@Hawk8086 Yeah, so far as we know Izzo only provided cover for several criminals.

Dear Blue Devils Insiders:

I want to know the details on water bottles, how often the floor is mopped, the volume of air in each player's lungs, and how much ink K and the assistants use from the beginning to the end of practice.

Fawningly yours,

Slobbering Fanbase

@jayballer73 Do you have to avoid microwaves, or is that a relic from past pacemaker technology?

Question: What do YOU want KU to do? • Oct 19, 2018 08:33 PM

@cragarhawk I think we should be looking at this from a different perspective. One taught by the President over the past 3 years: there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Maybe we will get more and better recruits from this whole thing. The top ones will convince themselves they will cash in at KU, and they will see the total lack of promises or even mentions of money as the staff just being coy. So, they fool themselves (and they could never admit that) and we stay clean while getting top players.

@tis4tim Get sponsored by Dr Scholl's!

@DanR And the cost of KU's investigation.

@kjayhawks Steve Miller Band?

@kjayhawks Once, when we were discussing some scandal, a commodity lawyer once told me he had great faith in my integrity and fairness. Then he said that he was sure of it because I wasn't important enough to bribe!

Incidentally, I had a close friend awhile back who worked in the 70s and 80s for a company that did lots of lighting and audio installations in the famous NYC clubs. He said they had a local brothel and high-end call girls pretty much on retainer and they would help convince financiers and club operators to choose his company.

It ain't just basketball.

@JayHawkFanToo If true, I am guessing the major NCAA violation called "failure to exercise institutional control" is essentially the failure to have enough obscuring layers in place to support schools' Sgt Schultz act?

So, most schools have probably had boosters or friends of the program help recruits get laid. But Louisville had a BB staffer do it with hookers brought to their residence some 20 times. No layer at all, or the thinnest possible one, shielding Pitino. Should have used Uber or a cab, given the driver a grand or two, and had them taken to a local 'restaurant' for the innocent dinner planned for them to interact with the local Pole community--er, pole community.

Here is a question that has been intriguing me for awhile, but which I have never seen addressed:

Will adidas be sanctioned by the Frankfurt stock market (traded there, acc to Wikipedia) or Euro regulators if its agents are found in these cases to have engaged in widespread criminal activity on behalf of the company? We know the Euros are willing to impose huge fines on American companies (MSoft, Google, Facebook) that have done bad things in Europe. Will they punish one of their own for violations in America? Does the failure of the stock price to be very affected by the indictments play a role?

The Disappointment. • Oct 19, 2018 01:30 AM

@BigBad I read that article years ago. Funny how he decides Townsend was dirty because he was hired at places after other people were accused, or because he actually had "contact" (no! say it ain't so!) with someone who did something. I looked in vain for anything about what Townsend is suspected of doing. Recruited 5 kids who followed him. BFD.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 11:09 PM

@kjayhawks So, you will be hosting us on your yacht for a big Buckets party in April?

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 09:31 PM

@HighEliteMajor Maybe it isn't totally prevalent. But rumor has it that even the famed Little Sisters of the Poor is bringing in former East German female weightlifters to play the 4 position, using improper recruiting inducements such as free steroids.

CNN != Fox • Oct 18, 2018 07:13 PM

@wissox Us lawyers are more fun worrying about things that never could possibly happen in the real world.

Like this: Homeless guy buys a 6-pack of beer and a lottery ticket at the local convenience store, slurring his words and having trouble getting his money out of his pocket during the transaction. He stumbles on his way out the door, tripping over the fold-down doorstop, and bumping into a pregnant woman who pushes him aside on her way in. She is unharmed but, concerned Homeless might be hurt, she turns to watch his progress in the parking lot. As she watches, he knocks over a sign that has a banner sttached. The banner lands on the Pregnant Woman's unattended car, which catches fire from the hot exhaust pipe, demolishing it and igniting 53 gallons of gas stacked next to it by the Clerk that he is planning to steal after this, his last day of working there. Homeless, who was still disoriented after bumping into the pregnant woman, gets too close to the blaze and his pants catch on fire, which, fortunately, he is able to extinguish with his beer. As he crosses the street, Clerk sees he has dropped a piece of paper. Clerk calls to him. Homeless turns around and is vaporized by an 18-wheeler going by. The stress of the explosion causes Pregnant Woman to go into labor 2 weeks early. Meanwhile, the paper turns out to be Homeless's lottery ticket, which later proves to be worth millions of dollars.

So, the question is, who is liable for the damage to the grill and radiator on the 18-wheeler?

Or my 9 to 5 preference, either.

@jayballer73 Strange BP readings. Sounds like the pacemaker is a good idea. Do you think the car accident you posted about right before you posted 10 days ago caused a lot of stress that triggered some reaction?

@BShark Yard sale money, and online auctions of items, are not taxable unless you sell things for more than you paid for them. If you start an eBay business, usual rules apply.

@JayHawkFanToo It was a pretty good decade for KSU. First, Lon Kruger, overlapping Williams, overlapping Evans, overlapping Rolando Blackman. 5 Big 12 POYs among them from 1972-1981, 3 conf titles.

Hooray, VBers! • Oct 18, 2018 03:31 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Lost 27-25.

@Crimsonorblue22 He was not listed in the Box score for tonight's opener. Dunno if he was active because the ESPN list looks short.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 02:36 AM

@BShark She seems like someone who would have not been willing to work for the money if she could cash in on Billy. That gave her more time to rehearse her indignant-Mom act.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 02:16 AM

@HighEliteMajor And Ed's would still be allowed because any parent hired has to fill an assistant coach position.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 02:08 AM

Correction (edit): Danny announced his decision to go to KU in the fall of 1983 his senior year. According to the NYT, it was only 3 weeks after Ed was hired. So the timing wasn't good. (Ed actually replaced Jo Jo White on the staff.)

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 01:57 AM

@Woodrow There was a little difference for Ed Manning. Brown had previously coached Ed in the ABA where he played for 10 years. Furthermore, Brown hired him as an assistant coach for his initial KU staff, not a job any new coach would waste on hoping to get a player a year away. Finally, Brown took him to the NBA after Danny graduated and Ed kept working for San Antonio as a scout, I believe, after Brown left. So his hiring was more legit than some of the others usually listed, even if the UNC fans will never believe it.

@DanR Should be Molson.

@DanR His mother being Canadian, this sounds like a Loonie story to me.

@Woodrow Whoa, I never even looked because their original estimate was months, if not all year! Good news! Good find.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 12:35 AM

@DanR Did the $10 bill have a picture of a shoe in the center? Adidas cash fuels 19.6% of the Lawrence economy, according to the Brookings Institution. And she no doubt got a Dollar Bill in change.

@Woodrow Devonte signed a 2 year deal with Charlotte, but hurt his knee in the summer league after 3 games. Avg'd 10 pts 3 assists. Originally they said he would need surgery but later said that luckily he did not need it. Unsure when he will be added to the active roster--not soon, I suspect.

The Disappointment. • Oct 18, 2018 12:14 AM

@Bosthawk The Peter Pan thing always screwed me up. First, Mary Martin, then Sandy Dennis. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized that the character was a boy that for some reason was portrayed on stage by women in their 20's and 30's. Shades of Shakespeare.

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 09:59 PM

@Gorilla72 That might depend on what they learn from the jurors.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 09:58 PM

@Kcmatt7 And McDermott to Creighton, too! Pretty sure the coach had all types of extra contact, and gave extra food and stuff to that guy for years.

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 05:17 PM

@Woodrow I am so glad not to have to listen to that stuff. Many people think judges' instructions just confuse the hell out of everybody, at least those who can stay awake!

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 04:59 PM

Question: If everyone does it, and if everyone knows it, why hasn't the NCAA changed its rules to simply allow more compensation and level the playing field? The periodic scandals do not do the sport any good.

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 04:51 PM

@BShark Is there a trickle down to the rest of the team? I can't believe there wouldn't be resentment and jealousy by lower-echelon players, even walk ons. You would expect some of the kids who get recruited over to anonymously blow the whistle to get someone booted and get back their PT.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 04:47 PM

@nuleafjhawk It's okay, Virginia. Santa, Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny do exist, and their name is Big Shoe.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 04:41 PM

@HighEliteMajor Maybe the "I need to cheat to be competitive in recruiting" rationalization feels to those people more like looting bread to survive after a hurricane rather than looting jewelry or TVs to take advantage of chaos or no LE. I don't agree but I think that is what it is.

I do have a question for you that goes back to our discussion about which school's record would we want, KU or UConn. Would you be satisfied with a squeaky clean program that never wins a title if it is true that other blueblood programs are not clean? Or is turning a blind eye something us idealists have to be willing to do to compete in recruiting? I am torn here. I cannot say I am happy following KU football, but is that a price that might have to be paid were a coach to guarantee perfect compliance as the highest priority?

On my "gleeful" comment: I think it stands for itself. It wasn't directed at you. An analogy would be similar reactions from fans who "know" their team is going to blow a lead in the 4th quarter and instead of being disappointed like the rest seem smug when their negative expectations are realized.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 03:53 PM

@BeddieKU23 Thank you. There do seem to be a few who are almost gleeful in feeling their cynicism has been ratified. I think they were the 4th graders who kept telling kindergartners there is no Santa.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 03:51 PM

@Woodrow I said "if". Since everyone is saying all schools do it, this whole topic should be irrelevant except for if KU were to be caught.

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 03:48 PM

To anyone criticizing those of us who would be disappointed if Self or KU participated in illegal recruiting:

Basketball is entertainment. I have spoken before how excited I am to watch KU basketball, but also how I have fun watching players develop both on and off the court. Finding out bad things about KU or the players undermines my enjoyment.

Yes, it involves blinders, and fantasy, but I see no harm in that. Let me analogize: I know the action movies I watch involve CGI and fake blood, and that the good guy characters probably would do some bad things if we saw their lives over 24 hours, and that few movies ever show anyone taking a dump. Fantasy allows ignoring the gritty realities of life.

Basketball is fantasy. My choice, my disappointment when it implodes!

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 03:38 PM

@BShark @Woodrow

So, if there really were any NCAA violations here, they would be running afoul of the two most basic NCAA rules there are?

  1. Don't get caught.

  2. Don't embarrass the NCAA.

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 03:32 PM

@Woodrow Incidentally, every single story I have seen on this conversation is based entirely on Dan Wetzel's tweets. Since TV was prohibited from this trial, did Wetzel record the reading of the transcrpt on his phone? Try to transcribe it? I know how hard it is to accruately transcribe in real time--my hearings were tape-recorded and I often had to replay the tape to get it accurate.

Assuming Wetzel did not have a recording or access to the transcrpt itself, the quotes he tweeted might have been truncated to make KT sound worse. But that is only one possibility--the actual words could also have been much worse.

And the transcription could also have been inaccurate. Unlikely, but I had a military client who contended that his record of trial was inaccurate. I asked him how so, and he said that in the 45 pages covering his guilty plea, he had really said "no" every time the judge asked if he did something alleged in the indictment, and they just ignored him the whole time. He denied drawing the map showing his crime, he denied signing his confession, he denied agreeing to his plea bargain....

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 03:08 PM

@Woodrow Wouldn't he have said something more directly on point? And couldn't Adidas, willing to float hundreds of thousands of dollar, arrange for a car and job easily enough?

FBI...here we go • Oct 17, 2018 02:47 PM

@Woodrow That first quote of KT's does tend to look bad, but I am puzzled by something.

He is talking to Adidas, which has been providing cash to players. So why does KT say he himself has to work something out rather than simply suggesting that Adidas work something out?

The Disappointment. • Oct 17, 2018 02:38 PM

@KUSTEVE Wow, I thought I was up to date, but I had to look up "NPC meme".

To help others who may be as uninformed as I (surely, there must be one at least), I am providing a definition paraphrased for your usage:

"People who join the anti-KU crowd only because they’re brainwashed sheep who have been conditioned to parrot anti-KU orthodoxy, just as the computerized characters in a video game provide unthinking comments and actions."

You youngsters in your 50's!
