Samford played their average game which is forcing 17 turnovers, scoring 86 points per game and making over 10 three pointers at 40+ %. We on the other hand made a few more turnovers than average, hit about twice as many treys as usual and scored almost 20 points more than our average for the last half of the season. We shoot lousy from deep and make risky passes that are our SOP. The flagrant technical was a deliberate attack on Hunter's injured shoulder and when Hunter missed both free throws the guy celebrated like an a##hole.
We couldn't score 93 how did we do it.
Effin A Tweety Bird.
Getting ugly.

Furph's two early threes REALLY helped (and one by Nic). Could have gone wrong early
And certainly has gone wrong a lot. No three's since early.
@approxinfinity said in Sams club game chat:
Hunter has shown a lot of composure outside of 1 or 2 possesions
Yes and four consecutive turnovers trying to feed him. Lol.
We couldn't play any better and we couldn't play any worse.
The Samford Freds are the 6th highest scoring team nationally. They shot 39% from three 335/852. Our beloved Jayhawks rang up at 32% 180/547. I trust we will run them off the three point line and not watch Elmarko and Nick chase them from behind to the layup zone over and over until I puke.
On the positive side it sounds like Hunter may be fine unless he gets targeted. It would be Pepto Bismol to my soul if we look really sharp and dull their sharp shooters while we snipe, maybe in camo uni's, them to the tune of one three for every turnover we bumble fumble ourselves. Let's give their asses the bum-rush out of the tourney.
It was really real really.
Hang together guys and keep moving the ball.
Come on boys.
When Jamari squares up he can make it.
WTF?
A rare chance to shine for some of these guys. No fear.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in No fear, the future is wide open, playing with freedom thread:
Holy crap!
Cincy MADE 16 3 pt shots tonight. That’s like six games worth for us!
I hope our small ball lineup is better equipped to handle that!
If our remaining KJ, JF, DH, NT, EJ, PB and JM score up to their averages we have 42 points in the bank. I hope for a 40% three ball night please. Will Bill want to feed PB as our first option or what? Even if everyone scores in double digits circa 70 points it may not be enough.
It will be key for us to hit about 3 to 4 more triples than usual and keep them off the offensive boards.
We didn't play that badly and played hard. Their freshman center hit some baskets like a guy who hits golf balls through a tree without touching anything. I think Dajuan did more than his part and Kevin was a little rusty but glad he was back. Hunter was dogged and swarmed for sure. We just had another 25 rebound game like the 26 against TT. KJ ends up away from the basket action and that is his main stat place. Elmarko got us into position to get a chance but we fell away at the end. Furphy is looking like he is not comfortable or confident right now.

The officiating was not great, but I think I have been sensitized to horrible officiating because it didn't strike me as egregiously bad as it was with other games.
I did want to ask about that layup that Kevin missed on the fast break in the second half-- I thought a Baylor guy hit the backboard as his shot was coming off the rim.. Isn't that basket interference? I know they called a goal-tending a few min earlier that apparently was controversial, but that's no excuse to swallow the whistle on that one.... Did I not see that correctly? There was no mention by Fran and John (not exactly evidence I would ever build a case on.)
Yep you could hear the backboard thud easily.
Furphy not looking to shoot the three it seems like. Better him than anyone else.
@wissox said in Wounded Jayhawks game thread:
@Zabudda They only have 23 points
Thank goodness. We held them to 35 which is the cap if we are to get out of the sixties and have a chance.
They are picking our D apart.
@RockChalkinTexas said in Wounded Jayhawks game thread:
Bench ain't gonna cut it
They are so scared of making a mistake or missing a shot it's a killer.
Nick thinking too much and misses his stutter shot.
Turnover to three and a bad call.
We had a bad game. Next game may be better.
Whoopie!
@KirkIsMyHinrich said in SEND TEXAS TO SEC WITH A BIG AFH LOSS:
Good thing Hunter caught that or Marko would be on the bench
Hunter had that WTF look in his eyes.
I didn't anticipate 45 points.
Furphy 4 boards and Dajuan with 4 dimes.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in McCullar out vs Baylor:
@Zabudda are you saying that's a winning total in your dream?
Yes.
Hunter 20, KJ 15, Dajuan 15, Furph 15 and Elmjamparknick 5 am I dreaming and reliving the 70's? There was my gf. Tootsie Taylor in the 70's and she was no nightmare.
Not that I've seen.
I'm reading draft analysis' of JayFurp and the advice is for him to wait a year to muscle up. Of course his shooting was his main appeal and one reporter offered that Furphy is going to have an astounding stretch of scoring any game now. His defense has improved and his willingness to crash the boards and run during fast breaks is a big plus. Of course all of this we already knew.
@MR11 said in "Never Again" - HCBS:
@Zabudda I'd say Furph is a scorer, just not in isolation situations. But that seems to be the only thing missing from his offensive game.
Agreed that his defense has also been notably improving and he even notched 3 steals in the OU game. It seems like he can still get hunted a bit when his man has the ball, but he is not much of a liability in off ball situations.
I worded my Furph blurb wrong and meant to say what you did,
Johnny is not just a scorer at the collegiate level. His nine boards were a difference maker. He is not getting torched on their end.
Hunter looked very good. KJ sat with foul trouble but returned with three of his quick at the rim makes.
Kevin just has to shoot closer to 50%. He just has to.
We had 25 total rebounds against Tech but won the stat yesterday. Jamari had another offensive board yesterday which is his specialty along with his specialty of playing low minutes.
I saw we returned to having a double digit deficit in the first half and mainly because we can't buy a trey. I didn't really miss it.
Juan hit some more underhand lay ups and that seems to make him kinda giddy.
Nick is fifty/fifty on whether he turns it over or misses a trey. It is not for lack of trying. He would be a kamakazi downhill into the chest driver if asked and would take charges if he could get in front of their guards more often.
Since Hunter has doink a threeitis I bet Parker would chuck up as many if asked.
@kjayhawks said in "Never Again" - HCBS:
@dylans if Elmarko would get aggressive he’d be fine. We don’t have a single player on offense that can pull up and hit a shot off the bounce. He can do that and has several times just doesn’t do it often enough. Nick at times has soon he can make athletic plays, just need consistency.
Elm has swished several and passed up more and could add sorely needed bench points. Bench points were 2 yesterday.
I find myself being hopeful.
Furphy has a shot at DD.
Johnny
Here is Nick.
Hell yeah!
Juan!!
OU giving us a chance but we might just barely make 60 pts.
DEFCON 2
7 turnovers
25% from 3.
How many doinks or that annoying shattering rim sounds did we offer up? That is why we lost I mean they shot lights out and didn't hit the 80 mark.
We can expect better from our three PG, SF and C. Hunter can do better than at the rim air balls. Surely he is practicing treys.
We are as thin as a wafer any way you turn it.
Hunter is a true post scorer. He has lost confidence in his three point shot but we need him to get over that.
Kevin is a volume shooter with a decent percentage from the floor overall but prone to cold spells along with the hot spells.
KJ scores as he always has and can come up with 15 on nights he makes all the two footers.
Juan is more and more figuring out the off the backboard layups and yes treys.
Johnny is an athletic scorer from deep, on the break and in the paint.
Nick has a good looking stroke and likes to posterize anyone at any time.
Elm can score from anywhere and is a very good midranger.
Still playing hard. Encouraging each other.
Fran seems happy.
They had five guys in the paint/
Hate to see coach Cal crying.
