After that though it's Texas Tech, Texas, and Baylor. Yeesh

Tech game is in Lawrence and we actually won in Lubbock and KU should be on a 4 game winning streak going in that game. I think KU has a really good chance in that one.

I will take a 12 point halftime lead every time. This also isn't the game I'm worried about since KU has seen pretty good at home this season.

@BeddieKU23 ISU has only beat a couple of SWAC teams this year and that's it. Even KSU beat them by 9 this year.

Covid postponements won't come from the players, it will come from either the coaches or support staff if anything happens because the players have sacrificed social lives during the season to minimize the risks of an outbreak.

@tundrahok scares me if we haven't.

If KU has to postpone games due to Covid, it won't be because of the players, at least not at this point. Christmas break was big hurdle for the players to get past without Covid and they did. They're pretty much isolated in McCarthy and really only leave for team related activities. Their food is brought to them, they have online classes, and generally don't have any interactions with the student body right.

Any Covid outbreak within the program is going to come from the coaching staff or the support staff who aren't isolated in McCarthy and do have to interact with other people.

Have just as many losses as Duke. Can't really talk tbh but yeah they both are not making the tournament

Do you seriously think a team that is currently ranked 27 in NET ratings is going to miss the tournament? You might be the only person who thinks KU misses the dance entirely right now. All 7 of KU's losses are to Quad 1 teams in NET ratings to go along with 4 wins over Quad 1 teams right now.

Duke on the other hand has multiple losses to Quad 3 teams (sub 100) and only 1 Quad 1 win over 47th ranked Clemson. Duke and Kansas may each have 7 losses, but those 7 losses are not equal. Duke will not be a tournament team, but KU absolutely will be in the NCAA tournament this year anywhere between a 7-10 seed unless they're able win against Texas or Baylor in their last 2 games in which case KU likely moves into the 5-6 seed range.

Do you see this team making the tournament?

The hawks play 4 games in the next 8 days including two this week against Iowa St, who has played West Virginia and Oklahoma to single digit defeats this week, they are playing better. Oklahoma St downed Texas and already beat us badly. The last 3 games don't look promising.

Say this team goes 2-5 the rest of the way and has 12 losses going into the Big-12 tourney if they have one. Is a 14-12 team really going to make it?

I guess if the guys are going to have more games in March they will have to find a way to upset some teams

Yes this team will be in the tournament this year. It'll be the lowest seed KU has been under Self, but yes, this team will make the tournament. KU was projected to be a 5-6 seed before yesterday and will likely end up somewhere in the 8-9 range.

Wins against Creighton, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and West Virginia with no bad losses in the eyes of the committee is a solid resume at this point. 6 of KU's 7 current losses are to teams projected to be a 5 seed or higher. It also helps that the B12 is currently either 1 or 2 in strongest conferences in the country.

As long as KU doesn't lose to ISU or KSU, KU will once again be in the NCAA tournament.

Oklahoma St. over Texas in double OT.

Huggy Bonus Game Thread • Feb 06, 2021 11:03 PM

There's only two good defenders on this team so team defense will is going to be subpar. That's the more concerning issue to me because this team was still supposed to a good defensive team, not as good as last, but still good.

The offense was never going to be the strength of this team so the defense had to step up this year and they've failed miserably on that end of the floor.

@approxinfinity said in Living in the ~~After~~ **Never** glow:

@Texas-Hawk-10 I don't mind Dave having touches. That's different than usage, if the ball comes out sometimes. It increasingly has, and that's good. Also, I'm not advocating benching Dave, only learning to play without him as the focal point on O, same as Marcus. He has been significantly better recently, but I do think it's fools gold in the tournament if it's Dave or bust. You're saying Dave has been KUs best offensive player by the numbers and it's time I actually look at them, well I was looking at them until the last few games when he stopped being a total game killer. He's been much improved. If you're saying quantitative stats I have no doubt he has big totals due to his usage rate, especially against less athletic competition. And he's shooting 1.000 from 3 right? :)

Tell me Enaruna wouldn't benefit from having the touches that Dave gets? That's my point. I think Bill can and should start building other people up.

Below is an explanation of what the PER stay is from its creator.

"The player efficiency rating (PER) is a rating of a player's per-minute productivity.

To generate PER, I created formulas -- outlined in tortuous detail in my book "Pro Basketball Forecast" -- that return a value for each of a player's accomplishments. That includes positive accomplishments such as field goals, free throws, 3-pointers, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals, and negative ones such as missed shots, turnovers and personal fouls.

Two important things to remember about PER are that it's per-minute and is pace-adjusted."

15.0 is considered average for a PER. Dave is at a 30.9 PER in Big 12 play. I don't believe there's any scenario in Bill Self should be taking minutes, touches, or usage away from Dave for someone like Tristan Enaruna whose PER is 14.2 in conference play and 10.5 overall for the season.

Is Tristan going to start for KU at any point in his career? I doubt it unless you think Tristan is going to be a better player than Jalen Wilson any time in the next 3 years.

So to answer you question, yes, Tristan probably benefits from a few more touches a game, but that's the most important question though.

Do you think taking touches from KU's best and most consistent offensive threat and giving them to the third string 4 man makes the difference between KU making it to the Final Four or not this season? If the answer to that question is no, which it is because this is a 2nd round at best team this year, then it's not worth it to take touches away from your best offensive player.

KU isn't winning the Big 12 this season and will be fighting to finish above .500 in conference play. That said, KU still controls their own fate to finish 2nd in conference this year because KU is only 1 game out of 2nd place right now, and KU's best chance at a 2nd place finish rests with playing through Dave and building the offense around what it looked like a couple of years ago when Dedric Lawson was the focal point. That's what KU needs to do the rest of the way this season to give themselves the best chance of having the most success possible this season.

Dearmon • Feb 03, 2021 10:06 PM

Debord's most recent stint as an OC in the college ranks was at Indiana in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, Indiana was 69th in total offense and in 2018, Indiana improved to 52nd in total offense. In the two years before that in 2015 and 2016, Debord was OC at Tennessee and he took Tennessee from 52nd in total offense in 2015 to 40th in 2016. Tennessee was also 3rd in PPG in the SEC in 2015 and 2nd in the SEC in PPG in 2016 at around 35 ppg each season.

Debord can put together a good offense in a good defensive league. He's not going to work miracles with KU's offense because he had Josh Dobbs and Jalen Hurd at Tennessee and freshman Peyton Ramsey his last year at Indiana. He had weapons at QB at those jobs so if KU can get competent QB, Debord can create a solid offense for KU.

Living in the ~~After~~ **Never** glow • Feb 03, 2021 09:49 PM

@approxinfinity said in Living in the ~~After~~ **Never** glow:

I'm not saying Dave sucks. Bill might be setting unfair expectations for him if he thinks he's Doke 2.0. Doke had a freakishly high standing jump at the combine. He was unstoppable around the rim. After his physical transformation he was getting a lot of blocks. None of this is Dave. Different player. Usage rate is too high. If the rest of the team can't score then they need to learn, not feed Dave every possession. Because a 35% usage rate for Dave isn't going to always fly. Sometimes they'll shut him down, sometimes the situation will demand a 3 pt shooter at the 5, given that the rest our personnel is struggling on both ends and the potential to be playing from behind.

Self knows this, I think. I think Dave's usage rate will dip toward the end of conference play as we try to get other people going.

Self speak translation on what Self was saying when comparing Dave to Doke. Self wasn't sure comparing the two ability wise because there is no comparison there. He was comparing on court production because Doke didn't exactly put up eye popping numbers. 13.7 ppg and 10.5 rpg aren't unreasonable numbers for a big man in Self's system and several bigs have put up better numbers than that.

Also, please help understand your logic of Dave's usage rate being too high. I will immediately correct you by telling you that Dave's usage rate is just a tick under 30% on the year and in conference play.

I also don't understand the logic of not trying to give Dave a touch every possession when advanced metrics say he is by far KU's best offensive player. Teams should be game planning to stop Dave because he's shown to be KU's best offensive threat this year. And your solution is to sit KU's best offensive player rather than adjust the game plan to get Dave his touches which honestly are not enough at this point.

If other players are struggling to score, why in the world would you want to decrease the touches of the one guy who's shown consistently that he's willing and able to be an effective scorer around the basket?

It's time you go and actually look at the numbers for KU this year and see that Dave has been by far KU's best player on offense. This is an extremely flawed team so there will be sacrifices no matter who you play. Obviously with Dave, rebounding and rim protection are sacrificed with him on the floor. If this team was actually good defensively, then there would be an argument for sitting Dave more and playing a smaller line up, but because this team can't score for shit this year, KU cannot afford to sit and reduce the usage of their best offensive player who is Dave this year.

Rock Chalk game thread • Feb 03, 2021 03:07 PM

@BeddieKU23 Player PER's support that Dave should be the top option for KU. His PER for the year is 25.3 and it's been even better in B12 games at 30.7 which is in Doke territory from last year. His FG% is north of 50% in Big 12 games. Ochai is the current top option based on FGA and scoring, but it really needs to be Dave. Dave should be taking at least 15 shots per game at this point and I wouldn't mind him taking 20 shots per game right now. He needs to be scoring 20 a game for KU at this point.

Agbaji on ESPN mock draft board • Feb 02, 2021 10:29 PM

Agbaji's athleticism has always been what has gotten the attention of NBA scouts and his lack of skill has been what's kept him from making the jump. Agbaji needs to keep working on his shooting so he can become a 3&D player at the NBA level and that's his shot at making the league.

Debord has a national title as an OC, coached Tom Brady, and has NFL experience with the Seahawks and Bears. Those aren't bad selling points to trot out for recruits. Bummed it wasn't Warinner, but this isn't a terrible choice.

Worst KU Team Since? • Feb 01, 2021 07:07 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in Worst KU Team Since?:

I really only think this team is marginally better with Silvio. Unless I'm remembering Silvio wrong, there is a reason he was only getting a few minutes per game...

Again, Silvio doesn't change much offensively because he was never that good on offense. Silvio would've been a difference maker for KU on defense this year. He was by far the best rim protector and rebounder this team had going into the season. He was also quick enough to guard and switch on the perimeter.

This team would still be a train wreck on offense because they can't shoot and Silvio doesn't change that problem, but that 3 game losing streak doesn't happen and KU has at most 4 losses instead of 6 and I think this team would only have 3 losses instead of 6 with Silvio this year.

Worst KU Team Since? • Feb 01, 2021 06:01 PM

I cannot overstate how much losing Silvio hurt this team on defense. His departure completely changed the make up and dynamic of this KU roster. He could play the 4 and 5 spots for Self and was KU's best rebounder and interior defender. Offensively, Silvio wouldn't have provided much because he just wasn't a good offensive player yet, but his defense and rebounding were game changers for KU this season because he was a rim protector and top end rebounder.
