So fast tempo, got it. KU's tempo is faster than Auburn, Duke, and Tennessee's and not much slower than ISU's and none of those teams are top 100 in tempo. There's only 1 team in Kenpom's top 5 that has a top 100 tempo. Looks like other good teams, including pretty much all of the title contenders, prefer playing at a slower tempo as well.

Maybe KU isn't playing nearly as slow as you think they are.

Heck no, not all tempo - also ppg and how offensively efficient you are. Teams you listed below….

Auburn ppg - 87.9 -#1 O on kenpom

Duke - 80 #6

Tenn - 77.3 #35

Isu - 86.3 #7

Ku- 78.9 #30

Their guards are all crazy athletic and force a ton of turnovers (I feel like most in conference but don’t care to look it up).

Juan, Zeke and Kj will all have 3+ a piece

Now imagine a 4 man who’s athletic and can stretch the floor

@BShark Offense looked the best when Juan wasn’t on the floor. Sloppy with the ball and doesn’t even command the other team guards him

Good news - we won

Bad news - other team didn’t guard kj and we labored to score yet again. Bad spacing, wrong guys taking the wrong shots, turnovers and no driving lanes

Against a good team we’d get handled by 15-20 which is what I expect isu to do Wednesday. If Cincy could have thrown it in the ocean they’d won

The whole “we play bad but make them play worse” I’m not a fan of. How about we figure out the way to play our best ball versus worry about the other team making us play poorly.

Good road win that we will take but Wednesday we will see if we are turning a corner or just another sweet 16 team with no title chance

@BeddieKU23 Talent’s been this for 2 years now. Juan and KJ do not work offensively together with Hunter - it’s been proven it doesn’t work but we keep running it back like last year was an anomaly

His actions are he hasn’t done it though and played Juan a ton of minutes going on 3 years now and his excuse is he doesn’t trust guys behind Juan (that plus his lack of recruiting). He very much views Juan as irreplaceable and no one can do half the job he can even in spot minutes….

Sec is a gauntlet but all those teams would score on us so easily and do enough to limit us offensively that I think we’d lose by 15-20 and the game in the sweet 16 not be particularly close

Some guys practice how they play and others are gamers - when the lights come on they perform well but in practice it doesn’t mean as much and they don’t

I think of the 2012 Trob/Tyshawn team with Teahan as over performing. That roster though had three guys that made nba rosters (not bmac as he didn’t play)

I’m struggling to see besides Flory who needs way more minutes - who on this squad is nba talent because you 100% need it to win it all

If that’s the case that was another poor roster decision based on Elmarko’s performance freshman year. I’m surprised freshman vs upper classman he went frosh

Self didn’t have the choice though because LJ knew he wouldn’t even get “some” minutes at pg here - Bill wasn’t going to do it and the current pg played 36-38 minutes a game and 1-3 minutes isn’t “some pg”.

If you watched Houston be played pg every time Shead (his buddy) was out. Shead played 31-32 mpg (average) while Juan was 34-35 mpg average (only because blowouts he sat). When Juan didn’t play pg it was only 1-2 minutes because in Self’s mind he didn’t have anyone that could even really spot him minutes. Remember the “I’d like to get Juan some rest but I can’t”. Well LJ or not that wouldn’t have convinced him to let him play some minutes at pg

@BShark Uconn rolled that tourney there isn’t any way in my you can see how that played out and look back and think we had a chance even if Self was on the sideline

He’s been on the sideline for bigger blowout loses versus worse teams (usc and zags) for me to act like we had a chance against uconn that year

The current best nba prospect on our roster doesn’t start and plays 13 minutes a game. You’d say well he fouls or oh he’s a freshman but has he fouled out of any meaningful games yet?

That guy with just the eye test but let alone the tape AND analytics (the tri fecta) say he should be our starting 4 but yet HE’S not. Why?????(please answer)

Now take 2 guys that are upper classmen and are trying to make the league. They aren’t freshmen and wherever they transfer too they need big minutes and can’t afford to sit behind a guy they are both better than per the nba scouts and only play 13-20 mpg. They “can compete for their spot at the 4” but it isn’t guaranteed to the new guys. They can see the roster, see the comments about said current starter and read the room. No way you’d risk your final year or two playing behind a guy that the current coach gushes over and loves (and promises 4 man spot too and no more 5 man) versus another flagship school that will give you 30-35 mpg starting

I’d like to see I can’t rebound Kj at the 5 like we ran back in 2023. Run Shak, Moore, Rylan, Aj or Juan and Kj at the 5. Bill raves about him being draymond green like yet has NEVER put him back at the 5 season that season. Hence the promise he’d made and to let kj play the 4. His loyalty is something else I mean being Bill’s favorite guy has gotta he some sorta feelin! 😍

We have two hardens guys that can put up numbers but constantly lose (aj and more importantly Hunter who’s never won anywhere he’s played and we know why)

We looked great at ucf but ucf guarded us like the water boy did the scout. Good bounce back win but do you want me to rant and rave over beating ucf on the road? We are Kansas….if that’s what this program has come too yikes

If we go beat houston or isu on the road - that will have my attention and show we might be a squad to compete for a title

He wanted minutes at the pg and Juan playing 38 a game wouldn’t work. Oh but Self could let him slide to the 1 some…yeah right that’s diggy and moore not Mayo who’s game Cryer’s is similar too.

Kansas is his dream school but we pass cause I’m sure in Bill’s mind he couldn’t handle it well enough to be a pg and he didn’t defend real well (granted the guys we had defended so well - sarcasm).

Ultimately went to Houston to play with his friend and was a lot more successful than he’d been here

Also - Philon wanted minutes and my post was if we’d offered him starter minutes at pg or at the 2 (somehow elmarko’s stellar play had him locked in there - again staff sucks at evaluating talent even with a full year of tape) we’d had a way better chance against momma’s home cookin

@approxinfinity They went 14-4 won the big 12 regular season and won the big 12 tourney and started peaking at the right time…..this team doesn’t have that

Definitely some bumps in the road but there was a distinct change in March that took place

If you think that same distinct change will happen this year let me know the current injured player who’s going to become our leading scorer in our first 3 ncaa tournament games

NCAA rd of 64- 15 points leading scorer

Rd 32 - 20 leading scoring

Sweet 16 - 23 leading scorer

Championship - 14 2nd leading scorer behind Wilson and Big Dave with 15

@Jhawk69 Yes, Bill loves kj and thinks he impacts games as much as ochai.

After the 2023 season, with kj tired of playing the 5 and playing dudes bigger than him he was pumped to have Hunter commit.

We had chances at Nelson and Ingram to bring in but neither were promised to play over kj. Bill had already decided that’s his guy and who he wanted. Ingram’s Uncle is the source and Nelson source is a good friend who played baseball at Bama. He’s tight with two bama assistants (basketball team) and attends a closed practice or two early on every year plus a few home games.

Also easy to follow from 247, discord, guys like farmer or bshark here but they are fed the staff KU perspective so you gotta keep that in mind. 2 sides to every story.

Same with Philon who had we given him the pg spot would have thought more heavily about it but playing backup pg minutes and not even a real shot at the 2 spot just helped start the discussions of getting outta southern missourah and back home. Home cooking is the best so I can’t blame him but more PT 100% would have made him really think about it. He loved KU…. A legit nba pg prospect but we can’t ever not start Juan at pg as long as he is here (Bill’s infallible)!

Nelson would have been a freak but he ain’t a 5 and we had Hunter so he’d been a 4 and wasn’t guaranteed a starting spot because we had someone there Bill already liked.

Turning away those two in favor of kj was typical Bill roster construction valuing guys that aren’t the best players.

Graham Ike, Nelson, Walter Clayton, Harrison Ingram…..lots of guys who had interest in us but PT writing was on the wall on Self’s loyalty. This is known in aau circles as well - nothing earth shattering here
