Miles Emery - #2 player in the state out of Overland Park.

2018 Kansas Jayhawks Football Recruiting • Jun 06, 2017 04:25 PM

Bowen landed a stud DE apparently...

@AsadZ Problem is, what are you really going to get? Hosmer, you could argue, is better to just let finish the season. We would get a compensatory pick for him. The way Moose is hitting HR's he probably would get us one as well. Cain and Vargas are the only two guys you would 100% get rid of as they won't fetch you anything in the offseason.

Midseason trades for prospects rarely work out well, to be honest. Royals lucked out with Cain and Esky and Odirizzi who we flipped for Davis and Shields. But, that was for a Cy Young level pitcher. We don't have that value to sell right now. We would be looking at mid-tier prospects years away from playing most likely for almost anybody we offer. Vargas being the exception. And his value is most likely to skyrocket at the last minute as teams in the hunt get in a bidding war, not to get him, but to keep him from going somewhere else.

@AsadZ Didn't say don't trade. Just said don't trade yet. Wait until the deadline and then unload everyone if you're out of it.

@kjayhawks I have no idea who will fill that spot. They really only have two options. Put in a place holder like Crean. Or pay top dollar and get a guy like Marshall. They got in the game too late to go after an up an comer. If I was them, I'd take a long look at Romar. At least he can recruit some talent. I think if you could get him for $1.5M a year you'd take him. Especially with being so close to Chicago and New York. If he doesn't land recruits in his first recruiting season next year, you move on and go for a young guy. If he lands some studs, see if it plays out. This is there lowest risk with highest reward.

Just my thoughts... OSU is a good job. But, this is a tough spot to be in as an AD.

@HighEliteMajor I would say that KU got the better financial deal with both of those schools. WSU and MU would want better splits than KU would give them.

Just my assumption of course.

My opinion though, we should play both of them every season. UK plays UL every single year. And the fans go nuts over it. I miss getting riled up. I cried after KU lost a game to mizzou once. I get that pit of nervousness I only get during the tourney when we play them. KU vs. MU not being played is a slap in the face to the fans.

I think WSU would change their tune after KU put a couple of good spankings on them. It isn't like they have always wanted to play us. They only want to play us because they are good right now. In 5 years or whenever Greg Marshall is gone, what happens to WSU? Let's not prop up a program that doesn't deserve it. If WSU goes on a 10 year stretch through multiple coaches and proves that it is the program that is successful and not the coach, maybe I would change my tune.

We started winning with fresh blood. Guys who were having fun to be there and play. This team wasn't having fun in April. They are having fun and winning again.

By some miracle, the Royals are only 6 games back. And only 7 games from getting back to even.

If Gordo and Esky could get on a little roll too we might actually get on a serious streak.

But, with Karns out another week and Duff out another 7 weeks we are still looking at a long shot.

With the division in reach, I have officially changed my mind on selling... for now. Wait until the deadline or 10 games out of first place. Whichever comes first.

I also think, that if we are within 5 games at the deadline, we don't sell. Screw it. Everyone here would rather see an exciting August and September than crap for the next 3 seasons regardless of who we trade.

Final thought, Mondesi has been hitting like a maniac in AAA. Here is his line:

  • .319 BA
  • 4 HR (HR per 28.25 AB)
  • 3 3B
  • 7 2B
  • 17 RBI
  • .361 OBP
  • 12 SB

Problem stats:
- 25% K-Rate
- 5% Walk rate

If we are still in it, and he continues this for another month and Esky continues sucking for another month, it'll be time to bring Mondesi up. If we are out of it though, let Esky have his last tour with KC. That way Mondesi can have a full season of hitting the ball well and get a little swagger.

Apparently announced he was done after this season do to declining health. After that caught wind, he must have upset a donor or something. Announced retirement today.

It was time for him to go anyways. Couldn't even fill the roster for next season. Losing players to out of state teams. He lost it. Happens sometimes. Was probably because of his health mainly too, which is always sad to see.

@wrwlumpy I feel like this gets said every year about our schedule. And by the end of the season we are almost always a top 10 in SOS. Mainly because the mid-majors we play ARE in the top one or two of their conference by the end of the season. I feel like we always do a great job getting tough experienced mid-major teams in.

I'd almost rather start us slow and build up to it like Kentucky does. Let guys gel together and figure out what rotations work the best. Who plays better with who. But doing that always makes it harder to land the #1 seed to. Sort of a catch-22.

NBA's three shot foul epidemic. • Jun 05, 2017 03:55 PM

Don't put your hands on the offensive player. Defense has just gotten worse. And with an emphasis on 3pt shooting, teams are closing out harder and fouling more outside the paint.

It isn't an issue of players just keep their hands up like they are supposed to. It is a problem caused by lazy defense.

Two And Done New Law Of The Land? • Jun 05, 2017 03:41 PM

@jaybate-1.0 Other ways around it. Not likely the athletes would win. Baseball has the best system currently. I see basketball following those steps soon enough.

Essentially, if you aren't good enough to go right out of high school than you need to go to College for 2 or 3 seasons. Drafted players should be allowed to go to college if they don't like where they were drafted and believe they can improve their draft stock in school.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 03:19 PM

@BeddieKU23 Yea was sad to see Brangers leave. Perfect guy to bring off the bench when the team is struggling to score. Instant offense.

That Western Kentucky team could be decent this year...

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 02:55 PM

@BShark I think Tech is the dark horse. 5 seniors. Added a couple of play now JUCO guys. Could be experienced and deep.

@elpoyo I've thought the same thing before. But then you realize, she has put a ton of Pro's in the league. And have had hardly any injury trouble in the time since she has been here. And at this point, her pedigree speaks for itself. It is a selling point on recruits that we have an amazing strength trainer.

KC Chiefs category...? • Jun 05, 2017 02:41 PM

@mayjay I agree with @BShark. Not a big Watson fan. Don't think he has the arm to ever amount to much. He has the potential for an RG3 or Vince Young Rookie season. But after that, I predict a fall out.

Mahomes is a coin flip. Either he is the next Brett Favre or he is the next Heath Shuler. I'd rather take my shot with the upside.

Watson is, at best, Russell Wilson. At worst, I'm not sure there is a bust comparison. I don't think he even makes it through the entire season as the starter to be quite honest. I just don't want another game manager, unless he is Tom Brady.

KC Chiefs category...? • Jun 05, 2017 02:18 PM

@kjayhawks I'm not sure Mahomes was a great pick either, but I'm at least glad to see us try to get a QB with more upside than Smith. I think a year of grooming by Andy will do wonders for him. I mean, honestly, has Reid ever actually missed on a QB? He made Folk look like a stud. Kevin Colb look like the next great QB. He won 5 games in a row after bringing Jeff Garcia back from the dead.

I mean, the guy is a freak when it comes to the QB position. And he hasn't had an arm talent like Mahomes since McNabb.

The Venezuelan Socialist Diet • Jun 05, 2017 02:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I agree with that. But that doesn't solve the problem of the entire country being split on major social issues. Which, is a major cause of political tension we see right now.

I'm just saying that if you gave states more power, everyone would get more of a say in how they get to live their lives.

I 100% agree with term limits though.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • Jun 05, 2017 02:05 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I think he is assuming we play 4 guards instead of playing Lightfoot. Which I would assume myself. I hope Mitch proves me wrong. But today, Svi could play in the post as well as Lightfoot.

NBA playoffs • Jun 02, 2017 06:41 PM

@Lulufulu Going to be a different game in #2 as long as Cavs make adjustments they are supposed to.

Have to play at a snails crawl. Iso shots with 4 players getting back on every shot. No crashing the offensive board. Anyone taking a shot besides Love, Irving or James better be a dunk or last second forced shot.

Defensively, Cavs just need to rebound. Don't look for transition points at all. Slow the game all the way down, no second shot attempts.

You have to hold the Warriors to under 100 if the Cavs are going to win. Limit shot attempts and don't let there be a rhythm to the game. Make it ugly.

Otherwise Warriors run away with it in 4 or 5.

KC Chiefs category...? • Jun 02, 2017 03:08 PM

@dylans Its a good problem if Mahomes is HOF level. It is a very very bad problem if he is anything less than that.

The Venezuelan Socialist Diet • Jun 02, 2017 02:49 PM

Until we have term limits, nobody will be doing what is best for the country. We will continue to have short-sided, small-minded ideas that cost us twice as much money because all we do is repeal and replace every law either side puts in. The pettiness will only increase. As will the waste of tax payer dollars. We need to restructure the government to take away power from individuals. We may not have a tyrant, but we have gotten to a point where we are too top heavy as far as power goes. We allow 546 men and women to make decisions that effect 326 million people. And we pay them handsomely to do so. So they have no incentive to leave. Just an incentive to do whatever they can to stay in office. Its atrocious.

What we need is a truly unselfish leader to rise to the top and introduce term-limits and give states more power to instill laws that matter to each state. We should never decide another social issue at the federal level again. Let states vote and live how they like. Keep the military strong and keep states in check. That's all we need the feds to do.

.0001% of the population makes decisions for 100% of the population. It just isn't right.

@Lulufulu Its only Nike sponsored teams so they won't invite KU. And, I guess it could happen that way.... If Nike ponies up more money per win in the tournament. I mean, it is all about the money. It could be the start of the end for the NCAA and they don't even see it coming.

KC Chiefs category...? • Jun 02, 2017 01:42 PM

@dylans If some of these picks don't pan out, Chiefs will be without a defense in 2 seasons. They will have Houston, Berry and Peters all on huge long-term contracts by then. So not much wiggle room with the cap. Draft picks will have to land at ILB and the inside DL. If Chris Jones or Tyreke Hill continue to trend upwards, all of a sudden we are in a really tough spot after two years... You can't keep them all.

@jayballer54 Well Keegan is wrong lol.

If Bender has a season as good as Buchele or Hill, my goodness. KU would be an 8 win team with a TD to interception ration of 21-11 or 23-8. I don't expect that from Bender though. But, if he can throw 20 TDs (which is definitely possible), we might even win a 5th game. We only threw 16 as an entire team last season. Only had 11 rushing TDs too, which is also really low.

I expect us to finish last in the Big XII again. But barely. And I expect some close games at home. I think we are only one more year away from seeing some special things from this team.

Next season will be a crap shoot. UT, TCU, Tech, OU, WVU and Baylor could all have solid teams. That is the reason KU has won so many titles in a row. Solid programs up and down the league, beat up on each other too much.

Why Self and other recruit OADs • Jun 01, 2017 08:30 PM

https://www.seccountry.com/kentucky/kentucky-basketball-recruiting-john-calipari-one-and-done ↗

Its from Cal's mouth, but I think it says a lot about why the top tier programs don't go after guys ranked 25-100 like they do the top 1-25.

KC Chiefs category...? • Jun 01, 2017 08:02 PM

Biggest question to me is our front 7. No Poe, recovering DJ and Houston. If our D isn't in the top 10 we have no shot at making the playoffs. Part of the reason I didn't like our 2nd round pick. Looks like an NFL body, but he doesn't look like he can make any impact this year at all.

Dorsey's wheeling and dealing during the draft is something I really liked, but if he misses on a lot of these guys it really makes him look bad.

KU vs Fizzou? • May 30, 2017 07:37 PM

I think the chance to renew it passed. Should have played the last two years. MU at KU in football and KU at MU in basketball. Could have given both schools an easy win and an even nicer revenue bump.

But now, KU football is on the rise and MU basketball has potential this year. No reason for either program to risk an embarrassment.

Everyone sleeping on Newman and Buke... Just wait.

Doke Update • May 26, 2017 06:25 PM

@wrwlumpy I'm sure this isn't the first time Hudy has had to work around an injury.

Not like his #1 worry is upper body strength. Its being able to play 30 minutes. Whether it is fouls or stamina.... But either way, him playing 30 minutes a game is only important come tourney time. And I have full confidence that Bill can get him to that point over the next 10 months.

Doke Update • May 26, 2017 01:09 PM

Everyone kept bringing up his conditioning. I kept thinking, it's just a wrist injury. And our strength coach is Hudy. What do these people think he is doing? Literally nothing?

Big12/SEC Challenge • May 25, 2017 03:16 PM

I honestly thought that MU would get put up against KU this year. Our brass must have said absolutely not.

@justanotherfan I feel pretty good about Pelicans landing a stud Free Agent in one of the next two offseasons. They have plenty of Cap room.

@JayHawkFanToo Of course the owners were against giving the Laker's Chris Paul.... Funny thing, if you look at what Charlotte would have gotten from the Lakers deal, it was significantly better than what they got for the Clippers deal. You can see that here ↗.

Hornets/Pelicans don't have a SINGLE player on their team still from that trade. Could have had Goran Dragic and Kevin Martin partnered with AD.

We can agree to disagree about KobE. What GM wouldn't commit to him long-term? And good luck keeping someone with such an ego in check.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • May 25, 2017 01:42 PM

This team has motivation. 6 guys have the potential to get drafted in 2018. Expect them to play like studs. We will have a mismatch to exploit every single game. Either a poor defender on Newman, a bad pick and roll post DG can destroy, a short frontline on Doke, a slow post Preston can run circles around, or a short guard trying to defend Svi or Vick.

At this moment, only two teams have the players to matchup with us 1-5. That is Kentucky and Arizona.

@jaybate-1-0 I'm starting to hypothesize that this almost Mafia-like behind the scenes recruiting was created because of the institution of the OAD rule.

@jaybate-1-0 The more I read, the more I'm starting to see that everyone is cheating. If you are a player ranked in the top 50 you are getting paid by someone.

And Nike making $300M in revenue just from LeBron's shoes, makes me realize why they put so much money and effort into it. To me though, it is actually more of a trickle down effect. Shoe Co. pays Shoe Rep. (WWWes) Shoe Rep pays Agent. Agent pays player. Shoe Co. needs at least 2 degrees of separation for deniability. WWWes found a loophole to bypass the agent. Goes directly to players. Makes him 25 times as valuable as any other agent or shoe rep. He gets to deliver the money pitches directly to the players from Shoe Co.

All I know, the more I dig, the more I believe Calipari has been gifted some amazing athletes. It might not be techinically cheating, but it is as close to being cheating as it could be. I've made it through his Memphis years. I'm about to start looking into UMass. Can't imagine that Marcus Camby landing there was an accident... Not with UConn on him. His home state. Of whom he was a fan of. And said he wanted to play in state. I don't care what momentum you have, an A10 school shouldn't be landing top 10 recruits out of state.

@jaybate-1.0 http://nypost.com/2016/06/19/inside-the-shadiness-of-the-nba-draft/ ↗

My answer would be yes, it appears agents have a pretty strong influence. Who was negotiating for Wiggins reported Adidas contract BEFORE he was on KU's campus? Pretty sure he isn't negotiating for himself...

In case you didn't know... • May 24, 2017 04:18 PM

@kjayhawks Rick Pitino before the season said that Embiid was the best player in the class. He was pissed he missed out on him.

@JayHawkFanToo Oh and Kobe did screw the Lakers by running other players out of town. LA is a destination city that couldn't draw stud Free Agents. Kobe running players out of town cause LA to lose top players for nothing. Something you can't do in the NBA.

You can't lose a stud without getting a valuable asset back. Because once they leave, you can't sign a free agent if it takes you over the salary cap. You had a guy with Bird rights, but once he leaves you don't. So you can't spend over the Salary Cap.

That kicked LA in the ass. Nobody good wanted to play with Kobe. So you signed 2nd tier guys to contracts that filled up the cap because they are required to spend 98% of the salary cap due to the CBA. Which is what put LA in contract hell. Until now that is.

@justanotherfan Pelicans with an AD and Cousins duo for years to come is up there for me. They are one piece away from being a contender.

@JayHawkFanToo Yet he let him get traded to the Clippers only 6 days later?

Nope. Don't buy it.

@justanotherfan I think you're missing my point.

Would you rather have Lonzo Ball or Chris Paul?

Would you rather have Chris Paul, Paul George and someone like Deandre Jordan or LaMarcus Aldridge?

Or would you rather have Ball, George and X?

And, you are right. LA is attractive to free agents. Which proves my point to why Kobe screwed them so badly at the end. His contract prevented them from working around the salary cap to bring in other stud free agents and his personality didn't help any.

@justanotherfan Laker's are bad because of Kobe and Stern. Nobody wanted to play with him. Ran Shaq and Gasol out of town. Then created a financial burden that didn't allow them to sign star free agents, not like any of the good ones wanted to play with him anyways.

On top of that, the Lakers lined up a trade to have Chris Paul and the trade gets blocked. Stern basically ended the Laker's future right then and their. Imagine a team next year with Chris Paul and Paul George. What 3rd free agent wouldn't want to play with that pair? Does KD go to the Laker's when Chris Paul is there instead of Golden State? Does LeBron go to LA instead of Clevland?

Dwindling Big 12 Basketball • May 23, 2017 07:49 PM

@BeddieKU23 It would be one hell of a steal this late in the recruiting season.
