Jayhawks in NBA • Oct 25, 2018 02:44 AM

@dylans I mean a list of players on this years's rosters by school. The overally players list is another one requiring wading through some 450 to 500 names. The sources I had found are usually way out of date. Maybe I can compile one, but it seems there would be a site doing this.

@HighEliteMajor "Further, how many here have professed that CBB is dirty, that you have to be dirty to survive, that the entire thing is crooked, that everyone pays players, that how could we expect to recruit and make FFs if we didn’t cheat? That has been the constant drumbeat around here."

Well, I haven't mocked you for standing up for integrity. And I do not remember ever complaining about poorer recruiting classes. I do remember, however, that I was belittled by you, and others, for saying I would still be satisfied as a fan if KU had a lesser accomplished, but clean, program because of my pride in the team and staff. You belittled the notion of being satisfied with not winning championships, and discounted my contention that observing the growth and maturity of the players as players and as young men (Traylor as a perfect example, whom you would have replaced at KU with a better player) was equally as satisfying to me as winning championships. Do you remember those threads (lost in the purge, I believe)?

Jayhawks in NBA • Oct 25, 2018 02:17 AM

Is there a list somewhere of who actually made a roster? I know Cole & TRob got cut. Did Malik hang on? It is just too much trouble to look at all the teams' rosters!

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 25, 2018 12:57 AM

@Gorilla72 You can drive to the Grand Canyon. That makes up for all the rest.

Except you want to make sure your car is in really good condition because of all that desert and heat stuff.

@BShark Interesting. I wonder what the deal is with needing clearance by DOJ in order to start reviewing the material revealed in the trial?

Maybe certified copies of everything? Or maybe some material not admitted is waiting for the next trials?

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 08:34 PM

@BShark His not allowing the additional transcripts into evidence might be the vulnerable part of these convictions.

I don't really miss this stuff, contrary to any impressions I may have given by jumping all over any legal issue. I prefer reading legal mysteries to being in one!

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 08:28 PM

@BShark I have said before, I think it has nothing to do with anything the NCAA wants to do. I was never very afraid of anyone at KU getting hit with criminal charges.

@jayballer73 There is no reason for the NCAA to wait until sentencing UNLESS the prosecutor agrees to a lighter sentence in exchange for the defendants to agree to cooperate completely with the NCAA.

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 08:23 PM

@FarmerJayhawk @Kcmatt7 They can also deal for vacating one or more of the charges while not appealing the others, as well as testifying in future trials. The amount of a fine could be in play, too.

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 07:08 PM

@JAYHAWKFAN214 This prosecution obviously has protected America from horrible danger. Good thing these guys will not be out on the streets any. . . . oh, wait....

@Kcmatt7 Boy, will he take them for a ride!

Big 12 Tournament Staying In KC • Oct 24, 2018 05:24 PM

@dylans You really should try moving to civilization.

Silvio Done • Oct 24, 2018 05:10 PM

@Kcmatt7 They can ask anyone, and they can sanction players, coaches and schools that don't provide them. They have no formal subpoena power, but as with Cliff once they review someone's eligibility they can effectively suspend by doing nothing if a kid's family does not cooperate.

@JayHawkFanToo Being a stubborn old fart who believes words should actually be written out, I never use this but yours is so good I will:

LOL!

Silvio Done • Oct 24, 2018 03:16 PM

@BShark I think you have to be eligible to play in exhibitions. Our transfers played in the overseas tourneys, but not in exhibitions, I think.

@HighEliteMajor I think that what is upsetting people is precisely your claim that adidas has no duty to respect the NCAA rules that Self and KU are bound by. That may technically be true--the lack of any nexus to the NCAA (that we know of) is the crux for that conclusion.

However, I think that the assumption may be quite false. Adidas is a vendor and licensee of NCAA schools' apparel. They have contractual relationships with the NCAA and KU is at least a beneficiary of those relationships, and could possibly be a party, as well.

Those contracts, I think it is safe to surmise, require dealing in good faith with the other parties to those contracts. When adidas acts in a way to damage the value of either the NCAA or the KU brands, they could well be in breach of the contracts. Further, tortious interference with any entity's business is actionable in law. It may not give rise to criminal liability, but it certainly would to civil liability.

You also said you could see no fiduciary duty on the part of adidas. But civil suits and torts are not at all limited to fiduciary relationships.

The issue of shareholder reports and accounting/audit records was brought up by me. I was not saying they were falsified, only that if a line item of "payments to players" occurred anywhere in the financial documents reviewed by adidas' independent auditors, it likely would have raised questions and probably been revealed in the auditor's' report. As a publicly traded company on a European exchange (i.e., scutinized pretty closely compared to, say, Chinese exchanges), anything like this, with the amounts in question running cumulatively to probably millions over the years, would likely have been noticed. I cannot say it was not reported--but with the actors working so hard to keep it secret, and since we only found out through an FBI investigation arising out of other activity by a crooked financier, I believe the inference that adidas buried the expenses, and never revealed these underhanded activities to shareholders, is well warranted.

I also think their secrecy supports the notion that they knew it was wrong.

BShark said:

HEM is the kind of person that would kill hundreds of thousands of people to turn a profit, as long as it was allowed within the rules/law.

I think this is much more true of weapons sellers than it is of HEM.

Sorry. No Buckets cruise. • Oct 24, 2018 02:41 PM

@BShark Physically, I was right there!

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 02:40 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Oh, I think the potential for a several-years-long pain in the tookus from this whole thing is a real possibility. I was just addressing collateral legal liability--the feds won't want to undermine a conviction, but the NCAA is not bound by anything.

FBI...here we go • Oct 24, 2018 01:50 PM

@Woodrow @jayballer73 A guilty verdict might insulate our people from criminal prosecution by the feds. But the government theory of the case, regardless of whether the jury buys it, has no effect whatsoever on the NCAA bringing any case it wants to.

Sorry. No Buckets cruise. • Oct 24, 2018 01:46 PM

The winning ticket for last night's $1.6 billion jackpot was sold in SC, but due to a clear disruption in the harmony of the universe, it was not sold to me.

Too bad, too. We would have had a great time!

Kansas #1 in Preseason AP Poll • Oct 23, 2018 10:47 PM

@justanotherfan I think we don't know how good Silvio can be. Last year he stepped into the team cold as a second semester HS senior so those numbers are meaningless. With 9 months of KU coaching and Hudyfying, nonstop peer influence, and probably daily pickup games with and against KU's F4 calibre players, I think his improvement could be far beyond any amount anyone is predicting.

The Shoe Co • Oct 23, 2018 07:37 PM

@HighEliteMajor It may be simple, but it is strict--by which I mean, you have presented it as a black/white/no grey choice. A bright line test: honest, or not honest, but no room for "what other people do." And that actually is the standard I prefer to use, so I wasn't criticizing you on the standard, just your suggestion that corruption may not apply to the company's actions.

FBI...here we go • Oct 23, 2018 07:25 PM

@BeddieKU23 I don't actually know. A lot of judges chew lawyers up, but they just spit 'em out.

FBI...here we go • Oct 23, 2018 06:20 PM

@Kcmatt7 Deliberating until 8:30 pm gets them a nice dinner.

I like a smart jury!

@BShark Yeah, but it is more fun to agree with him if he is right so we can give a big monster Bronx cheer in the direction of UK.

The Shoe Co • Oct 23, 2018 04:26 PM

@HighEliteMajor I think it is traditionally accepted to think of anyone inducing another person to cheat by offering money as a corrupting (adj) influence who corrupts (v) the other person, and the resulting activity is "corruption" (n). The distinction you are making seems surprising in view of the strict standard of integrity you have been urging for Self and Staff.

But, interesting enough, adidas got its start under that name back after (I believe) WW2 when two German brothers split up their shoe company into Puma and adidas. A great scandal ensued in 1960 when Puma offered an Olympic track star some $50,000 to wear its shoes. The athlete tried to get adidas to match the offer. adidas allegedly refused to do so on the grounds that it was not proper.

If you are correct that the corporations are merely accomplishing their profits through these activities and are not doing anything wrong, I am sure their audited/reported financial statements would account for these expenses properly. If they are properly serving the shareholders, don't you think the shareholders would want to know?

@Woodrow Good point. I think linebacker would be a better position to fill to try to stop those 8 to 14 yard 1st down runs.

@BeddieKU23 I would have my fingers crossed about whether Wade could reinjure his foot. "Stress reactions" all too often seem to indicate a vulnerabilty to recurrence.

@BShark I think they are allowed to set up payment plans, but the money usually goes to a charity, I think. If repaid, it just goes back to someone who has helped corrupt the process in the first place.

Jamal Khashoggi • Oct 23, 2018 12:51 PM

@AsadZ I think we need to follow the great Christian leader Pat Robertson's lead on this one. Weapons sales are Biblically mandated for any great nation and far more important than principle. I mean, since journalists are the "enemies of the people" there should be nothing wrong with stamping out a few. Plus, those damn Yeminis have too many school buses and kids anyway, so selling the Saudis more missiles is a much greater priority than any moral imperatives of actually following one of those 10 Commandments our society desperately insists we need posted in schools.

Graham had his NBA debut for Charlotte. 6 minutes, 1 assist, 1 foul. Not much, but far better than spending all season in injury rehab.

@dylans I think KT in a recent interview made similar comments about Wiggins having great talent but apparently not focused on giving 100% all the time. I think in an article about Grimes having a similar tendency? Someone hopefully correct me if I am incorrect on which current player.

The Next Coach • Oct 21, 2018 02:48 PM

@jayballer73 This isn't really a change in topics from fb to booze. I am sure many KU fans have been hitting the hard stuff in droves for years.

The Next Coach • Oct 21, 2018 02:45 PM

@HighEliteMajor That would be nice! Unfortunately, it would be cheaper to buy a bottle of every brand that makes 25 year scotch every month! But, you do give me an idea--we need to plan our trips in mid-June rather than January, and watch the waves as I sail into a nice soft fog....

Question: What do YOU want KU to do? • Oct 21, 2018 01:36 PM

I wonder if it is more likely that coaches who tried to restrict transfers were running totally clean programs. Or, vice versa, if coaches with a complete willingness to allow transfers were more likely to have some shady stuff. It seems that a player who isn't being allowed to play much or transfer might be more willing to blow the whistle.

This incentive has changed somewhat with the gradual adoption of looser NCAA rules.

But I wonder if violations are indeed more widespread than we would hope. After all, why don't we see players "anonomously" ratting out compensated players on their biggest rivals?

@JayHawkFanToo I never liked Scotch until I tried single malt. Blends like Cutty Sark, J Walker Red, etc were all I'd had. Too bitter. Now we usually drink Glenlivet or something similar. Before the kids moved to Hawaii, I got a bottle every F Day. Now I just get a card, and then I have to get the booze myself to drown my sorrows...

Question: What do YOU want KU to do? • Oct 21, 2018 03:31 AM

@JayHawkFanToo When I agree with you on something, are we both obligated to scurry home and call NASA to make sure the Earth is still revolving properly so we can expect a normal sunrise?

@wissox I was thinking a cruise to the Bahamas for everyone who has approved of some of my jokes. We could make it interesting by having no nametags and seeing if we could all figure out who everbody is. HEM would be easy, of course, with those round glasses.

Playoffs • Oct 20, 2018 01:36 PM

@wissox Not happy but I am feeling a little ratified in my suspicions about the way the world works: money buys achievement, elections etc.

So my goal is to conduct my own experiment by winning Tuesday's $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot. I will take the >$900 million cash option and scientifically investigate whether money can indeed buy happiness.
