How about a third option, innocent bystander...
KU should have no problem paying a a worthy coach $3M. When you consider all the former coaches it has been paying paying, it adds up to considerably more than $3M. I imagine Mangino and Gill might be off the books by now and Weiss, if not off, pretty close to it so money is definitely available. Amazingly enough, as bad as the KU football program is, it still makes a profit larger than the basketball team does.
Marcus got a T last night.
Duke has a proud tradition of having dirty players. If you look a the list of all-time most hated players in college basketball, it is full of Duke players.
Do we have an Injure Reserve List in this Forum? It might be a busy place...
...and rebound.
If he is not invited to the combine chances are he stays; he might get an invite anyway just because KU’s reputation and coaching staff contacts.
Does anyone know when the invitations come out?
You missed my point. You found what you yourself thought was a ridiculous rumor in another forum, why then bring it to our forum and increase the ridiculessnees when there are lots of more realist rumblings out there?
Not really. Huggins had been out of coaching for a year before KSU and was able to contact many top players like Walker and Beasley without the restrictions that coaches have. The top players that came to KSU were a result of the reputation of Huggins and part of the Dalonte Hill package with his contacts/pipeline from the East Coast AAU circuit, this the reason why a Hill was the highest paid Assistant Coach in Division I and once he left, the recruiting fell off big time. Other than Beasley and Walker, both Huggins recruits, no Martin recruited player was drafted. I believe the only two player from the Huggins-Martin era in the NBA are Beasley and McGruder who was a Beasley HS teammate and Hill recruit from the DC area. Perhaps the 3 top Martin recruits were Pullen ranked #88, Colon was a 3-Star and Clemente was unranked. Like I said, KSU ceiling appears to be a 3-Star, 70-100 player.
Nicely said. This is the on going trend started by the Golden State Warriors with 5 players that can play inside and also hit from the outside. The era of the big plodding Center is coming to an end. This is why Embiid is so good, he can go outside and hit the 3 and the big, slower Centers cannot keep up with him and he can also overpower the faster but smaller centers. At this time, Doke is a big plodding Center with no outside game and subpar rebounding for his size and his potential in the new NBA is limited.
I will play devil’s advocate and ask, if you think taking this players is so ridiculous and far fetched, why even bring it up? Why not just ignore it like the many other silly rumors that are out there all the time? Just askin’...
Given that Silvio/guardian is/are directly named in the FBI investigation, what do you think are the chances he plays next season or he is declared ineligible by the NCAA and he is gone?
I am not saying there are no opportunities overseas, only that there are considerably fewer in the better Euro Leagues than before, otherwise, a player like Preston with a higher ceiling than Doke would not be playing in the Bosnian League for nominal pay. Keep in mind that the stretch PF and bigs that can shoot from outside are popular in Europe.
Australia is a new but small market. Landen grew up in Japan and speaks Japanese so I imagine it is a lot easier for him than for the average foreign player.
Come on guys...let’s keep it classy.
Two completely different levels of recruiting. Illinois recruits or tries to recruit top tier, i.e. 3-5 Star players where KSU goes after middle level tier, i.e. 1-3 Star players and they migh now be able to go after fringe 4 Star players.
Euro basketball has changed a lot in recent years and the better Leagues now develop their own players. The time when American players would star is long gone. Most players that go there, like Preston and the Ball brothers, end up playing in the smaller Leagues where pay is not that good and conditions are poor. Better opportunities in the Middle and Far East, particularly China, but I read the living conditions are particularly bad.
Looks like the perfect storm at WSU is over and now is clear sailing into oblivion. Wichita has typically gone in cycles, a few good years followed by a longer period of bad years. Marshall should have left when the going was good and his value high. OTOH, if he can get his upcoming team to play at a decent or high level he will prove he is indeed a good coach.
Harden, the NBA scoring leader had a bad night shooting 2-18 from the field and 1-10 from 3. Wiggins had 13 points! 8 rebounds! 3 assists and 1 block but both teams shot extremely poorly, the Wolves 38.8% and the Rockets 36.5%.
I will guess it is a player that has not signed a LOI only a financial aid package since coaches cannot recruit players with signed LOIs.
Is it supposed to be a ranked player, say top 30-50 or just a program player with potential? Isn’t talking to a committed player frowned upon? I remember Calipari getting a lot of flack for having Terrence Jones decommit fro Washington and sign with UK immediately. I believe he also got Enes Kanter who had also committed to Washington the same year.
Nice article and interesting numbers. When comparing starting 5 +/- numbers he has the current 76ers as tops with a net +21.4 and the ‘16-‘17 Warriors second at a net +20; however, according to the numbers he shows, the net +/- for the Warriors should be +24 and not +20 placing them ahead of the 76ers.
There has never been any allegations of wrongdoing by Archie Miller and at his previous stop, Dayton, he ran a squeaky clean program. Just curious, what makes you think he would start acting differently now?
Anything is possible. Keep in mind that 5'6" Spud Webb won the NBA Dunk contest as did 5'9' Nate Robinson...not once, not twice but three times.
I believe there were over 700 last season so I think we will have close to 800 this time around.

Kansas needs to make sure and get the message out there that Kansas is a victim in all of this. They are stepping up by denying the need for an internal investigation. Our program is in a constant state of investigation, 24/7/365.
So....every 4 years the guard is down for one day on leap years? :smiley_cat:
Anyone that owns a business has (or should have) a basic understanding/knowledge of money laundering since many legitimate business expenses, if not properly recorded, can fall under that category. I will have owned my business for 20 years this May and the two accountants i had (the first one retired) made sure I was aware of the basic details. So, while I am not or claim to be an expert I do have a basic understanding of the subject...and I slept at the Holiday Inn Express to boot...
Interesting. Your post must have come as I was typing mine and obviously I did not see it, otherwise I wold have skipped mine since we are both saying pretty much the same thing.

However, it is a crime to conceal who payments are being made to, or make a payment to one person in order to ferry that payment to another person. That's why this is about money laundering and wire/bank fraud. While it is legal to pay people to endorse products, because the source and beneficiary of the payments are intended to be hidden, that's a violation of banking laws.
if Adidas is paying someone to endorse a product or brand be that directly or indirectly, it might be causing the recipient to break a NCAA rule and become ineligible but it is not breaking any law as long as it is properly recorded in its accounting books and the recipient pays taxes on the income. Most companies do not pay endorsers directly, they do it through advertising agencies that act as intermediaries. I have a family friend that was a high end model and endorsed high end cosmetics and the negotiations were never between her and the manufacturer but between the advertising agency hired by the manufacturer to run the campaign and her agent.
You have no direct information that a private contract does not exist between Adidas and the recipient with a confidentiality clause, right?
Hiding payments would be illegal if they re done with the purpose of breaking an actual law and not NCAA regulation or to hide income, i.e. money laundering. We know these payments do not break any law and we don't know if taxes were being evaded.
These Adidas payments were being made, and money was being sent with a false purpose. That's why the feds are involved.
I believe the purpose was very clear, they were designed to steer athletes to certain programs, hide the information from the NCAA to avoid ineligibility and avoid penalties but breaking a NCAA regulation is not a criminal offense. Yes, it might land the parties on probation but no one will go to jail over it. If the schools feel aggrieved the recourse is Civil not Criminal Court.
I doubt many of the universities actually get caught up in the criminal aspect because the whole criminal aspect is that the payments, the sources, and the beneficiaries were all supposed to be concealed. That's the crime.
Hiding information from the NCAA is a violation of its rules and regulations but it is not a crime. It might result in penalties imposed by the NCAA if ineligible player are found to have participated in games or programs are found to have been involved. How many athletes and programs have been found to have violated these rules over the years? Many...programs were placed on probation, financial penalties levied and people lost their jobs and yet no one ever went to jail over them.
However, the standard for the criminal part is different than it is for the NCAA. While KU may not have committed a crime, the NCAA could still make other findings that don't rise to the level of criminal action.
The NCAA has no, zero, zilch, nada authority to find any criminal activity; it can only find violations of its own rules which is not a crime. If they suspect a crime was committed, they would have to refer the case to an agency with the proper authority...the NCAA ain't it.
Ouch. That is going to leave a mark.
I have maintained from the beginning that the entire case is a reach.
There is no law that I know that prevents Adidas or any other firm or business interest from paying someone to endorse its product; in fact, they do it all the time.
Now, if the player accepts payment he becomes ineligible to play college sports and if he plays he likely breaks multiple NCAA rules, this is RULES not laws. The NCAA has no authority to create and /or enforce laws, only the Government can do this. The NCAA has the power to create rules, to which the member schools adhere voluntarily, but they do not have the weight of law and the only consequence is penalties to schools by the NCAA but nobody goes to jail over it. If the schools feel like they have been wronged, then they can seek remedy in Civil Court which can only assign money penalties but no jail terms.
The only way anyone goes to jail is if the recipient failed to pay taxes on the income in which case and given the money involved, the IRS probably levies a penalty and collects back taxes and maybe even then no one goes to jail, Remember that Al Capone went to jail for tax evasion but his was large scale and premeditated and not the amounts involved in the current deal.
I would have hoped he would be top 100 by now considering the year and awards he had as well as the offers from big time programs.
In the last 15 years UConn has 3 titles, UNC has 3 titles, Duke has 2 titles, one gifted to them by the refs and KU and KU have 1 tiltle each.
Considering the huge talent gap between UK and Duke versus the rest of the field, both programs have underachieved big time.
Amen to that.
There is no way either one goes back. I see a better chance of Dedrick declaring for the draft than having to sit another season to play for an unproven coach when he would be an All-American candidate and lottery pick if he stays at KU.. With a good showing next season K J might be borderline draftable or could play overseas which will not happen if he has to sit another year. Sounds like daddy Lawson is taking lessons from daddy Ball in how to milk every minute of fame and look like a clown in the process.
Has Duke replaced UK as the preferred destination of OADs?
The recent run to the Elite 8 will certainly help with recruiting. Weber is a pretty decent coach, can identify hidden talent...the problem is his personality and voice which apparently make players want to leave.
That run made the legend of Shaka and has been smoke and mirrors since then. He has not won a single regular season title in the Colonial, A10 or Big 12 Conferences.
After the famous run to the Final Four in 2011, Smart has never made it our of the first weekend of the Tournament in 6 tries. The next two years '12 and '13 VCU won the first game and lost the second. Then next four times, 2 in the A10 and two in the Big 12 his teams lost in the round of 64.
This seems to be the make or break year for him.
ESPN has been losing viewers big time and by extension advertising. They have had a couple of big layoffs and they desperately need money. Expect to see more of it.
Can we clone him and get double the pleasure?
I thought Vandy was over the schoolie limit but I have noit checked recently.
If Langford comes to KU then the team is pretty much complete for next season. If he goes elsewhere, the wait might end up hurting KU some since it might have to pass on other prospects while waiting for him. Even without Langford, the team will be very good and we all know that Coach Self is known for pulling last minute surprises; perhaps someone that will reclassify that we don't know.
I believe Garret has a good shooting form but he just did not have the repetitions required to develop a consistent 3 point shot, in great part because it really was not critical considering how many other shooters KU had.
I believe that he will eventually get to 35% from 3.
Agreed. withe the recent influx of players to UK some of the earlier commits must be having second thoughts. It would be difficult for Herro to de-commit since he has done it once already. If Langford does not come he sure would have been a great fit.
What is the position where KU would need the most help if Langford goes elsewhere? I would think wing and a true shooter? I bet Tyler Herro is wishing he waited a little longer before committing to UK; he would be a perfect fit at KU.
FWIW, the very fist Bracketology for next season ↗ has KSU as a #4 seed which makes them top 16. The core of the team is coming back and if they improve some, they will be very competitive in the conference, potentially top 2 or 3.
BTW, Bracketology as 6 conference teams in the dance Texas not being one of them. Another finish in the bottom half and Smart is likely gone particularly when Rick Barnes has Tennessee as a top 10 team...that is got to burn.
Marcus had a nice game with several key plays at the end. The 2 3s to end regulation were amazing.
Embiid has passed the concussion protocol and waiting to be cleared by the team which will likely be the third game on Thursday.
Times have changed. There are many scouting agencies like this one ↗ that scout American and International players for NBA and overseas teams and they are in contact with American college programs scouting players for potential international teams. KU staff has information not only on NBA but also international potential destinations; this is part of the service they sell to prospects parents, the ability to provide complete scouting reports including overseas opportunities.
