Junkyard Dog Award • Jan 10, 2018 05:20 PM

There ain't any junk yard dogs on this team. How about the "Cute Little Puppy Who Licks Your Face" award?

DG still looks like he did as a freshman. When he tries to glower, I just want to pick him up and give him a hug like the little boy in my avatar. He is far tougher than he looks, for sure.

Compare the DG stare to the BIFM glare--yikes!

Who's playing in #14 uni? • Jan 10, 2018 02:47 PM

@KUSTEVE "The big question is will he survive the test on the road against the Hillbillies?"

Well, now, dagnabbit, Jethro! There you go agin, tryin' to stir up them beaker boys 'gainst our kin! Granny hears 'bout your doin's, 'sall over fer ya, boy! And, golly, w'ats with that there highfallutin' talking like ya waz all ed-U-cated like? Your hide best be tuffinin' for some major-like tannin', son!

@jaybate-1.0 "To be blunt, Marcus Garrett’s line score, normalized to 40 minutes smoked what Malik did."

Howz that?

@jaybate-1.0 How did you miss Hobby Lobby?

And, Building Lobby (millions of these).

@BShark That is weird. I wonder if it was Vick early, or Doke--neither were very effective. Mitch seemed to do the usual things, not real effective but I didn't see any selfish stuff. Everyone else had great spurts and some not-so-great spurts.

@BShark Who did he mean?

Who's playing in #14 uni? • Jan 10, 2018 04:17 AM

You could tell he wanted to drive about 10 more times but resisted. He has possibly finally started to learn that he is surrounded by several players much better than he was saddled with at Miss State.

@BShark Last game, I thought the coaches decided to stop the switches. At the end, Svi got in trouble about 3 times for not switching. Did we change strategy back? Maybe they forgot to tell him....

Hosmer to Padres? • Jan 10, 2018 04:13 AM

@Kcmatt7 It is possible, but the best benefit might be the reduction in balls hit by RH batters that he dives like a madman for at 3B. In the best George Brett tradition, but the injuries start coming more rapidly in the upper 20's.

He can still play like a madman at first, but having to hold runners and stay near the bag for throws might rein him in.

I still want both.

Glad we didn't need those FTs at the end!

I said it was imminent for Newman to break out.

So, we now have seen His Imminence, Malik Newman.

Hosmer to Padres? • Jan 09, 2018 11:21 PM

@Kcmatt7 Obviously, you can't think Moose is likely to be as adept at 1st as KH, who played nothing but 1st base from HS on, despite Moose changing mid-career to an untried position. But you also say it won't matter if he can't reach some batted balls or throws, because it won't cost the Royals that many games, just a few?

I doubt the Royals are as willing to give up any games as you might be. But if they are, we should probably agree they will do it by ridding themselves of both Moose and Hosmer and saving themselves millions. If a few games don't mean much, they will just go with a rookie or someone they trade for willing to play for the veterans' minimum.

Is Every Day the Day and Not the Day? • Jan 09, 2018 06:54 PM

Where is that damned cat?

Just an observation • Jan 09, 2018 06:52 PM

@wissox Hasn't the Fiesta bowl been used for playoffs?

Anyway, the SEC is where it is warm, except Cal, NM, and Az. Bowl games always were in warm climes only, before indoor stadiums. Alabama and the SEC were football powers long before ESPN. I don't see how the ESPN poll is very influential--number of appearances, more likely.

The only real complaint anyone can make about the process in my view is that they use polls at all and thus it is set up to reward reputation at the beginning of the season, so a team like UCF gets screwed because despite being undefeated they get left out by starting so far back. Historically, ND always got more visibility than anyone else, thanks to NBC.

Unfortunately, polls have always determined football championships. The only better way might be for coaches to all vote, once, at the end of November, and take the top 4. (Still rewards reputation, though, because we know from polls in general that coaches are lazy about them.)

Why not just Free Billy right now? • Jan 09, 2018 06:05 PM

"They all poison!"

(Apologies for linguistic appropriation.)

Why not just Free Billy right now? • Jan 09, 2018 04:14 PM

@chriz The risk of them deciding he is not eligible outweighs by far any benefit from him playing. It would not just be forfeiting games in which he played. Knowingly playing an ineligible player leads to charges against the school for failing to monitor the bb program and ensure compliance, and could subject the coaching staff to major sanctions. As it is, unless there is KU involvement in Billy's shenanigans, the school and program are free from sanctionxiety.

We could not argue we had no reason to suspect he was ineligible since we reported it ourselves, and you can be damned sure there is no way the NCAA would let us get away with it by ruling he has been eligible all along. (I can see it now: "The questioned player was permanently ineligible because he used the plumbing in a coach's house on a recruiting trip, which is an impermissible benefit.")

The next 9 games • Jan 09, 2018 02:55 PM

@HighEliteMajor He will get it going any game now, really soon. It is imminent, any minute.

@KUSTEVE HMMMMPPPHHHH, I just woke up, glanced around the court, saw that DAMN! by golly, wouldn't you know that troublemaker Jethro was back in the dock. Checking with Drysdale to make sure the Clampett monthly retainer was in good order, I banged that sucker gavel down, yelled, "Not Guilty!", took a hit from Granny's XXX jug, and fell back into my stupor.

Hosmer to Padres? • Jan 08, 2018 05:00 PM

@Kcmatt7 25% and "rare dbl plays" add up to hundreds of LH batters and numerous dbl plays over the course of a season. A LH 1st baseman can also field a bunt better and throw better to 2nd or 3rd in a sacrifice bunt attempt. And many a game has been decided by a ball thrown just beyond the 1st baseman' glove. Taller is generally better, but that isn't me: it is the universal position taken by scouts and college recruiters, and is why MLB 1st basemen are on avg the 2nd tallest players in baseball behind pitchers.

That does not mean there aren't exceptions, but I see little evidence that Moose has demonstrated these skills. I like him at third, and would keep both our corners!

Is today the day? (Preston & De Sousa) • Jan 08, 2018 01:55 PM

@KUSTEVE A bunch of paranoid whining ninnies!

Hmmm wondering • Jan 08, 2018 02:09 AM

@DCHawker I was responding to you criticizing KU for recruiting him. This is coming up because of rather extensive effort on his and staff's part to enroll early. I guess we could have simply waited, let the eligibilty decision been made before the fall season as usual, and kissed off him contributing when we need a big guy.

edit: Oh hey, @bShark beat me to it. :grinning:

Hmmm wondering • Jan 08, 2018 01:58 AM

@DCHawker Silly to say deSousa has character or academic "issues" other than coming from an Afican country. He was recruited for next year and graduated early, so there is nowhere near the usual time for getting an elig determination.

@wissox Well, I thought maybe it was due to extended winter break but it turns out their classes start tomorrow.

His name is Mitch. • Jan 07, 2018 09:24 PM

Sorry, Clay. That clamor you heard from certain quarters has been drowned out by the noise from the newly arriving Mitch Bandwagon.

Yep you Hawks are right. • Jan 07, 2018 09:09 PM

Mitch + slapping = Bitch, I'm Mitch

You write the fight songs, so time for the Mitch rap theme song to go with Frank's.

I wish Alex the best, Yet I'm ready for some Mahomes. The kid makes throws that Alex can only dream of. Sure at this point Alex is the better QB. Yet defense's aren't scared of Alex. They may not be scared of Mahomes either because of his age but you can bet you're arse they are weary of him.

I truly believe Alex affects Hunt in a negative way. Opposing defense's are't scared of Alex so they stack the box to take Hunt out of the game. Just having big arm Mahomes in the pocket makes defense's play more honest. See you around Alex hope the best for ya.

All that arm strength doesn't matter if the second half of every game where you take a big lead becomes an exercise in the coach calling play after play where the pass doesn't even reach the line of scrimmage.

Self’s best team at KU • Jan 07, 2018 05:14 PM

@kjayhawks How do you box out while swatting a shot?

Dwight • Jan 07, 2018 05:19 AM

Left this out: Their C-USA conf record is 3-0, tied with 2 other teams.

Dwight • Jan 07, 2018 05:15 AM

Hilltoppers are 11-5, in first place so far in their conference.

Coleby is averaging 11.7 pts (5th on team), 7.9 rebs (2nd) and 1.9 blks (1st).

Self’s best team at KU • Jan 07, 2018 05:10 AM

@kjayhawks I think Mitch was focusing on defending the shots rather than trying to box out. Can't box out and get a rebound very effectively if you prevented the shot.

Self’s best team at KU • Jan 07, 2018 05:07 AM

@Bwag We are all entitled to be optimistic or pessimistic--whatever it takes to get us into the games and through the season. We still cheer and hope for the team, and in the good-natured ribbing I think, and hope, we all realize that.

Self’s best team at KU • Jan 07, 2018 05:04 AM

@kjayhawks Dok had 1 rebound.

Wow, the one time someone tries to feed Mitch--Malik slips making the pass. Nice block earlier and taking the charge on other end, ML. Too bad he isn't important.

@BShark Oh. I assume the schools aren't exactly thrilled by that!

@BShark I believe the SEC got rid of pulled offers (grayshirt offers?). So the OleMiss offer probably could have been accepted at least. But I might not be talking about what you are implying.

Pathetic play calling second half -- second half of game looked like middle half of season. Dumb penalties, too. Over and out.

@drgnslayr It's who can be the loudest bigmouth. It's just part of our overall cultural decline. Now we see these idiots pounding their chests and screaming because they make a routine tackle. It's a joke. And it's proliferated with the disease that is social media.

"What are you doing, Dave?"

@benshawks08 Single malt is still worth it.

@HighEliteMajor It is a matter of minutes. Perhaps a coupla dozen, or a coupla thousand....

A colleague of my wife's at work gave her a "Countdown" spreadsheet that shows a running total of how many years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds she has left until retirement in March 2019. Cool to watch.

Maybe we could set up one that does the reverse--track how long it really takes until a ruling is made every time when Bill Self makes a prediction. Tracking days if he says it will be days, minutes when he says minutes, and so forth. You will like the name--A Complete BS Calendar, so to speak.
