@JayHawkFanToo

And Travis kind of has Self's number lately, in terms of being able to play Self tough.

@Crimsonorblue22

No, supposedly Self was being interviewed by some media.

I was in a noisy crowd when I was speaking to this acquaintance and I could possibly have misunderstood him, but that's what I believe he told me.

@REHawk

Seriously, Coach...

There were just too many distractions for Tar in Memphis.

@HighEliteMajor

Well, I guess I have one more thing to add.

A friend of mine in Lawrence told me tonight that he heard Self interviewed (didn't say where) recently and Self said that a few weeks ago he assessed the team and the season and decided that none of what they were doing was working. Self supposedly said he decided to junk everything they had been working on and go clean sheet of paper. Self also supposedly said that the last few weeks we actually have no idea who we are or what we are doing. We are just trying stuff, whatever we can think of.

I think they are making some progress. :-)

It appears to me that tactics are becoming strategy.

And that's the Marine Corp way.

Players like Tarick Black maybe just can't play well with distractions.

End of story.

I totally agree with you, but when the rules change, and everyone starts embracing them, then its a new game.

Regarding Brannen, he is such a great shooter he really doesn't have to worry about any of the guys that might join the team. I really don't think anyone can shoot him off the floor. He is too tall and too good of a shot. If he just gets a leeeeeeetle more consistent on the defensive end, which he almost certainly will by next season, he may not get 35mpg, but he will get 20mpg and all the 3ptas he wants.

There is no limit to this endorsement stuff!!!!!!

We can out market UK!

By gosh, Forrest Claire Allen had the hues to promote the building of KU Memorial Stadium way back 1920.

And KU built 16k seat Allen Field House in 1955-56 for the 1957 season when most colleges were playing in 3-6k seat arenas.

If there is no putting brakes on what is happening to college basketball, then let's mount some Saturn V's to KU and get going!

!3toonKU.jpg ↗

P.S.: I haven't ridden in one of these Manitou pontoons yet, but they seem like a very good innovation. And I'm not connected with them in any way. Just really, really like the idea of a fast, good handling pontoon boat for partying and skiing. Fiberglass deck boats have been taken about as far as they can go and scratched, chipped fiberglass v-hull keels and cracking gel coats top side could use a rest.

I never heard John Wooden say, "Nope, I wouldn't want that much talent." He had at least two teams with Walton and Sven Nater in which the second string was literally the second best team in the country behind the UCLAN starting five.

I have never heard Cal say, "Nope, I wouldn't want another OAD." He has 10 OAD/TADs and he never stops recruiting that I can see.

I have never heard Coach K say, "Nope, I have 9 OAD/TADs, I don't want any more."

Coaches will sign up to 13 OAD/TADs.

Coaches will accept walk-on OAD/TADs on top of the 13 scholarship OAD/TADs.

Demand for OAD/TAD talent is as inelastic as OPM is for an investment banker.

@KansasComet

Let's look at this from shameless PR talking points.

When KU gets an OAD/TAD type, we say: Bill Self signed a player.

When KU does not sign a player, we say: adidas failed to attract the player to KU.

:-)

In the recent feed of Carlton Bragg supplied by Dr. X. Y. Dragonslayr, Ph.d., Forrest Claire Allen Chair, Institute for Advanced Basketball Research, Virtual Lawrence, Kansas, I was so excited about Bragg's length and athleticism and Under Armour Petrotennies, that I completely overlooked Bragg's ultra heavyweight long johns he wore under his uniform. I believe these long johns could be a new look in college and pro basketball and could spur an enormous apparel submarket: basketball long johns.

Does anyone know if adidas designers are hard at work on some custom long johns that Carlton could wear and later endorse in the L? :-)

P.S.: Hey, long johns, lemme see here, um, how about KU approaches Cabela's!!!!!!! Now they know long johns. And cammies, too!

P.P.S: We could even connect Cabela's up with Kief Morris and he could endorse Daisy BeeBee guns!

P.P.P.S: This dog will hunt.

P.P.P.P.: Chancellor Bernie, maybe we could develop this pup into the Institute for Advanced Endorsement Research!

@jayballer54

But, but, but...

Isn't that what "they" said about Wigs, Embiid and Bragg?

:-)

Landing a Nike lean appears the toughest, though KU adidas-ed Wigs.

Note: I am turning adidas into a verb that describes the raiding of players from other shoeco/agent conveyor belts. I will conjugate it for everyone.

I adidas-ed Bragg from UA.
You adidas-ed Wigs from Nike.
He/she/it adidas-ed Xavier from Nike.
We adidased Zimmerman from Nike.
They adidas-ed Newman from whomever.

After the adidas-UK signing of Bragg in UA treads, I am particularly psyched about raiding UA talent, even though Pitino might expect it to be a smaller pool of talent than Nike.

Stellar find!

Did it mention FG % or have a box score?

Maybe ku athletics has the box score.

It would be interesting to see how much it reduced FG% vs season FG% at 10 feet.

Up front, I cannot say to what extent Tubby’s Ball Line defense differs in effect of movement from Self Defense, but I am going to be studying it closely tomorrow to see if I can diagnose the distinctions. KU is, after all, the virtual setting of the jaybate 1.0 Institute for Advanced Basketball Research. :-)

Ball Line defense is a simple strategy to articulate—it requires all defenders to stay between, or at least hedge toward, the line of the ball and the baseline. Like most basket ball strategies it also has a set of deceptively simple rules.

  1. Apply constant ball pressure.

  2. Contest every shot.

  3. Retreat quickly to the ball line.

  4. Do not allow penetrating passes or dribble penetration.

  5. Allow non-penetrating passes, ones that do not move the ball closer to the basket.

  6. Always see the ball and your man.

  7. Attempt to intercept all lobs and bounce passes.

  8. Jump to the ball on every pass.

  9. Communicate (talk -- use verbals)

  10. Make all players DOC (dead on the catch).

Don't ask me what dead on the catch means. It sounds like you're up in their jock from the moment they get the ball.

In any case, like most basketball strategies, it gets complicated diagramming the spatial movements and implications of it. Here is an excellent resource for basketball schemes generally and for the ball-line in particular.

http://coachpreheim.blogspot.com/2012/12/ball-line-defense.html ↗

To quote Coach Preheim, Tubby's Ball Line “…is ideal for teams who want to plug up driving lanes, while also being in great position to rebound."

The following link is a PDF link from Preheim's site that presents an extensive set of diagrams about how to play Ball Line Defense under various scenarios of offensive action.

https://app.box.com/s/1barhumqqskutctua1bs ↗

Now, don’t be disturbed if you have trouble making sense of the diagrams. I found them hard to follow myself in terms of gleaning from them the principles that distinguish this sort of defense from conventional, Dick Harp descended, pressure M2M. This is not unusual when looking at diagrams the first time. The key is to glance at them and then WATCH the game to see what Tubby has TTech doing on defense. Compare and contrast what KU does.

Until then, let’s do a little history of Tubby in relation to his Ball-Line Defense.

Tubby played for J.D. Barnett at High Point University and learned a conception of pressure and help defense called ball-line defense from Barnett, who seems to have elaborated Ball-line defense into a system.

So far, to yours truly, the pre-Barnett origins of Ball-LIne Defense are unclear, but there is apparently no connection to Walter “Doc” Meanwell’s 1911 to 1929 “line defense”—a precursor to zone defense—used to win 8 championships at UW-Madison. Meanwell’s line defense was essentially like today’s 3-2 zone and was created to stop the early fast breaking offenses of the day by the defense hustling back and setting up two lines of defense--3 forwards out front, 2 guards in back. The picket line of three forwards harassed but let the fast breaking guards pass, yet channeled them to the defensive guards, who then picked them up m2m, while the front picket line then picked up the secondary, or trailing breakers m2m. But I digress. Back to the Tubbster.

Tubby got his first assistant job in college with his college coach, J.D. Barnett, who by then was at Virginia Common Wealth. They presumably developed the Ball-Line defense further.

Tubby took the ball line defense to George Felton’s staff at the South Carolina Gamecocks.

But it was as Rick Pitino’s assistant at the great UK rebuild under probation--post Eddie Sutton that Tubbie’s Ball Line defense rules got fused with Pitino’s full court pressure defense (to some degree anyway) and helped produce Pitino’s turn around of UK with only 8 scholarship players, none taller than 6-7, and despite a horrendous pasting by KU, made it to .500 the first season, then 22-6 the next season, again while still on probation.

Tubby parlayed his Ball Line Defense into his first head coaching job at Tulsa, replacing, drum roll please, the apparent father of the Ball-Line, J.D. Barnett.

Upsetting several majors while at Tulsa got Tubby the UK job, when Pitino moved to the pros. The Ball Line was good for a ring and then a decade run of .76, which was not good enough for UK.

Now a Tubby tangent: Tubby’s Ball Line and recruiting and lack of fast breaking and 10 loss seasons lead to the nickname of Ten Loss Tubby. Some thought Tubby was unloved at UK because of pigmentation. But that is a given obstacle facing any African American coach anywhere it seems. So: since pigmentation did not prevent his hiring by UK, and given prejudice is always a card in the deck, down, or up, it really seems it was probably Tubby’s failure to return to the Final Four, Tubby’s average recruiting, and Tubby’s love of defense and half court offense at the citadel of the fast break that may have undone Tubby at UK, as much, or more than issues of pigmentation. Note that a similar combination of factors underlain the undoing of Eddie Sutton and Billy Gillispie at UK, also. Tubby fought pigmentation. Eddie fought the bottle. Billy fought anger and lack of diplomacy. Each man had his own cross to bear, but it was the triad of moderate recruiting/love of defense/lack of running that probably actually undid them all at UK. Put another way, each man had some quality that made UK fans not love each of them, each man labored under his own triadic cross of defense, no running and moderate recruiting, and each man had a triggering event that made their careers no longer tenable. Of the three, Tubby’s situation was the most egregiously unfair and stupid, because pigmentation has been found at the jaybate 1.0 Institute for Advanced Basketball Thinking not to have much correlation with anything but prejudice and hops, and the Institute’s respected fellow, Dr. X. Y. Dragonslayr, has shown that most of basketball occurs on the X-Axis from between 0 and 76 inches on the Y-axis has pretty much made a convincing case that prejudice aka eye testing, has no place in the greatest game ever invented. But I digress.

So: at the end of all this, let’s get ready for a defensive rumble in Lubbock.

Self Defense seeing what it can do against the Red Raiders.

Tubby Ball Line Defense seeing what it can do against Bill’s emerging combination of trey balling and mobile big man attack platforms.

Why this could be such an interesting challenge for KU, regardless of the asymmetries in talent—KU having 3 OAD/TADs and Tubby having none as far as I can recall—is that Tubby’s Ball Line Defense is specifically geared to take away the driving lanes the Self’s MBMAPs exploited so much against Baylor’s match-up zone.

The question becomes then: will Self and KU resort to passing 45 degrees away from the basket, with the Ball Line is predicated on not challenging, for the open look trey, if the passing and driving lanes are deliberately clogged effectively by the Ball Line?

In other words, will Self simply take what Tubby gives him—the trey, or will Self look at TTech’s low standing height and simply move his MBMAPs down on the low blocks and force it inside against a defense specifically designed to stop that action?

Self likes take what they give us; that will be the trey.

But this may also be one of the few chances where KU’s bigs can play some B2B with a prayer of shooting a high percentage in the short trey game.

Going to be a very interesting head game between two coaches that measure the length of their manhoods in terms of defense.

Rock Chalk.

@KUSTEVE

Oh, yeah, total recall.

And was there some place called Quantrill's Saloon some where up near the old Eldridge Hotel?

@JhawkAlum

You know, this whole simplification thing makes sense, but...

Self seems to be going the exact opposite direction everyone else is going.

While everyone else seems to be going back to Dick and Jane Primer playbooks, you know, "See Dick ball screen, see Jane dribble drive, see Jane dunk." Self seems to be taking the current team into off the charts variety of sets and menu options.

The team plays different ways almost every game.

Its kind of insane, but he is 12-2.

If he keeps having success at this, I think he may actually complexify things even more.

So far, Self has really kept defense pretty rudimentary and has forced the guys focus onto all the offensive variations.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he follows K.I.S.S. until the first really tough conference team and goes all emergent complexity on defense then.

This team has the athleticism to do more provocative things on defense than it is doing now.

It feels to me like Self is saving the defensive wrinkles for later in the season, so long as the team keeps eeking out Ws without showing his down cards on the defensive end.

The underlying premise of everything he seems to be doing, however, is scheme and play in ways tailored for each opponent to encourage it to beat itself sometime in the second half. It seems to be the Phog Philosophy dusted off.

Sheesh! That coach of yours was a motivational genius.

Think how much more productive American business and American schools could be if they approached it positively in this small increment than with all the draconian coercion of employees and students.

Managers don't make people better.

People make themselves better, when they think improvement is within their reach.

Management points out what the degree of improvement needed is and says we're all going to make this incremental improvement.

Holy cow!

This is so American its beautiful!

Thanks for sharing.

P.S.: Did you notice how all Self had to do was say he would like the team to have a better defensive field goal percentage and they went out and did it for him...to the tune of 34%?

He may have intimidated them at practice, but I kind of doubt it. Self just remembered the cardinal rule of leading , teaching and managing. When all else fails, especially coaching'em up, try asking clearly and calmly for what you are not getting.

"If you tell people where to go, but not how to get there, you'll be amazed at the results."--George S. Patton

Bragg-ing Rights, Etc. • Jan 09, 2015 01:21 AM

KU now has Bragg-ing rights it seems.

Carlton Bragg = MBMAP

Yessssss.

~Carlton seems an Important mobile big man attack platform for next season's team.

~Important ice breaker for recruiting come spring. Guys then will feel secure with an anchor player.

~JNew has an interesting pre-signing story saying KU might get some good news about Bragg today. The story was posted 2:47AM middle of last night. Sounds like JNew got some scoop. It includes a lengthy Q&A analysis of Bragg by Eric Bossi. Bossi notes Bragg has face up game, but that it gets in the way of his aggressiveness if he goes to it before he establishes and inside presence in a game. Boss says this is an issue with lots of young bigs that can play FU and B2B. What I like about Bragg is that, though only 6-8 (already shrunken from his earlier 6-9) and very skinny (pre-Hudy), he could plug and play as an MBMAP playing a lot of FU attack his OAD season and Hudyize and play both FU and B2B his TAD season.

~slayr's feed of Bragg plays shows fluidity for a big, some decent passes, and some touch, but the usual weak defensive footwork. But at least someone has him working on steering guys to center lane for help, which is Self Defense, rather than channelling them baseline. That will help for next season.

~So, all Bragg really needs is some serious weight work on those sticks for legs with Hudy to be a able to mix it up, as an MBMAP and signing early might allow him to get started on that work early and so be street legal when he hits Lawrence. Maybe?

~I would really like to see The Big Red Dog and Fort Bragg play some together. We could call it the pipe cleaner leg hi-low on the steep learning curve= nights, but I suspect Bragg will get beyond those by end of next season, as is usual for high ranking big man recruits.

~When I first heard of Bragg, I sort of recall him being called 6-9. JNew and Bossi called him 6-8. I wonder if he will grow back to 6-9 next summer? :-)

~All in all a huge get.

~Another thought about slayr's keen eyed ID of UA soles on Bragg in the feed at the 3 minute mark. Liked how that was inserted at the three minute mark by video maker to make it easy to refer to in blogging! :-) Also, those shoes and the shot of them might be interpreted hypothetically several different ways:

a.) PetroShoeCo brands mean nothing and Rick Pitino suffers from PetroShoeCo brand recruiting asymmetry delusions; or

b.) PetroShoeCo brands are cannabalizing player supply on each other's conveyor belts; or

c.) Certain PetroShoeCos may be deciding to ally and possibly merge downstream to become more viable; or

d.) Certain schools may be preparing to change brands, or

e.) certain schools may be preparing to add brands to their endorsement contract relationships and so become teams that can attract players from more than one brand.

There really is no law that says a university can only sign with one PetroShoeCo brand, is there? Or maybe there is but maybe there won't be such a clause in a renegotiated contract. I can see where it might create some critical mass for lesser brands in an oligopoly to cooperate in marketing.

Dang, regimes may be shifting...again?

It should either accept you, or ask you to register with Longlines and then ask you to provide that registration information (some Longlines user ID and password related to ESPN access, if I recall correctly) . You go to Longlines web site either directly by a link on the page, or by surfing to Longlines site and getting yourself registered with Longlines. You may want to call Longlines to have them walk you through it really quickly. I had to do this once several years back with another provider and I have forgotten the details now.
