I have been working on it a while today, and while I can't bring our posts over, I managed to get our user accounts ported over, and now I'm working on configuration a little more. I will keep the old board up but uneditable when I do this.

It took me a while to get here, I’ve warmed up to the Dajuan and JD comparisons. As QB you have a disproportionate impact on the outcome of a game compared to other positions. The position invites glory and scrutiny. Like the PG, the QB is the most direct link to the coach on the field, at least on offense; a PG at least as an opportunity to impact both ends of the court.

I agree with @DanR that 4 years is enough. In both cases there seemed to be a mental fatigue that set in by the end. Both DJ and JD are talented players, but I’m not sure either was fully mentally present their final year, and of course, both had pieces around them that variably, often inexplicably, melted down.

Some seasons its tough to get everything firing at the same time. There were games this season where JD was good and the defense sucked. And games where we did completely insane shit, like special teams giving up 6 points on a fumbled punt, and there were games where the playcalling sucked. So, it's tough to pin everything on JD. He ended his playing days at Lawrence on a down note, and that's unfortunate. But, if we had a little more stability in other areas of the game, maybe there would have been less pressure on JD. Who knows.

So, how bout that basketball team?

I'm looking again at whether I can upgrade from our version. I've tried twice unsuccessfully in the past. 3rd times the charm? I'll try to preserve as much as possible. If it doesnt' work this time though, I'm going the route we discussed.

@kjayhawks also, for the record, i think youre more reasonable than those two guys. I will happily engage about policy, and agree that both parties have done an increasingly shit job for a long long time and are effectively a duopoly destroying our country while enabling each other. But again, would rather discuss policy than the parties. Policy we can probably come up with some interesting ideas. But all the political dichotomies we try to impose on people “left” “right” “conservative” “liberal” “dem” “republican” are abstracting us away from the issues and are def tired and toxic. Played out.

@kjayhawks i just think its a mischaracterization of facts my man. Nobodys tongue was cut out. These people flipped the hell out and left. Nobody forced them out the door or silenced them. I am like 99% sure these guys were having tough times in general and it didnt have to do with the board. In fact, it may have been that they gravitated toward a MORE politically activated and homogenous bubble to express themselves in, something readily accessible somewhere else. I dont read these guys’ last posts and think “man these 2 guys were totally rational and reasonable and trying to stay away from politics but the woke ass lefties just would not let it go!” It was quite the opposite!

@kjayhawks also, i’m assuming cragarhawk is one of the relatives you mentioned. Go back and look at his last post. Its on his profile. He was batshit crazy at that point. I banned kuballin for 1 night because he wouldnt shut up shit talking juan during a game chat and cragar flew off the handle and got it in his head that it was political. So i think it would be good to reevaluate who was the one creating a toxic environment there.

And note, cragar was NOT banned for calling us a bunch of “fucking candy asses” despite what appears to be an earnest effort to get banned to prove his point. Lol. Sounds like in that post he mostly had a problem with America.

@kjayhawks sorry, its a sore spot and something i have strong feelings about. We did what we thought was right at the time. Remember we went through a pandemic together? That kind of affects things right? And very likely we are talking about correlation not causation regarding attrition and the discussion of politics

If you look around the internet I think you will find that an old school independent board like this with no monetization or surveilance capitalism is a bit of a unicorn. There are more populous places, but they may come at a price.

Still, i think we may be able to attract more users with a board reboot and better seo.

yeah. well, I mean I coudl keep the old board up with a link to the new one @BShark, and lock writing new posts on the old board.

@kjayhawks my point is that it rubs me raw when people try to blame discussing politics as the reason this board isnt as populous as it was. Thats just not fair. It happens that this country is very political and divided and having discourse is a solution to that fracture, we just got couched in parties too much snd ideas too little.

Jaybate was very open about discussing social issues. He saw the relationship between big business and basketball. he saw analogies between basketball and war.

Were we good at discussing politics? No, not really. Are we better now? I do think we are better at social discourse and of that i am proud, and think by being open to discussion we got there. Would i trade in any of our history if i could? No.

So I will bring up again what i brought up in a thread yesterday where I asked whether people are ok with restarting the board with latest and greatest everything. This will improve our search rankings and fix image uploading. We would lose our data but i could leave the old board up but maybe lock all threads

Natural attrition imo, this board spends zero on advertising and our indexing and ssl aren’t right leading to low search ranking (and of course google is enshittified and big corporate entities have a leg up)

At this point none of these guys are giving “in over their head” vibes (though its fluid of course) so i would struggle to tighten the rotation on any of them.

This should bode well for the grind ahead. I assume Self will tighten to 8 or so but if any get injured we have redundancy

Agree completely about the point differential being ridiculous. In soccer that point differential is in pool play where everyone plays everyone. I think we would have slaughtered some of the teams we didnt play

Curious about this. Definitely has a very different feel when the players are playing for a purse. Some of this is good: the team can rally around it and their destiny in the immediate future feels in their hands.

Wondering how much someone like Darryn gets when he doesnt play. Also walk ons etc. im assuming the percentages were set beginning of season?

I am also thinking about standing up the new board for kubuckets and asking everyone to move over. We would lose our data and have to start clean but stuff like indexing and image upload would just work. I think we are at a point where this makes sense if everyone is agreeable.
