(NOT) OK BOOMER GAME THREAD • Oct 16, 2022 01:54 AM

I've been saying all year that KU would have some games like this because the defense is still bad. We're in the stretch of the season where KU is playing the most high powered offenses in the conference and KU's margin for error just isn't there.

Does bean have a stronger arm than JD?

Yes, but Daniels has much more precision, accuracy, and touch on his passes. Also much better field vision. I'm not convinced KU wins with Daniels today because of the defense, but I do think KU wins last week and today is more competitive because the score today doesn't really reflect how today went.

OU has done a pretty good job of stopping the run so far is probably a big reason. They've also been stacking the box forcing Bean to beat them.

No they haven't come close to testing their run defense - 12 times in a half ain't squat especially when your playing against the worst run defense in the big 12 who is over 65 yards per game worse then any othr team in the league. - as a matter of fact they are like ranked 122nd out of 131- you have to legit test that kind of run defense more then that

OU game planned to stop the run by stacking the box and forcing Bean to beat them. Despite the records, OU does still have far superior talent to KU. And now with OU up multiple scores, KU isn't going to be able to run as much because they need to pass to try and catch back up since the defense isn't stopping them today.

(NOT) OK BOOMER GAME THREAD • Oct 15, 2022 04:33 PM

We're seeing the difference between Daniels and Bean today on full display and OU is forcing Bean to beat them and he doesn't have the accuracy or touch to consistently do that.

I assume they’ll go back to not playing every team in football too. That 2007 team was great but did dodge OU, Texas, and Texas tech (I think) when those teams were pretty solid.

KU likely would've beaten Texas who went 5-3 in league play and Texas Tech who went 4-4 in league play that year. OU was the only team in the south that would've likely beaten Kansas.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I like core rotational players! We just won a NC with them. I'm glad we'll have a chance to get to 'know' these three guys because they'll be around for a while. Thanks for your take on them.

There is a danger with these types of players though in that if they don't get the minutes they think they deserve early on, they may look elsewhere to get those minutes.

3 4 star signings • Oct 14, 2022 01:13 PM

@wissox 2023 is a very weak recruiting class overall. Zuby who is 46th in the 247 rankings would be a top 25, possibly top 20, recruit in the 2023 class. There's only 16 total 5 star players in the 2023 class which is a very small number since most classes have around 25 players that are considered 5 star players. Elmarko is a good player, but most years, he's much closer to 50th than top 25 in a recruiting class. The players in this class are core, rotational type players, not necessarily immediate impact players.

The death of conference home-and-home... killing revenge games. Reducing the source to build rivalries. It sucks.

We might as well have just one D1 conference in the entire country and have a schedule lottery every year to pick our games.

This is what happens when you turn D1 over to TV marketing wonks.

Teams and fans reduced to ZERO input. The almighty dollar rules all.

We didn't play home and home when the league had 12. We'd play 5 teams home and home and the other 6 were split 3 home and 3 away.

@justanotherfan said in KU veteran Jason Bean not the only Kansas quarterback prepping for a new role this week:

Ideally Vasko does not play at all this year. He is the guy that needs to be ready to take the reigns after Daniels leaves after next year. Him having three years to start after next season rather than two would be the best case scenario.

He can still play in 4 games this year and keep the redshirt. I don't think it'd be a bad idea in the right situation to get Vasko some game reps this season.

Jalon Daniels • Oct 11, 2022 10:52 PM

Jalon Daniels • Oct 10, 2022 12:26 AM

Sounds like Daniels hurt his AC joint in his shoulder which is the same injury Bryce Young is dealing with at Alabama. Looks like KU is going to have to go with Bean in Norman and possibly longer depending on the severity of the injury.

JUST BEAT THE TCU LIZARDS • Oct 09, 2022 07:26 PM

On another positive note, KU is still ranked in the top 20 in both polls which means a lot of people watched and saw KU go toe to toe with potentially the best team in the Big 12 with a back up QB. KU fell to 20th in the coaches poll and remained 19th in the AP poll.

JUST BEAT THE TCU LIZARDS • Oct 09, 2022 07:23 PM

@AsadZ said in JUST BEAT THE TCU LIZARDS:

Credit goes to Bean, he stepped up. One bad INT due to not enough reps with WRs. He made a few outstanding throws for TDs.

We also saw why Daniels beat out Bean for the QB. Bean doesn't have great touch his passes. As great as that Fairchild catch was, Bean put it in a bad spot. Also on that dump off to Neal where he was wide open on that last drive, Daniels likely makes that throw. Bean is a great option for a back up, but we also saw why he was the back up yesterday with his accuracy on his passes.

JUST BEAT THE TCU LIZARDS • Oct 08, 2022 07:24 PM

Self inflicted mistakes today cost KU more than the refs did. The goal line fumble ended up being a 14 point swing, the missed FG. Borcila is terrible from the right hash, seems like everything he kicks from there he hooks it left. Bean not having great touch on his passes with his interception and overthrowing Neal for what would have been a likely tying TD.

The ref absolutely should've called holding on that 4th down play as the DB had Arnold's jersey as Arnold broke in, but KU had too many self inflicted mistakes today to overcome missed calls by the refs.

@FarmerJayhawk said in JUST BEAT THE TCU LIZARDS:

I unfortunately like TCU to cover. Bad matchup for us given their strength is speed on the outside and that is not what we have on defense.

TCU's defense is also nowhere near as strong as ISU's so KU should be able to move and score the ball much easier this week. They don't force many turnovers (tied for 99th), middle of the road in sacks. This should be an entertaining, high scoring game.

The GameDay set will be on the hill between the stadium and the Campanile.

Did you feel they (unc) were a threat last season? I was elated to get them in the final. If that’s the best team this year, it’s wide open.

After Duke thumped them in Chapel Hill, UNC went 13-3 the rest of the way and looked like a top 10 team during most of that stretch. The big difference between UNC last year and UCLA the year before is UCLA wasn't breaking in a new coach. Cronin had his system in place and UCLA just caught fire during their run. Hubert Davis was still figuring out his roster and the light came on about halfway through the season. I'm fully expecting Davis to build on that success and have UNC in contention for a national title this upcoming season.

13-3 isn’t that great. If KU goes 13-3 down the stretch it’s expected - every year. UNC is a very good team, top 10 this year no doubt. Until I see someone else play I can’t tell you who is going to be better, but if that UNC team is deservingly ranked #1 the tournament is wide open. They have a low ceiling - KU was a deeply flawed team last season and they beat them. I don’t see this years UNC team winning 6 without a good draw and a bit of luck.

It took Hubert Davis about half a season to figure his team out. And when that 13-3 stretch started after the 20 point home loss to Duke, UNC was on the wrong side of the bubble in most bracket projections and played their way into the field in the last month of the season.

I do believe UNC is very deserving of a preseason #1 ranking based on who's back and how they were playing at the end of last season. That may change once the games start,
but I suspect UNC will be highly ranked all year and have a much better follow up than UCLA did last season.

Wisconsin might kick the tires on Leipold, but unless Leipold just absolutely wants that job, KU should be able to outpay Wisconsin. They've been known as one of the most frugal athletic departments in the P5 for a long time and why they've lost coaches in the past.

Victory! That was a comedy of odd things on the field today. Poor ISU kicker.

So was the opposing defense that good or did it seem like we didn’t really put Jalon to good use today?

Anybody know about Hinshaw? I honestly don’t know about his previous injuries, but from what I read it sure seemed related to a previous “rare” hip injury. Sucks.

And I’ll just say it (sorry)… Fans, please stop mobbing the field after wins. Just stop. Amateur hour. Injury waiting to happen. You’re better that that.

Iowa St. is probably the best defense in the Big 12 so they did a pretty good job of keying on amd containing Daniels. Daniels also didn't have a great day throwing as he missed a couple of big passes in the endzone. Leipold also said during the post-game conference that he was intentionally more conservative yesterday because of how good ISU's defense is.

Does KU crack the top 20 of the polls? 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, and 24 in the AP poll all lost this week.

We won a game. Not sure how Lance was outcoached. Our defense was coached marvelously.

I'm not going to say our defense coached marvelously today, especially in the second half when ISU was getting good yardage running that crossing route and converting a lot of 3rd and 4th downs with play. We also definitely got lucky their freshman kicker was awful today because we gave ISU several chances to win today. I would definitely consider this a game ISU lost more than KU won.

While I wouldn't necessarily say Leipold got outcoached today, I would say that ISU made the better adjustments in the 2nd half today and pretty much shut KU's offense down and moved the ball much better in the second half than the first half.

At the end of the day, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good and KU was pretty lucky today.

@stoptheflop KU's defense currently ranks 84th in total defense and 83rd in scoring defense and Houston did outgain KU on offense last week. They're improved from last year, but improved from the worst still only gets them to a bad defense. West Virginia is a good team with a good offense and they had no issues moving the ball and scoring on KU's defense.

Is Duke better than West Virginia? No, but they've looked better than Houston has so far on offense so they'll be able to score on KU's defense. Duke's defense has average against bad teams so I expect KU's offense to carve up Duke's defense and put up a lot of points today.

I look for KU to win today with a score of 49-35

@MoonwalkMafia said in Dare yourselves to be optimistic! KU Football:

@nuleafjhawk Ya, if I was betting on the OSU or Texas game, I wouldn't bet on KU to win. I'm just saying...hey, it could happen. Nobody expected us to beat TX on the road last year, and we played our best game of the season. Who knows...maybe?

@mayjay I understand where you're coming from. And if our RB room was as thin as it was last year, I'd share your concern. But Devin Neal is the real deal, as is Daniel Hishaw. JD is our leading rusher because he ran for 158 yards last week. Devin Neal could easily run for 200 yards against Duke. JD being able to run the ball is a nice element. But our offense isn't dependent on him rushing for 150 yards a game. And man, our offensive line is opening holes that you could drive a semi-truck through.

Some of the points I'm reading on this page are exactly what I'm talking about. Don't get greedy? We're not talking about betting our life savings on winning the conference. I'm just trying to get people to realize that KU is a good team and that there are probably more winnable games on the schedule than people realize. The Big 12 is not exactly lighting the world on fire, and I just don't see KU starting the season 4-0, then going 1-7 or 2-6 the rest of the way. Stop thinking the wheels will come off based on the past.

But that's why they play the games, right? We'll see what happens. This should be a fun season.

KU's offense is good enough to give them a chance basically every week. I could see a couple of blow outs happening within the OU, Baylor, and OSU trio of games because thise are the three best teams and KU isn't going to have their A game every week and our defense isn't that good yet and we've yet to see them play an elite offense. Teams can't circle KU as basically an extra bye week anymore and this team has a genuine chance to get to 6-0 before they play a really good team this season.

There's also likely going to be two other games between ranked teams with Kentucky at Ole Miss and Baylor and Okie St. also playing next weekend.
