very good coach and he knows how to use the talent at hand. After Self, I would put Huggins second and Kruger third as the best conference coaches.
ISU has 3 or 4 quality players and a bunch of role payers; one injury to a key player and the team production goes down quite a bit. running on gas fumes left from previous teams; without the Mayor, their perfect storm is over
TCU and Texas Tech have played very soft schedules and their records are inflated accordingly. Once conference play starts they will go back to their usual place in the bottom half of the conference.
KSU is much better than anticipated and playing rather well as a team. Remember when everybody said they would blown out by Maryland and the real test would be how they do against St Louis. Well, it took a last minute shot by Maryland's Trimble to beat KSU and they easily beat STL by 31. Liberace is not a good recruiter or good at keeping players but he is a pretty good X and Os coach.
Baylor has been the big surprise with big wins early in the season...I wonder if Scott Drew is suspended and the assistants are coaching like they did a few years ago. Some of the wins are against teams that now appear to have been over ranked but still pretty good wins. The first game against Baylor at AFH might decide the conference Championship.
OSU is probably the most improved team and might give other teams a run for their money.
OU is down quite a bit and they are at best a middle of the pack team.
Texas has a lot of talent and highly ranked new players but it also has Shaka "legend in his own mind" not so Smart, enough said. They will
probably get better just by virtue of the raw talent they have but they will finish in the bottom half.
This is how I see it...
KU
WVU
Baylor
KSU
ISU
OSU
OU
UT
TCU
TTU
When you have two productive and dependable, future NBA starters (Slim and Slam) you play through them. Right now KU has two bigs that are potential NBA prospects, Bragg and Doke, and neither is very productive or dependable so far...so KU can't really play through them. Lucas, who is an improbable NBA prospect, is a better option but not really a scoring threat.
Interesting. HEM's favorite prospect Karviar Shepherd turned out to be a role players at best; I wonder how he would have fared at KU...
No mathematician needed, simple arithmetic...
Oral Roberts:
1993β94 Oral Roberts 6β21
1994β95 Oral Roberts 10β17
1995β96 Oral Roberts 18β9
1996β97 Oral Roberts 21β7
Oral Roberts - 4 years, 55β54 (.505)
His record at Oral Roberts improved every year and in the 4th year ORU made it to the NIT.
Tulsa - 3 years, 74β27 (.733)
Illinois - 3 years, 78β24 (.765)
KU - 13+ years, 393β84 (.824)
Record minus entire Oral Roberts tenure:
Wins = 74 + 78 + 393 = 545
Losses = 27 + 24 + 84 = 135
Total games = 545 + 135 = 680
Winning percentage = 545 / 680 = .801
Salvy is the type of player that comes around every 10 years. I heard an interview with an MLB scout that stated that without a doubt he will be the best Latin American catcher ever and one of the best ever, regardless of nationality.
Coach Williams had the big advantage of starting his career at a big program; Coach Self, on the other hand had to so some time at Oral Roberts and Tulsa where wins are harder to come by.
When you look at both coaches while at KU, Coach Williams has a 418-101 (.805) record in 15 years while Coach Self is 393β84 (.824) in his 14th year. KU has 22 games left in the regular season, potentially 3 in the Conference Tournament and hopefully 6 in the NCAA so it is very likely that he will get to 418 wins ins his 14th year, or 1 full year earlier than Coach Williams.
NBA scout track everything including how a player performs against good and poor competition. Many players tend to slack off when playing weak competition and Frank showed he does not take day off; scout like this. Frank does not fit the physical stereotype of the NBA PG so he will need all the help he can get to be considered, regardless of how good he is in college; games like the one against UMKC with near perfect numbers do help.
I agree, his FT form is butt ugly and inefficient
Coach Self has replaced all 5 starters before and continued to win the conference; this the difference between a HOF coach and one that has never won a single conference title, even in mid0-major conferences. I believe the Peter's principle has caught up with Shaka Smart.
I agree with you, I guess we are old school. Programs used to have traditional colors and those were the only ones used in their uniforms but now they all have unis with colors completely unrelated to the original colors. Many schools now have black uniforms, no doubt a copy of the original Oakland Raiders, hip-hop thug mentality...how in the world does KSU or Maryland, for example, end up with Black uniforms? I guess we should consider ourselves fortunate that KU/Adidas has not yet unveiled a black uniform.
Well...yes and no. No question that Frank could have sat the entire game and KU still wins by 30+; however, there will be less and less chances for Frank to go off for 30 points as the competition will be considerably stiffer than UMKC; the worst team in the Big 12 Conferences would win comfortably against UMKC. Mason is in the discussion for POY and having a 30 point game helps quite a bit; he is also playing for a future in the NBA and performances like this help his stock. In short, no, I don't believe he played too many minutes in view of the future implications.
The most impressive part is how quickly Josh has adapted to the college game. Most of the time, even great HS players need time to get acclimated...not Josh...π
They started to show Dee Brown and then the stream stopped. Pretty crappy stream, lots of technical issues, run commercials in the middle of the game...oh well, it should be much better from this point forward.
What do you think Coach Self tells the other coach at the end of the game?...you scared us for about 30 seconds...?π
Wiggins had better numbers than Manning...
Holy cow...when the team is hitting on all cylinder it is indeed a thing of beauty...
We would have to tell them we are Duke fans wanting to scope the competition.π
ESPN3 finally working...
This particular year, does it really make a difference which other 3 teams are selected? From what I read, it is a given that Alabama will win it all...
I haves een several variations of those and some are hilarious...
I was thinking the same thing, several well known college players...
His two previous jobs were HC at Eastern Kentucky and UMass. His last year at Eastern KY was pretty successful and got him the job at UMass where he did relatively well.
After the Eddie and Sutton era, OSU was ready for something new and selected Ford; I believe they could have done better but the Suttons left the program in pretty bad shape.
The design was copied in some Eastern European Country whose name escapes me...
I believe you missed my point. I indicated that he was a Kansas and KSU graduate and also an assistant under a Tex Winter and there is where he learned coaching; he is more of a Tex Winter tree than a Dean Smith tree. Also, you missed the part where I indicated that he was a place holder until a Roy Williams took over, this was pretty much a given. How many coaches do you think would want to take the position knowing they are keeping the seat warm for the person the really want? Guthridge was the perfect choice but unfortunately the schedule did not work as planned and Doherty had to be brought in to pinch hit after Larry Brown, George Karl and Eddie Foggler, all UNC alumni, refused the position since they understood Williams was the one they wanted and then proceeded to undermine, sabotage and finally forced him to resign.
Daxter Miles said about UK:
βI give them them their props. Salute them to getting to 36-0. But tomorrow theyβre gonna be 36-1.β
I don't see anything wrong with that other than youthful, boastful enthusiasm giving the other team bulletin board material and not uncommon and no dirty play involved.
My point was that he averages 2 fouls per game at 16 mpg, so it does no appear to be a fouling machine. I saw the foul and there is no question it looks pretty bad. The question was whether this type of play was typical or an abnormality and from what I have seen, together with his apparent academic excellence, appear to indicate the later, that's all.
Travis drew 17 fouls from our bigs while being whistled for only 2 fouls...what's wrong with that picture? Travis is good but not THAT good.
In my opinion, the only #1 ranking that counts is the one at the end of the season; very few people remember who finished #2 unless is the team that lost in the Championship game and fans of the winning team remember them.
On a related topic, UCLA made a huge leap from 11 to 2 in the AP poll by virtue of its win over UK and Baylor got 6 first place votes...really? It goes to show how fickle and subjective the polls are, Computer polls take longer to get the algorithms properly tuned but once they do they are a lot more consistent.
Bill Guthridge is a Kansan and a KSU graduate. He learned coaching from Tex Winter as an assistant at KSU. While HC at UNC for 3 seasons, he took the team to 2 Final Fours, was named coach of the year and won a then record 34 games in one season; pretty damn good if you ask me. He was supposed to be the fillin until Williams was ready to move back but when this did not happen, they had to pick an interim coach, Matt Doherty, and then they proceeded to undermine and sabotage him big time to create a crisis and force Roy Williams' hand...and it worked. What UNC/Smith did to Doherty and KU, his alma matter, was shameful
Does anyone think that Huggins or any other coach, with the exception of John Chaney, encourages or condones this type of behavior? I would think not as it would certainly be counterproductive in the short as well as in the long term. Players/teams with this type of reputation get extreme scrutiny from the refs and a very short leash, definitely not something you want.
Having said that, has Daxter Miles done something like this before? He was an honor roll student in HS and he has been Academic All-Big 12 First Team his first two years, not the type of player you would expect to act like this. I am not defending him or condoning what he did, I just don't know enough about him to label him one way or another with the information at hand; I am sure none of us would label EJ a dirty player for his one time nut hit, would we? Just curious if someone has more information on him.
Kevin Young was a very opportunistic rebounder and he averaged almost 7 RPG in his senior year; in his freshman year, he played 32 MPG he averaged 7.2 RPG. In his one season in Canada, he was named NBL Canada Defensive Player of the Year for the 2014β15 season.
Just a quick comment... the Sporting KC plays in Kansas City, KANSAS...
Of the coaches you mentioned, Dana Altman is 58, Randy Bennett 54 and Jay Wright 55, all older than Bill Self who is 53, so I just don't see any of them as potential replacements in 5 to 10 years since they all woul be in their 60s, wouldn't you agree?
I believe @KUSTEVE might be onto something. There is a condition called sick building syndrome that involves conditions at a location that affect certain people, sometimes very severely; some of the symptoms include severe itching that can result in painful wounds. One way to check for the condition would be to stay somewhere else for a few days and see if there is an improvement. If her condition improves then you can look for environmental conditions at home, such as mold, that are known to have similar effects in some people while not affecting others.
Someone very dear to me suffers from fibromyalgia with some similar symptoms and I know how painful it is for her and how extremely frustrating not being able to help.
Actually strength of schedule is one of the primary factors that all computerized rankings track. Because computers do all the work, it can analize not only a team's opponents but its opponents' opponents, location, margin of victory and so on. It takes a number of games before the approach reaches a steady state where one big win or loss does not dramatically affect the ranking. For example Jeff Sagaring has West Virginia as #1, no doubt a result of its big win over Virginia; a little later in the season and the change is not nearly as big.
In my opinion, these are the reasons why Lucas has not performed to expectations:
-
No Ellis - Perry frequently drew double teams and Lucas received considerably lower attention from opponents. With Bragg playing well below expectations, teams have sagged on Lucas and neutralized him which in turn has opened up the game for the other players. I have posted before pictures of Lande going for a rebound and having 3 and even 4 players all over him and nary a foul being called.
-
Refereeing - perhaps the biggest issue. KU and its players have always been known to play tough but not dirty defense and now they appear to be heavily penalized by the refs. Bills commented on some of his fouls while playing Duke and in one instance he indicated that what was a clear charging fouls was called as a blocking foul on Lucas instead. When a Dukie makes these comments, you ha e to really wonder how fouls are being called. According to write ups from yesterday's game, Travis drew 17 fouls on KU bigs while being whistled fir only 2...what's wrong with that picture? I get Travis is a good player...he is not THAT good.
-
Expectations and new lineup - as discussed above.
-
Injuries - While I agree that injuries have limited some, I don't believe it has been the primary cause for his decline in performance.
That's it, that's all I have.
I know. It's a tradition.
Following tradition, a player of the opposing team will have a career day against KU, usually in a losing cause. Congrats Travis, today was your day...πΎπ
The refs were Gerry Pollard, Chris Rastatter and Kipp Kissinger. I can't say I have heard from them before.
Travis is a 54% career FT shooter; if you want someone from the other team shooting FT he is probably the one you would pick. Of course he went 19-22...who would have thunk it. π³
No question it was an extremely disappointing loss but the girls had an incredible season and one they can be proud of and one to build upon.
While Wright has been enjoying producing music, he has been playing overseas every year since his time in the NBA
