I think it's reasonable to at least consider the possibility that the compliance Dept. May have slowed the process based on their findings. I mean why isn't it a real possibility that they found some things, and decided to delay it to an extent knowing BP was gonna have to sit some games? Obviously I have no more knowledge than anyone else on the situation but I think it's at least a reasonable possibility.
Or... Does some of it actually mesh with @jaybate-1-0's theory of recruitment embargos/stacks etc. Are we forced to take chances on some guys that may or may not be cleared. Taking the best of what's left so to speak in some instances.
@KirkIsMyHinrich sadly until they prove otherwise... I like our chances better on the road right now
@HighEliteMajor perhaps I'm making more of it than it is. But I feel like it's every tight game. Late game/late clock. Even last possession of the half. My contention has always been why not run offense? We hear Self always talk about the ball sticking. We see it stick... We see the ball move well at times and I feel like we're so much better when it does.
I don't know if it's the fear of turning the ball over or something? But I'd still maintain that the % of time we get a turnover or a silly shot that just as well be a turnover has to be large.
I think the point here is that sometimes it's better to play good defense and box out and clear the rebound than to swat
Self did a good bit of coaching actually to win the game. Going to the zone for a few possessions when we couldn't seem to keep them out of the paint and hadn't cleared a rebound since 1994.... Thought we should've stayed with it longer honestly. Also, as much as I hate to question a HOFer I just continually fail to understand why our late clock/late game offense is always stand and hold the ball and the one guy drive and throw up a circus attempt that usually gets blocked to the stone age.. The % of time it actually works cannot be that good. Although, its the only thing we've done in that situation for years upon years so perhaps it's more effective by the numbers than it looks
He actually sounded like they practiced this week with intention of some guys playing that couldn't. Not sure what to make of that
4th on Carter..
WVU hasn't ran good offense this half yet I don't think. Ugly
@approxinfinity couple the defender grabbed clear around his body. We would want that call for any of our guys anywhere the game was I think
@Jayballer54 ya there were a couple blatant fouls that weren't called first half. Like the Refs are telling Trae. "welcome to big12 road life son"
Wow the Chiefs pissed away another one
@HawkChamp I like it. It's one of those big words with a little meaning.
Positive spin on things for ya here... One of either WVU and OU is going to have a league loss today. Book it. 😊 KU is gonna have a great night getting their second Rd win in the conference and things are going to look much more exciting ahead. Game day! Rock Chalk all!!
@HighEliteMajor I notice it more even at HS and Jr. High levels these days. All that type of thing was strictly verboten when I played. In fact. Any sort of end zone celebration at all after a touchdown would get you unsportsmanlike... I'm not sure why or when it all became okay. I find myself looking for the kids that don't do it. It's a rarity.
@dylans damn well put
Can't speak to it's validity. But a friend today said he saw rumor on a friend's fb page that Preston is cleared. The friend of my friend is an Alumni. I have seen nothing yet that supports this. So who knows
@mayjay I understand your point of view. It probably is a pain in the ass that we will never fully understand. Obviously the situation isn't as clear cut as "the car is registered to BP or his mother and she has the documents to prove that and how it was acquired". That would be the day or 2 scenario... In which it would never have had to have multiple more facts gathered, multiple parties contacted and interviewed. Pain in the ass t's crossed and I's dotted. And weeks and weeks of getting to the bottom of it before having to turn it over to the NCAA. So while yes I will admit it is possible that everything is above board and it's just been a perfect storm/nightmare paperwork fiasco or whatever. I still contend it's reasonable to assume the opposite. Also feel it's okay to speculate. After all, that's all any of us do here about any subject honestly. Minus the posting of obvious facts, stats etc. When they are available.
I absolutely believe it's completely reasonable to think things are not above board in the BP situation. Why would we think anything else at this point honestly? What's the other option? The KU compliance office has it out for BP? Not likely. The KU compliance office has whiffed on this entire situation and is completely incompetent? Hmmm. I think let's hope not lest we find out what all other irregularities have been mismanaged thru the years. Is it speculation? Of course. But it's a very very reasonable assumption at minimum. I realize some don't wish to believe that and that's fine. But the other options are much like @JayHawkFanToo says in my opinion "grasping at straws". I also realize the entirety of society likes to decide what is politically correct and who can say what about what these days. But none of this is bashing BP or his family. Maybe other ppl and posts are doing that. But suggesting that there's been something illegally obtained in the eyes of amateurism with the current info we have is simply not and unreasonable thing at all.
It's a tough situation. Difficult to believe everything is above board when it takes this long to figure out. But I have not seen anyone bashing BP or his family. I'm sure it's happened. But also. You can read any type of negativity anywhere on any social media about anything. Even the most positive of situations. You can read some real trash about any player if you look for it I'm certain. The situation has been plenty largely publicized with constant reminders of "no news". It's unreasonable to expect not to have comments. Personally. I wish for the teams sake that the saga would just end. In any resolution. Don't care which
There's nothing to bash really. Just accept the fact that we're less talented and much thinner than were used to being. Some of the fight I feel like has also gone out of this team. Can't really know what's going on with them psychologically. Maybe they're tired of hearing about how they need some kid that will likely never suit up in order to be great. It's been a distraction from day one. Let's call a spade a spade. The entire team would be in a better place right now if BP was never here. And he can go ahead and move on for all I care. Play with who we have. Work to improve with what who is eligible and wants to work hard. The end
Thought Coach was gonna be on ESPN. Must be too pissed...
Way I see it. If we're gonna lose home games I guess we just have to win 9 on the road. Possible. Not probable
3 down
@HawkChamp Ayton is a force. Wish we had him
We shall see what happens with #3
Aggies go down at Bama
Wow. Butler hangin 53 in a the first on the #1 team in the land.
The press did work. But it is still ugly. Mostly on the entry. We throw it into a trap far too often. It will need to improve vastly. That press break will not get it done in Morgantown. The zone was interesting. It worked mostly. It could get better with more use. But too many times guys getting pulled to far out of position. I'd venture to say Bill let them have it as a bailout last night to pick up a road win and good for him. UT is poor enough from Trey to make that work. In it's present state it simply will not work vs a good Trey shooting team. Did see a lil bit of morphing as @jaybate-1-0 suggested in another thread. I like that and can see Coach using that to matchup on the Trey assassins if we have to go that route down the line. Garrett's defense is terrific. His game is terrific. He just doesn't score. But he makes things happen and others score from it. Fun to watch him. Newman.... What can ya say... Something is in his head. Low confidence. Or isnt happy here. Not meshing with the guys. Something. Idk what. But as I suggested on slack last evening. His body language very much reminds me of Keith Langford post Roy.
@HighEliteMajor true story. Any of those shirts would look great on the floor.
Exactly. Nobody is gonna remember or care how many wins or losses each lil10 team has right now if they all underachieve in the dance. It's a simple question of mind over matter. Like... November and Decembers wins can just be erased from your mind cause... They don't matter. If you fail when it counts. The conference as a whole does so at an almost embarrassing rate yearly. Oh, and it very much matters to me if the rest of the conference is any good. What else is gonna make us better? Or we can keep talking about how we fall short in the tournament more often than not but geez we love that lil10 conference streak
Let's talk about it in March. Every year we hear and talk about how great the lil10 is and every year the conference underperforms as a whole when it matters most. It's a rhetoric that simply must change before the lil10 is seen as formidable.
If the NCAA office is now closed thru Jan 1. I think it's fair to reason that he won't be playing any time before that. But it's a situation where he probably wouldn't anyway unless we're up by 30 with a few min to go. It will take some to time to get acclimated.
Well I know how much fun you're having. But technically speaking Elvis has been alive all this time and he "just went home". According to Tommy Lee Jones. 😁
Red in the face? Hope this team hasn't driven him to drink...
Very nice post. Love the Paul Newman reference!
May see CS go to some zones here or there in stretches. But I wouldn't look for it to last. He did imply it may go that way. But I felt was also clear he didn't wanna give these guys that bailout. He is gonna gamble that they get better playing M2M by seasons end. Right, wrong , or indifferent. Don't get your hopes up for a zone and certainly if you do see some of that, don't sell yourself on the fact that it's here to stay. It's not. Oh.... And anyone that wants to place blame on any one specific player should look at the added football guy... Everyone else on the team has actually won "a" basketball game before. 😊
Thought the guys played about as hard as they could for most of the game. Mental mistakes for sure. Missed shots. But honestly just flat got beat by a better team. We aren't terribly athletic as a whole and just plain eye test as very mediocre when not hitting a ridiculous % of 3s. By Kansas standards this will most likely be a tough season. But, everyone has those eventually.
Other than that Marshall would be almost 60 by then. I doubt we would give a look to anyone that old honestly.
Ya seriously. We should just stay where we belong. Beating on Toledo and Oakland by 50 in the fieldhouse. Dont step out of the comfort zone and play teams that may actually idk..... Prepare us to be a title contender. It's is fear. Whether anyone chooses to admit it or not. Wsu would probably have the advantage over the last 5 years or so if we had played them. They have largely been ranked and been just plain better than the competition we will face in the lil10. Playing teams like that elevates your game. If you don't think so, I'd ask yourself why the ACC produces a national champion a good percentage of the time. They elevate each other. The way to fall from the top is to assume there's no room to improve. We're Kansas. We're a national name with all the history. We're too good to play them.... Nope. Nope. Sorry. Right now. We're not good enough
@kjayhawks there hasn't been a single moment of the season so far that suggested to me this team would go undefeated. I'm not worried about that. That's a really tough thing to do even for unbelievably great team. This team is more like a work in progress. They have won some games big. But idk if they've won a big game. Possibly UK. Depends on how you view UK at that point of the season I guess. Missing pieces that we need and there's uncertainty that we will ever get them and absolutely uncertainty as to whether any of those pieces including BP will be effective even if we do. Still early. Many things can happen. I think many things are gonna have to happen before we start ranking this team as a favorite or a contender. Which is okay too. We all know the deal. 7 deep and 1.5 bigs ish... There's still hope.
Drank the same bad Gatorade as the team perhaps? Lack of energy allover the place last night. It's good to know we're much better than that when we wanna be. I think that's probably now 2 games where we played under our average. Self always says he expects around 5 games a year like that. Certainly this was one of them. There will be much better nights but not many worse for this group.
Bothersome to me.... I'm not upset that Newman had a subpar offensive game. It's that it seemed to get in his head maybe a lil. Several possessions of lackadaisical defense on the perimeter. Must play thru it when the shots don't fall and excel in other areas of the game.
@mayjay perhaps it isn't lying as much as leaving some info not divulged. And ya I'll be with group that believes that's annual. I'm good with that. And I don't even think it's wrong.
@HighEliteMajor agreed. Doesn't smell right.
@JayHawkFanToo definitely a few I like. Can't say I'm ripping the pocket off my jeans to get out the cc for concert Tix though. Haha 😋
I will say the last two games I went to. I sat in row 6 for one and row 11 for the other. Both sideline seats. I was probably the rowdiest fan within ear shot perhaps. But I'm a pretty rowdy individual. Much nicer than watching from the nosebleeds for sure. But I also see alot of ppl from other programs. Past players, Media figures, Etc, they generally all agree there's but one place that has the best home court advantage in the nation. Others may be close. But only one is best. There's no place like home. There's no place like Kansas.
Wait a min... You guys don't like Gordon Lightfoot? 😊
No matter the results, the next stretch of games will certainly do what Coach Self loves to see done with his teams. Toughening. I don't think any will be crazy blowouts and I'd look for Self to use the tougher opponents to strengthen team defense as well as the half court offensive sets. There will be alot of harping on toughness with rebounding, ball movement will be big, and as always defense without fouling. I think Self is excited for this next stretch. It's exactly what he wants to get this team ready to compete for a 14th straight lil10 title
