@HighEliteMajor I don't think it hurts to have an LL. Just not a great idea to let him be your top option for 2.5 years.
@HighEliteMajor Somewhere in this mess, I thought I read that KU held him out after the NCAA notified us that there might be a problem. The issue, I think, had arisen out of the info being examined by the FBI.
If so, hiding the real reason could have been to protect Preston's rep if the info turned out to be bogus. Anything coming out of the FBI to schools back then was likely to have been in the form of rumor, and would have needed to be tracked down and substantiated before any official action could be announced based on it.
@jayballer73 Tough to lose a game that way.

@HighEliteMajor Must be the same people in charge of this as the ones who have successfully kept the faked Apollo 11 mission under wraps for 51 years.
@BShark Wow, if everyone is happy then all the anger, and posted claims of illegal recruiting, in fan reactions to recruiting surprises are just pretend?
Hope it is accessible:

I am still amazed that for all the people who "know" Cal is dirty, or that Duke pays players, or the people who routinely call our coach "Dollar Bill," apparently none of those people has reported any of that knowledge to the NCAA. Our posters here won't report KU, of course, nor would other schools be reported by their fans.
But come on, there are probably thousands of claims from all around the country over the past 15 years about Self, and longer about K and Cal from people who hate them. And no one ever puts that knowledge to use? No disillusioned player booted out ever blows the whistle? No journalist ever manages to get the story of any of these scandals (the "all players are paid" scandals, not the outliers like the hooker parties at UL) even off the record? Maybe rumor begets rumor begets claims of "knowing" that is really merely suspicion and self-reinforcing cynicism.
@Statmachine Actually, there is no evidence he was offered anything by any school, is there? If KT's comment meant he was contemplating offering what the family wanted, it really would not have been hard to do it. Drop in the bucket for KU and adidas. That is why I don't see it as portrayed, "Gosh, we will have to do that." I see it as, "Geez, if that is what he wants we need to figure out how to recruit him without all that crap." If KT was dirty on this, why would he have sounded mystified?
@Crimsonorblue22 Yes, I am sure there was so much spin in his comments that the official keepers of Earth time will need to add a full second to the day.
@HighEliteMajor Did you watch Self's comments about Dok's free throws (he missed both)? He likened it to golf. Said Dok has been doing great in practice, made 19 0f 20 on Wednesday I think. Self says it is like the difference between hitting your shots on a range compared to having to hit it over water. The pressure makes a huge difference. But he says he expects Dok will hit 65% as he gets more comfortable.
@dylans Crap, I say the heading and thought you were informing us he would play! I say be patient.
@dylans You can save more time by just looking online at the end of the day for the scores!
Just kidding you. I realize most people have less time to spend than us retired folks. If our gkids were nearby, we'd have to compress watching time, too.
As it is, we enjoy spending a few hours each day. The breaks in long games give us lots of chances to read, talk, prep meals, etc. Or to keep replaying bad plays and yell at the screen sometimes!
Spts Illus has this pdf betting guide for all the NFL games with info on both teams, records against the spread, etc.

@BShark The Donald said during the campaign that "the 2nd Amendment people" could make sure that Hillary would never appoint any Sup Ct justices if she were elected. But how could anyone interpret that as encouraging violence?
@BShark We can all go running to our safe place together--the real world.
I took this out of the game thread because it belongs here.
Query: Sould we feel bad that KU won and played pretty well, with no turnovers and an actual successful 4 down goal line stand, since that makes it less likely Beatty would be fired?
Or, should we reconsider that maybe he is starting to get what he wants, and decide to give him an extended chance?
Keeping him as a lameduck coach would be costly in the long run. But if he has gotten players to buy in, would it not be counterproductive to get rid of him?
I am torn. Hopelessness Hangover.
@BShark @approxinfinity Somebody please, dear God, close this thread. It is just painful.
@DoubleDD Your little group of extremists includes Nazis NOW. If you want to go back to the Dems in the 1800's and the 30's enjoy the trip.
You posted originally: "Not one Rep/conservative blamed Bernie Sanders or the Dem party." So the NBC article, which isn't mainstream enough for you, refutes that. Just admit you forgot, or just keep embarrassing yourself. I am done with anyone who cannot see all those Trump stickers on the MAGAbomber's van.
@BShark Growing pains? The team's, I mean. Not yours!
@DoubleDD So, either your memory is as bad as your logic, or you are purposely lying, or you just simply let yourself believe whatever crap your fearless leaders feed you. Republicans jumped all over Democrats for the Scalise shooting. Here is a summary of some:
Since you probably won't read that because it comes from an MSM source, try Googling "Republicans blame Democrats for shooting" or put it into any search engine you want.
Amazing what people do to avoid thinking on their own.
Did anyone else stay up for the whole games last night? I thought it was worth every minute.. Anyone who is unhappy with all the interruptions and delays should do what I do--get a good, light mystery or something else you can read for a couple minutes at a time. (I can't imagine what it is like to sit in stadium seats that long, though!) The idea of changing rules to end games in fewer innings would destroy baseball forever. IMNSHO!
@JayHawkFanToo I test my speeds periodically because I noticed about 24 months ago that they slowed to a crawl every evening. They oddly stopped slowing down since a particular IT guy neighbor moved away 23 months ago!
@KUSTEVE There is no equivalency here. Let's see, one Republican was shot, and a few have gotten shouted at. On the other side, a democrat was shot in AZ, a right winger attacked a DC pizzaria accused by unhinged RWers of being a Clinton pedophilia center, a RWer killed a peaceful marcher in Charlottesville, anti-abortion RWers have bombed clinics and killed doctors and nurses, the President praises a campaign staffer for criminal assault on a journalist while the world stands horrified by a journalist's assassination, and he has also encouraged police brutality in arrests during a time of horrible upheaval due to police killings of unarmed suspects and even innocent people in their own houses. And that is just part of it. When you notice you are on the side of the guys carrying Nazi flags, it might be time to step back and examine what in the hell you are doing.
@Crimsonorblue22 He was really rubbing his cheek and jaw, too. Maybe following the trial really was like a root canal!
I am waiting for you Limbaugh woofers to try to justify the baseless accusations that the bombs were sent by a liberal. Must have been a really deep plant to be willing to have stickers with Dems in crosshairs.
@Woodrow I love it when I am told what I think! Thanks for that!
@JayHawkFanToo Signal is fine. I am on 5G with my phone. Only 10 feet from antenna. I am pretty sure it was my phone (Samsung S5) because I was able to stream other apps just fine. I should have just rebooted it because it gets quirky sometimes. But thanks for the suggestion!
@KUSTEVE No, I have Spectrum. I could use my Samsung Smart TV to watch games but I do it on my phone ytobavoid interspousal annoyance. Sometimes my phone is just fine, but it is possible the app wasn't activated properly until after it was closed down last night.
My brother had one and has now signed up for cable. I looked into it but almost egerything we watch, except Amazon Prime, is on network or main cable. Looked at Netfix but their shows haven't interested me.
@jayballer73 There is no doubt fans and players all provoke each other. I think the larger concern being expressed here is that Embiid has the chance to be the most popular player in the league since Magic. Fans have loved his antics and his pure joy in playing the game.
But he is wrong if he thinks his personality will immunize him from widespread backlash from pretending to be fouled, or provoking technicals to opponents, or by doing things that appear to many to be mocking anyone. And frankly, he is doing great but he appears when he does shit like this like he is not noticing that his team is not exactly dominating anyone.
I love the guy--so far. But he could be approaching a thin line here--and I don't want to see his career get reduced to being an extraordinarily talented clown who wasted his appeal. (Edit--@dylans beat me to it!)
@approxinfinity On the jobs issue, I do think the existence of a shadow work force like illegals contributes to lower wages overall. To say that only illegals will take those lower paying jobs is to admit that the employers are both exploiting their status and keeping wages lower. If the illegal labor market dried up, especially with the low unemp rates now, wages would have to increase. So, people who might get those jobs at higher rates may well end up staying unemployed. Right now, a PT job at McD's and another at Walmart might pay more overall than the types of FT jobs illegals take at lower wages.
I have read some economic studies that say the SS and Medicare systems are being kept afloat largely due to "contributions" by illegals that are withheld by employers but which will never be collected. I think that may be bogus since I would bet many employers just falsify pay records showing withholdings but keep the money.
@BShark This looks like the items used by the prosecutors and admitted into evidence in the trial. I think the Self and KT things were in defense exhibits and things the defense tried but failed to get in.
Well, hooray! I tried watching the ESPN+ replay today and it worked full screen. Last night, it only came through on the little window where you scroll thru the shows available. Clicking on it gave a several minute long rotating "loading" circle. (Too many tuned in?)
Today, clear and crisp. So, watching the beginning of the game and the analyses/interviews at the end was really helpful. So, I guess I keep it through the regular season games at least.
@kjayhawks I think they are getting help from people as they go through, aren't they? All those kids, such desperation. There is so much poverty in the world.
@JayHawkFanToo It does do that. But I want a list of active players, with teams, and their season stats, all nicely put together. I could probably create one, but the searching and constructing would cause a divorce since I am supposed to finish lots of projects before holiday visitors!
wissox said:
Crappy ATT internet at my house. We're about to switch to something else. Needless to say, I can't watch. I'll just watch your comments!
I was only able to get 1.5 mins on a picture 1/4 the size of my phone scrreen. Quit!
@drgnslayr You didn't direct it to me but I want to just ask--how do you have regular contact with, or chances to watch, kids who are playing for shoe-sponsored AAU coaches and teams and leagues, and how do you get info about the kids from those coaches, without having contact with the shoe companies' representatives?
Besides, Democrats could never organize anything like this and keep it a secret. There would be too much infighting and someone would spill the beans!
@JayHawkFanToo That is a good example of the inaccuracies I was referring to. Cole? Darrell? Mario? Thanks for trying though!
There would be little to gain for liberals to send them to people not running for office. Without any published claims saying they are from Trumpmaniacs, there is no reason for voters to suddenly decide they should lean to the Dems from this. Anyone trying to influence an election to the Dems is asking for lots of stretches by sending bombs without, say, putting a conservative groups' manifesto (even a fake group) inside.
@wissox I would like to see a replay of the feet. JoJo fell as if Drummond's foot was on his, but he defintely took advantage of it. Don't call it a flop. Let's just call it "enhancing gravity."
@BShark From what I read, there was also powder in one or more envelopes, and they said that that powder was harmless. Some media picked that up as meaning the whole thing was harmless, but the original statement referred to loose powder AND an explosive device. Cannot find definitive info but have not searched hard. The only way to know for sure will be if one blows up rather than being destroyed by a bomb squad. Not good.
@Kcmatt7 I think it is just a regular right winger. Crazy left a long time ago, its work no longer needed.
@JayHawkFanToo One of the best scenes in history. KAJ pulled it off, and so did the kid.
So, you earned another LOL! I am appointing you Official Comic Scene Finder to underscore all the important points I make. And, you will be happy to know, this important job does not require an FBI background check or taking testimony from anyone you knew in HS!
@stoptheflop They got him in 1970, I think. Traded Joe Foy to the Mets. 48 years ago!!! 48 way-too-freaking-fast years ago! My entire post jr high life!
Almost a half-century. Just think, 48 years before that was 1922, 4 years after WWI. So, practically halfway back to WWI. WAY TOO MANY YEARS AGO!
Sorry...feeling my mortality today. But maybe I will have another 48. I'd only be 110. But at least then when I rant and rattle on people will just attribute it to being an old geezer.
I remember way back when, before many Bucketeers were even a glint in their parents' eyes--heck, before some of their parents were even a glint in the g-parents' eyes--that the huge knock on Amos Otis was that he "wasn't giving 100%," or he got by on "superstar talent with journeyman effort," and stuff like that. He stole bases and made it look easy, so why didn't he try harder and steal more? He could cover 36,000 acres in centerfield, so why didn't he catch that one at the wall in right center? He trotted to first on groundouts to the pitcher, but shouldn't you run every time? Then Brett came in, who blew every one away with his crazy full-bore hustle, probably cementing Otis's legacy as not givlng it all. The performance by Cain in the WS years was hailed as an Otis with the "right" approach, with all those advanced metrics to document his superhuman feats.
Looking back at Otis, and now Wiggins, I think that people see those guys as blessed with ability that enables them to perform spectacularly all the time if they would just try harder, or focus more. But I think the reality is that no one in history can be spectacular all the time. Even Wilt, with the single greatest and longest variation of statistical excesses over average in basketball, was accused of not doing everything he could (couldn't beat Russell, so he must not have been a team player, etc). I think what we see is that these guys are so fluid in their movements that we think they are taking it easy when they really are giving it all. Sometimes, circumstances (a rebound at just the right angle, an opening in the line in football, a reachable line drive n the gap, etc) provide the uniquely talented some opportunities for the spectacular, but we err in thinking spectacular can ever be routine.
"He makes it look so easy" is one of the worst things that can be said about an athlete. These sports are not easy for anyone, and that is why very, very few athletes (even the greatest hustlers in history) have few seasons spectacularly exceeding the mean. If it were simply effort, we would not see the very ones we extol as examples of better effort regress in years we forget or don't pay as much attention to.
Now, I agree that "focus" obviously is different. Not paying attention to a coach's play-calling, making dumb fouls, not blocking out, passing to someone who isn't there.... All these are things we have seen every athlete do. I just think they are magnified when a guy who "makes it look easy" does them.
Sometimes a tiny bit of luck can play a big role in perception. If just a couple each game of Mahome's wild scrambles had resulted in fumbles, or his tipped passes in more interceptions, we would not be as happy. People would say he was trying too hard, and that he needed to focus better. When, not if, his performance regresses toward the mean this year or in the future, or when, not if, he isn't setting or tying records each game, I just hope people will attribute it to the usual trends of athletic performance and not think he has gotten complacent or stopped giving it his all.
@HighEliteMajor I am getting nervous. Complete agreement with you and @JayHawkFanToo in the same week.
Maybe there is hope for our world after all. Or, maybe it is a sign of Doom.....
@HighEliteMajor Here is a thread I created after the UConn stuff came out this past spring. Called "Back to HEM's question." Not sure if you were in on that one.
@HighEliteMajor (You edited and added a question while I was posting mine. This is the answer to your last para.) Yes, that has been my philosophy as expressed from my first post here on "Why I am proud to be a Jayhawk." And that whole discussion I just referenced in the above post included my emphasis on clean. It may have been in the context of the UConn vs KU thread where I said you cannot separate the sanctions and failures out of the UConn record when you are asking if we would trade, and I was unwilling to accept taking the dirty with the wins.
I also expressly stated that I was a huge Self fan, but only so long as I can respect him. After that, my respect for the players will keep me as a fan, but I won't be as proud of the school.
@HighEliteMajor My apologies. I did not mean to imply that you were advocating championships over clean. That is why I emphasized the word "satisfied" in both my statement and your dissatisfaction with that satisfaction I was expressing.
