No shooters on the team. Teams will pack it in and take their chances. Self is enamored with combo guards who handle and play d but cant shoot. Why this team has Doke, Dave, and DeSousa on the roster is beyond me. Two of them is plenty. Robinson-Earl made the right choice in recruiting. Self is stuck in the past.

It’s not rocket science. Self recruited both as Doke replacements. JRE would be our starting 4 right now...

Yea Self has recruited stretch modern bigs.

He needs to quit playing big though. For forever. We’re better 4 with guards and it is glaringly obvious.

I think this team is great.

Just frustrating to lose a game the way they did. Felt like the Chiefs/Titans game all over.

Difference in this game is we pissed down our leg to lose it.

Up 4 under 2 and Dotson shits himself.

@Kcmatt7 I say this respectfully to you - Wilt would have made LeBron cry like a little girl.

Respectfully, I'll disagree. I'm not even here to tell you LBJ is the GOAT.

But he absolutely would have been able to play with literally anyone who's ever played the game.

LeBron is, and this is not debatable imo, a top 5 player of all-time and would have been in any era. He will either finish 1st or 2nd All-time in points. He will finish 3rd All-time in assists. To argue that he isn't one of the Top 5 players to ever play the game, when doing that, is absolutely absurd.

dylans said:

@Kcmatt7 He’d have to change his attitude. LeBron cried too much across the first 3/4 of his career to be as successful as you imagine in that era. He’s plenty big, but mentally a little weak - he wants everyone to like him and those men didn’t give a flying frak. One of the top 5 players ever would have a big adjustment to make or he’d be pretty average for years.

I disagree with every word of this statement. I'll just leave it at that.

I'll admit, music was better in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

And perhaps the rules of the NBA were more entertaining rules for people who enjoy watching a physical game. Which I do prefer.

But I stop at anyone thinking LeBron wouldn't have absolutely dominated in the exact same way during a more physical era when he's arguably the most freakish specimen that has ever lived between his height, weight, athleticism and coordination.

HighEliteMajor said:

... and the NBA was terrific back then. It was incredible. One of my great enjoyments of life. Not the pu***, hands off, baloney of today. Completely unwatchable. Curry would still be a great player, but not near the weapon. And if MJ played now, with all this touch foul, freedom of movement stuff, no one would even question whether he was greater than Lebron. Magic is still (in my opinion) the greatest all around player of all time.

The teams were greater back then. Look at the lineups that got trotted out on a nightly basis.

I will say, I saw a deal on ESPN this morning on Jarrett Allen. The guy has the 70s 'fro going strong. Those were better days in the NBA. Big 'fros and short shorts.

By the way, KU 75 Nova 67.

Can I do it again this year @BShark ?

UK sucks.

Other Games • Dec 18, 2019 06:57 PM

Utah is SUPER young. Almost all freshman and sophomores playing. But they have beaten Minnesota and BYU so far this year.

I'd imagine it ends up a tight game, UK struggles to score, but pulls it out at the end.

KU First in Conference in 3pt % • Dec 18, 2019 04:50 PM

This team is a Bill Self dream, if they can cut down on the turnovers.

Two dominant bigs. Length. Defensive nightmare. Efficient 3-point shooting both in makes and shot selection.

2020 Football Recruiting • Dec 17, 2019 02:32 PM

You can tell why he's a WO. Not that it's a bad thing.

Positives: He seems to fill a hole well. He has a good frame to build on. A couple of positions he could play. Either H-back or LB. He does seem to have good hands. If he were to stick it out all 5 years, he could possibly see the field. He'd definitely looks like he could be a great add for the scout team.

Negatives: Anything outside of the tackles he's a bit slow to get to. He plays with his pads pretty high for a guy who is only 6'. Something that I've found is really hard to teach because it's just a natural instinct. No matter how many times you drill it at practice, the second the game starts they stand straight up lol.

Glad he's getting a chance. It's going to be a ton of work for him to ever see the field, but he wouldn't be the first to go walk-on to starter.

He wouldn’t use it if he did. This is strictly a one year “prove it” stop.

Fair enough.

I hope they at least get it approved in case something happens though. Seems like the safe thing to do, even if he planned on leaving no matter what.

Former KU players • Dec 16, 2019 01:38 PM

It's not basketball, but it's still a former Jayhawk.

11 targets, 5 catches and a TD yesterday for Steven Sims Jr. He's slowly become more and more involved in the Redskins offense and return game. A guy that deserved better in his time at KU, I really hopes he has a good NFL career.

2020 Football Recruiting • Dec 15, 2019 12:59 AM

I think Franks is a significant upgrade over Stanley. Arm talent alone. Can’t wait to see what Dearmon can do with an off-season.

2020 Transfer List • Dec 13, 2019 09:41 PM

@BShark Yea it's beyond me. At KU, a 150 ranked 3 star is on the team and someone uses to recruit against us. But at UK, you can stick two 5* guys at the end of the bench no big deal.

Blows my mind.

Also somehow Whitney is still mocking in the 1st.

2020 Transfer List • Dec 13, 2019 09:12 PM

You'd have to think you see a UK player defect sometime this season. Juzang, Brooks and Whitney have all gotten off to a rough start. Add Allen into the mix at some point. All play the same position.

Then you have Askew, Fletcher, Boston and Clarke all coming in next year.

Seems like at least two on the current roster will be defects.

Played two good teams in Oregon and BYU, the two games where his numbers are a lot lower. I watched the Oregon game and parts of the South Carolina game and he definitely still has his moments good and bad. More bad than good defensively which is probably part of the clash with Bill.

Defensive liability who turns the ball over a lot and has a flat inconsistent shot.

He has nothing to offer a Bill Self coached team.

Marcus Garrett • Dec 13, 2019 08:52 PM

HighEliteMajor said:

I have to disagree. You can play great defense vs. a drive by sagging off multiple feet. Gives significant time to react. Marcus would be a very easy guy to guard. Sag off and shade his right hand. Marcus just picks his spots and that's when he scores which is absolutely fine. Perhaps I'm missing something but I see a guy whose only threat offensively is driving to this right.

You can. And that is what happened last year. But I'll offer one reason why it isn't working the same this season.

Doke.

As Dragon mentioned, if you sag you cannot pressure the feed into the post. So you give Garrett a free lane to throw it in to Doke this way. (And to Big Dave to a lesser extent).

If you sag too far off, you give Garrett room to create on the drive. If you get too close he'll blow by you. Sure he is picking spots. But everyone does in a Bill Self offense. And yes he's easier to defend than Dotson or Ochai or Moss. That's obvious. But that isn't what I'm trying to say.

Compared to the Garrett of a season ago, he's been significantly more of an offensive threat. My eyes told me this, and the numbers seem to back that statement up.

@Kcmatt7 I agree it was a bad fit but I don't really like the passive aggressive narrative being essentially put out there through Grimes family.

That article mentioning Grimes family never operated like he was OAD is a huge joke. It's damage control now that it didn't work out when I know 100% he wasn't attending classes second semester.

Fair enough. You shouldn't be putting out negative narratives and burning bridges anytime you leave a place. His mindset coming in was definitely not where it needed to be.

Teams are learning they can't just back off Marcus because he'll pick up speed and drive to the rim. And without pressure on him he can make very precise passes.

Every once in a while he'll try the trey, and well he should. Sometimes.

I'd like to see him become a better shooter as the year progresses.

I typed something very similar to this earlier today but got side-tracked and didn't end up posting it.

He's not the black hole he was a year ago. You saw it click in B12 play last year, but it's even better this year.

If you're going to give him the space, he's going to drive you downhill and all he has to do is make one move and he's at the rim. You can't recover if he beats you and there is no way help can get there in time. If you sag just a little, his guy can't help on the pass and he is able to make easy passes still. If his guy does leave for the double, he's making the easy cut.

You have to pressure him this year, and he doesn't even have to take a 3 to make you do it.

Good for Grimes • Dec 13, 2019 07:49 PM

Here's my personal story. Maybe this is part of it for why I don't hate guys for leaving. It's not a direct comparison, but it helps me feel some empathy.

I was on try-out teams growing up. Always a starter. I started for our 7th grade basketball team and was the top scorer. Then in 8th grade, somehow I ended up being on the B team/A team bench rider. I didn't get it. The 8th grade coach didn't like me for some reason. I can tell you, if I had to do 4 more years with him, I wouldn't have made it. We were a bad fit for each other. That's it. Nothing more than that. I went on to start for our Freshman team and then again as a Senior on Varsity. I don't know my 8th grade coach was the only coach that I ever road the bench for. Or what I did or didn't do that caused me not to start. I simply just didn't.

I'd imagine this is how a lot of transfers feel. They get here, and for whatever reason they don't click with the coach. They shouldn't suck it up for 4-years just because. It's not quitting either. If Grimes just quit basketball, sure maybe he is a wuss. But these guys transfer to go play elsewhere. It's no different than leaving a company because they have either no advancement opportunities, your boss is a royal dick, you can get a promotion, etc. I mean that company put money into training you. But you should be looking out for yourself. So should these guys.

You only get one life. I'd hate to ask someone be miserable for even 4 years of it just for my enjoyment.

Lots of great Coffee shops and breakfast places for sure! I haven't been to Kate's or Big Biscuit yet, but I love the other three!

There is also Bloom Baking, Opera House, Banksia, Homesteader Cafe, the Jacobson, eggtc., Westport Cafe and a few others I'm sure I'm missing! Very good breakfast food/brunch. Toughest choice most weekends is deciding!

Then you have just the coffee shops, Mildred's, Messenger, Mother Earth, Oddly Correct, The Roastarie, Filling Station, Thou Mayest, and probably a half dozen other local ones.

Honestly, KC is an underrated place for foodies, imo.

OK, apparently I'm not as nice of a guy as I think I am. When athletes (football or basketball mainly) leave KU, 99% of the time I'm like "Don't let the door hit you in the butt".

Most others on this site seem to have the warm and fuzzies for them whether they leave or not. I don't get it. I guess if they transfer to the St Francis Xavier's Green Herald International School in Bangladesh - ok, I'll get over it.

But what if they transfer to a school that we may face later in the year? In the Final Four maybe? Or what if they tranfer to K-State?

Convince me not to be scorned.

If they transfer to KSU, they won't be meeting us in the FF. And certainly wouldn't have ever started here.

I don't mind guys leaving who did their time and either were never going to see the floor or it just wasn't the right fit. Guys like Anrio Adams or BG who were knuckleheads, sure good riddance.

But Grimes, Cunliffe, Bragg, etc. Guys who came here and put in good work and it just wasn't a great fit, I wish no ill will. If they contributed to the team and are a part of KU basketball history in a positive way I see no reason to hate on them when they're gone.

@Crimsonorblue22 I'm not actually... I locked down a Jersey girl by accident.

I wish we were. Could have had the ceremony at the Cathedral and the Reception at Boulevard and it would have been basically the same price and a little nicer than what we will be doing in Jersey. Not that it won't be a nice Wedding! You just get more bang for your buck here than there.

Skip Jack Stack. My opinion... But yea definitely do Q39 or Joes. Gates has a couple near Downtown too. Gates is so hit or miss though and I abhor the way you order. But it's definitely an authentic KC experience lol.

I'm late, but here is your kcmatt guide to downtown (I live about a 10 minute walk from the Sprint Center).

I'll start with you first question, food near the arena:
- Parlor is awesome. It is sort of like a food court. But with phenomenal food and a bar. It's over by the Breweries and Distilleries.
- There is a newer restaurant owned by KC Joe's in Power and Light and it is solid. County Road Ice House is the name. It's like a bar food/BBQ hybrid.
- The Peanut is within a 15 minute walk. Maybe 20. But it's an experience. Just know the service is terrible and that's just kind of part of it lol. Come early and ready to drink a few beers before you get your food. It's a wings place.
- The Quaff is also pretty close. It's a divey sports bar with decent food and cheaper beer.
- Milwaukee Deli is good food. And then John's Big Deck is right there and it sells cheap beer so you can pregame. John's Food isn't terrible, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Other Bars for other nights:
- Green Lady Lounge (live Jazz every night). The Phoenix does too I believe, but it's a completely different atmosphere. I prefer Green Lady.
- There are like 5 (or more) breweries on 18th street. (I enjoy going to all of them except Double Shift.) My favorite though is Strange Line and it is in the River Market.
- If you're in need of a Dive Bar, there is the Quaff, Blue Line and then Kelly's if you need to kill a night. (Kelly's usually has a cover band on nights during the weekend and a small entry fee). John's Big Deck is also a lot of fun.
- Next to the Quaff there is a little Speakeasy called Hush, and then an arcade on the top of the building that is a really good time (and reasonably priced to get a bay).
- Up-Down is a lot of fun but gets crowded on weekends.
- Extra Virgin has very good happy hour deals.

Other food that's a little different:
- Beer Kitchen is my favorite brunch. I just really, really like their burgers.
- Mission Taco or KC Taco Company are good quick bites.
- Blvd Tavern is a good brunch with Bottomless Mimosas and Bloody's I think.
- La Bodega is a Tapas restaurant and can be a lot of fun.
- Chez Elle is a crepes place. I know it sounds weak, but you will leave full. It's very, very good.
- Baramee Thai Bistro is my go too for Thai.

If you need more suggestions feel free to shoot me a DM.

So not much has actually changed for Q other than he has the ball in his hands more. His 3pt % is almost exactly the same as last season.

@Kcmatt7 VT has 11 RB's on their roster and the leading rusher averaged 60 YPG. There is zero chance Herbert gets 100 YPG. If he thought the RB by committee at KU was bad he is in for a rude awakening.

I don't feel that's an accurate look at how carries were distributed for them, at all, but I also don't care to get into a semantic argument with you about it.

dylans said:

@Kcmatt7 👌 So VT’s running backs are bad? And he thinks he’ll get playing time there he couldn’t get here. Got it. I’m glad he’s gone if that’s the case. Sounds like he’s got a losers limp. It’d take a real man to bear the burden of being a KU football player.

I didn't say VTs RBs are bad.

But don't be shocked if you see Herbert be a 100+ YPG guy for them next season...

I just don't get mad at players for leaving. They have 4-5 years to do what is in their own best interest. They don't owe anyone anything.

What makes you think he wasn’t valued at KU? (Just curious). I was under the impression his sudden redshirt wasn’t even discussed with the coaching staff beforehand. I could see him thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, but he was getting on the field and fed the ball.

Pooka was getting 3 plays to his every 1.

I'm not saying that is the right or wrong decision from the coaches. Pooka is a stud.

But I can see how Herbert would want to go somewhere he saw the field at least 50/50 or more.

This is REALLY a good idea.

I had some FT woes in HS myself. This is sort of how I fixed it. I didn't shoot it immediately. I went through my normal routine, but I quit staring at the rim during it. Just looked up at the last second and found my spot. Worked for me.

I was at the game. Doke shot free throws nearly the entire warm-up session. He made most of them. He's trying to get better at them. He cares.
