Real possibility at this point

I want an undefeated Kansas vs an undefeated Duke next week for gameday. Let's get this one

Not gonna happen, GameDay will likely either be in Knoxville for Florida-Tennessee or Winston-Salem for Clemson-Wake Forest. Dallas would be longshot for A&M and Arkansas.

Today is the first KU game I've been able to attend since the 2018 game against Baylor in Waco and I'm looking forward to seeing what should be a pretty high scoring game. Both defenses are well below average and with KU having already played a road game, the environment won't intimidate them at all. With the way KU's offense has looked so far this year, they'll be in most games this year which is a very refreshing change from most of the last decade where it was a great day if KU scored 20+ points. It'd also be nice to see KU at 3-0 for the first time since my senior year at KU in 2009-10.

There's scattered storms forecasted in the area today so it could be which team can run better which based on the first two weeks is advantage Kansas. Plus it would be nice to beat former KU commit and current Cougar QB Clayton Tune.

All that said, Kansas 45-Houston 38

What makes Leipold a strong candidate for the Nebraska is his buyout here is only $5 million. Nebraska should be able to afford that on top of Frost's buyout and whatever salary they'd pay Leipold.

Personally, if I was Nebraska's AD, Leipold would be third on my list after Matt Campbell and Chris Klieman simply because they've established good programs in the P5 and Leipold isn't there yet with Kansas.

I thought oddly enough the run d was good enough yesterday to win some more games.

It is getting things sorted on the back-end. I’m not ready to say it is a talent issue. They’ve just got to get more on the same page and coach those guys up.

Bowl game is probably still a stretch, but damn does it feel like this team just got a huge monkey off their backs.

The back end of the defense is still relatively young and inexperienced which is a big part of their issues. They'll get better as the year goes, but this defense is still going to be relatively weak all year. Even being better than last year still means this defense is bad. Any games won will be won because of the offense.

This team isn't winning with defense unless it's a causing a lot of turnovers. The wins are going to come because of the improvements in the offense are going to give KU a chance against everyone in the middle and top of the Big 12.

KU is still a bad defense. They're better than last year, but KU will still likely be a sub 100 defense this year. I still fully expect KU to get blown out by 35+ a couple of times this year because of the defense. This isn't the year to see a significant increase in the win column, but we should still see KU be more competitive overall like towards the end of last year.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:31 PM

UNC recovers the onside kick and that will end it. UNC will survive 63-61 in amazing game that saw App St. score 6 TD's and 40 points in tge 4th quarter.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:29 PM

2 point try is no good, ran the same play as last 2 point try and QB kept it this time and stopped short and fumbled on the 1.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:26 PM

Touchdown App St. with 9 seconds left! 2 point conversion away from tying the game!

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:24 PM

App St. takes the kickoff to midfield with 19 seconds left. This is the GOTW so far!

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:22 PM

UNC returns the onside kick for a TD to likely put the game away. Up 63-55 with 28 seconds left and App St. has 1 timeout left.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:18 PM

App St. QB overthrows a wide open receiver in the endzone on their 2 point try. UNC may survive this one after leading 41-21 starting tge 4th quarter.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 07:14 PM

Lots of entertaining early games. NC State survived ECU because ECU has a worse kicker than KU. UNC and App St. coming down to the last minute with App St. driving down 7. Iowa's offense looked pathetic against South Dakota St. managing just a field goal and 168 yards of offense. Their scores were a field goal and 2 safeties. Rutgers and BC was an entertaining game.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 12:38 PM

@FarmerJayhawk That game was so weird. TCU looked like KU did for most of the last 15 years in the first half and then looked like a B12 contender in the 2nd half. Colorado looked really good in the 1st half outside of not being able to finish drives and then couldn't do anything in the 2nd half.

Week 1 games • Sep 03, 2022 03:40 AM

How the hell is TCU winning at halftime at Colorado? If you just looked at the stats, you'd think Colorado had a 3 score lead right now instead of losing by 1.

@nwhawkfan said in Anybody ready for some football - -time for kickoff:

Game wasn't much of a measuring stick, but it's a W. Next two games on the road will give us a lot better idea.

This was still a measuring stick game because of how much KU has struggled to beat even mediocre to bad FCS teams in recent years and Tennessee Tech didn't really do much of anything until late when KU's starters were out of the game.

KU probably still gets blown out a couple of times this year, but I'm expecting KU to be competitive in a lot of their games this year and even pull an upset against a good team this season. This group has a lot of confidence right now and that do a lot for a team.

I'm still looking at 4 wins for this team and probably a last place finish or tied for last in the Big 12, but KU isn't going to be basically a bye week for teams this year.

KU looks solid enough to where they could upset someone who ends up finishing in the top half of the Big 12.

@stoptheflop said in Anybody ready for some football - -time for kickoff:

5 RBs have carried the ball, but only 64 yds rushing. Kind of disappointing, but not on the scoreboard.

KU has generally had a short field tonight so total yards shouldn't be too high, but a 5.5 ypc is a solid number.

How early does Bean start playing in the 2nd half?

@FarmerJayhawk said in Anybody ready for some football - -time for kickoff:

ABOLISH GOAL LINE FADE

Only if you don't have a 6-5 or taller receiver that can out jump DB's. If you have a receiver like that, then a goal line fade is still a solid play choice.

@Kcmatt7 it absolutely will destroy the field. I believe that’s why Sporting didn’t want the D2 championship back. Too much work to keep the field in soccer shape.

The D2 title game is well after soccer season is over so that's not a reason I'm believing for not renewing the D2 title game. As for not wanting KU footballas a temporary tenant, that would be more reasonable as Children's Mercy already hosts 2 pro soccer teams and there is some significant overlap between MLS, NWSL, and college football schedules in September and October.

This absolutely is about the NCAA stuff and being prepared whenever that ruling comes down. Dooley might be doing behind the scenes stuff now, but he's someone very familiar with how Self runs things and if KT and/or Self get suspended, Dooley can step right into a coaching role while suspensions are being served. This was absolutely done in preparation for a potential NCAA ruling.

I would assume this is so someone can step straight into a coaching role once punishment is handed down. Dooley knows how Self runs things so there won't be much of a learning curve if Dooley has to step into KT's role.

Conference realignment • Aug 19, 2022 11:35 PM

@Gorilla72 You do know A&M is ranked 6th in the preseason poll and one of the few teams to have multiple wins over Alabama since they moved, on top of having a Heisman winner. They haven't exactly been irrelevant over the last 10 years. That's on top of the expansions to Kyle Field during that time as well. I'd very strongly argue that A&M is the one school out of the 4 that have left so far that has been better off since leaving the Big 12.

@drgnslayr I also didn't want to see Iowa because they were one of the few teams that could keep up with KU on offense amd of they made a few shots, then...

Chris... Chris... Chris! Welcome! • Aug 03, 2022 07:51 PM

@Kcmatt7 He's got to be a strong recruiter because of Self and Townsend being off the road and Norm never being considered a strong recruiter.

Battle 4 Atlantis brack was released today. KU plays NC State in the opening game. Dayton/Wisconsin is the other match up on our half of the bracket so @wissox may get his KU/Wisconsin match up.

The other half of the bracket is USC/BYU and Tennessee/Butler so it's set up for a potential KU/Tennessee championship game.

Conference realignment • Jul 28, 2022 11:40 PM

@bskeet said in Conference realignment:

For Kansas, the question is: Are we better off (long term) as a big fish in a little pond or a little fish in The B1G pond?

That's an easy question, the Big 10. Both athletically and academically. Athletically, if KU joined, TV revenues would essentially double once KU got full shares if the Big 10 ends up anywhere near the $100 million per school number floating out there. Even if it's in the $75-80 million range, that's still significantly more than the Big 12 even if KU doesn't get full revenue immediately like Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers went through. That extra money helps fund renovations to Memorial Stadium, helps fund NIL programs, and helps increase funding coaching and recruiting budgets for olympic sports programs which helps those programs of which KU is pretty good at several such as volleyball, soccer, and track and field.

Academically, KU is far better off in the Big 10 than the Big 12. KU is number 2 or 3 currently in prestige in the league (Texas is better and TCU is as well depending on metrics used). KU would actually be near the bottom of the Big 10 in regards to academic prestige, but being in that group of AAU programs would help significantly elevate KU's academic standing.

This doesn't mean that KU should act like Missouri a decade ago in trying to get into the Big 10, but working to get a Big 10 invite should be a top priority of Girod and Goff. The biggest thing on the athletic side KU could do is to move forward with Memorial Stadium renovations regardless of where of where the football team at this point. Those renovations would show a long term commitment to growing the football program and making it consistently competitive which is something the Big 10 would be looking at.

I don't know enough about the academic side of things to say what KU needs to focus on to make themselves more attractive to the Big 10, but I'm sure @FarmerJayhawk could give some insight on that front as to what KU could do academically to make themselves more attractive to the Big 10.

@Jethro Prove to me how this statement goes against Vitale's long held beliefs that current players shouldn't be penalized by the NCAA for the crimes of previous players no longer involved in the program?

IARP update • Jul 28, 2022 05:06 PM

@Jethro said in IARP update:

@Texas-Hawk-10 Vitale did a 180, so you might be on to something. It's just surprising to get the Dook treatment from ESPN.

Vitale did not do a 180 and this isn't KU getting treated like Duke by ESPN. Vitale's statement made zero mention about the innocence or guilt of KU in regard to the violations and didn't come from an article on ESPN's website, at least not an easily accessible one that I'm aware of. His statement was complaining about how long it's taking the NCAA/IARP to rule on these cases. We're not far away, about 2 months, from KU's case entering into it's 4th year without a resolution. That's Vitale's issue and is independent of what school is involved with a case being dragged out that long be it KU, Memphis, LSU, or NC State before they finally received their penalties.

IARP update • Jul 28, 2022 01:50 PM

@Jethro said in IARP update:

Interesting that ESPN never covered the Self/Townsend stay at home during recruiting story. More interesting is Dick Vitale commenting that all charges should be dropped: https://247sports.com/Article/Kansas-basketball-violations-NCAA-should-drop-Jayhawks-recruiting-case-Dick-Vitale-says-190507204/. ↗

So, why is ESPN suddenly on our side? Two years ago, Vitale was smearing us. Hmmm...

It's not necessarily ESPN being on our side. Vitale's comments are in line with his views of wanting NCAA issues to be resolved quickly. We are now beginning year 4 since the NCAA allegations were delivered to KU so that's what Vitale is taking issue with.

I would also be very surprised if there's a post season ban for KU at this point since all players involved are long gone and the NCAA is shifting towards not punishing current players with postseason bans for issues this old. I could see Self being suspended a season happening, and I've thought all along that Townsend wouldn't survive this and I still believe that will end up being the case with him.

IARP update • Jul 26, 2022 08:06 PM

@wissox said in IARP update:

@Kcmatt7 Unless I read it wrong I read Self saying we're behind because our kids don't have agents and brand new cars which sounds like cheating. Has the landscape of college athletics changed so much that athletes are allowed to have agents and brand new cars? The way I read it is Self saying we've got to catch up in cheating since everyone is.

Yes, it has changed that much. I believe one of the big reasons the Big 12 ended up hiring Yormark as commissioner is his familiarity with NIL as his previous job was with Jay-Z's sports agency which has NCAA certified agents. In regards to players having agents and getting new cars, as long as that player has an NIL deal with a dealership, getting a car is part of that deal. Quin Ewers who just transferred to Texas is now driving a brand new Aston Martin thanks to the NIL deals he signed.

IARP update • Jul 26, 2022 01:13 PM

@BeddieKU23 I take that quote as Self deflecting a bit to not throw KU under the NCAA and IARP bus anymore than he has to and because Self also tends to be pretty self depreciating at times and that reads like one of those times. Remember that part of why KU is under investigation is because of a player that received a brand new car either before he arrived on campus or shortly after arriving prior to NIL making stuff like that okay. KU hiring Altius Sports to oversee the NIL program means there's going to be plenty of NIL money for athletes at KU.

For more evidence that KU's NIL program is in a good place, look at two recruits in the 2023 class that have interest in KU, Mikey Williams and Bronny James. Those two have massive social media followings and will likely be going wherever they can make the most money, whether that's professional or NIL money. Both names have been connected to KU as a possible destination which says KU can offer each of them a very strong NIL deal to come to KU.

Also, look at someone like Cam Martin. Why did he choose to not transfer out after the season and go somewhere he could star and get all the playing time he wants? NIL money is probably the answer to that question.

IARP update • Jul 25, 2022 03:15 PM

It sounds like KU has their NIL program running pretty strongly now which is huge positive if Self and KT aren't out traveling to recruit.

This also doesn't look like it'll be a very big class for KU as far as numbers go. Cam Martin and Jalen Wilson are the only two I'd prepare to lose for sure and then prepare for the potential of McCullar, Dick, and Rice although I don't think all 3 leave. As weak as the 2023 class is overall, Self's probably going to lean much more heavily on the transfer market than HS kids to replace those who leave after this season.

Overall, I don't think this move will have a significant impact on KU's recruiting for 2023 because I think it'll a more transfer heavy class than HS heavy class due to the overall weakness of this class.

Big 12 Expansion • Jul 22, 2022 07:12 PM

@jayballer67 Unequal revenue shares are a big part of why Colorado left the Big 12 in the first place so of course they're not going to be happy about that.

2023 Recruiting • Jul 21, 2022 02:11 PM

@jayballer67 With his social media following, I think college and NIL money is where he'll end up. He has almost 4 million followers on Instagram so he's one of those guys who could potentially rake in 8 figures in NIL money in college. That's not likely to happen if he goes pro instead of college.

Mikey Williams will follow the money. Whatever option makes him the most money whether it's NIL or pro is where he'll end up. If he goes the college route and wants to come to KU, yes KU should take him because he is a very good player and plays a position of need for KU's 2023 class.

Big 12 Expansion • Jul 20, 2022 07:16 PM

@bskeet said in Big 12 Expansion:

@Kcmatt7 I think Oregon is not the top P12 target because the market (Portland) is smaller than than the Bay Area, Seattle, Phoenix and Denver.

Not saying it's right. Just saying that everything about what's going on seems to be best explained through the lens of money/revenue.

No true Big 12 Network means TV market size means very little to the Big 12 and their TV negotiations which is part of why Cal and Stanford aren't being brought up much. With a true Big 12 Network, you could absolutely guarantee the Big 12 would be trying to sell those two schools and gain access to a top 10 media market in the Bay Area. Since neither school draws big ratings and the Big 12 doesn't have a network to sell to TV distributors, Cal and Stanford have very little appeal to the Big 12 just like neither school wants much to do with the Big 12.

State of the Roster 2022 • Jul 17, 2022 07:14 PM

@FarmerJayhawk I would say TCU is also a very winnable game for KU this year.

State of the Roster 2022 • Jul 16, 2022 05:39 PM

Build on the momentum of the second half of the season, especially the last three games. The biggest source of optimism is that how the offense seemed to start clicking at the end of the year and now Leipold has had an off-season and spring practice to to really install the offense instead of the basic version of it KU had to run last year due to limited time to learn tge system last year.

Practically speaking, this is year 1 for Leipold and staff since they didn't get to install anything until fall camp. This is so still one of the youngest rosters in the Big 12 so this season should be all about building on the last 3 games from last year and continuing to gain experience and build quality depth. If KU could go 3-3 in the first half of the season, which I think is realistic given the schedule, that'd be huge for KU because it would most likely mean there's an early season Big 12 win mixed in there.
