@Crimsonorblue22 Weather is great right now. Rained on me most of the way from San Antonio this morning.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 11:47 PM

How did this OLine block well enough for Herbert to get almost 300 yards against a Big 12 defense?

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 11:44 PM

Stanley has already thrown two of the ugliest picks I've ever seen and it's still the 1st quarter.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 11:12 PM

And he's down after taking back to back huge blindside hits.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 11:09 PM

Stanley with the start tonight.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 11:07 PM

That didn't take long. Onside kick attempt to start, UT recovers and scores a 49 yard TD on the first play from scrimmage.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 10:38 PM

Bender and Stanley both taking reps in warm ups. Looks like Bender is working with the 1st unit so I'm guessing he's starting tonight.

Texas Shorthorns • Nov 11, 2017 10:32 PM

I'm at the game today and I can count on one hand the number of other KU fans I've seen around the stadium today. Post game fun on 6th St. was definitely an influencing factor in getting a ticket to the game.

@RockChalkinTexas ISU was picked near the bottom of the league and Missouri is a good team this year so that wasn't a surprise to me. I'm also not surprised A&M beat WVU because they're both good teams, but the way A&M dominated that game was definitely a surprise.

Ok so what's your guess ? • Nov 10, 2017 05:13 PM

Any game the refs have a tight whistle is a potential loss because of the lack of depth.

Gameday is HERE!! • Nov 10, 2017 04:52 PM

@JayhawkerRedLegs Lucas isn't the reason why KU lost to Oregon.

Kansas to wear Civil War Uniforms Saturday • Nov 10, 2017 03:41 PM

I would've bought the Civil War logo shirt had they made a short sleeved version of it. All I saw online at multiple sites like Rally House, Lids, and Fanatics was a long sleeved version for $40 Or $50. There's not a lot of opportunities to wear long sleeved shirts in Houston and I can't justify that much for a shirt that I would have the opportunity to wear maybe once or twice a year. I'm also not spending $100 on the jersey, maybe next year when it's on clearance for half price if they still have my size.

Make a short sleeved version of the shirt for $30 and I would've already bought one.

PULL OUT THE CHECKBOOK • Nov 10, 2017 01:11 PM

How much money did Sexton receive out of this deal from Auburn coaches? This is basically the same situation KU dealt with when Selby committed here, except Selby was suspended 1st semester. Paid by a school, then committed elsewhere. Bruce Pearl really should stopp trying to pay players because thise top guys don't seem to stick with Pearl.

Post game thread • Nov 09, 2017 05:43 PM

We don't need Garrett to be a scorer often, we need him to be a utility guy that does everything else. We have scorers with Graham, Vick, Newman, and Azubuike in the paint. Garrett just needs to fill up the other categories and he'll be fine this year.

New Kansas Poll About Rivalries • Nov 09, 2017 04:39 PM

@mayjay The ASU series might be the replacement for the Cal series then because I know KU replaced Cal with another school out west.

New Kansas Poll About Rivalries • Nov 09, 2017 01:04 PM

@mayjay It prevents trips to those states and from public schools hosting schools in those states as well. The Stanford game was originally supposed to be against Cal in Berkeley, but the law forced the cancellation of that game and KU replaced them with Stanford.

KU vs UT = Ticket Alert for Texas Fans • Nov 09, 2017 03:18 AM

@RockChalkinTexas I've never had issues buying tickets directly from the UT Athletics site before. The one year Steve Pederson was AD was the one year KU wasn't available for single game purchases. That might have been one of highest attended KU games I've seen in Austin probably because of that.

Baylor is trying to pull that move of only putting the KU game in ticket packages for a few weeks before making single game tickets available in January about 2 months after every other game went on sale.

New Kansas Poll About Rivalries • Nov 09, 2017 03:12 AM

@justanotherfan KU does generally play out west at least once most years. In fairly recent history, we've played UNLV, San Diego St., Cal, and USC. This year we got road games at Stanford in Sacramento and Arizona St. Because of California law, KU can't play any public schools in California, but there's always Stanford and USC as options in PAC 12 to play at along with the Arizona, Washington, and Oregon schools out there. I'd like to us return the Washington game and play out in Seattle considering some of the recruiting successes KU has had in Seattle over the years.

@nuleafjhawk Look what's happening to UConn in basketball now that they are no longer in a power conference. They are quickly losing relevance in basketball.

Dropping football means no longer in a major conference. That means reduced TV exposure which will have a very negative impact on recruiting. Instead of landing 5 and 4 star players, KU would landing mostly 3 star players with occasional 4 star players.

I'd much rather be embarrassed about the football team sucking than being embarrassed that KU quit football completely.

@nuleafjhawk Basketball will no longer be a blue blood if football is dropped and it will have a much more negative impact on the university than the football team being crappy.

Is this current KU team special? • Nov 04, 2017 06:34 PM

KU has 10 eligible players right now and 11 when Cunliffe is eligible, there is no margin for error with the depth this year. I'm surprised Self didn't have tryouts to try and find a big. There's also a walk on 6-7, 260 lb. TE on the football team that had good numbers playing JuCo basketball last year that could be a good depth addition for the team this year.

Today is why Stanley isn't the answer at QB. His arm isn't strong enough for this offense and his accuracy is atrocious.

Stanley gets far too much credit for the UT upset last year. KU beat Texas last year solely because of the defense forcing 6 turnovers. KU won that game in spite of Stanley, not because of him.

@nuleafjhawk The TV deal for football is massive and dwarfs the basketball deal. Football still has more people in the stadium those than basketball so ticket revenue is comparable because of the lower prices tickets. It also doesn't matter if someone leaves after the 1st play or stays the whole game, they still had to pay the same amount to enter the stadium.

Mainly it's the TV deal that generates a massive amount of money for KU each year, $30+ million based on what the Big 12 said about revenues last year. Basketball doesn't come anywhere near that.

@nuleafjhawk Football still generates twice the money basketball does for the athletic department. KU football may suck, but it's still funding the rest of the athletic department's non revenue sports.

Marcus Garrett • Nov 02, 2017 03:44 PM

@justanotherfan Garrett looked pretty good against Missouri.

HawkChamp said:

Do we really gain recruits because we schedule a team in their area? I would like to hear stats and articles about this.

You may not directly land players, but it offers assistant coaches an easy trip to see some high profile players they are recruiting. Las Vegas has a bunch of high profile prep academies so playing a game at UNLV allows those coaches to visit a few players at their schools while on that trip.

Arizona St. and Stanford are each in close proximity to major recruiting areas. Josh Jackson played in both areas at Hillside in the Phoenix area and Prolific Prep in Napa north of the bay area. When KU plays at Temple or Villanova in Philly, there's a ridiculous amount of high school talent in that area of Philly and South New Jersey. Playing Syracuse down in Miami, guaranteed a coach will be making a recruiting visit to somebody on that trip.

When KU schedules a road game, it's almost always going to be in a area that's a recruiting hotbed.

Hmmmm wondering • Nov 01, 2017 01:05 AM

@wissox ND alternates between IU and Purdue in Indy at the Crossroads weekend where the 4 major Indiana programs play each other.

Non-Conference games for the Big-12 • Oct 31, 2017 04:36 PM

Basketball schedules usually aren't made too far in advance like football. Most high profile match ups are made a year or two out and the quality of schedule generally reflects the level of expectations of the team that season.

Hmmmm wondering • Oct 31, 2017 03:53 PM

KU plays places like Arizona St., Stanford, UNLV, Temple, and other places like that because of the proximity to major recruiting areas. KU has landed players from all of these areas in recent years.

KU lands players from Wichita without needing to travel there so that's why a WSU series doesn't make a ton of sense right now.

Meet Billy Preston: 6th man • Oct 25, 2017 03:41 PM

If Preston was a guy who was ready to play 35 mpg, I would say start him and rotate him between the 4 and 5 because he is capable of playing in the low post and on the perimeter. But Preston is not that guy, he'll probably be a 20-25 minute guy this year with most of those minutes subbing for Azubuike, so it does make more sense with the current personnel to have Preston off the bench to me.

GREAT ARTICLE ABOUT DEVONTE AND COACH SELF • Oct 24, 2017 09:54 PM

I would also put Landen Lucas as projects that turned out better than anyone expected. I'll never say he was a great player because he's not, but he went from an awkward big body to the most valuable player KU had the past 2 seasons.

In 2015-16, we had 4 good to great college players on the floor, but that team still struggled because they didn't have any kind of post presence. During that time when KU was rotating players, I kept saying Landen was the guy because KU had already had enough scoring. They were lacking rebounding and Landen did that better than anyone on the team.

Last year after Azubuike gets hurt, Landen is the only reliable post player KU had. So while Landen wasn't the best player for KU the past 2 years, he was by far the most valuable player because of what he brought to the table in terms of rebounding and also getting under opponents skin. He got a bunch of technicals called because of tge frustration he created in other players and disrupted their games on a regular basis.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 02:32 AM

@DanR They really hadn't forgotten about basketball. There was plenty of buzz among the Missouri fan base for this year a long time before this game was announced because of the class Martin assembled.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 02:30 AM

@DoubleDD Kansas has the higher ceiling this year. Both teams have a lot of young players who now have film of themselves against good competition that Self and Martin can use to build upon those weaknesses they showed today. I don't think either side gained more than the other today.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 02:24 AM

@DoubleDD Udoka's season ended in practice last year, not a game. Injuries are a part of the game. Using that as a reason to not play this game is a total cop out.

And how exactly did Missouri fans gain anything today other than knowing KU is still better than they are? There was already a buzz among their fanbase this year because of the class Cuonzo Martin brought in. They brought in a top 5 class with 3 top 50 recruits this year, that's a legitimate reason to get excited for a season for just about any team.

What did Missouri legitimately gain that Kansas didn't? Each team now has game film against a quality opponent without it impacting the standings. Neither teamed gained a recruiting edge with KC area players they didn't already have.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 02:15 AM

@Big-Clyde52 Udoka's season ending injury last year occurred in practice, should KU quit practicing so players don't get hurt?

Injuries are a part of the game and today's game didn't increase the injury risk for anyone that couldn't have happened in a practice. Seems like most of the injuries KU players have sustained in recent years have mostly happened in practice and not during games.

Thoughts on the victory vs Fizzou • Oct 23, 2017 02:09 AM

@DoubleDD If KU lost, it's an ego check which isn't always a bad thing, especially when it's not a season ending lost.

How is getting game film against a top 25 caliber team in a game with no bearing on the standings or rankings a bad thing for KU? It shows the new players where they need to keep working to get better which speeds up the growing pains process and could better prepare the team for March and April.

Checkmate - Border War Back On • Oct 23, 2017 12:54 AM

@DoubleDD KU has a pretty soft nonconference schedule this year. Missouri is going to be the 2nd or 3rd best team we play outside the B12 this year.

We don't necessarily need a top 25 game every exhibition season, but when we have a relatively weak nonconference schedule like this year, it's not a bad thing to play a top 25 team like Missouri every once in awhile.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 10:55 PM

@HawkChamp Missouri isn't good enough to challenge Kentucky or I think Florida is actually the best team in the SEC this year. Missouri will be in the 2nd tier with Alabama and others fighting for 3rd in the SEC this year.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 10:14 PM

I've missed beating Missouri in basketball, 2nd best feeling possible in basketball for Kansas.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 10:13 PM

@BShark I didn't necessarily have a specific opponent in mind with my comment, more like whenever the refs have a tight whistle and are calling a lot of ticky tack fouls would be games where KU could run into issues.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 09:50 PM

@BShark I doubt KU's defense is going to be great this year. As short as the rotation will be this year, I expect the defense will be lacking to try and keep out of foul issues since KU will only have 8 players the first month and 9 the last 3-4 months of the season. I think we'll lose some games when there's a tight whistle because of the lack of depth.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 08:52 PM

Garrett is going to be seen g quite a bit of time at the 4 this year. A 6-5 player at the 4 is not ideal for rebounding purposes.

Help viewing pay per view Border War • Oct 22, 2017 08:37 PM

Just said on the radio that there were about 16000 PPV buys. KU has also tripled the text donations of Missouri.

@kjayhawks QB Clayton Tune is one I thought KU would struggle to hang on to even when he committed.

I suffered through 3 of the worst seasons in baseball history with my Astros while they implemented their rebuilding plan.

This was never going to be a 3 year rebuild for Beaty. I've seen people ask why were programs like UCF which went 0-12 the same year KU did a couple of years ago and is currently 6-0 and why can't KU duplicate that.

There's several reasons for that. First would be that UCF won the Fiesta Bowl just 2 years prior to their 0-12 season so Scott Frost inherited a much better situation with very recent success and players that were apart of the Fiesta Bowl team.

Number two is the level of competition UCF plays. The AAC is not the Big 12. It's much easier to rebound from a down year in a league like the AAC than the Big 12.

Number three is UCF is in Orlando. Their recruiting base is much better than KU's. They are competing with USF for the second tier prospects in Florida that the Big 3 don't want.

KU has none of those advantages. Another comparison I've seen is David Cutcliffe at Duke. Duke was patient with Cutcliffe and actually let him build that program. It took Cutcliffe until year 5 to finally break through and reach a bowl game. He actually regressed in years 3 and 4 at Duke like Beaty is now and we see what the reaction has been to that regression. The difference is Duke allowed Cutcliffe to execute his plan and once all of the players in that program were Cutcliffe guys, Duke then made 4 straight bowl games before breaking that streak last season.

I don't know if Beaty will ever succeed at Kansas or not, but I know a 5 year turnaround plan is never going to be executed in 3 years. I also know that KU has traditionally cycled through coaches every 3-4 years for the better part of the past 70 years since WWII. I know that continuing that cycle of only giving a coach 3-4 years to finish a 5 year is never going to build anything sustainable at Kansas either. Every good coach that has come through Kansas post WWII has gone on to vetter programs except for Mangino was looking after the OB, but nobody wanted him at that time.

I would say that if we want any hope of success after a long period of futility like Duke, we need to allow Beaty his 5 years and realize there will be road bumps just like Cutcliffe had road bumps in years 3 and 4 that if those were duplicated at KU, wouldn't have gotten him a 5th year to see if the plan would payoff or not.

Yes, our OLine is garbage right now. It takes time build an OLine. 3 years is not enough time. It literally takes 4-5 year's because thise kids legitimately need 4-5 years in the weight room and there is no legal substitute for that time. The normal starting OLine are comprised primarily of 2nd and 3rd year players. They are not physically ready yet, but there are no other options out there for KU so we are seeing those growing pains right now. When injuries get tossed into the mix and players who are even less physically ready to play are forced to play, we see what we've seen offensively the past 2 weeks.

I don't know if Beaty will ever get KU turned around or not, but I know that continuing to do the same thing we've seen for the past 70 years will yield the same results we've seen for the past 70 years which is one of, if not the worst major conference football team in the country.

@mayjay Deep routes weren't going to happen. Defense live in KU's backfield all night. Even Usain Bolt wouldn't have had time to get open last night.
