@BeddieKU23 I would have thought that we were out of the running, but if new guys are getting involved I don't see why we wouldn't throw our hat in the ring at least.
@JayHawkFanToo I mean maybe if it is Virginia vs. Wisconsin :joy:
@BeddieKU23 Good. Big XII needs it. Hope Texas has a great season.
It looks very likely to me that Frank falls to a less than stellar team. But, the Spurs are sitting at 59 if he falls that far. Would have to pass Philly 4 times, Knicks twice, Nuggets twice, Magic twice, Suns twice, New Orleans and the Nets to get there though. And Mocks have Spurs taking a PG with the 29th pick. So I just don't think Frank will make it there.
I think there is a real shot he and Josh actually do both end up in Philly. Also think Hamidou Diallo ends up in Philly.... But that is another story.
One more note, Caleb Swanigan, another Naismith finalist, is projected to be drafted in the 2nd round as well. Blows my mind. Talk about a steal around pick 40. Draymond Green twin.
@JayHawkFanToo Oh gotcha gotcha.
Don't you think that would be more fun to watch though? Essentially you have 36 minutes to build as big of a lead as possible. Then you finish the game by actually having to score points.
Sounds more entertaining to me than hack-a-shaq or a team running 4 corners. Gets boring watching guys standing around before they hoist up a terrible shot right before the shot clock goes off and then they don't score an actual basket the last 5 minutes of the game just hoping that time runs out.
@justanotherfan I guess, but pace would be kept with a shot-clock still.
I'm not saying this will ever get instituted. But, there needs to be something done about end of game fouls. It is not something the inventor of basketball saw coming, I'm sure.
@JayHawkFanToo Unless you make it so once you reach minute 36, you can't foul out anymore. Teams aren't just going to hack either, because you don't want to put a team on the line for a free bucket when they only need 7 points.
@Crimsonorblue22 These guys look pretty Oafie to me!!! :joy:
@Crimsonorblue22 Kaun, Aldrich, Withey... All pretty much Oafs. But very good important pieces to some great KU teams.
@Crimsonorblue22 It's a word. I mean I don't know what else I'd call doke :laughing:
@BeddieKU23 I just don't see who would draft him at this point. He can't shoot in games. He has average to poor measurables.
His best option is to come back to school and shoot 50+% from trey. Prove that he has the floor of a 3-point role guy with some potential upside as he is a 6'7 shooting guard who can be a a mismatch against smaller 2's if he can ever learn to finish in the lane efficiently.
I think Svi still has the potential to be the shooting guard version of a guy like Chandler Parsons. No uber-athlete, but athetic enough and a good enough shooter to set up the drive. Finishing in the lane is key though.
Personnel-wise we are very similar to a traditional Bill Self KU team. Big oaf at Center, athletic 4, drive-capable PG and 2 spot up shooters in Newman and Vick/Svi.
This might be the best starting 5 we've ever had as far as talent goes. At least that's my opinion. NBA talent at all 5 spots. A potential for 4 first round picks and 6 total being drafted. I don't see Svi and Vick both going in the 1st round. One will prevent the other. And DG won't be a first rounder at this point either. Unless he goes all Buddy Hield. But Buke, Preston and Newman are almost sure-fire 1st rounders if they perform like I expect them to.
We will definitely need to run some 4 guard for short stretches. But we are athletic enough to do that. Cunliffe will be that guy I think. Heard a lot about how athletic he is from my manager buddy. Like freak athlete. So as long as he can stretch the floor with spacing and defend, we have that option.
I don't see this team losing more than 5 games all season the way they are built. Have the personnel to pound it in the post and follow it up with a trey. Depth is the only concern. Can't have any major injuries. Especially Doke and DG. They are irreplaceable.
@justanotherfan I'm confused as to what you are saying won't work. The situation you described is exactly what we want to happen.
Instead of holding the ball in the corner and getting fouled, you're more likely to take the open 3. Much more exciting.
And teams won't foul to put you at the line because all you need is 7 more points, so every point counts.
@JayHawkFanToo http://www.kuathletics.com/documents/2016/11/17//KAI_Audit_Report_2016.pdf?id=6190 ↗
Look at the financial statements yourself. KU sells less in licensing than UK. The only way we make up the lost revenue, you guessed it, our Apparel Sponsorship.... I'd call that paying a premium.
@JayHawkFanToo yea let me know when you find it...
What other licensing do you think is going on? Most of the contracts with Nike or Adidas are actually structured so only a certain amount of licensed gear by other companies can be produced. At least as far as apparel goes. So, do you think that Iowa sells that many more branded lawn chairs? Coasters? Koozies? Golf Polo's? Chair Backs? What is their huge boom in licensing income?
My figures are accurate. You just don't want to accept defeat. Adidas pays a premium because they have to. I know this, because I know about the contract negotiations with the school. I know about it because I worked for a company that is involved with every major college in the country. I was directly told, Adidas has to pay a premium. And clearly, that premium is close to $1.5M. But believe what you want. Somehow KU negotiated the greatest shoe deal in history, despite their crappy market and lower sales than other Nike schools... Whoever negotiated that contract should get the bonus themselves.
@approxinfinity I think the best move LeBron could have made was making a switch PF and letting Wiggins play the 3. I think they would be built much better to take on the Warriors in the finals. But at the same time, you just never know how a rookie would fit or develop. Wiggins certainly isn't the defensive player or rebounder that I expected him to be. Love was a safe move and LeBron knew the recipe for winning from Miami. Him plus a scoring guard and a stretch 4 and you can really do some damage.
Part of the reason that those guys have to come with LeBron is because they can be signed and he is comfortable with them. Once you go over the salary cap, the only guys you can sign from free agency are league minimum deals. So you are literally sifting through dead bodies in search of vets with maybe just a little life left. Or at least a tool that can be used in certain situations. The NBA cap rules are by far the strangest of any professional sport. I personally think that the Cavs have the best roster in the league depth wise. Nobody else would have Derrick Williams as the last guy off of their bench. Whoever is in charge of their roster has assembled quite a unit. Albeit, an aging one.
I mean if Kyrie and Love went down, their lineup would look like:
- PG - Deron Williams - Former All-Star
- SG - Kyle Korver/JR Smith - Korver is shooting as good now as ever before
- SF - LeBron
- PF - Richard Jefferson/Channing Frye - Huge upgrade over Mozgov
- C - Tristan Thompson
That team could make the playoffs right there.
When they started the season though, they didn't have Korver or Deron Williams. Those were huge mid-season pickups.
@Statmachine We definitely did! I hope Shaka can keep the studs rolling through. Big XII needs him to.
@JayHawkFanToo http://www.businessinsider.com/college-sports-revenue-leaders-2015-9 ↗ Here is the link. It is actually from a reputable source.
First of all, your logic is lacking on multiple levels.
-
- KU doesn't need to sell $4M. They would only need to increase about $1.5M in sales because that is what they would lose switching back to Nike. And I do think KU could sell close to $1.5M more if they switched to Nike. If you consider even a slight bias toward purchasing Nike gear, that would make up a considerable amount of revenue. Then, you have to consider the fact that Adidas doesn't have the sourcing power that Nike does due to the fact that Nike is everywhere and Adidas is spotty. When I worked for the KUStore, we didn't get new football gear until the 3rd game of the season and we didn't get new basketball gear until November. That is a significant amount of lost revenue just from poor sourcing. I also subbed in to work at ISU to make extra cash a few times, they had Basketball gear for the new season in August. Nike ALREADY had stuff at ISU before the season even started. A huge difference.
-
- Your market size theory doesn't do it for me either. Iowa outsells KU by $5M and they only have a 200k population advantage and haven't even sniffed success lately. They had one decent football season and a 2nd half collapse of a basketball season in the time frame the link measures. Yet they sell a ton more because they are Nike. And they even have a larger in state competition than KU does for apparel with ISU right down the road...
-
- If KU sells less than UK in gear, why does KU get more money? You said it yourself, we are a small market in the Midwest. Yet we demand an almost identical Nike contract and a significantly better Adidas contract. Almost defies logic...
-
- It doesn't matter how much Nike sells or Adidas overall. I'm breaking this down per school. So that is irrelevant for any fact other than that Nike is a better run company that people clearly have a bias towards.
Also, the Wiggins contract before school was quoted that amount because he was looked at as the best high school prospect since LeBron James. He did not perform like LeBron James in a KU uniform. It drove his value down. LeBron got $90M coming out of High School. Wiggins would have gotten a similar monster deal if he could have jumped straight to the pros. That type of money used to fly around when players could go straight to the pros. It doesn't anymore. It will one day, when the next generational player emerges. But Wiggins wasn't that. He got about what he deserved, and it was from Adidas still. Which is the fact that matters most.
Ok, you got me on Rush.
And you got me on a technicality on the word Illegal. Good job. I meant, he would be ineligible, not that he would get arrested. Which he would, if he had a sponsorship deal in place before hand and admitted that was the reason he chose a school. And just because the Wiggins deal was less than projected, doesn't mean there wasn't an arrangement beforehand. The amount is irrelevant.
Are you ignoring the profit that I pointed out or what? Because that was a major piece of my post. But, that doesn't fit your narrative. So let's ignore it... Fact is, Nike sells more gear. They don't need to offer a huge contract to some schools. The increased gear sales head and shoulder's make up for it. Kentucky made $4m more off of licensing last year than KU did. Thank goodness for our donor base or we wouldn't even be in the Top 25 of college athletics revenue.
@justanotherfan Amen.
@approxinfinity How you could like Jordan and not like LeBron based on what you said is astounding. Jordan was far from a "complete person." His arrogance is well-documented. He was much more self-centered on the court than LeBron has ever been. MICHAEL JORDAN PUNCHED STEVE KERR IN THE FACE. He routinely laid into Horace Grant and Stacey King. Pippen had migrains and Jordan would give him crap for them. When Jordan does these things he is "the greatest competitor ever." When LeBron does them, he is an asshole treating our poor Mario badly. If Bron had punched Mario, I could only imagine the outrage.
That is just on the court. Do we want to talk about extracurricular activities? Jordan's gambling problems have been well-documented. As have his extramarital affairs. As have him being a pretty poor father. In fact, Jordan is a completely crappy human being outside of the court. If social media existed, I could only imagine the things we would have heard about Jordan.
LeBron though, married his high school sweetheart, attends a ton of his kids AAU games, and generally has his head on straight despite being video taped everywhere he goes. THE MAN CAN'T EVEN RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY WITHOUT BEING CRITICIZED. ↗ He has the weight of so much more on his shoulders than Jordan could even imagine. And in the face of it all, he acts like a standup human being.
I just can't stand when people say they don't like LeBron because he's selfish or an asshole when he is 10X the person any of the other great stars were. He's unselfish on and off the court. More than you could say for Jordan or Kobe or Wilt or any other great.
@JayHawkFanToo Recruited B-Rush while we were still Nike. Collison never played a game in an Adidas uniform and neither did Paul Pierce.
One of those "benefits" couldn't be a potential (guaranteed) Shoe deal? It is also illegal to say you went to a school for a sponsorship deal... Is it not ironic that Wiggins had a well reported potential Adidas deal in line before he even stepped foot on KU's campus? I wonder how he ended up here...
You also are missing the fact that Nike sells more gear at a higher price point, creating more profit for the school from selling licensed gear so they CAN offer less money. You don't just sell the same regardless of who your brand is. Nike gear sells better. So just because KU has a better licensing deal, doesn't mean we make as much profit. In fact, we made less of a profit than UK last year. So to say that our endorsement deal is SOOOOO much better than Duke or UK is 100% misleading.
@kjayhawks complete coincidence that Wigs and Jojo signed Adidas? Same with Tyshawn and Oubre? Just coincidence? Only guy under Self to sign Nike is TRob if I'm not mistaken.
But obviously that's just pure coincidence.
@justanotherfan Stevens is such an analytics guy I'm sure his head is about to explode.. Bron in the playoffs is a different animal. He goes 75% all regular season. You can't stop 100% Bron. No matter what stats or game plan you have. Just have to hope that Kyrie and Love BOTH get hurt and it becomes a 1 on 5 game.
I actually think this Clevland team might have a chance to beat anyone without Kyrie or Love. Their bench is stacked. Korver, Deron Williams, Derick Williams, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, and Iman Shumpert. They have a solid backup PG, SG and PF. Derick Williams, Channing and Jefferson could hold down the fort for a series if Thompson and Love were both hurt somehow. This is the best roster in the league.
@approxinfinity Are you a Jordan fan?
LeBron thinks TOO highly of himself? In what way?
@BShark I would have taken Jeter if we didn't land the Lawson's. Worse-case scenario he is Landen Lucas 2.0. But we get to avoid watching the first 3 and 1/2 years where Landen sucked.
Honestly, I thought we would see a Duke or UK superteam overpower their way to another championship season. But not the case... At least it appears that way. Duke without a solid post depth or a starting 5, really puts them in a bind. Still a top 5 team in my mind though.
UK missing perimeter depth will hurt. Also a lack of shooting ability. I think they are going to have some post controversy and have to play a guy like Gabriel out of position some. Bamba wouldn't have changed my opinion of them. They WILL have to play a slow paced game, much like they did with the 36-1 team, but with less talent. They don't have the same kind of depth. And certainly not a shooter like Booker.
@BShark Well I thought he would pick Duke personally.
But UK was crowded and Duke at least has minor competition for PT. Texas he will get to play as many minutes as possible and grow. Shaka has also gotten 2 guys drafted the past two years. One of them being a complete surprise in Ibeh after Ridley went down.
UT now at least a dark horse in the B12 depending on how good the freshies can all be.
@BeddieKU23 WKU would be a great place for a guy like him. They have some young talent coming in that needs some vet leadership.
@BeddieKU23 Fiddled around with it too long. The day the season was over for GTown, they should have fired JT and hired Ewing.
Their last game was 3/8. Didn't hire Ewing until 4/3.
A month missed of valuable recruiting time and a confident endorsement of Ewing that speaks volumes to recruits... I don't think Waters decommitts if they hire Ewing with the confidence they should have.
They made the Thompson family seem bigger than the program. The hesitation to move on could cost them. #1 rule, the program is bigger than just one person. And, if it isn't, it isn't a great program it is just a great coach... This is a defining moment in Georgetown's program. And they stumbled out of the gates.
- KU
- UK
- Duke
- UNC
- UCLA
Those are the only Blue Bloods. And to me, even Duke could become a question after K leaves. Although I find that hard to believe with 20+ years of really strong history now. It will take more than 1 bad hire for them to fade into the background like Indiana has.
Close behind:
- Florida
- Indiana
- UConn
- Arizona
-
@mayjay UK was dirty in the 40s and 50's. I hate so much that Rupp is apart of KU's history. Rasict old prick.
IT has nothing to do with Frank.
Frank is not IT. IT was Senior Frank as a Junior. IT has fluidity to his game Frank could only dream about.
With that being said, Frank is better than a Matthew Dellavedova or many of the other 3rd Tier PG's sitting on benches getting paid $8-$10M a year.
But comparing Frank to IT just blows my mind. He isn't IT.
Keep an eye on Valpo replacing WSU in the MVC. I have a feeling you might be watching the beginnings of our next Head Coach.
@jaybate-1.0 I think in one of the links it mentions Larry Brown getting the SMU job because of WWW.
This one is the best read:
http://www.gq.com/story/william-wesley-worldwide-wes-nba-basketball ↗
This has another mention of how Wes was the mediator in Philly between Larry and A.I.
Probably the best quote:
"Which sneaker companies are courting you? "
"Reebok, Adidas, And-1.“
"And-1 is no good, and stay away from that three-stripe shit. Nike and Reebok are the best."
@jaybate-1-0 I'm assuming you've also heard about World Wide Wes too? Really, Nike has won the game at this point. They can openly cheat better than anyone else. They have the resources and connections.
This link isn't the greatest, but it does have a few sourced instances of World Wide Wes and Nike being very involved with the UK program.
@jaybate-1.0 UCLA is Under Armour starting July 1.
@approxinfinity Watching LeBron keep making history doesn't do it for you?
This is the Jordan of our time. A generational player. A top 5 of all time. Your kids, or grandkids will ask about him... I think that alone is something to watch.
I also think the "Splash Bros" are fun to watch because they literally changed the league. The way the game is played. Completely....
But that is just my take.
@BeddieKU23 I would say that more than likely the staff has a list of players who could reclass and play next year if need be.
If only you could convince Bagley to reclass... This team would be unstoppable. But he's in that same Diallo/Maker scenario where I bet he doesn't play a game of college basketball.
@mayjay Loans or parents or academic scholarships.
The typical scholarship for baseball players looks like this:
- 1st year 25%
- 2nd year 50%
- 3rd year 50%
- 4th year 75%
Studs will be able to bargain a little bit more than that. But, thats typically the coverage. Many many programs rely on academic scholarships to get players covered their first year at least. So one of the first things they will ask a recruit is their ACT/SAT score.
@BeddieKU23 maybe I should take Matt's job over at the Shiver 😂
@JayHawkFanToo Cuonzo had that same thing at Cal and BARELY squeezed into the tourney...
Glad to see them hitting the ball now. They were pushing that 10 games out number I put on them as a trigger to start the fire sale. Now sitting at only 4.5
@BeddieKU23 I think Coleby is waiting on Svi's decision. Can't have less than 10 guys on the roster and he will play quite a bit next year if Svi doesn't come back.
At least it appears that way.
@jayballer54 I think that Tilmon would have been 100% Mizzou if they landed Knox. It's fun to go be part of a winner.
But now Mizzou isn't a winner yet. And Jontay will probably reclass. I would bet he starts. And Puryear will start. Really doesn't leave a spot for Tilmon to start their either...
So, you can either not start at Mizzou, who will be without the Porters in year 2 and struggle, or you can not start at Kansas and play and practice against NBA talent every day.
Can't blame him. Pieces falling that we expected. I think Svi will be back. Tilmon should still be a priority now. Especially with Billy Preston's uncertainty.
@justanotherfan I've said since the beginning of the year, NBA teams could do a lot worse at the backup PG spot than Frank.
Cavs had to go get Deron Williams this year. But he won't play for $400k next year. Frank would be the "F-ing playmaker" LeBron could be looking for in the 2nd unit.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yes.
Would you rather one or more persons sneak in a gun with a dozen clips and mow defenseless people down? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_2015_Paris_attacks ↗
First of all, I'd much rather no guns other than bolt action hunting rifles and single-barrel shotguns be allowed in the U.S. I'd even allow handguns, provided they are 100% metal and have to be loaded the old school revolver style.
I get people want them to protect their own house and be able to hunt. And I think we could accomplish that, providing we don't allow any weapons that could mow down a crowd.
Europe and Asia have much stricter gun laws and their murder rates reflect that.
But as long as semi-automatic weapons are legal, I'd rather everyone be carrying than one evil person be carrying.
