@DanR It's kind of the same reasoning that I voted against Gooden. He seemed aloof during his time at KU. He was a great player, but left a team after the 2002 that had so much potential for 2003. His going pro was something I didn't understand. I do get the money is enticing, but I recall he had a decent family and had he stuck around with Kirk and Nick, and Langford, and Lee, and Simien, and Miles, goodness gracious, we might have won every game by 20 points!
Drew Gooden was a top 5 pick in the draft, that's why he left after 2002. Once a player is projected to be drafted that high, it's very rare to see a player of that caliber return to school the following season. Off the top of my head, Tim Duncan is the only player I can think of that was a projected lottery pick (top 3 to be specific in 1997) and came back for his next season. It's the same reason why Julian Wright left after 2007 instead of sticking around for 2008 and getting himself a ring. It's why Cole Aldrich, the Morris Twins, and T-Rob each left after their junior seasons as well.

I watched the first half (cuz im old and need my rest) of the 2008 game vs NC last night. It was a beautiful thing. NC was the overall #1 seed and averaged about 300 pts per game that year (something like that). They were supposed to steamroll poor, pathetic (35-3) KU. I remembered beating them, but I forgot that we got out to a 40-12 first half lead. I should have just stayed up and watched the whole thing because I was amped!
So, after watching the 1988 game a few nights ago, where we were also supposed to get steamrolled by a far superior, freakishly athletic OU team - (and if I remember correctly we also beat them) I've come to the conclusion that when we get to the title game next year, we should pray that we get to play a far superior team who is supposed to crush us.
That happened in 2012 and Kansas lost.

I really don’t feel the least bit sorry for colleges. The athletic budgets are bloated beyond being responsible. Now the guy living paycheck to paycheck? Yikes, he’s in trouble. The door to door salesman? Ouch. Waitresses - not so great.
It's not an issue for major conference programs because of their media contracts. Small conference schools are going to struggle with this because they don't generate profit in any sport and generally operate on the red. Fundraising is also going to be difficult for those schools because of the number of people getting laid off and furloughed right now and can't afford to give extra to help out when the school's need that extra help.

Doke has been named the National Defensive Player of the Year by the NABC. Surprised it didn't go to Garrett, but if anyone but Garrett was going to win it, Doke was by far the best alternative.
@nwhawkfan And then follow it up with the 2010 title game. That might be the most under appreciated team of the Bill Self era. That was the most loaded front court in recent history. Cole, the Morris Twins, T-Rob, and Jeff Withey (after Fall semester was over). Plus a senior Sherron Collins running the show, and the second best OAD to roll through Lawrence in Xavier Henry. 8 guys from that roster played in the NBA at some point which is more than the title team had.
People talk about the missed opportunity the following year because KU lost in the Elite 8, but to me, this was the second best team of the Bill Self era only to the title team until this season.

Not surprising honestly. I've been saying they wouldn't move on from Shaka until either their new arena opens up. Texas just doesn't care enough about basketball and Shaka had Texas on enough of a run at the end of the season that Texas was probably going to make the NCAA Tournament this season.

I wouldn't give up hope yet. I think you might be surprised, especially the way staff has attacked this the last couple of years, not going to take just anyone - -BUT if it is a right fit it can still very easily happen
What KU needs isn't on the transfer market right now. They need the same thing as last off-season and that's an outside shooter. The higher ranked guards on the transfer market right now are more scorers than shooters. If there was an Isaiah Moss type transfer out there, KU might get involved at that point. There's not one of those out there right now so Self hasn't been pushing hard for any transfers at this point.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Should we care about ratings that won't exist, for theoretical games that won't be played, as a basis for making distinctions among teams in fantasies about national championships that should not be awarded?
Why would ratings matter? If so, let Duke, UK and UNC fight it out every year.
What are you talking about? Where did I say anything about ratings for non existent games or handing out a national championship this year?
Bskeet was talking about people being into Loyola, VCU, George Mason, and other mid major programs that have made Final Four runs in recent history because they were good stories. I said the TV ratings for those semifinal games are among the least watched Final Four games because at the end of the day, people would rather watch a Final Four game between blue bloods.
@bskeet They're good stories no doubt, but those are also among the lowest rates games at that stage of the tournament because those schools lack recognition of the blue bloods.

Not every student has somewhere to go home to though, especially international students due to travel restrictions. Those are the students still on college campuses because they literally couldn't go home. I believe Doke and Silvio are the two KU basketball players still on campus. I believe someone here said that Tristan was able to get home to the Netherlands before travel restrictions were put in place.

Doesn't sound like KU is really going after any transfers as of today. Doing some reaching out, but nobody has been offered or anything like that.
There's not really the one thing KU truly needs for next season out there and that's a deadeye shooter. Unless a deadeye shooter becomes available, I'm fine with KU keeping what they have for next season.
Garrett and Doke's ankles were my fears about KU in the tournament in real life. We saw how ineffective Garrett was playing with a bum hamstring last year so playing on sprained ankle would probably look pretty similar because it would hamper his lateral mobility and his ability to change direction quickly

@Texas-Hawk-10 if he averaged over 5 a game that would be impressive! Rules and all...
Since that number is based on per 40 minutes, you can average over 5 per 40 minutes, but nice try.
Oh, you didn’t clarify you were talking about his fouls per 40 minutes. That’s a different thing than an average. His average for fouls is 1.7 byw
4.7 fouls per 40 minutes is...umm not good.
Sub 5 fouls per 40 minutes is actually good for a big man. Doke averaged over 5 fouls per 40 minutes until this season, Mitch was over 6 fouls per 40 minutes in his first 3 seasons, and Silvio's small sample size is at 8 fouls per 40 minutes. Dave knows how to play defense without fouling.
@tundrahok He ate himself out of basketball because he didn't have any self control when it came to his diet. He's not as big as he used to be, but he's still pretty chunky if you follow him on any social media platforms.
Just imagine how much better a player Sherron could've been if he could've said no to a cheeseburger.
I'm calling it, Kansas by 7!

@BShark said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
@Texas-Hawk-10 think we will need all three at some point.
We will, but I think most of Mitch's minutes are going to come at the 4 spot next season. I think the only time he plays the 5 is when Self goes really small or both Dave and Silvio get in foul trouble.
@BShark said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
Dave is likely going to improve and get some slack from the refs. I think more than anything we need Mitch as a back-up 5.
The back up 5 is going to be Silvio because he is the best rebounder of the group of bigs KU will have next season.

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
How many games will BD foul out?
Under 5. Dave averages under 5 fouls per game so he knows how to play without fouling. His issues on that end are going to be that he's a bad rebounder for his size. He only gets 18.5% defensive rebounds, and he doesn't block shots, only a 3.3% block rate last season.
@approxinfinity Tristan didn't play defense, and Jalen has comparable athleticism to Ellis so he's going to be a subpar defender as well.
Mitch is the best defensive post player KU will have next season. McCormack is not a strong defender. Mitch is also the best help defender Self has ever had in the paint. Mitch will play 20-25 minutes per game next season. On offense, he's going to be the guy setting screens and doing all of the dirty work on offense for KU. He's going to fill a role that's needed next season that wasn't needed this year because of how dominant Doke was.
@KirkIsMyHinrich said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
Mitch has made 10 3-pointers (10/30 = 33.3%) in 1,032 minutes played at Kansas. That's an average of one made 3-pointer every 103 minutes. He's not stretching anything at that rate.
The year you might want to focus on is 2017-18 when Mitch played the 4. The other two years, he was primarily at the 5 because of Doke's injuries. He played away from the basket where he had his highest PER, highest offensive rebound rate, and highest block rate, and also his minutes per game and best shooting season.
@approxinfinity said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
@Texas-Hawk-10 I am definitely taking the under on 20-25 minutes for Mitch. I think Self is perfectly happy having Mitch at practice and on the bench for 2 years instead of 1 regardless of his role in-game.
Self didn't redshirt Mitch to sit him next year. If that's Self's plan, then what was the purpose of redshirting him this year? If that's the idea, then that's a total waste of a scholarship this season when Self could've used it on another player. Self redshirted Mitch to play him this season.
@BShark said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
If Mitch starts and Bill goes back to two bigs I might have a bonfire with some alumni shirts. Please no, Bill.
Mitch is a stretch 4 on offense, he's a face up guy that can knock down perimeter shots. Mitch playing the 4 isn't the same as Dave playing the 4.
@approxinfinity said in Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU:
@Texas-Hawk-10 well he gets a free year of college and gets to play on possibly 2 championship contending KU teams. It seems like that's what the kid grew up dreaming of. I don't think not starting next year was a deal breaker to red shirting.
But Self isn't redshirting someone for their would be senior season to sit them on the bench the following season. Mitch isn't the guy that's going to out up eye popping stats, but he's the garbage man/glue guy on the team next season. He's going to play, and he's going to get 20-25 mpg next season because of all of the intangibles he brings to the table.
@FarmerJayhawk I still think Mitch starts at the 4 next season. That's the primary reason he redshirted this season was because of the available PT next year.

Those were his fr state when he was injured and barely played. He was a lot better this year.
I got you @BShark the guy is going to play well for us, contribute bigtime. He's going to get PT, no doubt.
Who does he play over next season? Out of Ochai, Braun, Enaruna, Lightfoot, and Wilson, who does he play ahead of?
I don't see TGF having a big impact next season. He only had 3 games last season where he shot over 50% from the field. He was 27% from 3 and 37% overall. If he shot that poorly against defenses nowhere near what he'll see in the B12, I struggle to see him cracking the rotation next season once Self trims it.
I just don't see him being a significant contributor for KU next year with the depth Self has at the 3 and 4 spots. Ochai, Braun, Enaruna, Lightfoot, and Wilson that are already here are his competition for minutes. I think it's far more likely he would be a factor in 2021-22 and even then, I could see him getting stuck in a logjam.
@BShark Svi was too one dimensional to me. He's a sniper an not much more. His only other skill to me that was above average was his ball handling. He was a subpar defender and rebounder and average at driving.
