Diary of the comeback • Feb 15, 2017 10:49 PM

@wissox I think except in Connecticut and now Kansas (perhaps), football is usually bigger to the majority of state residents. Look at football vs bb tv ratings. College basketball is big to alums, but to non-alums, they hardly ever watch. Ratings for football are huge comparatively.

Here in SC, there are zillions of football fanatics who have never seen the SC campus. The stadium is chock full even when they suck. They are bb fans only casually, and only while the team is good. I bet LSU is important to average Louisianans the same way.

Did You See? • Feb 15, 2017 10:42 PM

Poor delusional guy.

Gets to college and thinks he can change things.

Remember being that naive?

The crazy KSU fanbase will only stop the chant if the refs get authorized to call technical fouls on the audience. And even then, maybe not.

Very nice commentary • Feb 15, 2017 10:14 PM

@REHawk Unfortunately, Bragg's last effective forearm shiver got called as illegal contact. The refs (read "cops") had to go to the monitor and then they reversed it. But he has played very much as if he wants no more body banging.

Perhaps his go-to pain "medicine" is no longer available.

And we think Fran is so bad!

Incidentally, when I was at Michigan, the in-state UM students thought it was hilarious to put down kids at other colleges in the state by saying they couldn't get in to UM. Caused many a ruckus. I recall some similar sentiments at KU about KSU and WSU, but less applicable because KU admits far greater range of students.

2018 Roster • Feb 15, 2017 02:37 AM

@HighEliteMajor The real key, I believe, is if you get a signing bonus, which usually depends on being drafted in the second round (1st rd contracts are guaranteed). The small salary is a pittance comparatively. But too many guys blow the signing bonus and end up not making a roster, ending up in D League. Undrafted with no bonus--you are basically trying to win a talent lottery that few will.

Greatest comeback of all time • Feb 14, 2017 07:12 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I don't see any lens that makes this a comment about fans. Whether he has made snide comments before doesn't make this one snide, unless you are reading something bad into his attribution of the win to Self's preparation.

Interestingly, a lot of Board Rats have called KU fans arrogant or spoiled (arrogance follows winning, spoiled follows losing). And, over the three years I have been reading this Board, I have lost track of the number of arrogant comments I have seen, almost all of which involve beginning with "We are Kansas, therefore....

....if a recruit doesn't want to come here we shouldn't want him anyway." (The most said.)

....our fans don't rush the court." (Second most.)

....our fans don't leave early." (Just last week!)

....if these players can't do better than that, they should just leave."

....we should not have to accept losing on the first weekend."

.....we should not have to accept having only 3 (or 5) NCs."

....we should demand that the committee give us a better bracket." (One of my favorites.)

These are all comments that would give anyone who sees them a firm sense of a fan base that feels entitled. That, and the complete assininity of most threads on the KUSports site.

We have a much broader range of opinions and more comprehensive discussions than those comments, of course, so don't think I am putting people here down. But just remember that all the reasonable discussion in the world can be undermined by one world-class dumb comment. (Just as with Fran's rating of PGs last year!)

Everyone's favorite Aunt Fran had a "compliment" for KU after the game.

@KUHoops comeback wouldn't have happened without Bill Self's preparation & confidence in his team. It's a good arrogance earned w/practice.

Arrogance?!? What a lovely human being...

I looked up lots of sites where people were trying to express their ideas about confidence vs arrogance. I liked this one especially:

Arrogance = I’m superior to you
Confidence = I believe in my capability

I think Fran used the phrase "good arrogance" and said it has been "earned" to express how Bill Self is so confident he exudes "We are superior to them" (arrogance) to provide his team with the level of belief they need to overcome a ridiculously adverse situation. The same thing Self did when he expressed total confidence against Memphis. Fran was not talking about the fans in any way.

You would have to ignore the words "earned" and "good" to make it into a slam of Self.

@drgnslayr This is a great pic - but - "they" probably would have called two fouls on Frank here. One for the right forearm shiver and one for the left foot stomping on the plane.

He also appears to have sat on a large gorilla, whose fingers are on top of the building and appear to be all that is left of him. Poor Kong. Last thing he heard was, "BIFM!"

He did, but in the context of them getting only 29 FTs compared to our over 40 even tho we were fouling on purpose. Said it was even bigger disparity b/c of that. No reason to mention disparity if he just thought they fouled us too much.

Ultimately, 5.4 secs is a difficult time for refs to call much of anything. I think they made the right call under the circumstances. I’d like to think the same way if the shoe were on the other foot.

Thank you for your nice posts, taking our observations the right way with humor.

The part quoted above made me remember way back to a Ted Owens game in the early 70s, I think it was in an NCAA subregional game or perhaps Big 8 post season tournament (they actually also had a Big 8 preseason tourney back then--after Christmas). Anyway, I believe it was a big game.

With just a couple of seconds left, and KU down by two, I think, the other team was inbounding the ball and KU had no reasonable prospect to recover the ball and score in the time left. Ted had one of his players set a hidden pick on the guy who was breaking free to get the inbounds pass. It worked to perfection, the guy totally whomped the KU player, and there should have been a foul called with no time gone. Unfortunately they called the foul on KU because the refs did not see him standing motionless--like everyone else, they thought he had moved into the guy.

Ted blamed himself for not warning the refs ahead of time so they could anticipate the collision.

Anyone else remember that one?

At least this is how I remember it some 40 to 45 years later. And I no doubt had a few beers when listening to it in my dorm room! So some of the details might be "alternative facts"--but they are not made up!

@Fightsongwriter It isn't theory. I've seen all the videos and watched it in slo-mo. Again, did LL get whistled for a moving screen?

So, OJ didn't do it because the criminal trial jury said he didn't. OK, gotcha.

But a year later the civil trial jury said he did do it.

So, I am guessing by your reasoning, that something doesn't happen unless it is officially ruled to happen, that therefore he didn't do it (although we all know he did it) right up until he did do it some two or so years after he really did it.

You are probably a "No sound unless someone hears the tree falling" guy. I am a "The tree fell making sound whether someone hears it or not" guy. Here, substitute "Tech player getting flattened" for "tree"!

All fun, no malice--except to OJ!

5:59 mark, ESPN dropped foul count of KU which showed a disparity.

Perfect example of looking hard to confirm your belief that poor little KU is treated unfairly, rather than looking for a possible reason for the "fact" you are describing.

They dropped the foul count on the KU side because TT went into Bonus+ after KUs fouls got to 10.

@wrwlumpy Careful, that upsets the whole narrative of Fran being biased against KU because his son walked on at OU. Funny way to show a bias....:smirk:

Devonte has more 3 pointers than Frank.

3 more made but 42 more attempts. Unless we rebounded and scored on a highly disproportionate number of those extra 39 misses, that ratio indicates likely changes of possessions and scoring by the other teams far beyond the extra 9 pts his 3-ptr attempts have gained us.

What I don't like is how most of our 3 pt shooters don't move in for rebounds on their misses.

Mason • Feb 10, 2017 10:51 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Am I the only person who just now finally got the symbolism of Marcus Smart flippin' (on) the bird at KU?

I think it is more than pressure. Practicing FTs often is in the midst of "dead time", before or after shoot arounds, sometimes on their own after practice. Game situations involve having to stop heart-thumping action and attempt to calm down, focus, and draw on muscle memory in a comparatively motionless situation.

I would have them run up and down the court (separately), and then shoot 2 within 10 seconds. Anyone not making both gets to do it again. And so forth.
