Spot on about supporting cast and how that impacts Big Dave's numbers. Big Dave had NO HELP! He carried those numbers by himself. Our perimeter play became mush as the season progressed. Our guys pretty much forgot how to drive, very little movement (on or off ball screens, etc.) Big D wasn't choreographed in much of the offense, like what you saw last night by both teams using their bigs on pick and rolls.

As I have said for more than a month... I don't know how to describe the offense we ran because it had no visible description for what is was... except BROKEN!

The fact that Dave salvaged the stats that he did is simply amazing! And this is coming from a guy who really lacks good footwork. BTW: I hope he paid attention to players like Timme... who lived by his his swivel steps in the post. Dave can learn that. Timme wasn't an incredible athlete... he just took the time and worked his butt off to develop smoothness in his moves. Give the guy credit for maximizing his potential!

Valid statement! Just not sure if it's best to be the small fish in the big pond or the big fish in the little pond. Kansas may have lost on some recruits but also landed a very lucrative shoe contract.

I think there will be questions about Duke after K is gone. I'm not fond of the man but he definitely knows how to bring greatness through the doors of Duke, using many methods.

What I don't doubt is Duke's commitment to basketball excellence. They have the money and the will to do whatever is necessary to bring in a monster coach after K retires. Just like how they got in a bidding war with us on those rules... they had no business trying to buy those because the rules just wouldn't belong there. They don't care. They have the big bucks and they have alumni in super power positions to get what they want.

As much as I dislike Duke... I'm thinking they will probably LIFT their program to new heights after K is gone. Whatever it will take... they will do.

I think I'd go with your assessment of school blue blood rankings. I would bump Kansas ahead of UK because of the Big 12 typically being stronger than the SEC in basketball. Also... Kansas has been filling the record books with streaks and will probably soon surpass UK in total wins. I think that will be made into a big deal. If Self continues on with his winning ways, it should separate us from UK. I'm skeptical about Cal keeping up and wonder if the luster is now wearing off on his sales pitch to be the best coach to get guys into the league afterwards.

@Kcmatt7

Definitely on the "leadership occurs naturally" comment.

I don't think your scorer down the stretch is necessarily your leader. I'd say your play maker is usually your leader, whether that player is the scorer or feeding the ball to the scorer. We always called our last second shooter "money" and he got to wear that tag all year.

The game seems to be different today. In the "good ol' days" your leader was typically your PG, just like in football your quarterback was your leader. So many responsibilities fell on that role. It started off the court, and the leader would often babysit the troops and helped keep them out of trouble. On the court.. the leader needed to read defenses and know how to attack them. The leader was also a play maker in creating easy finishes for other, usually by the pass. The leader was a cheerleader throughout the game. The leader gave out constant chatter. The leader kept the coach's message alive with the troops. The leader was animated and drew most all of the attention.

This is why I asked about today's players. What if a guy comes around that has all of this to offer? Would his teammates follow? I don't know. We are in such a different time today. The message is so much about equality that it may cast shade on leadership.

I'd really like someone young, say 18 or 19 comment on this with their perspective of life today. Sometimes I work with youth on projects and it feels different today. I'm not being negative on youth... just trying to figure them out!

Gonzaga • Apr 02, 2021 05:24 PM

I was blessed for the opportunity to watch Bird live many games through college and sometimes in pro. I wouldn't say he had speed, but he had quickness and deception. Definitely NOT a dud athlete! I still don't think there is anyone who knew more about how to create scoring space than Bird. And it gave him comfort on his shot that it wouldn't be blocked so he really focused on making his shots. Definitely one of the great deceptive players ever to play the game. His no-look passes were sick! Magic copied the no-look pass off of Bird and learned to be effective, too. But no one like the master!

The "Bird is not a good athlete" crowd made those comments out of envy for Bird being one of the greatest minds to play the game. I would comment, "for being such a non-athlete, he sure kicked their arses!" Play it right back to them!

Maybe some of you young bloods out there can jump into this.

Is the game changing within the players? Are the coaching ideas of the past not sinking in the same? I think we have all experienced a different energy level with youth today. I'm not speaking badly of it. Just different. Are players harder to reach by the coaches?

@BeddieKU23

Heck... I'm all in for good guards... I just hope we aren't headed for a situation where we feel desperate again and start shoving ideas ahead of reality.

This year was an experiment that went really wrong. I'm not going to get negative on any player we had. They all did what they could (given the circumstances). I don't think the leadership was there... leadership starts with coaches and works it's way down. Not sure why things were like this. Covid is a bad excuse. We played most of our games and didn't have near the problem many teams faced. Perhaps the NCAA investigation was just way too distracting for Self. I can understand that. He's still my pick to coach us!

Gonzaga • Mar 31, 2021 02:54 AM

That would be me. I remember the old days... when Larry Bird was mocked for being athletically inferior.

The point isn't to say athleticism is a negative. It's obviously a great asset. But without basketball IQ athleticism is squandered. When you have a player that marries IQ and athleticism... hello NBA!

Gonzaga • Mar 31, 2021 02:48 AM

hahaha.... my jinx worked. USC is gone.

Now for my prediction for 2021 National Championship.... Gonzaga by a landslide!

ShoeCos... where is Jaybate when we need him most?

Nike sues MSCHF over "Satan Shoes" (Lil Nas X). These were originally Nike shoes converted into Satan Shoes and reportedly has a drop of human blood in their souls. I'm pretty sure this is untrue because introducing human blood would make them a biohazard and state health authorities across America would ban their sale.

What is pathetic.. drama entertainment cases like this end up "bleeding" into college basketball. In this case, it already has. There are big time shoe artists who design many high$ shoes for pro ball now and they will be watching this case closely. These same individualized shoes will soon be working their way into a prominent role in college basketball. Expect highly touted recruits to be influenced by shoe artists and which schools they are contracted with.

Coincidence that the timing matches up with March Madness and the Final Four? Ha.... is there any doubt?

Gonzaga • Mar 30, 2021 07:24 AM

This is just my opinion... but I don't think Baylor matches up well with Gonzaga. I think if the championship game is these two teams Gonzaga wins. I see some definite flaws in the Baylor defense and feel certain Gonzaga will exploit them.

I think Gonzaga's tough game is tomorrow, with USC. USC is not nearly as polished as Gonzaga, but they are more athletic, have height and play smart ball. If USC comes with all that enthusiasm and they make some shots, I think they can take a lead and pressure Gonzaga into speeding up and losing composure. I think USC will take away a lot of those easy baskets Gonzaga gets on most teams by exploiting weak areas.

Maybe I jinx USC... haha... I'm good at that!

BTW: Kudos to Drew! We've watched him get out-coached for years. But the guy has worked hard and paid his dues. I believe he remained humble and fought to become a better coach and it worked. There is no way Baylor is this good this year without a coach who put it all together. I hope he continues to bring tough teams because the Big 12 benefits, including Kansas!

I'm excited to see that Houston - Baylor game. On paper, Baylor should win this game (and I think they will)... but hard to count out Houston. Sampson is tricky and his guys play tricky, too. I'm hoping for a wild game!

Bye Tyon • Mar 30, 2021 07:17 AM

Quentin had an attitude problem while here. He didn't hustle. Not sure why but he wasn't a fit here. I'm glad to see him reach his potential at Houston. That Houston - Baylor game should be a good one!

TGF was athletic but lacked refinement and we are not the best fit for teaching personal development to players. He wasted a year here. Hope he finds someplace where they believe in him and have someone who can help him develop. He needs everything... shot, handles, basketball IQ...

Bill Self and who he's lost to. • Mar 30, 2021 07:06 AM

First... I will state that I'm happy Bill is at Kansas. If you look at where we were when he came and everything he accomplished since arriving... I think he has performed extremely well (though I, like others, wish we captured a few more NCs). Also... he is an excellent representative for Kansas because he knows how to talk in front of the cameras and mics.

Over the years Bill has improved and grown as a coach. I think that is because he has had to adjust to shortcomings in personnel, etc.

Here is my more critical view... and I say that knowing Bill will one day retire from college basketball as one of the most-winning coaches in the game.

DEFENSE - Defense is Bill's "go to." "Self ball" is a grind game where we are led by our defense. Most of my problems with defenses at Kansas relates to players not being coached up enough on how to personally contribute to their maximum on defense. Hedging, spacing, weakside help... players lacking enough basketball IQ. Also... how can we be known as a premiere defensive team without developing a press? I find it sinful to not spend time working on an effective press. It can totally change the momentum in a game. It can change the speed of the game. It can force opposing team offenses out of their comfortable sets. It can pep up your team and get them more active. I just don't see how we can hang "defense" as our identity without being able to put on a good press.

OFFENSE - I'm not sure what we were running this year. It started as more of a motion dribble-drive but ended as a weak version of a hi-lo. Again... it mostly seems like our guys are not coached up enough with a basketball IQ that can take advantage of what the defense gives. Anytime we get hit by an aggressive defense we fold. We don't adjust. Our guys should know if a player is in his grill then force the contact and the foul. Or turn the corner on the defender and drive to the rim. At least we are finally starting to see a few guys using shot/ball/drive fakes. I remember a few years ago we would never see that.

I believe Bill has most of the Jayhawk fanbase trained to believe athleticism wins championship. I'm not against athleticism... but you hang your hat on basketball IQ. Gonzaga has dominated this year NOT with athleticism! Their players play smart. The know the finer parts of the game and they know each other. They make it look so easy! I say this full well knowing that Gonzaga could lose to USC because USC is more athletic AND plays with pretty good basketball IQ. We are always going to be facing some horrible defeats because our guys are mostly just athletes (or not) and not developed ball players and team players.

MOTIVATION - We've had these discussions in here for years. Bill is not a motivator. He is not a cheerleader. This is, by far, our biggest issue and why we get thrashed by teams that come in jacked up. How many times do we have to fight back from deficits, sometimes big deficits, with a weaker opponent but we let them play motivated at a higher level. We should be bringing DEATH to most teams from the opening jump. Kill their spirit and pile on them. Notice how USC outplayed us. They never let off the gas from beginning to end.

GAME PREPARATION - Bill told us long ago that he does not prepare a game plan against opponents we face. He runs at them with who we are, not changing for another team. So I'm not sure what we are doing in practices leading up to games. Usually time is spent dealing with player match-ups. Is that what we are doing? Are we studying their plays? Do we ever think about how do we attack each team on offense? Exploit match-ups? Exploit weaknesses in their team defense? It seems like none of that happens once games tip off. We just run our normal stuff and if that doesn't create offense, too bad. We better win it on the defensive end. I think our team this year should have been a pretty decent trey shooting team. But our offense was a disaster and guys always faced contested treys, or received the ball in a bad place so we had no shot continuity. It was painful to watch our offense when this should have been a fun team to watch.

BAD IDEAS - I still can't believe someone thought it was a good idea to make Marcus our PG. It basically killed his identity he had proven the year before. He wasn't a play maker. Period. I know Harris was green and lacked aggression. What if he was boosted up by being our starting PG from the beginning of the season? He started becoming more aggressive at the end of this year, I'm not sure how because he wasn't really given incentive. How can anyone not notice his ability to make plays, make passes? His ability to apply tough defense and create steals? Even now, we are looking for a PG to replace Marcus and keep Harris on the bench to rot. The focus should be on Harris being our PG next year and pushing him now to beef up and work hard to take on that responsibility next year. The guy will become a phenom if we develop him properly.

I'm taking full responsibility for this loss and blow out. I definitely jinxed us by angering the basketball Gods for my dishing on Cal and K.

From now and just refer to this as "drgnslayr's loss!" I'll wear it like a shame badge just like Roy did.

I think we all saw this coming • Mar 24, 2021 05:09 AM

I think there were many issues. We definitely didn't attack on offense. Early in the year, it looked like maybe this team would do it... a real motion dribble-drive offense. We ended up counting way too much on the post feed, hybrid hi-lo. Once it was apparent that this hi-lo would be our bread and butter, guys just cut back on aggression driving to the rim. It felt like we were a team that never really committed to a style. In the end, it was too much of that slump offense where we sit 4 guys on the trey line and they just stand there passing the ball quickly hoping the defense shifts off enough to get up a quick trey. That is why our trey shot percentage slumped. We had reasonable shooters and you could see that at times. But compare how we shot the trey and how USC did. Their shooters were usually wide open on the trey. We shot contested treys.

It never really felt like we were prepared for games this year. Actually, I'm surprised we won as many games as we did. I compliment the fellas for hanging in there on many games and hanging more wins!

What happened? (comedy appreciated) • Mar 24, 2021 04:58 AM

Dajuan excites me so much.

I believe he even gives Marcus another reason to come back next year.

Imagine those two bond and spend some serious time working together after March until next year... perfecting their defense. Together they will develop into the best theft team in D1 and could possibly break steals records if they work together. Just imagine them together on a double-team!

We could easily have the best defense guard tandem in the nation, by a long shot! This would also boost Marcus back to where he was last year going into a draft.

I don't know if this is being considered... but it should be.

Then slide Marcus back to the two when they are both playing and let him develop his scoring again. He should be a 2 at the next level (wherever he plays ball). He can also fill in at point when Dajuan needs a breather.

We could really become a stinky good team next year!

I still think the Zags are the team to beat but haven't watched them play for a while. They were polished so well early in the year, ahead of the rest of D1. Not sure with this year. If he doesn't test out well for the NBA I'm not so sure it would be in his best interest to try to go abroad now because of Covid. Not sure what that is doing to the offers players receive. Think I would put him at 50/50 for now. Also may depend a bit how we do in March, though I'm not so sure
.

@KirkIsMyHinrich

Soccer, boxing, dance lessons... anything to help him connect his mind to his feet.

Dave is Dave... he has a particular skill set and has improved his game considerably since becoming a Jayhawk. He still has some key flaws... mostly... his lateral motion needs vast improvement (footwork). But he never came in here and claimed to be the next Doke. The struggle we have with Dave is he followed right behind a legendary player at his position. I can think of plenty of past Jayhawk teams where we would show a lot more thanks to a guy like Dave if we had him then.

I am very glad we have Dave!

A big part of Dave's success relies on our offense being able to get him the ball in the right place at the right time. I think Self is figuring out that another key to maximizing what we get out of Dave is to be selective on his PT. Dave gets plenty of rest and stays fresh... we don't have to count on him staying out of foul trouble... and we make our opponents adjust several times in a game from guarding the perimeter all out on what is essentially a 5-guard offense, back to a 4-1 odd description of a "hi-lo."

By the way... I cut my cable, so I won't be catching a lot more of Jayhawk basketball. I'll miss games... but I think I can pretty much get a feel for teams just by seeing a little and reading.

Our guys are yet to prove to me they can attack a sticky defense. Until then... I feel like our chances are low for defeating teams that come prepared with aggressive defense. We are easily disrupted out of our flow. We need to be able to counter defenses that attack us hard on the perimeter. That means back cuts to the rim (the old alleyoops), carefully applied back screens, set high ball screens run with isos, so many ways to attack aggressive defenses. We can always get our offense on wheels off of rebounds and quick inbounds passing and attack open court or at least quick attacks before defenses get set. What has bothered me this year is our inability to adjust to what teams throw at us. We have plenty of talent but it gets lost in our inability to take what we are given. So few D1 defenses can handle being attacked for their aggression. They usually collapse in their weakside help.

Self is a pretty damn good play strategist and I'm surprised we don't run more structured plays when we get thwarted by sticky defenses. We should be running those backdoor alleyoops and they are available with the right back screens or just faking off cuts.

I'm thinking Covid is restricting practice because this team should be capable of learning a lot more than we are seeing.

Living in the ~~After~~ **Never** glow • Feb 04, 2021 12:37 AM

We only have up to 8 conference games left. I think we've past the time of big changes, especially when we show better signs of play, like against the kitties. I'm not saying Self won't strategize differently during games. When we look bad, he'll try different things to adjust the flow (or lack of it).

As the season comes to a close I'll be looking for clues that may tell us what Self is thinking about for next year.

Living in the ~~After~~ **Never** glow • Feb 03, 2021 10:01 PM

Let's get real... if we can't score efficiently from the outside with a 4-1 we sure as hell won't do it with a 5-guard offense. And you are talking to Mr. X-axis!

We need Dave badly. He just hasn't become Doke 2. How many of our past bigs could fill those shoes? Right...

I'm impressed with the improvements we have seen out of Dave. He can't help it if he doesn't have the footwork of Doke, or JoJo. Dave is Dave... and he's a guy who has a great attitude and a Jayhawk heart!

As usual, my advice to Dave is to start taking dance lessons. It might help his brain talk to his feet.

This season may not be a memorable one... but at least we smoke Bruce again!
