All Politicked Out? Election 2020 β€’ Nov 06, 2020 03:49 AM

More important maybe than Biden potentially taking Georgia is Perdue dropping below 50% to force a runoff. January 5th for the senate. I'm not too optimistic about getting both seats but at least there's a chance.

What a sad speech from POTUS. He's going to incite violence.

I live in Colorado and we have mail-in voting. I received my ballot about 3 weeks before the election, filled it out, and took it to a nearby drop-box. It was very simple and easy. You can also mail your ballot in.

I used ballottrax to track the status of my ballot. It told me when my ballot had been sent to me through mail (Oct 9th), when it had been received after I turned it into the drop-box (Oct 14th), and when it had been accepted (Oct 14th).

@approxinfinity In Pennsylvania too. Which probably bodes well for Biden's chances of taking PA.

He's been hovering around a margin of +32k in Michigan for a while. Hopefully that widens today.

Biden can get to 270 with Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada (and Maine). They are all way too close for comfort. He might have a chance at Pennsylvania. Longshot at Georgia.

Legal battles to follow all of this. I will be aging many years in the next few months.

Self talking about the team β€’ Nov 02, 2020 10:43 PM

He seemed to understand and play within the system as a freshman last season, so I'm not surprised. But it's great to hear, still. It seems like Garrett, Braun, Agbaji, and McCormack are likely starters. I thought Thompson was going to start, but that seems a little more shaky now. I wonder who the fifth starter will be.

@KirkIsMyHinrich YOU don't think it is a good reason. But you are the one who wants to change the rules when the rules are that ballots are due by 8PM on Nov 3. Anyone doing an absentee ballot knows that is the rule. Not getting it in on time is their own fault and they disenfranchised themselves.

Here is my question to you, how do you know when votes are done showing up? When do you call the election? If there are another 100k absentee ballots that were requested but never returned, how do you know when no more of them are coming? How long do you wait? Because no matter what you want to do, there is going to be a drop dead date at some point of when you stop counting votes. Even if they were post-dated correctly.

Again, you're not answering the question. It's due Nov. 3rd because it's due Nov. 3rd is not a reason. Cuz it's the rules is not a reason.

Count the votes that are postmarked before or by election day. If 100k absentee ballots were requested, but not filled-out and postmarked by election day, then don't count them. We're talking about ballots in Wisconsin that have been turned into the mail/submitted to the postal service prior to or by November 3rd. Those ballots should count. You wait the days it takes for those ballots to arrive and you count them. If it takes an excessively long time for those ballots to arrive, then that's a different problem entirely. It shouldn't take a long time for those ballots to arrive by mail.

Not counting ballots that are postmarked by election day when we are having postal service delays is stupid. Forcing people to vote in-person because their votes won't be counted by mail because they won't arrive in time during a pandemic is stupid.

Election β€’ Oct 27, 2020 10:55 PM

I can understand the argument for reducing the early voting window, except for people who need it for some reason, because it makes sense to wait until you have the most information about the candidates to cast your vote. I have yet to hear a decent argument as to why ballots postmarked prior to the election day should not be counted when we are in a pandemic and are having postal service delays.

And if we're going to narrow the window for voting, we should probably also try to:
1) Not have places where in-person voting takes all day
2) Not limit ballot boxes to one per country
3) Not destroy thousands of mail-sorting machines for no reason
4) Not intentionally cause mail to be slowed down
5) Stop rejecting ballots with mismatched signatures
6) Allow curb-side voting for disabled persons

Among other things.

@Kcmatt7 said in Election:

Every day matters when transitioning power from a Lame Duck to the new President. At least traditionally. Changing the entire federal government isn't exactly flipping a switch.

Knowing Nov 3 vs knowing Nov 17th is two weeks of transitioning lost. If it was over by Nov 17th. We are talking 11 weeks to get everything in order and we want to dick around counting late votes for weeks. Its stupid.

I can't believe how much common sense has gone out the window on this. Literally 130M people will vote on time and we are arguing over whether someone should be able to have their ballot in by Nov 3 or not. Whether or not that is a reasonable expectation. It is stupid. Say 20,000 votes don't get counted because of this. That is going to be .001 percent of votes cast. That means that literally 999 out of 1000 people are able to vote on time. Or another way to put this - 129,980,000 people were able to vote correctly and timely but we are concerned with a crowd of people that wouldn't even fill a football stadium.

Somehow I doubt it's going to matter with this administration whether the time of transition of power is 2 months or 2 1/2 months. And that is not a good reason to disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters in a swing state that's important to deciding the outcome of the election.

But I'm curious as to what specifically you think those 2 extra weeks of transitioning (at most) would help with.

Election β€’ Oct 27, 2020 08:21 PM

In this case, that's easy. If ballots aren't post-marked by election day, then don't count them. There's no reason not to count ballots that are postmarked by election day and arrive late.

You still didn't answer the question. Your vote is due Nov. 3 because your vote is due Nov. 3 is not a reason.

Election β€’ Oct 27, 2020 08:00 PM

Here's what Kavanaugh said:

"[L]ate-arriving ballots open up one of the greatest risks of what might, in our era of hyperpolarized political parties and existential politics, destabilize the election result. If the apparent winner the morning after the election ends up losing due to late-arriving ballots, charges of a rigged election could explode,’” Kavanaugh wrote. β€œThe β€˜longer after Election Day any significant changes in vote totals take place, the greater the risk that the losing side will cry that the election has been stolen.’”

"Kavanaugh cites a portion of the review warning that sore losers will claim fraud if all the votes are counting. Last I checked, your side not being able to gracefully accept defeat is not a legal argument for not counting valid votes."

Election β€’ Oct 27, 2020 07:54 PM

That's not a reason. That's just your shitty opinion. You answered none of my questions.

Election β€’ Oct 27, 2020 07:29 PM

So your reasoning for not counting ballots that are postmarked by election day in the midst of a pandemic and amidst postal service delays is that "there needs to be a deadline." Why? If people mail their ballots before the election deadline why shouldn't those be counted? Why is it so vital to have the election results on November 3rd instead of a few weeks after?

Hopefully this bullshit backfires and causes more people to vote in-person.

β€œThe New York Times reported that Barrett and her husband, who are parents to seven children, are members of an obscure group called People of Praise.

"Members of the group swear a lifelong oath of loyalty, called a covenant, to one another, and are assigned and are accountable to a personal adviser, called a 'head' for men and a 'handmaid' for women," the report read. "The group teaches that husbands are the heads of their wives and should take authority over the family."

"Can job applicants sue employers whose policies have a disproportionately deleterious impact on older people? Barrett said no. Should courts halt the deportation of an immigrant who faced torture at home? Barrett said no. Should they protect refugees denied asylum on the basis of xenophobic prejudice? Barrett said no. Should they shield prisoners from unjustified violence by correctional officers? Barrett said no. Should minors be allowed to terminate a pregnancy without telling their parents if a judge has found that they’re mature enough to make the decision? Barrett said no. Should women be permitted to obtain an abortion upon discovering a severe fetal abnormality? Barrett said no."

Very excited for a return to the dark ages while we hear about how progressive conservatives are for putting a woman on the Supreme Court.

"It’s literally why Chase Young has to sit out games for OSU last year.

It’s common knowledge, it’s bylaw 13.2.1.1 for recruits and bylaw 16.11.2 for student athletes

Specifically prohibited financial aid, benefits, and arrangements include but are not limited to the following: ... (d) Providing loans to a prospective student athletes family members or friends

An institutional employee or representative of the institutions athletic interests may not provide a student athlete with extra benefits or services including but not limited to: ... (a) a loan of money

It’s page 118 and page 246 of the ncaa bylaw document if you want to read for yourself"

Good guy Nick. I am going to donate too.

A lot of Tech fans seem to think McClung will be eligible to play next season. I'm not sure how he would get a waiver.

But, regardless, it will be interesting to see what Beard can do with him at Tech. He needs to improve as a defender/passer and improve his shooting efficiency (only 39.4% from the floor last season).

NOA response from KU discussion β€’ May 20, 2020 07:46 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I haven't looked into infractions case for Memphis much but it is listed as one of the referred cases on the IARP website. https://iarpcc.org/referred-cases/ β†—

I don't know if the IARP path will be good for us, but it seems preferable to the NCAA COI if those are our only options. I'm not thrilled about there not being an appeals process, but I assume if KU perceives the outcome of the case as being particularly unfair they might sue... someone?

NOA response from KU discussion β€’ May 20, 2020 07:00 PM

So if I'm understanding this correctly, KU now has 20 days to submit a response to the NCAA's request that its case be referred to the IARP. If we consent, then our infractions case will be resolved by the IARP pending its acceptance of the request. And there is no appeals process. But if we don't consent, what then? Would our case then be resolved by the NCAA COI, or would it go some place else? There is an appeals process with the COI, but from what I've read about that process it seems mostly perfunctory.

If those are our only two choices, it seems much more likely that a favorable KU outcome in this case would come from the IARP based on the fact that their panel consists of 15 members with legal background who are more likely to rely on evidence to reach their conclusions. And because they are independent/impartial - at least more so than the COI.

The IARP has accepted infractions cases for Memphis and NC St, so at least we might get a glimpse of what it will look like before we have to go through it.

Mike Decourcy asks the most important question here: How do you claim that adidas is a representative of kansas' athletic interests but also claim that shoe/apparel companies like nike are not acting in the interest of other universities?

The ncaa's response to this - "there is no cause for concern among member institutions as most of their relationships with corporate entities comply with ncaa legislation" - is pretty vague and weak.

Other bball news β€’ Apr 16, 2020 02:21 AM

Amazing UK couldn't do better than a 3/4-seed in the NCAA tournament this season considering all the NBA players they apparently had on their roster.

Other bball news β€’ Apr 16, 2020 02:16 AM

Yep, they're losing Hagans, Maxey, Quickley, Richards, Montgomery, Whitney, and Juzang. They have Keion Brooks coming back - a 6'7 forward who played 15 minutes per game and averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Coming in they have two top-10 recruits who are both small forwards - BJ Boston and Terrence Clarke, a 5-star point guard Devin Askew, a 4-star power forward Isaiah Jackson, another 4-star power forward Lance Ware, and another 4-star small forward Cam'Ron Fletcher.

They pretty badly need a big man now that Montgomery declared for the draft. UK fans are praying they land Matt Haarms who is transferring from Purdue.

Game Changer at the center position β€’ Apr 07, 2020 07:10 PM

Matt Haarms is soft and kind of sucks. He's a bad 3-point shooter and doesn't rebound well at all for his size. The fit offensively would be a nightmare if you started him with Dave. We're much better off going small and playing Braun or TGF. Maybe Haarms could come off the bench and be okay for us, but I'd rather just play Mitch or De Sousa at this point. Hard pass for me on Haarms.

Also, Dave averaged 7 and 4 on good efficiency in 14.7 minutes last season. Extrapolating to 30 minutes that would be about 14 and 8 as a sophomore. That's pretty good. I know Dave isn't Doke (nobody is), but he's a pretty good player who works really hard and I'm eager to see what he does with starters minutes next season.

My guess right now for starters next season (assuming Dotson leaves) is Thompson, Garrett, Agbaji, Braun, Dave. TGF is obviously going to play next season based on that statement from Townsend. Does anyone think he'll start ahead of Braun or any of the other projected starters?

2nd round of the GOAT tournament Part 2 β€’ Apr 01, 2020 12:16 AM

First-team all-conference (96,97,98)

B12 POY (97,98)

Consensus 1st-Team All-American (97,98)

3 pick in the 1998 NBA draft.

Averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds in 28.9 minutes as a junior on one of the best KU teams ever (96-97, 34-2 team). Averaged 19.8 points and 11.4 rebounds in 30.2 minutes as a senior.

Kansas has had some disappointing early exits in the tournament, but the S16 loss to Arizona in 1997 is (by far) the most disappointing to me.

Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU β€’ Mar 31, 2020 04:46 PM

The Truth dishes β€’ Mar 26, 2020 08:43 PM

If we're talking about in terms of player career/peak and not just looking at what they did at Kansas, then I'd probably go:

Wilt, Embiid, Manning, Pierce, White

Other bball news β€’ Mar 25, 2020 06:24 PM

Brown would play over everyone not named Sims. He's a clear upgrade over every other big man on Texas, and Texas will have plenty of minutes to accommodate 2 bigs. Sims isn't going to take minutes away from Brown, they can both be on the floor at the same time. There's nothing to compete with. Brown will get all the minutes he wants at Texas or wherever he goes.
