Unlike Kentucky ↗, KU's basketball programs is not overrated. :smiley:

Is this current KU team special? • Nov 04, 2017 10:17 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Well..."technically" the season is still on for the football team so I doubt Coach Self would do anything until football season is over which we all know that for all practical purposes it happened a while back for the football team.

@jayballer54

You have to stop getting yourself so worked up and taking things so personally...you are going to give yourself a heart attack.

We all have different opinion, sometimes we agree and some others we don't; they are just opinions and nothing more.

Still unable to complete plays when it counts. The 3 FG could have easily been TDs if a few critical plays were completed. Red zone offense non-existing.

KU cannot complete plays when they need to. They have failed to complete at every critical time and had to settle for field goals.

I have always advocated a system that requires at least best 2 out of 3 at a certain stage, says the elite 8 or even the Sweet 16. Having 68 teams is the equivalent of giving participation trophies, we all know that there is no chance in hell a team in the bottom half will ever win the tournament particularly when it is not even the top 68 teams but many teams from small conference qualify by virtue of having won their tournament and had they played in one of the stronger conferences they pretty much would go win-less. With a system like this, KU likely does not win in '88 but probably has at least 3 or more championship in those years where one bad game doomed teams capable of winning the whole thing had the had a second chance. Other than than football which makes it logistically impossible, I cannot think of another major sport that has single elimination

Last night observations • Nov 04, 2017 04:15 AM

@jayballer54

Actually, most coaches prefer players score a layup than a dunk since it takes a lot less energy. Coach Self has said that himself and so has Coach Williams who cited a practice drill at North Carolina where layups were worth 3 point and dunks 1.

I understand that dunks are attractive to fans and at times can create momentum, but generally speaking, dunks take a lot more energy than a layup and count the same 2 points.

@Texas-Hawk-10

I keep telling people that and they just don't believe it, they think basketball generates the majority of income.

Last night observations • Nov 03, 2017 04:22 PM

Based on the current FT stats we have for Doke, I am sure KU will see a lot of "poke-a-Doke" from other teams in close games, so he will likely be sitting at the end of close games. Lightfoot's FT numbers are not much better either.

I agree with your analysis. This is one situation where the Occam's Razor principle would seem applicable.

@stoptheflop

Most of the younger posters probably don't remember the 1987 game between KU and KSU and aptly labeled the "Toilet Bowl" because KU had one win and KSU was winless and the game ended in a tie. The upcoming game against Baylor is looking like a repeat of the "Toilet Bowl."

Here is a description of that game...

1987: The Toilet Bowl

The lone tie during the Governor's Cup era took place on November 7, 1987, in Manhattan, and is the most infamous game in the history of the series. Termed "The Toilet Bowl" and "The Futility Bowl" by national commentators, the game featured 1–7 KU and 0–8 K-State. The contest lived down to expectations and resulted in a 17–17 tie, which was secured when Kansas blocked a field goal at the end of the game.[7][8] Following the tie, both teams lost their last two games of the season. KU coach Bob Valesente was fired following the season. His counterpart Stan Parrish kept his job, but did not make it past 1988 after the Wildcats posted an 0–11 campaign to extend a winless streak to 28 games. Parrish's dismissal led to the hiring of Bill Snyder, who would shift the direction of the series in favor of the Wildcats.

Unfortunately what you see and what you can prove are two different things. The squid has always had a buffer that gives him cover; eventually he will make one mistake and get caught.

Hmmmm wondering • Nov 02, 2017 09:39 AM

I will add some gas to the fire, According to ESPN's BPI, ↗ Wichita State is predicted to win the NCAA. Weirder things have happened before.

Wouldn't you love a KU-WSU final? The networks/NCAA would not allow it since the ratings would be tiny.

Marcus Garrett • Nov 02, 2017 09:28 AM

@KUSTEVE

The two vacated Final Fours were not assigned to Calipari but to others associated with the programs. So far he has been able to cover his tracks and have plausible deniability; eventually the law will catch up with him.

@BeddieKU23

Interesting to see Kentucky with only one signed recruit to date.

I am starting to think that maybe some prospects are waiting to see if the elite programs get caught in the FBI investigation. Arizona was getting top recruits and now it is under investigation; Louisville is now radioactive. Most everybody has wondered for years how the squid gets all the top prospects; I am sure the FBI has wondered the same thing. The Nike Summer League is under investigation and it is heavily tied to Nike schools. It really makes sense for a top recruit to wait and see where the chips fall; programs, even elite, will always make room for a top recruit regardless of how late he commits.

Badgers beat Missouri • Nov 02, 2017 09:04 AM

@jayballer54

Inter-school scrimmages such as the Oklahoma game and the MU-Wisconsin scrimmage are closed door so no fans/public would be present. Charity fund raiser scrimmages are open door to the public and some, such as the KSU-MSU game, had free admission with people making voluntary donations instead.

While there is some evidence that marijuana might have some beneficial effect for things like pain and nausea control for conditions such as those resulting from chemotherapy and also conditions such as anxiety and bi-polar disorder, there is absolutely no doubt that it affects the mental ↗ and physical ↗ characteristics negatively.

Obviously different individuals will be affected differently, some more and some less, but the negative effect is undeniable. We have all seen people high on pot, does anyone believe that that individual's mental and physical capabilities are enhanced? The answer is no, the "high" state results in a more "mellow" person with much slower mental and physical reactions and responses. Granted that the effect might be considerably less for am athlete in top physical form but evidence suggests that generally the effect of pot/marijuana will be negative with the only variable being the extent. The first link above describes in detail why people might think it is helping, but is really just changing perception, which might be fine for pain or anxiety management but not for athletic performance.

That was my impression as well.

Marcus Garrett • Nov 01, 2017 11:36 PM

I agree. Graham is a known quantity and there is no need to evaluate him under game conditions since Coach Self knows what he can do. More important to let other players show what they can do.

Kentucky Down To Three Guards • Nov 01, 2017 10:46 PM

@jaybate-1.0

As tempting as it is, I have purposefully avoided the political section (I bet most of us have) since I believe it has been a net negative to this forum and has created animosity between members that did not exist before. I prefer to just talk about KU sports, particularly basketball which is the primary reason many of us moved to this forum. Just my opinion and I don't expect others to agree with me.

You can always send private chat messages.

Kentucky Down To Three Guards • Nov 01, 2017 08:37 PM

As @mayjay pointed out, the answer falls outside sports and would have to be moved the political section. That is your clue.

HighEliteMajor said:

@mayjay What do they have in common?

Oh...I see what you are doing... :smile:

@BeddieKU23

KU is currently ranked 2 or 3 depending on publication; with Grimes and one more player KU likely ends up 1 or 2. Interesting that current Rivals #33 Kentucky has only 1 - 5 star recruit signed to date but several prospects in the pipeline...maybe prospects are hearing rumors about the FBI investigation related to them, same with #20 Arizona with only 2 left signed.

Other schools of interest to KU fans #28 UCLA with only 2 - 3 stars, #43 MU with 1 - 4 star and 2 - 3 stars, a big drop from its current class, #55 WVU 2 - 3 stars, #59 Baylor 1 - 4 star, #63 Wichita State 3 - 3 stars. #81 KSU 1 - 3 star. Louisville and South Carolina not listed in the top 100.

@BeddieKU23

When you consider the transfers that will be eligible, it will be a monster class and with experience to boot. I wish the ranking services would have one that includes transfers since it is a truer indicator of the class strength.

Time to rename "The Streak" • Oct 31, 2017 05:10 PM

@elpoyo

...and what do we call your streak of anti-Wiggins, anti-Self posts? I know, the chicken :shit: streak.

Hmmmm wondering • Oct 31, 2017 04:58 PM

A couple of things that need to be clarified. Roy Williams did not end the series withe WSU, the series was stopped at the request of WSU as it had be come a one-sided event.

Next, and as others have mentioned, a lot of the games KU plays in the non-confrere schedule are aimed squarely at playing at or near areas where there are potential prospects or to play at the home of a KU player (remember playing in South Dakota, home of Jeff Bosche?). Wichita is close enough that prospects and families can easily drive to Lawrence to see games.

Last, if you follow WSU basketball history, they go on spurts, a few good years followed by longer periods of irrelevance. WSU is going through their "perfect storm" where they have benefited from a core group of lower ranked players that tuned out to be excellent college players and right now it might be at its peak but there are no assurances it will stay this way, particularly if Marshall leaves.

The game would have a lot of upside for WSU and no downside since they get national exposure (most KU games do) and they will also be the de-facto underdog so no downside with a loss. The opposite is true for KU, they will be expected to win and if they don't we will hear it for ever...I still hear from WSU fans about the loss in San Antonio...how many years ago? Exposure? no, they can get better exposure playing a East/West Coast top program instead.

Would it be nice to play WSU? Yes. Does it make sense for KU? Based on the above, No.

@HighEliteMajor

It was discussed at the time and that is what did it for many of us. I will try to find an article that spells it out. You can see that all the talk is about all the extra programming KU will be getting and not one mention of money.

First Game • Oct 31, 2017 01:32 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

I hear you, I would have to switch to Comcast since TW is not quite yet available in my area. If you have internet you can always get something like Sling, Hulu, DirectTV, PSVue or one of the streaming TV providers that carries ESPN3 and get it this way. As you know, I have been against this contract from the beginning since I don’t believe is in the best interest of Kansans living in Kansas.

ISU has a bunch of new players including several transfers and they are probably just learning to play together and trying different lineups; they will get better.

First Game • Oct 30, 2017 05:39 AM

@HighEliteMajor

KU did not get any money out of the deal with TW/Spectrum Metro Sports, they got “in kind” programming in return that broadcasts minor sports such as rowing and women’s soccer and KU sports news. I bet that in the KC Metro area alone more people would watch the upcoming exhibition game against Pitt State than the combined audience of all other sports (not including football) combined in an entire year. Realistically, other than the families and close friends, how many people would you say watch the women’s rowing team? 100? Less?

There are two sports that make money football and men’s basketball, all other sports do not cover their own expenses and only exits because of the two money makers.

Here is a write up ↗with some details. This story ↗ describes the procedure for other providers to get the programming. I contacted SureWest at the time and subsequently and was told that TW made it so expensive to get the programming that made it impossible for them or any of the other providers to get it and sure enough, none has gotten it to date.

First Game • Oct 29, 2017 11:33 PM

@Kcmatt7

The truth is that most KU fans/viewers don’t have a clue on how to use a VPN and would prefer to tune in directly via their local cable provider. TW/Spectrum Metro Sports has a monopoly on several basketball games, a few football games and most women’s basketball and volleyball games. KU fans in the city with the largest fan base should not have to jump through hoops to watch their favorite teams; I have better and easier access to all of KSU and MU games than I do KU...that is not right by any stretch of the imagination. Blacking our the entire state and giving broadcast monopoly to one station and not even getting any money in return equates to a lousy deal any way you look at it.

I see the conference as having 4 tiers.
- Top tier: KU, WVU
- Upper middle tier: TCU, OU, ISU
- Lower middle tier: UT, Baylor, TTU
- Bottom tier: KSU, OSU

6-8 teams to the NCAA.

First Game • Oct 29, 2017 05:29 PM

@BShark

You are missing the main issue...yes, ESPN3 is fairly available but it is blacked out in the entire state and the extended KC Metro Area. For example, the KSU exhibition game against Fort Hays is coming up at 2:00 pm on Fox and readily available; KU’s exhibition games? Not so much.

First Game • Oct 29, 2017 04:46 PM

@BShark

Well...they are all on tv but some not readily available unles you have access to a Metro Sports. I believe last season 6 games were set up that way which left a lot of fans unable to watch those games. Also, women’s basketball and volleyball and some football games as well are blacked out...one lousy contract in my opinion. In the KC Metro area, Zenger is hated just because of this.

In comparison, I can watch every single KSU and MU games without a problem. I have yet to find anyone that calls this a good contract after hearing all the facts.

ISU beats TCU. The Cyclones are good and trending in the right direction. If OU wins, there will be 4 teams tied for 1st in the conference and the chances of one making it to the championship series getting smaller.

Sherron • Oct 28, 2017 11:02 PM

@mayjay

Tyler Hannsborough is the closest with 3 first team and 1 second team. Doug McDermoth has also 3 first team. In the old days players like Wilt did no play varsity in their freshman year and now, the better players do not stay in college long so it is highly unlikely any one will be selected consensus 1st team for 4 years. Kareem was a 3 time consensus first team and 3 time POY a so was Bill Walton and Oscar Rortson, Pete Maravich was a 3 time consensus 1st team. These are the few that come to mind and I am sure many of the great players of the 70s-90s might also be 3 time consensus first team.

I am in the South West corner of the KC Metro Area so all the local stations are on a narrow North East band from me. I have been looking at the Winegard FlatWave Air Amplified Antenna with a 60 Mile Range and an amplified splitter since I will be connecting 7 TV sets via the existing cable wiring. I have heard of the Mohu antenna you mentioned and I will have to do some research.

@3genhawk

Thanks, that is a very up to date comparison. I had been looking at others that were several months older and seems like channel lineups changed quite often and special offers pop up all the time. The good things is that you can switch providers on a monthly basis at no cost and with no installation needed since the Roku receivers work with all of them.

Kansas State Mildcats • Oct 28, 2017 08:56 PM

And so, the self destruction begins...

First Game • Oct 28, 2017 08:53 PM

@BShark

I find it unbelievable. I give them well over $1,500 a year (which does not even include any premium channels like HBO) and they don’t have to spend a penny in marketing or installation and they choose to lose me as a customer. Their business model is completely jacked and this is why people are leaving cable providers in droves.

Scrimmage Results • Oct 28, 2017 08:42 PM

I know it is hard to tell how good the teams will be this early but Ken Pomeroy on his first ranking of the season thinks the confernce will be strong. 2 teams in the top 10, 5 in the top 21, 9 in the top 39 and OSU is the lowest ranked at #50.

I know some will say that the lack of NCAA success means the conference is not strong but keep in mind that OU has been to the Final Four more recently than KU. It might not have more than a couple of title contenders but the rest of the teams are well above average; top to bottom the Big 12 is still the strongest conference.

First Game • Oct 28, 2017 08:13 PM

@BShark

I did. I even gave them the links to other providers with much lower rates...for new customers of course, and they would not budge. Looks like I will be going with internet and either Hulu or Sling. Looks like I wIll be getting a few Roku sticks and an outdoor antenna for the local stations.
