2020 Transfer List β€’ May 02, 2020 07:12 AM

Whitney Young H.S. produces some topnotch talent, Chicago in general does. I'm of the opinion that given the right coach it would be possible to win a NC by just successfully recruiting Chicago players. Was Ray Meyer still the coach when DePaul had Dallas Comegys? They haven't been relevant for a very long while.

Yikes. Attrition at Wake Forest already commencing. A few weeks back they were over scholarships then Chaundee Brown left. Now with Manning gone they have 9 bodies right now after their best player Oliver Sarr- 7 footer who averaged 13 & 9 last season has decided to transfer. According to him Manning convinced him to come back for his Sr year without testing the NBA draft and now his coach is fired and he's missed the deadline for entering the Draft..

In Sarr's words

I wanted to test the [NBA draft] waters," Sarr told ESPN on Thursday night. "I requested the UAC [Undergraduate Advisory Committee]. I tried to test the waters, then I had a conversation with Coach and he convinced me to stay and get my degree. He had plans for me, I was going to do great things in the ACC, with the team and individually, of course. It was late April, Coach was going to stay. Then, 24-48 hours before the [draft] deadline, Coach got fired. I didn't get the chance to put my name in and change my mind."

"It's actually a tough decision," Sarr said. "I want to give Wake Forest a chance and listen to what he has to say. I'm entering the transfer portal because I want to listen to all the options. I want to be able to pick my own coach, not have one chosen for me."

Boy that's kind of messed up for the kid. - - just a typical case for the kid. Kind of falls in line with when a kid is being recruited to come to a school as a Freshman he commits cause he wants to play for that Coach and then - - he get's fired after the kid has committed or the Coach leaves and the kid is like - - -Wait ? - - -What?

I'm with you, which is why I like the new and softened transfer rules. Coaches can bolt without notice (though still on contract), and the players are like, "..what?" If a player is unhappy at a school, I say bon voyage.

Case in point, Grimes. I didn't like him at KU, and was glad that he left. For a multitude of reasons he did not fit in. It worked out well for everyone concerned that he chose to transfer.

As soon as I saw that story I thought, 'man, until this all came out, I had never really given much thought to the shoe co. connection.' But it is so obvious now, Nike undoubtedly being the biggest culprit.

Bruce Bowen was going to go to Louisville, but who also almost got him? KU - both KU and Louisville being Adidas schools. Who supplied Bowen's AAU team? Adidas. We got Muscadin, but again it came down to Louisville and KU. Who got De Sousa? KU. But who was in the running? Maryland, an Adidas school.

KU was smart to resign with Adidas. Had we signed with Nike or anyone else we would not have, in the future, even gotten so much as even a whiff of a bigtime recruit. What, With Dook, Kentucky and UNC having already established long-term relationships with Nike the top recruits would have gone to one of those three schools, and Adidas would have steered almost all of the other good or even great ones to schools that they supplied apparel to. Just a thought.

Several things here:

Maryland is not an Adidas school which is how Silvio got caught up in this mess in the first place. The payment between shoe co. reps is why Silvio was suspended a season. Maryland is Under Armour's flagship school since that's where their founder went to school the same way Oregon benefits from Nike because of Phil Knight being an alum.

KU was not a finalist for Bowen, the competition was between Louisville, Michigan St. and Texas. Also, Brian Bowen was a much more sought after recruit than Gethro Muscadin is. Bowen was a consensus 5 star recruit while Muscadin is a 3/4* recruit depending on the service. While Louisville offered Muscadin, they were never a serious player for him.

Also, KU would probably be better off in recruiting with Nike because there is a much bigger pool of AAU talent to spread around than there is at Adidas. KU would be a big fish in a big pond at Nike. KU could get just about any top Midwest and west coast recruit they wanted with Nike, while Kentucky, Duke, and UNC split the eastern half of the country. With Adidas, they are a big fish in a little pond that has to share a sometimes too small pond with other top Addias programs.

I stand corrected by saying Maryland is an Adidas scool. I respect your opinion, but disagree that KU should have signed with someone else. Think that we were wise to stay with Adidas.

@FarmerJayhawk said in Adidas suing TJ Gassnola:

KU never really pursued Bowen. That was a recruitment that we were never going to win. But at different points Michigan State, Arizona, Creighton, DePaul, and Louisville led for him. Connect the dots there.

Maryland is UA, which kind of got the whole Silvio situation as crappy as it was. His guardian had to pay back UA so Adidas came in and fixed the situation so Silvio could go where he wanted (Kansas). Silvio was never involved.

I stand corrected, thanks. Thought Maryland was Adidas. But, yeah, the dots are obvious everywhere - Nike, Adidas, all of them. I have a question, @FarmerJayhawk. What do you, in your esteemed opinion, think that when all is said and done we're going to get out of this? I think censured and a reduction in scholarships, and Townsend gone. But I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first.

@BeddieKU23 I saw that. Beard is smart, knows that he can coach, going the transfer route until - and it is only a matter of time - he can consistently recruit with the big boys. As long as Beard is around Tech is going to be our most heated Big12 rival.

It looks like, as @jayballer73 astutely pointed out in the 22 thread, we’re going after a different type of guy these days. I think Bill saw what he had last year and was like OH. This could be fun.

And with OAD all but officially over with the new G League contracts it makes sense. We'll still get our Bryce Thompson's and others, but as far as top 10 recruits go I say steer clear. Build the bench and solidify the starting 5 with KC players and the occasional Wichita recruit, as well as adding nationwide ones such as Frank and Devonte (Gethro fitting that mold for next season).

Last Dance β€’ Apr 29, 2020 06:58 PM

@kjayhawks I am with you there. Teams battled in the 80s and 90s. An argument could be made that LeBron actually helped to bring about the demise - and while that fact may not be well-known or even yet showing financially that is what it is, a demise - of the NBA with his well-known me-me attitude which was apparently highly contagious, creating the touchy-feely and bigtime out of balance league of today. Not any NBA Champion in recent memory would stand a chance against The Jordon, Pippen, Rodman Bulls or The Bad Boys or the Bird in his prime led Celtics teams - not a one.

@Crimsonorblue22 I wasn't talking about better athlete. Was talking about who would you rather have? Stanley who has turned pro, or Braun who made us a whole lot better and will be here for 4 years?

2020 Recruiting β€’ Apr 21, 2020 04:50 PM

@justanotherfan the NBA is a bad product. What is killing it? The draft picks are no longer going to play college ball. They were once coached before they went to the NBA (hell, Jordan went 3 years! What about Magic and Bird?). Now, not so much... They have to be taught when they get there - bigtime hurting the product.

Preach. If you removed the ranking from their names and just showed unbiased people game film from last year I’d bet 90% would pick Braun over Hurt.

here is a question though would you trade Braun for Stanley ? lol

No, I'll take the four year Braun over Stanley - who is going pro - any day. Question. Did Braun make us a better team this year? Could Stanley have done for us what Braun did?

2020 Recruiting β€’ Apr 17, 2020 03:13 PM

@BShark they take an inordinate amount of plays off. If the season is so long - which it is - as to force you to put out a bad product then it is time for it to be shortened (which we know won't happen, cha-ching$). Anyway, agree to disagree, I think it's a bad product. It has been creeping in for about 10 years now, maybe longer. I think that it will eventually cost the NBA in terms of popularity.

Other bball news β€’ Apr 17, 2020 03:00 PM

@BigBad I don't think he would've responded well to Coach Self, and apparently he didn't respond to Coach K either - thus the transfer rumors.

@BShark He is Charmin soft. I remember someone when it looked like he might sign with us - a professional opinion guy, no one on here - comparing him to Kevin McHale which, in retrospect, was an obvious blasphemy. Maybe (wish I could remember where I read or heard it) he just said it due to Hurt being white and from Minnesota. One would hope anyway.

Hurt is going to be an NBA bust, another diva who wasn't quite - not by a long shot - as good as he thought that he was. Serious though, after this past season - comparing the two, and knowing that we'll have Braun for 4 years - I'll take Braun over Hurt.

Other bball news β€’ Apr 17, 2020 04:43 AM

@jayballer73 I'm pretty comfortable with our having signed Braun and Enaruna over Hurt, ditto Stanley. Bad luck for Wilson, but he'll contribute.

Unfinished Business β€’ Apr 17, 2020 04:23 AM

@BShark His announcement kind of tells me that he might be thinking of leaving after his junior year. I, personally, think that he is going to kick ass down low and even step out to nail a few buckets, which he did some this year. The guy has played alot these past 2 seasons, he's ready.

I get changing rules if your trying to keep top talent I guess, but the nba is watered down basketball. They have limited time to get a shot off. It’s really one pick and roll with maybe 2 passes, at most, with a quick shot. Quality of basketball is better in college. There are more play designs, more teamwork, and pace is much better.

I'm with you on all counts. The NBA doesn't even try to act like it wants to play D anymore. No D, all iso and three - bad basketball. That's why so many Europeans are being drafted, they have been coached and know how to play.

Just a quick observation: KU depending on the appeal of the federal case not being final sort of depends on that case not becoming final while ours is still pending. What happens if it does?

I am also wondering something about my fellow readers: how many of you supporting KU's objection to the NCAA's use of the not-technically-admissible evidence have ever expressed anger about a criminal defendant getting off on a technicality if a judge threw out a technically illegal search?

I am a full defender of the exclusionary rule, but I seem to vaguely recall that not everyone is....

The NCAA is not the US legal system though and don't abide by the same rules when it comes to making decisions and handing out punishments.

I do support the exclusionary rule because it does protect people from having their 4th amendment rights violated, but since the NCAA doesn't operate by the same rules, neither should KU in this case.

And that is the problem with the NCAA, it does not operate by or follow the same rules - tyrannical, and - an arguement could be made - even anti-American.

It is going to take a long time to go away if we don't find a vaccine. If it reduces here due to warm weather, it will increase in the Southern hemisphere, and return in the fall.

On March 19 (16 days ago) there were 244,000 world-wide cases. Now there are more than 4 times as many. There were 10,000 deaths. Now, 6 times that many. Of known cases with an outcome, the rate is 21%. If there are 10 times as many infections as officially counted (as many suspect), this thing is insanely burning a wide swath with no end in sight.

How can that all magically go away when we still have officials thinking they do not need to do everything in their power to fight it?

And that is not even taking into account the 2nd and 3rd waves that will need no help from the rest of the world to begin, having been born from the 1st that is now here.
