This year is really going to be special! If he matches Wooden's record it will be as good as it gets! I mean Wooden won like 7 NC in a row and 10 total I think? BUT the field of teams in the tournament back then was 8. I think KU could have been in that field many more times since Coach Self took over and KU would have a few more NCAA championships if that were the case today.

@HighEliteMajor I realize its common sense. Its also common sense that Coach Self has a Large amount of negative publicity when it comes to PT for OAD's. I can not wrap my head around Coach Self's recruiting tactics and PT for OAD's. Why would one heavily recruit OAD's and not give them the same advantage of PT that their counter parts in next years Draft have? Common sense would tell me that if you want to continue to recruit OAD talent you would have to give the ones you land every opportunity to prove that they are still OAD talent come the NBA draft. If you are not going to do so they are not going to get in line to play for you! If you are not going to play them and they are not lining up at the door then WHY recruit them so heavily. He pretty much snuffed the 4 star talent on this years ESPN top 100 and we are sitting on a goose egg in the 5 star department and KU spends like 400,000 recruiting (the most in college basketball). We spent 400,000 on Lightfoot! What a bargain! HCBS's counter parts have pretty much cleaned up all of the 5 star recruits and spent less money doing so. WHY?

@jaybate-1.0 IF Coach Self adopted UK's playing/recruiting OAD strategy I think KU could have its own personal stack of OAD's. If Coach Self continues to play seniors over OAD's then he will continue to have the same success rate recruiting OAD's. This year Coach Self pretty much exclusively recruited 5 star talent but his 5 stars have had the least amount of PT among the rest of the field. I have stated this before about either adopt the UK handbook or get out of the OAD recruiting game. Go and develop 4 stars and exclusively recruit 4 star talent (or at least recruit 4 star talent). If coach Self thinks he is too good for the 4 star talent and doesn't even bother to recruit them he is in for a rude awakening. Especially if he isn't going to play the 5 star talent on his roster until the light comes on. I believe Cheicks Draft stock is going to go down the toilette just like Alexander's if Coach Self doesn't play him and develop Cheick while he has him. This years recruiting is a perfect example of why it cant and wont last.
I am not sure how many people on this site have changed jobs/professions but for me its been a carousel my whole life. It always seems like total hell when you get out of your comport zone and take on a new profession. There is always an adjustment period and the jobs usually suck until you get used to them OR have done them for enough time to get good at it. There is always training videos involved or classes to take but nothing prepares you for the real deal until you are doing it. The best training you can get is hands on and on the job training to best prepare you for the road ahead. The light will come on ALOT faster if they are getting real experience. If my job only let me work with real customers for 10 minutes a day and watch training videos for the other 7hrs and 50 minutes it would take an eternity to get proficient at my job verses 7hrs and 50 minutes of working and 10 minutes training. That is why CAL and UK is so good with the 3rd season and why HCBS has not been to 4 final fours in the last 5 seasons. If he truly wanted to play better in the 3rd season he should take notes from the guy that has his team firing on all 8 cylinders every March. Just my openion.

Is it just me or do you all get the feeling HCBS is bringing Cheick along slowly so that he stays 2 years? He brought Embiid along quickly and lost him after 1 year. Imagine if we had Embiid instead of Cliff last year (a healthy Embiid) how far would KU have gone last season? Cheick says he might stay 2 so HCBS is pulling back the reigns so keep him and Bragg for a 2 year stint. Makes sense to me. Who benefits more for starting seniors instead of Cheick/Bragg? Will we take a hit on recruiting? Only time will tell?
Wayne has actually kept us hanging around for more than one game when the team has been in a slump. He has really turned a corner and its just in time. A couple of games could have really gotten out of hand had he not played well?
HCBS doesn't even need to recruit Josh because he wont play him any ways. Might as well find another under recruited guy that is willing to develop like Vick. Vick, Green, Svi, Graham, and possibly Mason will all play big minutes and Mr. Josh will just f up the team chemistry.
BG averages .95 PPM, Cheick averages .70 PPM. I am pretty sure BG gets our opponents BEST defender the second he checks in to the game. Cheick also demands plenty of attention from opposing coaches and players. Lets assume these 2 guys received starting minutes and lets also assume they could sustain their averages with the increased minutes? BG would be averaging 28.5 PPG on like 10 shots lol, and Cheick would be sitting on 21 ppg in tip in's and transition dunks! It could happen LOL

I don't know if you all keep up with these sorts of things but Conner Frankamp crashed and burned in his first game with the Shockers. Milton Doyle is having a solid season along with Andrew White. Both white and Doyle are averaging double digits in scoring BUT Frankamp was horrid last night!
All I can say is THANK GOD FOR NO MORE ESPN3! I will be able to watch the rest of the season now!
@JRyman I know you didn't bring up walk on's. HCBS used hard work to justify PT for his upperclassmen he is distributing minutes to instead of Cheick. The walk on's have put in hard work too.
@JRyman Yes just think HCBS needs to cast a wider net and take what he can get. Image and perception of HCBS and how he manages minutes were a speculation last year with Cliff and has already started with Cheick. At some point these kids are just going to pass all together on KU due to HCBS's inability to sever the umbilical chord with his seniors. These guys have sat on the bench for 3 years what is one more going to hurt? You don't see him playing Evan Manning even though he is a senior? How many starts will Tyler Self get this year? Have they not worked their butts off? These guys are not even in the discussion on next years NBA draft BUT Cheick is and the more HCBS limits Cheick the more it effects his pay check next year. People around the recruiting scene are telling these kids this and they listen. It wont be much longer and HCBS will not be able to land 5 star talent. Just sayn
Whats funny to me is that HCBS put it out there that some of his Bigs had worked their tails off to play. If that's what you want then WHY do you go after ONLY 5 star talent? IF you are going to recruit against guys that actually start their freshmen then you have to start them too OR forget even attempting to recruit them? Go after the 4 star guys that are no where near OAD talent and develop them. He is only hurting the program if he is ONLY going after 5 star guys and then scrambling to put a recruiting class together after he misses on the majority of them. Its got to be one way or the other! Look at the guys he is recruiting there mostly 5 stars and the 5 star guys are not going to come to KU if he continues to give minutes to less talented guys that have put in the work. I completely understand where he is coming from BUT QUIT recruiting guys that want to play immediately if you are not going to play them. FOCUS on guys that are willing to put in time that you can develop that have a high ceiling and are ranked close to the top 50. Its not rocket science!

Now that UCLA defeated UK and UNLV defeated Oregon its becoming clear to me that this was a stronger field than I thought when the field of teams was released. Now that KU came away with the win over Vanderbilt and the other teams in the field without BG and Cheick what does that say about the win? Next Saturday KU will be at full strength for the first time since the start of the season and I completely and whole heartedly believe KU is the team to beat starting next Saturday!
This teams chemistry moving forward will determine how things play out come end of March. If everyone buys in to playing limited minutes and HCBS uses ALL of his depth to run teams out of the gym KU will have everyone on its heals and WILL win it all this year! If BG and company fail to buy in to limited minutes and everyone getting their fair share of minutes this could be another early exit and a complete failure! I sure hope HCBS gets everyone on the same page and I hope BG suspension has gotten everyone's attention? Its just too bad that BG had to be the example and hopefully he comes back and focuses on the team? Any how this team has me excited this year!

We also have 11 guys averaging 10 minutes or more! Then out of the guys that are averaging at least 10 minutes or more MOST OF THEM would average 10 pts or more given an increased role! Hopefully everyone stays healthy so we can ride this wave until April!
You try and isolate one or 2 guys and KU will switch gears and go with a different rotation. Its probably not any fun to play against KU this year now that we added another element to clean up our mistakes! Cheick was exactly what we needed so badly the last 2 years!
If you are an opposing coach how to prepare for a team that has almost 7 guys averaging double figures? I know BG is out BUT HOT DAMN 7 guys averaging double figures? UK didn't have no where NEAR that last season with their platoon system they rolled out. This team is a coaching nightmare for opposing coaches because there is not a focal point!
Ellis waited to sign with KU until after he got accepted to Harvard. I am guessing he will be happy he is on our team this weekend.
I think Harvard is getting shafted when we play. They have an away game tonight (travel), then they have to travel to KU for Saturdays game. 2 days to prep and do studies all while KU has been home relaxing lol. Its a tough schedule for them compared to KU.
BG transferring could happen BUT no one is getting a bunch of minutes right now. I think his parents have probably talked about it but I wouldn't jump ship mid season over pt. Wayne is a better option over Svi and BG atm so complain all you want but it is what it is. Wayne could be gone after this season if his NBA stock is high enough and the team wins it all there COULD be a big turn over come seasons end? We would need him bad next season if every thing goes right this season?
My problem with letting Traylor play and taking minutes from Cheick is that its quite possible Cheick falls out of the NBA lotto and makes it nearly impossible to recruit FUTURE talented BIGS.
HCBS said something like he didn't want Embiid to have 2 fouls in the first 2 minutes of the game. That's exactly what happened to Cheick in the short period of time he played in the first half.
Until Diallo gets his foul woes in Cheick he will come off of the bench. HCBS did the same with Embiid for the first several games.

IF Diallo had all of Traylors minutes he would have been close to a triple double. HCBS is doing everything he can to keep Traylor on the court because he is a senior. We need more DIALLO! With the addition of Diallo on this team we have BALANCE! Its totally awesome!
