@BShark project big, Mitch, McCormack. KU needs a 4 more than just any big.
Or, and hear me out, they go 4-guards for forever after Bill wins a Natty this year.
Frank Martin in games is wild. Everything else seems like he's a great person. His coaching tutorials really show he knows the game. Many of his interviews are good. He always did a good interview with the KC Radio guys.
I really like him and Huggins.

I just think if Bill called we could probably get them to listen.
KU did recruit him a little bit.
I haven't seen him since he left HS where he looked like an intriguing prospect. A modern big, a lot different from his Dad. I wonder how much his development was impacted by the Heart Issue and losing his freshman year. It's clear he didn't mesh with Cronin well enough to stick it out since he wasn't getting a lot of playing time. Will be interesting to see if he stays West where he's from or tries to find a different situation East.
Yea I think he still has his intrigue considering all of the things he's had to go through this year. And I think Cronin is such a smashmouth basketball guy. Even worse than Self or Tony Bennett. That is definitely not a natural fit for his skillset.
I do wonder if he's willing to leave the coast. It's likely he wouldn't have to. USC, Oregon, Arizona and Gonzaga would all be places he could go and would lean into his skillset.

I read the article. What she said wasn't necessarily bad. She shouldn't have said anything, but the newspaper was on the hunt for a quote and weren't getting it from the Admin. So they took advantage of a College Kid.
And the headline makes it sound worse than what she meant it to come off as I believe.
Again, I think the journos wrote this story and then found a person to give them any sort of quote that they could spin into the article. Full on smear job.
We aren't Baylor. But we aren't exactly a church choir either.
Most of this comes from just being under a microscope. We've made ourselves an easy target though too.
KSU, in my opinion, was just as much at fault for the incident. But that isn't what the media has said at all. The narrative has been "evil terrible bad cheating team coached by known villain Bill Self preys on measly weak innocent Wildcats team coached by civil rights activist Bruce Weber in backyard brawl."

I agree we don't need Ochai to always score. His defense has been mostly really good. Against K-St he was really aggressive and you could tell the difference in energy and he rebounded at a high level. The jump shot just looks so funky from catch to release (reminding of Garrett his first two seasons really). I would take the energy & aggressiveness from him most nights and be happy because I know in the flow of the game he's going to find a way to do some good things because effort is not a problem. I just really think he's a consistent jumper away from giving the team the 3rd option that teams cannot take away. You look at the teams that have defended KU the best, they can limit Doke's paint touches and pressure Dotson enough with help to take away his tremendous speed and driving ability but KU having that 3rd option that's going to consistently get you 10-15 a night would really be the cherry on top.
I want to see him add a post game. He's got 25 lbs, 2 or 3 inches height, and 5 or more inches vertical on some of these guys guarding him. I'd think he could really effectively bully some guys on the block.
I'd also like to see him shoot better, but he is shooting over .300 which for this team is actually pretty good lol. But I agree if he could find the consistency from beyond the arch we'd be better.

This team can still get to another level.
This is a dominant defense. Hopefully we can say Elite by season's end.
KU has two of the best players in the country at PG & C. Our C is improving by the week especially defensively.
Two reserves have cranked it up a notch (Moss & Braun) and they are our best shooters.
The wildcard is Ochai who's having in my opinion a mirror of Wayne Selden's 2nd year here. Whatever the staff has to do to find him a jumpshot needs to be explored.
This team isn't perfect but I'm hopeful
I said it before that I thought KU was the best looking team in the country.
And as you point out here, they have room to get better still. I'm really excited for Bill to be forced into 4-1 the next twelve games.
I think a positive way to look a the Ochai situation is that we don't necessarily always need him to score. Dotson, Doke, Moss and Braun should be enough fire power to win most games for the best defense ever in the Kenpom era.
And I really think we can still grow offensively. Basically everyone but Doke and Garrett are capable of being better at something on that end of the floor. Moss could play more in the flow. Braun could be more consistent and aggressive like he showed last game. Dotson could shoot better. Ochai needs to do basically everything better. Dave could finish better. Enaruna could finish MUCH better.
If they can go find a few more points a game and keep this defense I really think they win it all this year. And in a dominating fashion.

Kansan vs Kansan outside of the game is not healthy. It's fun to have a rivalry, but fans should remember we have to be united for bigger issues and opponents.
I'll root for KState over Alabama... or any SEC, ACC, etc opponent for that matter.
After the band fellatio, I quit rooting for KSU for anything. How their fans reacted to that is pitiful.
Same with this stupid fight. "He wAs JuSt PlAyInG tO tHe wHistLe."
They can't even accept that a single one of their players had anything to do with the situation. That maybe their bench shouldn't have reacted that way. I'm not trying to say Silvio was innocent. He was absolutely the main reason the scuffle started. But they literally can't own up to the smallest of things.
It's a repeat of the way they acted with the band thing.
"iT wAs StAr WaRs dAy."
No it was clearly a penis and if you'd at least own up to that I'd respect you.
So KSU can burn to the ground and I wouldn't care one single bit. I hate their fans. I hate where their school is located. I think their campus is ugly. I hate the way it smells there. I hate how fake "country" it is. I hate their colors. I hate EMAW because it sounds like a donkey noise. I hate the stupid thing they do at games where it looks like everyone is practicing giving a BJ.
Frankly, I hate everything about KSU. And I hope that during the next conference realignment they get relegated to the Mountain West where they belong.
Bill is going to win the tourney this year just to shut everyone up.
And next season all you're going to hear about from all the talking heads is how good of a coach Self is and how good of a program he runs here in Kansas.
It's almost too perfect.
We won’t even talk about this in March.
Don’t steal the ball at the end. None of this happens. If you wanna be a dick, expect it right back.
If Silvio hasn’t picked up a chair I’d say he didn’t even deserve a suspension. But he did. So 1 game sounds fair in my book. (I’m sure it’ll be more).
It's like a small cap stock trying to convince wall street they've really changed and are ready to go up.
Nobody believes you until you actually file a 10-Q that shows you are cash flow positive.
KU needs to prove itself on the field. It's that simple. It's hard to do without a QB. But Les is just going to have to either find a diamond in the rough or develop one on the roster. I thought Franks would have been a great fit, but if he'd rather get shit stomped by SEC defensive lineman every week that's his prerogative. I do think Dearmon having an entire offseason to fully implement his system will show up on the field. I like his RPO scheme and I think once that is the main focus for reps leading into the season we will see it really pop.

Care to dive further on this?
KU moves to the #1 spot.
Baylor is #3.
WVU is #4.
Duke and KU have a significant gap between them and the rest of the teams.
I think probably the craziest thing is that the B12 has a legitimate shot at getting 3 of the top 8 spots this year. A decent shot at two #1s...
A good look for the league.
I think Dotson being out for a few games could end up being a positive long-term. It's going to force guys to step up that otherwise wouldn't have. If Ochai, Moss and Garrett all gain some confidence with him out of the lineup, look out.
Sort of like the Chiefs having to find a way to win without Mahomes for a few games. The defense figured out some things about themselves during that stretch and when Pat got back we went on a tear.
Hopefully this is a similar effect. We have to find a way to generate offense from the other guard positions. And you can't bank on Moss hitting 6 threes every night, but it was good to see. Garrett going for 15 and literally blowing by whoever he wanted to was impressive. But to really have a shot to win it all we still need to get Ochai going some way some how.
Bill Self is the most stubborn man alive. (I'm 2nd).
BShark said:
@kjayhawks Passing is a huge concern too.
Bingo. I was at the game. I kept asking myself why the hell do they not fake the entry pass one time and skip the ball across to the open shooter/driver?
Basic math tells you if 3 guys are crashing on Doke, and one is guarding you, 2 guys are open. This team can't live and die by how opponents guard Doke. It's too easy of a game plan. They need to learn to share the ball better.
Luckily, I think Bill needed an asswhooping like this to come up with a plan B for the offense. Losing to a Scot Drew team that beat you straight up playing M2M defense is embarrassing. I couldn't imagine how hurt his pride is right now.
I was going to say, if Hinch isn't fired than I don't see the deterrent here.
Cora is about to have an anvil dropped on his head from the top of the Empire State Building.
Scott Drew NCOY lock
The defense is suffocating.
Doke is a huge part of the reason the D is better this year than last. A Self defense requires a shot blocker at C, imo. Without one we are giving up easy looks at the rim and outside.
Then you have the length of Garrett, Ochai, Braun, and Enaruna denying passing lanes and Dotson jumping in them.
This is just a good team. I haven't seen anyone better this year. I feel like we pissed down our leg both losses this year. 10 unforced turnovers in MSG against Duke. The off-game in Philly (Seriously, where was Dotson's head at that day? 5-15 from the field and a final 2 minutes that was super uncharacteristic).
If I were betting on a team to win 6 games in a row right now I'd bet on us.
Shaka's saving grace is his contract still has quite a few dollars on it.
Beard's buyout within the B12 is $6M. Idk if Texas will be willing to pay that or not. I'd lean towards not. And that also saves Shaka.

Tsheibwe is what I expected SDS to be this season.
This is where not having two actual PGs really hurts. Denying Dot the ball and forcing others to get us into the offense. Killing us.
Arguably Landen Lucas. Just because of how much he developed from Year 1 to Year 5.

At this point Silvio is the last guy on the roster. Never would have guessed that going into the season.
Unbelievable. Expected him to come in and be a monster. All mental. It's like the game never slowed down for him.
Wilson isn't ready to contribute. You can dream, but him playing less than 5 minutes per game isn't worth burning his redshirt. He isn't a knockdown shooter. He is a cinderblock feet defender. He's a below the rim player. I thought he was a project when he signed. Honestly, I pegged him as a transfer candidate because I thought he'd see no minutes come conference play, get pissed, and leave.
At this point, you might as well play 4 guards instead of Wilson because they'll be better defensively and, in my opinion, better offensively. Wilson has a long ways to go before he should ever see the floor. He will have to develop a finesse game on offense and I'm not sure he'll ever develop enough defensively that we won't get frustrated by him.
The gain to playing him and burning his redshirt is minimal. Keeping him here 4 full years and him walking out with a Master's Degree is the smart move. And I think Jalen and Self will come to that conclusion.
Did Franks end up visiting anyone else?
Better to have games on ESPN+ than on Time Warner that half of the Metro Area doesn't get.
Are those my only two choices?

We have to take this carnage seriously.
Aren’t we at a bit of an impasse here Politically? Guns are supposed to fend off violence. At least one side says that.
The other says they create violence.
What is your solution for taking the carnage seriously? If you can’t take guns away, what is the solution? More policing hasn’t proven to be more effective after a certain point.
What’s your big idea to take it more seriously?

@BShark I don't think the internet is ever going away. It's fused with our identity. It may fuel the rise of authoritarianism because the threat of death is a powerful motivator to willingly abandon the internet. Dictators are like strict nannies when freewill isn't working out.
I would like to see more resorts and public spaces advertise as deliberately "no devices". Turn in your connected devices at the door.
We are having an “unplugged” wedding. No phones allowed, at least not within our site lol. We have a photographer and a Photobooth and a videographer and a DJ and an open bar. You do not need to be on your phone for any reason.
When I was abroad for a semester, I didn’t have a phone. Best time of my life. Met more people, made closer friends, had more fun. The internet is an amazing invention but it has made us far less personable.
I just want someone in who is going to crack down on corporations.
It is two-fold. We are watching regulations get repealed right now that nobody is even talking about. Food, energy, and banking have all had major regulations repealed. This is where that part of the Constitution where it says Promote the General Welfare comes in to play. Companies are not people. They should not be treated as people. They should not have the same rights as people. And we should make them play by rules that do protect people.
They should also be taxed correctly. We should not provide yearly welfare to companies. If a company needs tax breaks in order to survive, it was never a viable company.
I've talked to people about this and they ask "what will happen to my 401k if you crack down on corporations?" The answer is absolutely nothing. The economy will still grow. You will still get dividends because the board and the CEO will want their money. The only thing that might happen is we watch them reduce some of their cash reserves. Which is a positive.
The current path we are on that is pushing the economy up is unsustainable. I'm so confident a regulation of some sort will be repealed by this administration that results in the next economic collapse that I'd bet my own 401K on it. "People have a choice" is not where this comes in to play. Sure, make shitty lightbulbs that cost a fortune in energy. People can have that choice and cost themselves money if they want I suppose. What I'm talking about is things like Pork regulations that are a hazard to human health with no change to package labeling. Sure if someone wants to buy shit covered pork, they should have that right. But I should know it is shit covered pork before I buy it. (This is a real thing, and it struck a cord with me as someone who smoked about a dozen pork butts a year).Or Mortgage regulations that still allow for people with terrible credit to buy houses out of their price-range and resulted in the housing collapse.
Short-term profits don't mean anything. It's what we tell people all the time. "Pay your dues." We should practice it. If we were to overhaul some of our regulations, and the corporate tax code, sure we would see some slow growth for a very short period of time. It would be followed, though, by a period of long-term sustainable growth built on a foundation that doesn't allow for huge economic swings like we've seen the past decade.
But we won't make these sort of decision because we only think in 4-year periods, so I suppose I'll just end my soapbox rant right here.
Results are a funny thing.
They don't always tell the truth.
KU has an elite defense this year. Period. No matter the philosophy, KU is long and athletic and disrupting opponents.
But that doesn't mean they couldn't be better than the results have shown so far this year. We are capable of dominating on defense. We have the depth, length and size to matchup with anyone. The question is, why don't we do it? I do, to an extent, understand Bill not wanting to change. He wants the other team to adjust to us. The problem with that, is basketball has changed. The three point bombing from 4-5 positions on the floor is changing the game much like the Spread Offense did in College Football.
But here we are, and Bill is still trying to run the Wishbone on offense while running a 46 Bear to stop the run.
Imagine if Tony Bennett or Jay Wright had our roster. They would have this group with the #1 defense and it wouldn't even be close. Ochai, Enaruna, Braun and Garrett are all plus rebounders for their position/size. So there is no need to play a true big at the 4. They would pressure the ball relentlessly and force you to drive the ball and shoot a contested layup. They wouldn't give up 3s. They'd force you to shoot over the wingspan of our 6'5 guards and pressure the hell out of passing lanes so that the offense had no flow and terrible ball movement.
The only reason this team isn't the #1 defensive team in the country right now is Bill Self will not adapt. He may be able to overcome it and win a NC. I believe that. But his stubbornness is one of the roadblocks.
He's a great coach. But he could still be better.
I think this is a complex issue not defined solely by one's skin color. But, I have an opinion on that as well that I will share further on in my post.
One, I think the cycle of poverty is a legitimate thing. I have seen people stuck in this first-hand. It is a much harder thing to break out of than we think. I could dive into this further if we wanted to. But breaking out of poverty is very very difficult.
Two, studies have shown that poor white people are just as likely to commit crimes as poor black people. Nearly no difference whatsoever. (https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/hpnvv0812.pdf) ↗
These two things combined are why it doesn't surprise me that we simply assume the inner cities have issues simply based upon "culture." I do not believe that "black culture" is a violent culture or that a black man is inherently more violent than a white man.
Where I see the cultural difference is in the number of single-parent homes. Some of this is based off of personal experience. I will admit that. Some of this opinion is based on statistics. Black families are more likely to be of a single-parent home than any other race, by far. This is statistically a fact. And it isn't even close to any other race in the U.S. This is the main issue facing the black community in my opinion. Until that issue is addressed internally, nothing will change.
More policing isn't the answer. Assuming someone is violent because they're black isn't the answer. The issue of inner city violence goes deeper than just skin color.
